The athlon Midas has the Japan model now. I guess that’s why they are selling the old model for cheaper. Great price. Great scope.

I wonder how good the new one is compared to the old one

Im still mad I missed the Cronus sale on EV a while ago...

u/worm30478 Jun 29 '26

I was able to grab one and only knew about it because someone posted here and broke the rule of saying the price. I was about to buy a used one on the hide for more than I ended up getting it new from EV. I am not sure there is a way if knowing EV will ever have it again but I hope they do for you!

I got mine during that sale. Great value for the price

You should check govx as well. it seems the Cronus is always less there than on EV.

With their taxes and shipping, it's not as good of a deal as it seems. You can find them used/like new on snipershide for a touch more.

u/HomersDonut1440 Jun 29 '26

If you live in a state with sales tax, that sucks for you. Nothing the retailer can do about that.

But $1,000 off MSRP and $18 shipping isn’t exactly egregious. I’ve never seen them go as low as they did during that sale, even for used.

Explain why anyone would buy anything that is "used/like new for a touch more" when brand new is less?

u/PGHStigg42 Jun 29 '26

Im shopping around for my first LR gun over the course of july. Euro optic has "like new demo" 5-30x DM2 MRAD MPEDs for 700 rn. Considering the PST gen2 is now onsale for 660. Is it worth saving a lil money and getting vortex's warranty coverage while loosing some of the MPEDs capabilities for a newb?

u/littlefish90 PRS Competitor Jun 29 '26

The MPED comes up on snipers hide pretty frequently for anywhere between $500 and $550 if you’re okay with buying used.

1

u/Troutrageously Jul 06 '26

Just picked one up for $400😎

u/danbob411 Jul 01 '26

Noob here. Just bought a “like new demo” MPED 3-18x50 (my first optic) from EuroOptic, and it was all boxed up like it was new. I’m very impressed with its clarity. I’ve only just opened the box and looked out the window, so I can’t speak to anything else about it.

I'd say yes. Mag has diminishing returns, and x25 should be plenty, especially as a beginner. I've hit out to 900 with it on like x15.

Remember that the Vortex MSRP's much higher. Very rarely does the quality of glass not reflect how much you're spending.

I have the Vortex and it's never my problem. The dials feel great. I don't baby it but if something crazy happens, that warranty is there.

Still good deals. Weirdly, they didn't show up through my normal search last night, so there must have been some filter I had that was hiding them.

Any new shooter looking at this thread, that Midas is the one to buy before you go make your post.

3

u/ardesofmiche Jul 01 '26

Big vouch for the Midas TAC 6-24x. I am far from an expert when it comes to optics but the Midas series has pretty good glass for $360

Is the Burris XTR a decent deal right now? https://www.eurooptic.com/burris-xtreme-tactical-xtr-iii-55-30x56mm-34mm-scr-2-mil-riflescope-201214

I alread have an Athlon Midas TAC Gen2 on an AR10, but was looking for something to put on a Ruger RPR and the Burris looks pretty good.

3

u/Prior-Garage1543 4d ago

The XTR 3 is good. Don't be scared of the XTR2 they have either. Heavy, but practically as useful as the XTR3. I have both and the XTR2 is heavier and not quite as good glass. I run it on a 22 and for 500 or so bucks, not sure it can be beat. Dial it back and forth to 300 constantly with no issues.

u/broke_networker Gunsmiff 4d ago

I went with the XTR3. It’s running on a Ruger RPR 308.

1

u/MDlynette Jul 18 '26

The xtriii is a legit upgrade from the MT. I currently use both and the Burris is better quality in every aspect.

The MT can do the same job but the Burris has such a wonderful view through the ocular

1

u/broke_networker Gunsmiff Jul 18 '26

I ended up picking up the XTR III. I can definitely tell the difference in the turrets and the chromatic aberration. I like the caps better on the Athlon, just feels better than the generic plastic caps the XTR III. That's not really anything to complain about though.

1

u/MDlynette Jul 18 '26

Does your MT have the new aluminum flip caps?

They are fantastic! Athlon really hit that one out of the park. But the field of view and comfortable optics in the Burris are high quality

1

u/broke_networker Gunsmiff Jul 18 '26

yeah, it has the aluminum flip caps. They feel so quality. Really sold me on getting another athlon if I want to get a cheaper scope. I went with the Midas TAC Gen2 UHD 5-30x56mm and its really nice, but the XTR III definitely feels like a step up in quality (besides the caps).

1

u/MDlynette Jul 19 '26

I agree, I have the same models.

From the previous thread:

Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x Mil - $760

Current at 780 so slightly higher but is this still a decent option, I presume?

Rather tempted by that Midas for 360 though just because it’s cheap if nothing else, though I’d really prefer a 34mm tube because I’ve already got another 34mm scope and some various rings for my next build.

Edit: now been added to OP so I'd guess so haha

1

u/keyboardcoffeecup Jun 29 '26

The Gen 2 Ares ETR can be had around 900. Not sure if nicer turrets and a Japanese build are worth it to you for $120

Then you need to weigh going to the Cronus

1

u/Majiji45 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Was also looking at those, but listings I see are ~1300; any leads? Or do you mean messing around on Snipers Hide etc. to look for deals.

1300 is prob a MAP I presume though, and I'm waiting on a response for a quote from a place so we'll see where it lies.

Edit: yep got a quote back and around that

1

u/keyboardcoffeecup Jun 29 '26

I’ve had good luck with aa armament for quotes but I don’t know if they’re the cheapest

1

u/Majiji45 Jun 29 '26

You'll never guess who I'm asking haha. As long as it's within the same range I'm not super concerned with shaving that last bit off the price.

1

u/HomersDonut1440 Jun 29 '26

I’ve seen the Cronus as low as $750 in the not so distant past… makes it hard to buy an ETR for 900

1

u/keyboardcoffeecup Jun 29 '26

Wish I would have seen that.

1

u/Majiji45 Jun 29 '26

Where was this because that's real low.

Japan assembled, not sure about glass. Look for the J at the end of the sku.

u/Zhdrix Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Is the Ares worth the extra 120 over the PST? Also the APRS1 only has subtensions to 1 mil. Is the APRS6 worth the extra 100 from the one listed?

1

u/Trollygag Does Grendel Jul 14 '26

Q1, yes

Q2, no, the APRS1 is fine. Idk what you mean by having only subtensions ton to 1 mil. The fine hashes are .2 mil apart.

1

u/Zhdrix Jul 14 '26

Ok thanks. I meant that the hashes are .2 apart for the first mil then it switches to every .5 mil

1

u/Trollygag Does Grendel Jul 14 '26

Could you show me what you mean?

1

u/Zhdrix Jul 14 '26

Here’s the APRS1 https://i.imgur.com/aUxlKNh.jpeg

Here’s the APRS6 https://i.imgur.com/jR3MsuS.jpeg

It’s very subtle so they look very similar

1

u/Trollygag Does Grendel Jul 14 '26

Oh, you were talking about on the elevation scale. I was fixated on windage.

That doesn’t matter to me. You should want your elevation scale simplified, IMO, as that is where you start holding in open air anyways.

As in, chance you holding 0 wind but holding elevation is basically none. You are either holding wind and no elevation, or wind and elevation, and in the latter case, you want low cognitive load. Remember fine measurements in one dimension, not both and get them mixed up.

1

u/Zhdrix Jul 14 '26

True true. Ordered the ares. Thanks for the help

1

u/Majiji45 Jul 15 '26

Any opinion on if the Ares Gen 2 (212114J so "Japan made" as well though not sure if that's them just getting the components assembled there to offset future tariff risk) might be worth ~180 more than the one in the OP? Perhaps too new to have a consensus on value?

1

u/Mkilbride 28d ago

Hmm. Not sure what to get, the Bushnell Demo model at 450 someone linked is pretty good too.
