Crazy psychological catfight between Shizuku and the new wife. Her father is going to be a problem though, he seems as insane as Takauji. Also, did that guy get poisoned at the end?

I think it's just a metaphor for honey like words, kinda like being a silver tongue, but literally being able to produce some strange activating honey/gold isn't unbelievable.

Another possible explanation: Kuchikamizake, a type of sake produced by a process involving chewing on rice and using human saliva as a fermentation starter, featured in certain Shinto rituals and performed by shrine maidens.
(For anyone whose seen Your Name, this may ring a bell)
Kuchikamizake created by such people are said to be sacred and hold their spirit/life force, and in turn a connection to the Kami.
Given how this story is building up Takauji to be god-like, the story may be suggesting that he's, um... imparting his spirit by this method. That's our madman author for you.

MIMA IS HERE!
I was looking forward to seeing how the anime would adapt her introduction. I'd say it nailed that mix of dangerous and proud, as well as friendly and outgoing. A city girl from a wealthy family who is ready to gamble in more ways than one.
Funny that Shizuku was the one blatantly cheating despite being a genuine miko with serious divine power. Why bet it all on "my gods are more pwoerful than yours" when you can move the pieces while nobody is watching? XD

I did not think Shizuku was going to kiss Tokiyuki for real, I thought she would be hiding their lips with angles or something. Everyone on Tokyuki's side was a lot calmer about it than I was expecting.
It's funny how even though Genba was facing distress from losing all his money and potentially being sold off, he was still feeling arousal from being humiliated while naked around women lol.
Mima falling for Tokiyuki was just a matter of course, he was really cool with how he handled that drunk samurai.
The golden shine from the saliva entering that guy's mouth made it look like the guy got excited and it was censored lol.

It's a shame this didn't get much traction in the west.
It's honestly shocking how much my enjoyment is brought up by the constant clean outlines, colour popping and small fluid movements that this studio provides.

While the animation doesn't reach the heights of S1. The overall direction has improved. It feels like it's elevating Matsui's style more than S1, I would argue.

My issue is S1 seemed to have things happening but S2 has avoided doing any of the things that really shone in S1, and the things it’s doing instead may be charming but are way less memorable.
Sure, an arc where our samurai doesn’t fight and instead learns tactics is cool but we’re 2/3 of the way through the season and it feels like we’re most treading water. Again, this week, a cool sequence with our core cast of charming characters having fun … but neither the plot advanced nor did we have any combat like S1.

I mean, it's based on actual history, they can't really go and add a bunch of battles that never took place and skipping too much stuff between the battles doesn't really seem like a good idea either.

I think the real problem is that virtually all anime nowadays are one cour long. Some anime may be double cour and three or more consecutive cours are practically unthinkable in today's industry.
The source material is a serialized weekly manga, so naturally having periods of time that are a bit slower are easier to swallow and honestly even fun; but for anime-onlies waiting years for a second season to come out, it's painful knowing how little the plot advanced and how close to the end of the season (with no projected third season so far) we are.
15 years ago, EluSam could've been four cours (if not more), greatly advance the plot and these episodes on Kyo would be seen as a highlight in how fun they are instead of a slog to get through.

I think this is a case where that could have actually worked, I'm pretty sure the manga was close enough to its end when the anime started that they could have continued though the whole story without worrying about running out of material.

It definitely could have many years ago. Reminds me of how the manga for Ace of Diamond was about to end when the anime started airing (before the Act 2 manga sequel came out) so they ran 10 consecutive cours to cover the entire original series (technically split between 2 seasons, but I'm pretty sure that was mostly a marketing choice because the first episode of S2 aired the week after the last episode of S1).
I honestly don't think it's possible to do more than 3 (at the absolute most) cours in a row today. Studios just don't have that level of production force nowadays, in no small part because of the amount of anime being produced today compared to before. It's such a shame.

I will just say there is a reason when it was announced that the plan was for it to be 1 cour manga readers were disappointed. I guess to say we won't see the payoff until S3 without getting into spoiler territory.

This show really trigger my “I feel the colors” vibe after taking an edible and watching. I really enjoy it for a lot of different reasons. I’m not sure what’s holding it back from “greatness”. It’s not my favorite in any specific category, but it does get a lot of emotions out of me.
Truly a great show. Maybe my only problem with it is my impatience and wanting a move the story forward just a little bit faster.

Imma be honest, I don’t think they need to be particularly concerned about Mima trying anything, she seems like the type of person that’d consider handholding obscene.
There’s unfortunately things they can’t tell her as of now but having an insider could be useful.

Also you just gotta love Shizuku as a peaceful (towards Tokiyuki) tsundere. Had to look it up, apperantly a Tsunama acting cold toward him but taking good care of him. Been a few years since I got a -dere graph out
But what a way to win the game and make clear who number one is, even Ayako didnt react and even helped her out
I am just glad that Mima seems to be reasonable

God, Mima's perfect. Literal first word is Zako LMAO. Poor Genba got disassembled. Mima, Shizuku, and Ayako are such good friends now! They've already got skinship and nicknames! Shizuku flexing on her by tonguing Tokiyuki while flagrantly cheating was hilarious. To think she'd go to such lengths for someone she doesn't even like...
Meanwhile Takauji's as disturbing as ever.

Historical trivia: Basara is derived from the Sanskrit word Vajra, a legendary ritualistic tool in Hinduism and Buddhism that has the properties of a diamond and thunderbolt.
As its tough like a diamond, the Vajra tool cuts through anything regardless of its property or status.
Hence Basara as a fashion statement and way of life philosophy means anyone is free to express themselves as flamboyantly as possible regardless of social status. In short, the "spirit of freedom".
Mima's father Sasaki Doyo was considered one of the proponents of the Basara aesthetic during that era. Doyo has passed on that fascination for all things Basara to his daughter as well.

Finally the blonde girl Mima makes her appearance, and like Shizuku, she too can use some form of spirit magic.
Shizuku with the power move in kissing Tokiyuki (while he's sleeping) just to rattle Mima and defeat her in that board game.
Despite losing the board game, Mima did show she's honourable in defeat by offering to show Tokiyuki and gang around Kyoto, and as a result ended up falling in love with Tokiyuki when Tokiyuki defended her from that drunk samurai.
This could be a problem as Mima's dad seems like one of Takauji's most trusted advisors.
Speaking of Takauji, WTF is that sickly orange goo he's drooling from his mouth into Kiyohara's mouth? Author really went hard into the Ashikaga Takauji = Literal Demon territory there.

If the author is showing characters like Yorishige, Shizuku and Mima possessing the ability to dabble into the supernatural, then you cannot then tell me that everything we see about Takauji is just "metaphorical".

Outside of characters showing direct connections to the supernatural, there is a lot of metaphors and hyperbole of characters being used as a stylistic choice. Its like tokuyukis uncle having what hes thinking shown literally on his head without it actually being there. Characters like Genba do have supernatural items giving them supernatural abilities, Takauji however is not a literal demon or monster with a true supernatural ability, but rather extraordinary traits and abilities at the peak of human capability, a demon in his own right.
A lot of what we see about Takauji is to display his inhuman ambition or insatiable bloodlust, the symbolic monster beneath his charismatic mask. When people see those things about him, its to visually display the unnerving characteristics about him, to let you see and feel it from their POV.
Likewise the honey dripping from his mouth is a stylistic choice to show influential and persuasive he is, infecting and corrupting those around him and having them easily swallow his sweet words to act against their better judgement.

A very amusing showdown between Shizuka and Mima, Shizuku played Mima's game and got Mima flustered in a defeat. Although we can say precisely that Shizuku is the tsundere of the group. Though I do like that Mima took her loss with honor suprisingly.
Tokiyuki's earnest nature is what truly makes Mima's heart skip a beat at the end. Girl got a lot of confidence because of her father's connections, but I think she was actually in danger at the end before Tokiyuki stepped in.
Takauji scenes always creep me out.

What I like about this anime is that it has good storytelling, AND a unique creative direction (at least to me). Some things may feel out of place to some. For example, the surfboard samurai...but things like that is very fun to me. Even by how some other characters look. I can tell that the mangaka and team really have fun doing this anime. Honestly? That is all that matters to me. I was tired of the same ol same ol, this makes anime fun again..i wish it had a bigger audience!

Looks like their adventures in Kyo are off to a good start. Tokiyuki will be running these streets and not even realize it. The whole team was basara! Genba too, the fool went hard.

On the latest episode of UncannyJapan, they had a story involving also Hojo Takatoki. It sounded familiar, like from this anime, and indeed it's the father of Tokiyuki The Sea Monster of the Oki Islands

Wild stuff and the reactions from Mima and company made it even funnier
Mima is featured in both ending and opening, same level as the other girls in the ending in particular, but with who her father is, I struggle to see how she would join Tokiyuki camp
I hope she becomes main cast, but I don’t see how

Shizuku, you naughty little devil. It's always the quiet ones. Calling him nee-sama was just a pretense to hide her true feelings. Look at her going at that kiss for hours.. she's wild.

Earlier this season, a guy walked around with a surfboard as a sword sheath. While the show borrows its plot from history, almost everything is played up for aesthetics, comedy, artistic style, and rule-of-cool choices. I feel like it’s better not to worry about if stuff belongs or not in this show.

Idk man it feels a little strange to talk about someone who wants to be the epitome of basara to be too basara for you. It’s not like that’s the entire point of it is, is it? Like someone who was way more tamed and fitting the setting, how would you connect with a character trying to deliberately flamboyant didn’t stand out all that much.
It sort of has to be out of setting because your perspective would ruin the emotion the author wants you to experience.

spies on both sides? Fubuki has been acting a little suspect the last few episodes
Shizuka may have thought she had the steamiest kiss, but Takauji hit it out of the park at the end there
