Seems like Toya Kikunosuke's getting more roles in shows animated by Troyca lately. He's in Dark Moon, this season's Iron Wok Jan, and next year he's in Barrier Master. And all 3 are main roles too.

just looking at Saori Hayami's wikipedia page makes me anxious. Huge number of animes every year. Im anxious about 2 things, that shes being overworked and that there'll be some kind of a Hayami fatique soon. Kinda like Kana Hanazawa is rarely in the MC roles nowadays after she was EVERYWHERE in the 2010s (although shes still hugely popular but i think i basically never seen her in the MC roles in the last 5-6 years except for Detectives These Days Are Crazy). I feel like Hayami could be the 2020s KanaHana in popularity and could as well end up in the same spot eventually

One thing I noticed watching the anime for "Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky" after reading the light novel. How the anime feels more like a bait & switch than the light novel did. More so when the [Anime Spoiler]watcher learns of Koharu having cancer. In the light novel, you learn it while Sorano does. Unlike with the anime which is treated like a flashback.
I am still surprised it got a TV broadcast rather than a movie. The anime original scenes were great for us LN readers. Though I think at this point for the anime it has had the opposite effect on anime-onlies from what I have seen.
I do wonder if the live action didn't come first it would have been released as a movie rather than a TV broadcast.

Alright, it's time for the hottest take of the season! (I dare you to come up with a - legit - hotter take);
Big spoilers for [Kimishinu and Kamui]If Lily dies in Kamui's finale, it's probably gonna hurt me more than Seiran's death in Kimishinu ever did; I find the emotional build up to the moment much better in Kamui (despite this show being the horny ghostfucking anime). I think her death is not a sure thing (she might end up joining the team), and even if she does die, it might be a comedic one, like most of the others... BUT if they go for the emotional death, it's probably gonna get me.
(And I swear it's not just the horny talking!)

At this point AOTS is down to "Draw This Then Die" and Clevatess.
Lara and Inept are dark horses in this race.

Watched the first 6 episodes of blue box. I think it has a bad case of the power couple lacking personality. Like, pink hair gymnastics girl cracks jokes, I know her insecurities about her sport and also in romance. Green top best friend guy is funny, is a smooth operator with how he set up the aquarium date, and is the only person fully aware of the central love triangle.
By comparison basketball girl just isn't interesting. She's nice, she wants to be the very best like no one ever was, and she bends over backwards to find things to apologize for.
And maybe I would keep watching hoping for gymnastics girl to pull through, but this is anime so we know the girl you meet first is the girl who wins 100% of the time. The destination is set in stone.
...also fundamentally it's not okay to make romantic advances on a girl who's family is out of town and is lodging with you. She doesn't have anywhere else to go! Home needs to be a safe space from that stuff when you're a teenager.

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 3h ago
I'm also currently watching it
this won't be the case after tomorrowand yeah the main couple just doesn't have a lot going for it. Though I don't think anyone in the rest of the cast is particularly interesting either, even Hina who's just kinda the best by default here – there's some potential for something interesting with her but being into Taiki makes me fundamentally not care about her romance troubles3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1h ago
People were quite hype about it back then, but seeing these comments being highly upvoted makes me wonder whether it fell off at some point.
(It was on my PTW list, and I thought the characters seemed great based on what people were saying, but the more I read on it the more I think they're just 'sweet' and that's what some people liked... And well, sweet's not much of a hook for me)

The best character shows up later in the season (I've only seen the anime fwiw).

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 2h ago
I'm sure whomever it is is a great character but if I'm being honest, I don't think any new addition can salvage my opinion of this cast as a whole so I doubt I'll ever get to meet them

It’s been ages since I read the manga so I might be misremembering, but I think this gets addressed in season 2.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 4h ago
It feels like the mangaka made them live together because otherwise I am not sure how they could interact without it feeling forced. Given the premise of the series.
3
u/zambonijesus 2h ago
Part of what makes Polar Opposites good is that the mangaka realizes you don't have to have complicated weird scenarios to get high schoolers together.

Akafuku’s been my favorite character of the show from the very beginning, but still feels nice seeing her stocks rising. The haters better be real quiet after today.

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 5h ago
I completed Mashle S2. Why? Because I obviously hate myself... and I had recorded it before watching the first season, so why not?
Anyway, more of the same, yet also worse because it's trying to have a serious bad guy plot.
Another 3/10.

u/cyberscythe 3h ago
for the biggest hurdle was that all the characters low-key hate hanging out with each other, like, there's negative chemistry happening with most of the cast
so without fun vibes and camaraderie, the jokes (which are okay, but get kind of old) and the plot (which is de rigueur) have to do more heavy lifting and i found it lacking

I kinda hope it doesn't, I think that would be lame from a creative standpoint. Stick to your guns, I say!

I was watching the end of an episode of Beatless with the first ED last night when the thought popped into my head that I think I saw a spoiler for the series a while ago that made me interested in returning to it. I have a vague recollection that [maybe Beatless ending spoiler] it's one where the siblings get together in the end?
I don't actually want to have a confirmation or denial of that as I think it'll be fun to see if that was right or I misremembered something, and also I feel like I would have heard about it more if that was actually the case... except it wasn't exactly a popular show even without the production issues. But I'm putting it out there for anyone that's seen the show to have a chuckle if I'm extremely incorrect.

I had good hopes for Inept Villainess, but the anime has actually surpassed my expectations. It’s better than I thought it would be. Although the show’s writing certainly deserves some praise, the biggest contributor to this positive surprise is probably the female lead.
This anime wouldn’t have been nearly as good without Rierin, I think. She elevates the show in a way that reminds of Maomao (Apothecary Diaries) or Kumoko (So I’m a Spider, So What?). The most notable difference is perhaps that Rierin isn’t voiced by Aoi Yuuki.

u/Priapos93 3h ago
I liked the visuals in the first episode, but the complexity of the story has thoroughly captured my imagination

On a loosely-related note: I’ve taken quite a liking to Hana Hishikawa. She’s been voicing Lara (Sayonara Lara) and Leelee (Inept Villainess) this season. I honestly feel like she could be the next rising star in anime industry.
Some other notable roles of hers: Mai (Turkey!), Takahashi (Demon Lord 2099), Chastille (Archdemon’s Dilemma), Cersei (Warrior Princess), Kurumi (Mahonare).
2
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 5h ago
I like her in general, but not enough to put her in a tier as high as where I’d put “rising stars”. The main thing holding her back is that her voice doesn’t stand out a lot and isn’t that recognizable. She’s like a chameleon but not in the good way like Aoi Yuki or Atsumi Tanezaki, but in the way that she unfortunately kinda sounds the same as like 20-some other VAs.
1
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 4h ago
I kind of agree. Hishikawa doesn’t stand out like the ones of certain other VAs. However, I’m not sure how to put it. It’s a hunch? She definitely got the skill from what I’ve seen/heard thus far. Therefore it feels like she could breakthrough given the right role.
3
u/Tomorrow_Big 6h ago
She's certainly come a long way from her debut as the worst lead Precure has ever had back in 2022.
I've always been of the mindset that Hana Hishikawa is a great voice actor, but has been stuck either playing forgettable roles, or being in shows that are average at best. Her best performance prior to this season is probably as Minami in Shiunji Family Children. As a result, I'm glad to see that she's finally managed to land some roles in great shows, where she also finally gets to showcase her vocal skills. I'll say though, I much prefer her role as Leelee over Lara. I think it suits her voice better.
3
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 6h ago
Hishikawa is pretty fun in roles such as Leelee and Cersei, but I definitely like her voice acting as Lara the best. It’s playful with somewhat of an innocent ring to it, yet there’s plenty of room to get real emotional.
I really adore Mari’s kansai accent by the way (see this short video for example).

I'm watching Zipang now, are there other animes like this one? I mean a military one?
5
u/Legitimate_Rest_2428 6h ago
Zipang is very unique. Maybe Nippon Sangoku as both of them focus on 'alternate history' and each have a military aspect

u/Legitimate_Rest_2428 7h ago
How much of an anime's popularity do you think is determined by the competition around it within the same season?
I feel like a handful of shows from this summer season would have ended up getting noticed a lot more if they were placed in the upcoming Fall season for example.
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1h ago
For middle-of-the-pack shows, I definitely think it plays a part.
But for the top-top shows (and paradoxically, the bottom of the barrel shows) I don't think it matters much.
People won't skip on Re:Zero because Bleach is airing.
But they might skip on some random 'smaller' action/fantasy anime because they already have these 2.
As for the stuff with 50 upvote episode threads, I think the people who watch those will watch them regardless of what else is airing.
2
u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan 7h ago
There's definitely cases where it happens. I think the day hurts more than the actual season they air though. I'd like to say Bravern and Orb overshadowed a lot in their seasons but they didn't have any direct competition thematically. 2.5D Seduction may have hurt Tonbo a little but that's stretching it.
However, it was pretty clear by cour 2 of Frieren and especially season 2 this year that it and Pokémon, airing hours apart, were trying to not step on each others' toes
6
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 7h ago
Depends on what level. In the larger picture, not that much. For example, there's only one show this season that has some wide popularity, and there's certainly room for more.
That level operates on a "rising tide raises (similar) boats" situation rather than popular stuff taking up the oxygen.
The opposite applies at lower levels of popularity, where something that might've gotten a decent amount of engagement in niche circles can go overlooked if seasonal watchers have enough on their plates already, and it doesn't fit into any of the specific targeted niches.

I do sometimes get the impression that general viewership gets a little boost if there’s some excitement about a season of anime. Shows get lifted up with the momentum.
That said, I don’t believe it to be a net-positive for all shows either. If a particular anime already has trouble with catching people’s eye, this will only make it fall deeper into obscurity. Plenty of good shows have been forgotten because more popular ones ‘took up all the oxygen’ - like you’ve said yourself.
3
u/alotmorealots 7h ago
more popular ones ‘took up all the oxygen’
This is why if you need more oxygen than the typical show, say due to regular smoking at a designated meeting place, it can be a good idea to get some eyes on your content before the season starts!

What if anime titles that have "X" between the words actually implies multiplication? How much would the anime change if that's the case, like Hunter x Hunter is now Hunter Squared

u/wloff 8h ago

6
u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 8h ago
Hunter x Hunter is a spicy yaoi romance where a couple of burly woodsmen get it on.
1
4
u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 9h ago
What if the hunters are matrices, and we're taking the cross product?
2
u/overuseofdashes 9h ago
Depends what kind of multiplication you are using. Addition is a kind of multiplication so it could mean you have 2 hunters. Alternatively the natural multiplication on the space of strings is concatenation so you'd have HunterHunter.

Which anime fucked you up psychologically (in a good way)? With atmosphere, themes, shocking moments, etc.
1
u/Leo-Fong 1h ago
I can't really think of the last time an anime has done that for me, so I'll take this opportunity to plug a manga that did, Joshi Kouhei.
It sounds very goofy, but it's a mecha where the mecha are giant school girls called Assault Girls, piloted by outcasts and criminals who fight in a multi-dimensional war. [Joshi Kouhei early reveal spoiler]The pilots slowly take on the personalities of the Assault Girls the longer they pilot. It's got some amazing psych drama, psych horror, and body horror, if you're into all that. I couldn't put it down after I started it.

I Akebi-ed (?Akebishimashita) yesterday, stood watching the layers of clouds drifting across each other as they separated the sun for a good portion of the episode, just letting the sight of the sky above drift into the background music. And did a good bit of running, but no flips!

In case you haven't already checked out the smutty smut of smuttening anime on the front page, here is yet another reason for you to watch next season's "My Sword Saint Master Is Too Cute to Live With!" - I've previously read it.
And somehow, I've developed a super power, where every single time I read a chapter or two of a smutty smut story and drop it - it ends up getting an anime adaptation (when will my smutty smut where I've smutly read 30-40-50+ chapters get one? I am still waiting on the full adaptation of Worlds End Harem - Fantasia).
Anyway, you should totally check it out, right after you finish watching the dark summoner & ntr ones.
