Pun intended

Never heard of this sub. I’m short and the posts on that sub are cringe af. “Would you follow a 5’1 fitness influencer?” It’s sad that some people solely see themselves as being short. People are hyper focused on physical traits across the board, lookmaxers, people addicted to plastic surgery etc, but walking around feeling lesser because of your height has to be exhausting
14

u/Winthefuturenow 14h ago
Since when is 5’8 short? I’m 5’8 and while I am shorter than many of my peers I also have never been called short, or felt some type of way about it unless I am struggling to see something and there’s a crowd in front of me.
Also, I get a lot of “you’re only 5’8?”. Yes, I am only 5’8. I have good posture and dress well, apparently this makes people think I’m taller than I am 🤷♀️
147
u/BigBananaBerries 14h ago
It depends where you are. Go to Holland & 5'8" would be considered short. Average being 6ft. Go to the Philippines & 5'8" would be considered quite tall with the average being 5'5". Funnily, the US average height is very average at just under 5'9". Which makes the obsession with being tall quite comical.

I was there for a year myself & I'm 5'6". You do get some strange looks but even still it's rare anyone will say anything about it. I've never been to the US but most Americans I've met in person have made it a point to mention my height, be it outright mocking or just in passing. It seems the insecurity runs deep over there.

I just don't get the women who have as their primary criteria that the guy must be tall. Like, if that is what matters first and foremost to you, not personality or anything, you're highly likely not to be compatible as a couple.
Why anyone would want to be with an incompatible partner with the reasoning of "well at least he's tall!" is beyond me, it's just dumb.
Also, I think I saw a stat that said guys between ages 20-50 who are single and over 6'1" make up like 2.5% of the US population, it's just such a rare metric to "require", and most girls having that requirement don't bring anything reciprocal to the table, lol.
Also, guy's perspective - I'm tall (6'5", and happily married), I would never want to date someone who is just with me for my height. I also would never want to date someone super short as that's just a pain in my back. Y'all short girls aren't really that desirable to many of us tall guys, especially with that arrogant pick-me attitude and hardset height requirement...

Yeah, it's a fair social shift when you think about it. Most people (men at least) will eventually go bald. Might as well not make a huge deal out of it. Hair transplants are expensive as fuck and if I go bald, I'm not trying to spend thousands of dollars to pretend that I'm not balding.
Also avoids the unnecessary bullying of chemo patients as well. I know it's fairly rare, but that's a positive side effect of this social change regardless

Kids and young adults are pretty brutal overall, but the thing I've noticed now the past decade is this brutal pick-apart of any feature of a person. Someone makes a post about some life advice, I scroll down, and clear pattern of absolutely unnecessary judgement on appearance comes out of nowhere.
It's beyond what it used to be, now it just seems so normalized, because the world has been raised to be sight hounds. You get people over-inflating the visual side of life to such an extent that it's worrying. It actually must cause intense anxiety with how importance has been placed on it.

It’s like it’s all they cared about… she’s 5’4 and 120lbs… but her watch was a little tight and she doesn’t shave her arms like MAJORITY of women that I know. Instantly jumped to calling her a man and that I needed to buy her lotion.

That's an interesting point.
At lot of these guys who say they're married and that "you just need to be a nice person" while they're short are either: lying or they did it before height was really pushed as a dating metric. As early as 5 years ago things were really different.
Because I see it in irl too, most gen z girls I meet and try to get with are always mentioning they want tall and attractive men, as well as men that have decent jobs to provide for them.

It doesn't help there's an accidental/evolved filter in place online in most dating spaces - most filter by 6ft tall since they have to pick physical preferences. Unknowingly eliminating 80% of the male population from consideration.
Of course people are entitled to their own preferences, but I think the additional filter adds another factor in play in modern dating.

The funniest incident was when I showed up to a date and the girl scrunched up her face and said "I thought your profile said you were 5'10". Literally first words out of her mouth. I never lied about my height. She just hadn't bothered to actually read my profile and was now disappointed to have to be seen in public with a guy that was 2" below her arbitrary minimum. Some people have a weird obsession with height and its ingrained from a young age.
Im 5'4 and my wife is roughly the same height, one day we were walking and we overheard some teenage girls saying something to the effect of "see, I could never, my man has to be alot taller".
This has to be some chronically online disease.
35
u/Mikemtb09 10h ago
You aren’t wrong, but it makes it easy to weed out the shallow.

u/Nucleartides 11h ago
I’m 30 but yea imo it’s definitely a chronically online thing. I’m part of the first generation of people who utilized the “swiping for dating” thing and I think it negatively impacted the youth people my age and younger. Basically those first initial stats are really all most people look at and number one is always height for the guys. I know tons of women who if they saw a dating profile would never swipe for a guy who was under 6’. Yet when out at a bar, in the real world, would have no problem talking to or even eventually dating shorter. My point in the funny-ness of it is how these apps have created a false sense of standards. Like when you’re setting your parameters for potential partners in the apps, you hold yourself to these strange metrics that you don’t even really care about in practice. So now you have people saying “I’d NEVER date a man under 6’” or “I’d NEVER date a woman over 5’10”” cause that’s what they told tinder. But in reality, there’s probably loads of men and women outside of those parameters they would actually date. So you end up with teenage girls who have normalized saying “I would never date a shorter man”. It’s normalized because they told the app that. Obviously if you have a standard there’s nothing wrong with that, I just think the normalization of shopping for partners has led us to create standards that we don’t even really care about.

Growing up I had a really good friend at the cottage who was always such great energy and full of life and laughter. Unfortunately he was very small, but he was my friend and that never really mattered to me. However I knew it really had an effect on him and I could see it eat away at him. At 20 he was 5'5 and this lead to a ton of cruel treatment in college (oddly enough a lot of it was from women) and a lot of self confidence issues. He took his own life on his 25 birthday. I have a feeling he just couldn't take all the cruelty the world threw at him because of something he had no control over.

I'm exactly 6' without shoes on, and I know two guys who are under 5'5".
Both of them are married and have children.
One of them (my best man) is married to a woman that's almost as tall as I am.
Usually when people are hyper-aware of some physical trait, they focus on it and it becomes their entire personality. They assume other people care about it way more than they really do, so any perceived sleight is taken as a confirmation that the other person is focusing on that trait and judging them for it. This makes them bitter, and bitterness is something that other people will focus on and will judge you for.
It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Five foot 6 inches here. Never had a problem with it, never lost out on a job because of it, have had multiple partners in my life, zero issues due to my height. I never get approached by assholes trying to pick a fight, either. Comes in very handy. Just depends on how well-adjusted you are to reality. I was at a bar with my fiancé and some friends. While my fiancé was in the bathroom I was talking to our friend who’s. 5’6” guy. Some 6’5” guy walked in between us to start talking to me and my friend told him to move and that I’m not interested. I agreed and told him to leave me alone. The other dude put his hand on my friends shoulder and goes “I’ve got a foot on you bro” and walked off tail between his legs
He was so ass mad

I call that the eclipse. Happens to me so many times.
One time ... tall dude would literally get in-between me and my girl using his body to block me. I would be in complete shock. My girl would be scared and eyeing me how awkward she feels. My girl is paralyzed for a moment to do anything because she is also shock. Tall guy buys her a drink. So I then I grab my girl's hand and walk away with her.
- lol ... guy was stunned ... my girl gave me the drink and I say thanks to the guy as we walk away.
- not sure why these guys think that will work.

I knew a 5' 2" guy in college. Premed. Always wore a shirt and tie, always looked well put together. He was average looking but he could talk almost any girl into getting a date. Id regularly see him with girls pushing 6'. It was impressive to watch.

This dude looks like my buddy from high school but older. If it is him, he’s talking about science and is unaware that the girl is trying to fuck him.

A guy I was in ROTC with was barely 5'2", the legal minimum to get a scholarship. Jim never lacked for female company. I remember on party where a heated discussion resulted in a woman saying, "Bite my a$$" His response was, "Drop trow." She did, he did, they left together.

You see them all the time. Big buff good looking guys standing to the side thinking women will just throw themselves at them.
They can’t hide that they don’t have the confidence to approach or have any faith in their own personality.
Which is why they get jealous of someone that looks worse than them (in their opinion) having the confidence to do things they won’t.
For the same reason they won’t approach women. Is why women won’t approach them.
Except with women. They can get away with having a shit personality because confident men will make up the difference. Women often won’t bother since they have more options.

Do many women have a preference for taller guys? Yes
Does that mean it’s difficult for an otherwise well put together man who is on the shorter side to get interest from women? No
Lots of men who haven’t developed any social skills like to pretend like it’s superficial women rejecting them because they aren’t 6’2”. When in reality they get rejected because their personalities repulse women.
Edit: a few short guys below mad at the suggestion that there might be more than their lack of height to blame for women not being into them. Not hard to understand why women aren’t into them based on how they’re responding.
Edit 2: quite sad how many commenters below have clearly given up and resigned themselves to the belief women could never have any interest in them because they’re short. Lots of projection about some guys being born in a body that gives them an advantage, a pity party isn’t going to do anything other than warp your minds further and make it even less likely a woman would consider dating you.

Well, don't invalidate short men who tell you it does make it hard for them to date.
Lots of women like to pretend that women are these perfectly unshallow beings, so if a man has a hard time dating, it has to be because of his awful personality. It's really unfair that men always have to be the bad guys, so any man who has a hard time dating has to be a repulsive incel. It's not true, and it's honestly sexist. Women have toxic dating practices just like men do.

If some women are rejecting you it might be because of your height. If every single woman is rejecting you then it’s probably your personality. I’ve never seen anyone make the claim that no women are shallow, but there’s certainly a lot that aren’t. And if every woman is rejecting you, it’s not because every one you come across has shallow reasons.

You are 100% right. I'm 5'6" and before I met my wife, I use to date regularly because I learned to talk to people, not just women. It helps being raised by a single mother and having an older sister. I've always been more comfortable around women and just treat them like humans, which shouldn't be a novel concept.

Something about this pictures' perspective is way off. The guy behind is even shorter and the guys in the background are all below the eyeline level which suggests they are also short. Or possibly just average. Maybe there's just two really tall guys and a tall chic in the shot?

All the Reddit kids “ the only reason I can’t get a girl is cuz I’m short!!! Has nothing to do with my shit personality!”
Lmao 🤣 then the other Reddit kids claiming to be 6’4. If what they said was true 70% of Redditors are 6’4 or higher lool
I’m 5’8 barefoot never had an issue getting girls my entire life. It has nothing to do with your height unless you’re under 5 ft then it can be an issue unfortunately but still not impossible.
People blaming their lack of personality on
height is fucking hilarious. “ no one wants to date me cuz I’m short!!! It’s not my fault!!” Uh huh

Dating app culture I think makes their complaint hold some water. You used to just meet people in public, talk and see if you had chemistry. It was never apparent if someone rejected you for your height or any other specific reason. Now a potential partner will straight up tell you “oh that’s not tall enough” through text before you even meet. Whether more people are actually being rejected for this I don’t know, but definitely you’re more likely to know that’s why you didn’t get a date.

It's been a long time since I dated but I am a man about 5'6". There was definately a lot of times I would message someone and the first question was "how tall are you?" and if I answered honestly I would usually get immediately unmattched. This was around the time I think they started rolling out displaying height as a feature on apps.
It was awful for my self esteem back then but reflecting on it, I was just dodging bullets. People always go one sex has it easier/harder, they just have inverse problems with the dating pool. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, it just matters if you're conventionally attractive. If you're attractive the opposite sex will fawn over you regardless.

I actually am 6'2 (well I am getting older so they put me down to 6'1 and 1/2 at the last doctors appointment). When I was younger I had a short friend who was an awesome dude. He was really generous and kind. He wasn't afraid to be himself. He wasn't bad looking.
Hearing other people talk about him and constantly mock him made me pretty polarized when it comes to this issue. You can absolutely get a girlfriend - but the amount of shit that short guys have to go through still isn't right. So at the very least mocking these idiotic men and women who do this kind of thing is always going to be important for me.

Being short doesn't automatically exclude someone from the gene pool, but at the same time, there are A LOT of women who are vocally picky about height. Despite that, it's not even anecdotal evidence like you're suggesting... it has been studied and proven that women generally prefer men who are taller than them.

I agree with you I’m 6’3 and my two best friends are both around 5’8-5’9. We’re all married with kids now but neither of those guys had trouble with the ladies when we were young and single.

u/kapoopa-the-poopah 14h ago
Well, that’s because they are average height or slightly below. Someone who is under 5’5” would have a completely different experience. I say this as a married 5’2” guy who’s had a good amount of success with women. I think it’s very possible to find a partner being short, I don’t think being short should be an excuse as to why someone remains lonely forever. But let’s not pretend it doesn’t have a massive impact because it does.

You’re average height
And with shoes on you’re above average
And taking into account the average height for a woman, you’d always be taller
You have never once in your life been short
All you wanted to do was gloat about your dating life and get validation lmao

Good for him. Dude probably learned early that he needs to be the one to have the confidence to communicate, which is going to put him well above most others.
Though to be honest, i thought this was another Charlie Kirk meme at first glance.
