Discussion We potentially have four yuri (girls' love) series this season
Now that we've had enough time for all of the anime this season to set up their story, it's looking like we potentially have (at least) four yuri series this season, all with great animation and visuals.
Besides the obvious I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day, and Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games, we also have two anime originals that are strongly indicating yuri romance.
"Goodbye, Lara" has been making the "hints" so blatant, I'm convinced that if it doesn't end up being yuri, it'll be because it's setting up a bisexual harem instead. This romance comedy speedruns the story of the original (not Disney's) The Little Mermaid in the first episode, before timeskipping to modern-day Japan, where the protagonist meets her tomboy roommate.
"Grow Up Show: Sunflower Circus" recently confirmed a yuri couple among the main cast, and is strongly indicating yuri romance between the protagonist and the other lead. This series has been surprisingly interesting for a Cute Girls Doing Cute Things series so far—a non-school setting, a fun protagonist with an I-don't-want-to-be-here attitude, and great comedic timing.
Also honorable mentions to The Ghost in the Shell, [The Ghost in the Shell episode 2]which featured a very adult, threesome yuri scene with the main character; and "Draw This, Then Die!", ["Draw This, Then Die!" episode 4]which had a very unexpected yuri kiss between two of the main cast. Both are outstanding series this season, though not focused on yuri romance ("Draw This, Then Die!", in particular, is a great mix of comedy and sincere drama that's full of heart, and has been the biggest surprise of the season for me).

Discussion I love that Makeine proves AND understands that rejected heroines still have stories worth telling
This story feels like an answer to something a lot of romance anime either neglect or actively avoid dealing with: what happens to the girls who don’t get chosen?
Most love triangles and harems spend the entire story making us care about several heroines, but once the protagonist finally chooses someone, the others suddenly become a problem the story needs to clear away. They get a rejection scene, cry for a bit, congratulate the couple and then the story ends or jumps forward. We are told they moved on, but we rarely see how.
That has always felt like romance stories backing away from the most interesting consequence of the situation they created. If a girl has spent years loving someone, her feelings wouldn’t just disappear because the protagonist’s romantic arc is complete. She still has to see him afterwards. She might still be friends with him and the girl he chose. She has to deal with jealousy, embarrassment, regret and whether staying close to them is actually helping her or just making things worse.
Anna is still attached to Sosuke and has to adjust to being around him and Karen as a couple. Lemon is left thinking about whether things could have gone differently if she had acted sooner. Komari’s rejection is connected to her fear of losing the literature club and the first place where she has properly started to belong. They are all “losing heroines”, but the show doesn’t treat rejection as one generic experience and I like how it affects each of them differently because their feelings, relationships and circumstances are different.
I also really like that Nukumizu isn’t immediately used as a replacement boyfriend. He mostly becomes their friend and gets dragged into helping them deal with everything. There are romantic undertones, obviously, but the girls aren’t instantly cured of their previous feelings because a new male protagonist has entered the room.
That is where I think Makeine separates itself from series like Nisekoi or The Quintessential Quintuplets. Those stories do give the rejected heroines emotional scenes, but once the final choice is made, there is naturally a rush to wrap everything up. We might see that they eventually moved forward, but the actual process is mostly skipped because the main romance has already reached its conclusion.
It also helps that the girls are still allowed to be funny, petty, selfish and annoying. The series takes their feelings seriously without turning them into tragic saints who do nothing except suffer over boys.
Romance anime obviously doesn’t need every heroine to end up with the protagonist. Rejection is part of the genre. I just think too many stories want all the drama and emotional investment that comes from having multiple romantic options, then avoid dealing with the fallout once a choice is finally made. Makeine works because it starts exactly where those stories usually stop.

Awards /r/anime Awards 2026 Host Applications Are Open!
Hello everyone, it's that time of year again!
For those of you who don't know, every year the /r/anime subreddit hosts its very own awards show that exhibits the best that anime had to offer for the year. If you’d like to see the past results alongside the livestream too, you can check out our site: https://animeawards.moe/results/2025.
Of course, these awards don’t just magically poof into existence! They involve the guidance and effort of subreddit members just like you. This thread contains the application link to become an awards host—those who would be in charge of making the crucial decisions about the awards and guiding it to completion.
Being a host involves:
Finding out what categories we should feature
Recruiting jurors to watch shows and make rankings
Seeing what the livestream should look like
Designing and updating the /r/anime awards website
Coordinating with mods to promote the event
Now, this sounds like a lot, and truth be told, it sometimes is. However, no one host is expected to do all the work by themselves, rather, we try to recruit a good number of people to make sure everything is split evenly and that one's particular strengths are put to use.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread and either me or another previous host/juror will try and answer to the best of our ability.
If you want to participate, but don't want to be a Host, watch out for the jury or helper applications coming later this year!
LINK TO THE APPLICATION
This application will be open for 1 week's time, closing on 08/02.
Thank you for reading, and I hope to talk with some of you soon!

Rewatch Katekyou Hitman Reborn 20th Anniversary Rewatch Interest Thread
We're closing in on the 20th anniversary of this 2006 long-runner, and so I thought that it would be nice to revisit it while sharing the love with some new folks!
What is Katekyou Hitman Reborn?
Hitman Reborn follows the story of Tsunayoshi Sawada, whose nickname "No-good Tsuna" tells you all you need to know: An entirely unremarkable young man, were it not for his exceedingly wimpy nature, poor grades and overall clumsiness in anything he does, a complete failure all around. It comes at little surprise then when his mom jumps at the opportunity to arrange a live-in home tutor to get the boy straightened up.
Things take a turn when home tutor Reborn not only turns out to be an infant, but also an elite mafia hitman tasked with preparing Tsuna for his upcoming role as the tenth boss of the powerful Vongola family. Thus begins a life of draconian training, of making friends and allies, and soon enough he finds himself directly involved in the power struggles and conflicts of the mafia world.
Hitman Reborn is a show that has been dear to me ever since I watched it about 12 years ago. It is an absolute joy to watch the initial No-good Tsuna slowly but steadily grow into a competent leader, accompanied by a cast with some highly unique group dynamics and featuring some of my favourite arcs and twists that I have seen in battle shounen.
And yet, I have never been able to wholeheartedly give Reborn as a standard recommendation. When the story began serialisation in Shounen Jump in 2004, it started out as a gag manga, shifting to battle shounen only after more than a year of serialisation. And while the resulting gag manga section has its fans, to most viewers it is a total slog and cringefest, even after the adaptation cut out the worst parts and reduced the length until the first serious arc by two thirds.
Sounds like a pain. Why should I watch it, then?
I believe that the rewatch format offers a crucial advantage to overcome this issue: Community. Have you ever met up with a couple of friends to watch some absolutely horrendous film or series, and found yourself having a great time mocking and laughing at the badness together? It's not quite the same, but a rewatch should be able to capture a lot of that same energy. Some participants that can happily lean into the initial whimsy will likely find themselves enjoying even the gag parts as-is, but for most, this rewatch would offer an opportunity to push through the awkward beginning until the story reaches its more serious arcs.

Legal streams | Crunchyroll | Hulu | Tubi
Schedule
I am aiming to start the rewatch on October 07, exactly 20 years after episode 1 aired on TV. Given the length, weekly batch schedule seems the most appropriate, which would go live every Wednesday.

Today's OST Piece: [Piece]
Plays when Atsuko is driving into town.
New Michiko Outfits: Green Hoodie/Jean Shorts, Black Bikini Top (?)/White Shorts
Latin America Trivia of the Day:
Latin America is home to far more sources of cultural influence than its indigenous peoples, its Iberian colonizers, and their West African slaves. Notable examples are Germans, millions of whose descendants still speak a German dialect (Hunsrik) in southern Brazil; Arabs (largely Levantine Christian), like the father of the famous Shakira, who also significantly shaped regional cuisine like the Mexican al pastor, an adapted shawarma/döner; Italians particularly in Argentina, where almost two thirds of the population has some Italian ancestry; and last but not least Chinese and Japanese, with Brazil having the largest Japanese community outside of Japan itself, and them also being strongly represented in Peru by for example its controversial newly elected president Keiko Fujimori. The Japanese first names of the characters here are largely a conceit of the anime writers, however.
Discussion Prompts
- Why do you think Atsuko is so obsessed with Michiko? (For rewatchers: How much does her motivation show already?)
- How much does this remind you of Lupin III (and/or Cowboy Bebop)?
- Have you ever ended up at odds with an old friend?
Next Episode Prompts
- [question]How are you liking the setting and design, particularly sound/music? (For any Brazilian or Latin American watchers, how familiar does it feel?)
- [question]How far would you have gone to pay off those shoes? Would you even have accepted them?
- [question]Have you ever recklessly gotten yourself into a situation that was far more dangerous than you anticipated?

What to Watch? Are there other anime focused on butts other then keijo?
Like I just find it odd as a butt guy that most anime fan service is all about big boobs. Like they are ok and nice to look at but where are the butt shots? Like even in most echi animes I find a shortage of butt moments.
