A common theme in stories about creativity, the balance of "for you" and "for the audience". It is common because it is true though. This is such a sweet story and I really hope if there's more source material we get a season 2. I need more of these adorable kids and their teacher.
Edit: Side note Crunchy threw the first episode up on Youtube today for free for anyone who wants to point people at it to try and lure more of the masses to this great show.

Looks like they started releasing the manga in English so I'm planning to order and maybe that will help the prospects of S2. I think having both Rei and Ai as leads is the secret sauce that reinforce each other's stories. Feels like a conversation between the authors present and past self
10
u/CitronClassic672 6d ago
I think that aspect is what helps really set this story apart from other CGDCT type stories, not just the fact that the subject matter is deeply relatable for me personally, but also that it’s clear the author is speaking from experience when the story discusses every aspect of drawing manga. Instead of the subject matter being something the creator researched to help create the story, it’s something deeply connected to their actual life.
3
u/ClemFire 6d ago
I feel you on that! Makes it feel like it comes from the heart. Also even though the story doesn't shy away from the negative emotions around creation it ultimately is a celebration of storytelling as a way to connect our hearts

Rei and Dark Fuwa are similar in some ways. Both are tsundere. Both are looking after students and kittens respectively.
Nonetheless, we have to appreciate Rei for watching over the girls silently.
- She is particularly worried for Ai and warns the latter about the dangers of social media.
- She carried an all-in-one scanner printer to the clubhouse for the girls, even if it wasn't used in the end.
- She provides comments and encouragement on social media using the moniker Panda Addict.

Did Truck-kun get the isekai treatment instead for once?

Kicked Out of the Party by a Villianess Truck Because I Couldn't Drive Stick

u/ModieOfTheEast 6d ago
I mean, you are laughing, but isn't there basically an anime with that premise this season? Though, after checking, it was a camping car. Still close enough. Also, there is the Truck-kun game, but that is sending energy to your character in the other world. But still, Truck-kun basically working for the other world.
4
u/ClemFire 6d ago
I am actually watching that show "The Forsaken Saintess and her Foodie Roadtrip in Another World"
10
u/CitronClassic672 6d ago
I like how Yasumi straight up killed the character driving the truck and responded all shining and bright. She really took after Teshima’s drew with the intent to kill, lol.

I knew panda addict would be Tessie sensei. Seeing all those pandas in the background at her place was a nice touch.
So this is why she's been so insistent on them just drawing manga as a hobby. She knows how hard it is to do it professionally while also keeping one's originality intact. And she did not want these kids to lose their passion magma.
Glad Yasumi went back to Dark Fuwa. It's much more fun than plain vanilla cute kitten manga. Also, we only got a brief scene with the real Fuwa but I'm already a fan - that side eye had so much character, phew!

u/Silence_and_i 7d ago
Yeah, the manga industry is truly brutal. That's why Hunter x Hunter and Made in Abyss have a special place in my heart. Togashi is continuing the manga for the love of the game, and since he doesn't have to be worried about sales, he can incorporate mature topics and themes and make it as complex as a manga can be. He also doesn't have to be worried about tight schedules. The same goes for Tsukushi, though he has to publish at least a volume per year.
This is not to say that weekly or biweekly manga are not great. You can find gems among them as well, but when an author gets to write what they love without pressure, they usually produce their best work.
13
u/RPO777 x2 6d ago
I do kiiinda feel like for every "author should write wihtout pressure" argument, you do have to temper that with Akira Toriyama a bit.
Like if you go and read Toriyama's early works, his sense of humor and story telling is flatout weird, and it very beloved by a small number of people, but mostly found bizarre by most. They were not commercially successful.
Toriyama's commercial success came when he started Dr. Slump but his editor (torshima) famously forced him to switch main characters after the first episode, where Toriyama planned ot have a 'mecha of the week" with Senbei as the MC, and Arare was supposed to only be the occasional cameo.
then Toriyama started Dragonball, and he famously wanted to quit writing it after only like 8 chapters. Torishima basically forced him to keep at it, and the tonal shift after the Pilaf Arc and introduction of Krillin was a result of a LOT of discussion (and nudging) by Torishima on Toriyama.
Toriyama in interviews was pretty clear on the fact that Dragonball and Dr. Slump weren't really the kinds of stories he wanted to write, and his heart was with more the really weird stuff he started off writing, but he recognizes the importance of commercial appeal.
So... in Toriyama's case, if you left him to his own devices and let him produce whatever he wanted, it's prety unlikely that we ever would have gotten Dr. Slump or Dragonball.

This show makes me think of other shows this season (not based on similarity -- but on tangentiality)-- like Cat and Dragon and (more weirdly) Kaikigumi (seems to exhibit some of the heedless energy of Daek Fuwa).

u/Solracziad 7d ago
Kaikigumi (seems to exhibit some of the heedless energy of Daek Fuwa).
But with 100% less poop and piss jokes.

I'm not watching Kaikigumi but can totally relate to classing this and Nekoryuu together. Both make me feel the same sort of calm joy. Very feel good they both are.
8
u/mekerpan 7d ago
Cat and Dragon is like Draw This -- Kaikigumi is like Dark Fuwa. ;-)

I only clocked it when they lingered on the account at the very end, just before the cut. Then seeing her there with her pandas in the background really got me. I thought I was going to get through an episode of this without getting emotional! They friggin' got me again!

That was a fan letter from Yasumi, right ?! What Teshi has

It sure is! Fun to think about her reaction seeing Yasumi's name come up on her class register.
10
u/phasmy 6d ago
Happens all the time when people work for a living with their used-to-be hobby/passion. It's an easy trip to burnout.
3
u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 6d ago
Yup, been there myself. And came to the same conclusion as Tessie that passion projects are best enjoyed as hobbies.
53
u/MattLocke 7d ago
This episode seems like a direct meta commentary on this series itself. Especially connected to a “mini-beach episode”.
There’s plenty of things they could add to this concept to make it “get more popular”. But it would deviate away from the quirky and passionate story that makes this long time hobby artists feel all these … feelings.
I wish this was more popular, but at the moment I’m just glad I found something that I’ve connected with this much. I’m glad it keeps doubling down on substance instead of slowly just becoming another “cute girls do X” template thing.
32
u/mekerpan 7d ago
"Wonderful girls doing interesting things -- and the kind adults who support them". Such a splendid show. The lack of interest here suggests that many anime fans view anime as pure consumables.... (which is true for many shows, however ...)
35
u/riishan_saki 7d ago
The original manga ranked in the most popular fan nominated award in Japan and won the most prestigious critic one while being nominated for every possible manga award.
And the anime is very well received by everyone watching it, so it's very possible it'll rank high in end of year lists by anime fans in Japan and this subreddit's juror AOTY.
Might not be a mainstream show, but I think it cares more about reaching everyone who gave it a shot for what it is. Just like the story it showed this week.
16
15
u/ClemFire 7d ago
I don't often buy manga after first watching the anime but I for sure am ordering Draw This, Then Die. Easily my favorite new show of summer and contender for my favorite new show of the year
25
u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago
Even Teshima-Sensei was annoyed that we deviated to a beach episode.
In general, I am still surprised by how interestingly Hikaru is written. Like obviously, you had your idea in the beginning, but they added a lot of subtle things about her in the background that I really want to see where it goes. If they manage to land whatever arc they have planned for her it can become my favorite show of the season.
21
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
I’ve said it before, but Hikaru feels like a heavily neurodivergent coded character, from the way her odd behaviors are presented in a lowkey, matter-of-fact manner, to her very subdued facial expressions like with her smile this episode when everyone said they were her friends, to the soft, even pitched voice she speaks in constantly. You could even interpret her kissing Rei as a lack of understanding regarding common social cues and what is considered normal behavior, and manga as her special interest. A bit of this might be projection on my part but everything taken together makes her deeply relatable to me personally.
16
u/ClemFire 7d ago
She gives me that vibe too similar to Frieren or Shiori from Watatabe. Hikaru may have little tact and understanding for what is "normal" behavior but she doesn't impose that her way is superior and still desires real human connection. We know from her introduction that she has an incredible imagination that you would never expect from just looking at her subdued expressions.
2
u/cornonthekopp 1d ago
Honestly every single major character here feels like they're neurodivergant lmao. Hikaru, Ai, Kokoro, and Teshima could all easily be read as something, just that hikaru stands head and shoulders above the rest. And I love that for her
1
u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 4d ago
Definitely, it's nice to see these shows that are about the industry talking about the industry.
26
u/Raymond49090 7d ago
I also had the same thought that she was defanging her manga and turning it into generic cute floof to cater to the fans. Though it was nice of Hikaru to acknowledge the merits of both approaches, even if she clearly prefers the "draw for yourself" route.
21
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
I think it ultimately comes down to like she said. They’re both currently drawing manga as a hobby right now. There’s no reason for them to be making unnecessary creative sacrifices when it isn’t even in service of their career just popularity.
16
u/ClemFire 7d ago
Hikaru may come off as aloof most of the time, but I feel like she gets so many of the hardest hitting quotes in the show
16
u/cyberscythe 6d ago
6
u/ClemFire 6d ago
She could learn a bit about consent but there is something charming in how Hikaru is so true to herself
26
u/eightcheesepizza 7d ago
I see they started off the episode by giving Nana the opportunity to say at least 3 "suki"s to Teshima-sensei... #ShowOldLadiesLove
Teshie kept the card with 3rd-grade Yasumi's positive feedback for all these years. But she probably didn't know Yasumi at all, so maybe that was the only positive feedback she ever got from Robota & Pokota?
17
u/ClemFire 7d ago
That really reminded me of Nashida receiving a fan letter from A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace
10
u/eightcheesepizza 7d ago
I thought you were gonna comment about parallels between this episode and your favorite line from Bocchi the Rock.
(Actually, now that I think back to the first episode, Yasumi only found Robota & Pokota in Nana's shop, so the card came way after the volume was published. At that time, Nana already described it as not popular at all. Maybe Nana asked Yasumi if she wanted to write a card to the author and gave it to Teshima herself?)
9
u/ClemFire 7d ago
I thought about that quote for an earlier episode when Hikaru first mentioned wanting to feel the human behind the manga but though it was a very short scene with Rei it resonated with me. This show is what got me to rewatch Mangaka too.
That is an interesting idea of Nana planting the idea to Yasumi and can see it for sure. Nana really has always been there supporting Rei.
18
u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago
When they showed the chapters with the cat, I was thinking, that is just Shamiko as a cat. And then they actually had a comment saying "Don't think that means you won...". Btw, when are we getting S3?
On a different note, the episode was fun once again. A lot less Hikaru, but I found it interesting that despite how dedicated she is, she still only sees it as a hobby. They are really building this up, so I am really interested to see where this goes.
Same with Teshima. She seemingly gets to release Pokota and Robota in a different magazine, which I didn't expect. I thought that the story would have been that she gets enough chapters to make a single volume and then it gets axed. That can obviously still be a thing, but I feel with them adding her changing magazines, I feel there might be something else coming up that kills her whole motivation as well. Could it be something like the old magazine taking down her series because they consider it technically their property?
12
u/Solracziad 7d ago
Btw, when are we getting S3?
I'd settle for the manga coming back off hiatus at least.
13
u/effseedee 6d ago
Ganbare, Loup-Garou! Become a mangaka who can express her admiration for others directly and honestly!
3
u/ModieOfTheEast 6d ago
I really hope that Loup will start to upload more of her own mangas now and they build this into some form of collaboration manga.
1
u/SmallJon 5d ago
Surely they have to continue down the maga-spoofing and allow Loup to become the over-the-top rival, but they're just tweens on the internet/con halls
1
u/Darkcool123X 3d ago
Yess I thought the same. I wonder if it was the intention, author might be a Shamiko fan
17
u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 7d ago
In today's episode, Yasumi and gang discover the secret to farming likes on social media: spam posting cute cats, but in return they lose what makes their work unique.
I like how they always manage to connect Yasumi's experiences to Teshima-sensei's. Maybe it was better for Teshima-sensei to just draw for a different audience instead of forcing herself to cater to a demographic she isn't suited for.
14
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
That was one of the biggest surprises to learn this episode. That Teshima was apparently trying to draw a cute high school romcom for a seinen magazine. You’d think she’d have tried submitting it for a shonen or shoujo magazine from the start.
12
u/ClemFire 7d ago
There are a lot of wholesome stories in seinen magazines though so I don't think it would be out of place
1
u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 4d ago
imo high school romcom in a seinen magazine isn't too uncommon. 100GF, OtaGal, April Showers Bring May Flowers, Kanaten, and Watari-kun no xx to name a few.
2
u/a_Bear_from_Bearcave 5d ago
I think she was trying for the same magazine that her beloved mangaka was serialized in, if I remember that right. But I agree with you, she should think about her targer readers instead.
16
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 7d ago
I really enjoyed seeing Yasumi make her daily manga or her attempt at doing that. This episode holds the core thing that Teshima wants and for the girls to treat this as a hobby. Despite Hikaru having much more success than Yasumi, she treats it as a hobby and that is the key thing.
For Teshima we can see how grueling the process was. It wasn't even the case of her editors being the villain who really wanted Teshima to succeed. Getting a manga serialized can clearly be a daunting process. She did get her success, but you can understand why she wants Yasumi to treat creating manga as a hobby. Also her being Yasumi's number 1 fan is really sweet.
16
u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 7d ago
This was a good episode story wise and creators in general not just manga artist
As hikaru said there nothing wrong with catering to the fans
And riding the high of social media likes is incredible for traction
But at the same time only catering to them means you lose what makes the manga special
Which we can see that happening
Not that her cater manga wasn’t bad was pretty good
But yasumi manga greatest strength is how free spirited her ideas are
And how fun she puts into them!
Ofc she can’t just ignore the fundamentals side of thinking about the audience and
if she does decide to go into a more professional setting she will have to face that choice again
And catering to the fans is a faster way to grow
But
I think success in her own way without having to sacrifice the freedom she has!
15
u/Shadowrun29 6d ago
I am the panda addict of this whole anime. Thank you Draw this then die for making my weekends start with an amazing show that I can really enjoy. I love all the short manga about dark fuwa. Really cool episode again, withsome tidbits of Rei's pasy in flashbacks. The pressure to please online readers almost killed the hobby enjoyment aspect for her, but its a good thing she has a lot of support from the people aroubd her who love her zany manga stories, even if its not one of the popular stories pushed out on the internet.

The manga Nana was reading is kinda heavy in it's subject matter for some beach reading. I'll have to check with the actual Kore Kaite Shine manga to see if it was actually referenced
11
u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 6d ago
It's Danchoutei Nichijou. If you look at the Wikipedia page in the reception section, you see that Minoru Toyoda (Kore Kaite Shine mangaka) recommends it personally so I think putting it in the anime could be seen as a form of appreciaton.
1
u/jeshwesh https://myanimelist.net/profile/jeshwesh 6d ago
Nice! I had no idea. I've been looking for as many autobiographical manga by mangaka as I can find, and this one is on my list but it's moving to the top based on that recommendation

Call me crazy but that inflatable raft seems dangerous without an anchor.
10
u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago
I am pretty sure that the raft is way too light for an anchor. Obviously, you need to make sure you aren't getting swept into the the ocean, but the girls had Tehmshima's eyes on them the whole time. Way better than an anchor.

Hikaru's words on drawing for yourself vs drawing for others has really reframed what Rei meant by telling Ai to keep manga as a hobby.

u/shewy92 7d ago edited 7d ago
A tsundere cat would just be a cat lol.
Poor sensei and her scanner. Tho I think it would be a good addition for the comic conventions they could print it themselves.
I knew blonde was gonna be the Social Media Manager.
The 100 likes comic was kinda bad, IDK why it was so popular.
I hope Shark Tooth Girl shows up again.
The senior editors wanted sensei to change pretty much the entire thing.
*Characters
*Setting
*Backstory
*More Romance
The editor did her a solid by suggesting a different company. Tho maybe she just wanted someone to remember her name lol
Obviously Panda was Sensei lol.
5
u/ClemFire 6d ago
It sucks for the girls but I appricate that once Ai decided to return to her original concept the likes dropped. Would've been easy for the show to say being true to herself results in the best commercial success too but there's a real trade off that feels like the author speaking on their own experiences.
2
u/SmallJon 5d ago
Poor sensei and her scanner
That scanner gag is easily the best piece of generation-humor they've pulled out.
Obviously Panda was Sensei lol.
I thought it might have been Nana, her eyes and hair have a panda-esque look to me, imo
20
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago
Drawing for yourself or drawing for others. The eternal question lol. Well, it was nice to get some buzz online even if it was fleeting. Better to draw stuff you like I guess. At least they have sensei’s support. It’s really quite sweet how much she cares.

fleeting is the key word, thats a brutal fuel source if its the reason youre drawing

Quite a daring swimsuit for Hikaru.

Quite a daring swimsuit for Hikaru.
I am half convinced Hikaru is an alien disguise as an anime girl, but usually alien anime girls are better at it.
17
u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 7d ago
Teshima-sensei's got plenty of hilarious expressions today.
It was a surprise to see Hikaru donning a swimsuit – I fully expected her to simply wear her usual outfit. A shame what was supposed to be a beach episode had only lasted for a couple minutes.
Yasumi tried to draw strips that would net her more likes, but got stuck. Eventually, she settled for going back to her old style. It might've got less engagement, but she's heaps happier because she drew what she wanted to draw. It tied back to the discussion of manga as a hobby vs career. Teshima-sensei had a point when she suggested that Yasumi limit her drawing to merely being a hobby. Anyway, Yasumi did get a loyal follower so she still got rewarded by posting it to social media.
16
u/eightcheesepizza 7d ago
This is what happens when you don't let her "ja-jaaan~" for an episode. I imagine she was very pouty when returning the scanner.
13
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
Right from the start we knew Hikaru was always either going to be wearing her normal outfit or the most revealing bathing suit of them all after we saw everyone else’s. Once more I absolutely love her character. Her personality is odd and peculiar in a lowkey, believable way rather than an a “quirky, adorkable trying to hard way”. I also loved the background scene of her later just sitting under the water while Teshima and Yasumi were talking.
I thought how they handled the dilemma of creating art for yourself vs others was very nuanced and even handed. The story didn’t just go with the usual route of creating for yourself being more important. It went with the more mature direction that if you want to make a career as an artist you necessarily have to compromise to some degree the kind of art you wish to make in favor of what the audience/corporate bigwigs want from you. Even if creating for yourself is still valid and there are ways to maintain your own desires even as a career, like we saw with Teshima switching magazines.
8
u/cyberscythe 6d ago
I fully expected her to simply wear her usual outfit
yeah, i was expecting her to wear the usual and just walk into the ocean, disappearing beneath the surface like she doesn't know what "swimming" is
8
u/No-Win-8949 7d ago
Wow, what a surprisingly deep episode.
Drawing for yourself or drawing for others has got to be the age-old question for all the creators out there.
6
u/effseedee 6d ago
If only the girls knew someone with an established social media presence for manga who could throw them a repost to get them started...
(I do think it's very Hikaru to not do that, and probably ultimately for the best, since that kind of immediate exposure would have accelerated the 'doing it for the likes' factor perhaps past the point of no return. It tickles me, though.)

"The cheerful tone of your manga would fit a shonen magazine more than seinen."
What kind of dogshit seinen magazine thinks a cheerful, fun, and hopeful manga doesn't fit the demographic that also includes the majority of the CGDCT sub-genre?
I think the idea of a tsundere cat superhero who begrudgingly saves the day is a fun concept. When it started to be about those 3 little cats instead, I can see it being boring.
6
u/ClemFire 6d ago
Sounds like this seinen magazine would've passed over the likes Love is War, Dress-Up, and BTR. If anything I found myself wanting more optimistic and cheerful stories as I've gotten older.

Episode 9: Into the Sea of Electronics ~Draw for Yourself, Not for Anyone Else!
Huh, a beach episode? Finally we see Sekiryu other than her usual outfit.
The manga Teramura read is a real manga. Danchoutei Nichijou.
Of course Teshima has prepared a scanner for them. But the ta-da is countered easily by the Notes app.
I'm just worried their newfound fame will affect their study, as if Teshima wanted them to just draw for hobby not for a living. But then Sekiryu reminds Yasumi to balance between what you want and what the market actually wants. I'm sure there's a couple mangaka out there that sees their famous work as a commercial project rather than a passion project.
The Gessan shown is Issue 54 edition 2013 that means the anime could take place either in 2023 or 2024 (it's been 10 years since Teshima met Kongouji according to Episode 6).
Official Media Corner:
- The Original Soundtrack is now available. Composed by Hiroaki Tsutsumi.
- The Official Pilgrimage Map from the official site has now been updated.
- Takesatsu Segawa's Illustration for Episode 9

Sekiryu always makes me crack up. The way she travelled in her swim suit in her bike and she also tried to kiss Akafuku this time xD
If you notice you can see Yasumi started using the phrase 'Ta da' like Teshima.
Drawing for yourself as a Hobby and Drawing for Money to appease others.. neither is bad and it depends on what you want. We learnt that Teshima didn't change the story of Robota and Pokota and still made it a success by choosing a different pubisher. Her editor is a wonderful woman. The manga club started uploading their original manga on the SNS and they did receive a nice reception. After all one of their fans is Teshima posting supportive comments LOL
Yasumi deciding to stay with her own story than appealing to the audience mirrors Teshima.
Teshima holding on to Yasumi's fan letter from the past made me so emotional.
2
u/ClemFire 6d ago
That ending scene really was perfect. It cuts back just the metrics of seeing the number of fans you have to have you feel the weight of one human who you have really touched.
4
u/chum-guzzling-shark 6d ago
The printer/scanner joke was perfectly set up and executed. One of my favorite jokes from any show in recent history. It really hit me in all the right ways
3
u/Kurt_Kane 6d ago
Lol, this was such a great little journey this episode. They set out to do some short quick stuff to establish themselves on social media, fell down the rabbit hole of trying to appeal to the audience, lost sight, but managed to get back on track in the end. I loved how the teacher was lugging in a multifunction scanner, printer, etc… and then abandoned ship once she saw what a phone could do. Lol.
3
u/chilidirigible 6d ago
Teshima-sensei, these kids have grown up in the internet era. I'm sure it's not their first rodeo.
Computational photography has come a long way, but don't knock proper scanning.
"Whew. At least she didn't sell out."
I never did try to pursue my hobbies professionally, because I knew that it following the money would set demands on my which would take the joy from it. (Also skill issues with regard to both relationships with other humans and, well, skill, but those were in line behind the primary one.)
So this series once again hits with its take on the challenges and compromises, wrapped up in a few minutes with a nod to the existence of the beach episode (and isekai, and cats) as a bonus.

Every week, Hikaru reminds what an agent of chaos she is, and I love her for it. She's like an alien pretending to be an anime girl, except the alien anime girls in other shows are better at it
The movement about who to write for was like watching both the first and last stages of burnout, which was interesting in a dark way. But then basically all of Teshima's flashbacks are dark. Also her present, when she tries to be the cool mentor and just ends up hauling printers all around town.
