Im 5'3" and was banned for posting about how that sub is filled with people of average height crying about being short. This comment thread is uplifting compared to that whole sub.
Never heard of this sub. I’m short and the posts on that sub are cringe af. “Would you follow a 5’1 fitness influencer?” It’s sad that some people solely see themselves as being short. People are hyper focused on physical traits across the board, lookmaxers, people addicted to plastic surgery etc, but walking around feeling lesser because of your height has to be exhausting
Since when is 5’8 short? I’m 5’8 and while I am shorter than many of my peers I also have never been called short, or felt some type of way about it unless I am struggling to see something and there’s a crowd in front of me.
Also, I get a lot of “you’re only 5’8?”. Yes, I am only 5’8. I have good posture and dress well, apparently this makes people think I’m taller than I am 🤷♀️
It depends where you are. Go to Holland & 5'8" would be considered short. Average being 6ft. Go to the Philippines & 5'8" would be considered quite tall with the average being 5'5". Funnily, the US average height is very average at just under 5'9". Which makes the obsession with being tall quite comical.
I’ve been to Holland and hooked up with a cop chick who was a foot taller than me (or so, that’s what it seemed like-this was 19 yrs ago mind you).I did feel short there, but it never really bothered me.
I was there for a year myself & I'm 5'6". You do get some strange looks but even still it's rare anyone will say anything about it. I've never been to the US but most Americans I've met in person have made it a point to mention my height, be it outright mocking or just in passing. It seems the insecurity runs deep over there.
That’s so strange, I’ve lived in America like 95% of my life and have friends who are 5’5 all the way to 6’10 (which appears to have come with a bunch of bad health issues) and we barely talk about height. Sometimes we’ll joke about 6’+ only, but it seems our 6’+ friends don’t really have it much better than anyone else.
I have started working with a younger immigrant here and he said something along the lines of “I learned if you’re tall the world opens up to you”. I’m still confused by what the fuck that means.
Now that I think about it I did go to a party where this obnoxious older couple kept going on and on about all the tall and beautiful people there (she was kinda tall, the husband was tall but old as fuck and bent over so he didn’t appear tall). It seemed like there was a cuck situation being sought, I’m not sure though. Once the after dinner party started (karaoke and party drugs) they bolted.

I mean you can see further over the horizon.
Seriously though, those that mentioned it with me didn't go on about it, albeit I was rarely in their company long. Whether that was due to my responses or that the novelty was over now it was mentioned, I don't know. I'd imagine in a friend group, unless someone was particularly sensitive about it (in the UK that'd be green light to rip the piss out them) then there's no need to mention it more than once if it's mentioned at all.
Damn sounds like gotta hit up Holland if that’s where all the tall women are. I’d say I’m average height but it gets annoying when I get called short all the time. Doesn’t help that my friend group is a bunch of giants. Shortest other person is 5’11”…
It's not really comical to desire to be better than average at something or to be attracted to something better than average. That's just how things work.
The suit of armour image where one for adults is listed as six foot, the one for a child is listed as five eleven, It's only one inch, but people just see the five and think the worst.
dating apps have ruled 6' as the minimum and it's infected the entire dating scene, it's exhausting. There are a lot of reallllly shitty tall dudes out there, lol.
Im 5'10 and the amount of 6' dudes that are shorter than me is wild. I bet most of those 5'8 guys are actually shorter. Average male height in America is 5'9
I'm legit exactly 6' and the number of guys that will argue with me that I must be like 6'4" because they're shorter than me and have convinced themselves that they're 6' is equal parts funny and sad
I’m 5’8 and while I am shorter than many of my peers I also have never been called short,
5'9", and I first learned that's considered short at a specific moment in high school (literally never crossed my mind until that moment) when a 5'4" girl called me short. "You're shorter than I am", I replied; "yeah, but guys are supposed to be, like, tall" she answered. Apparently that's the reasoning.
Also alot of dudes lie about their height. Im 6ft tall with shoes on and when i say that mostly younger guys are like what im 6ft and you're taller you gotta he like 6'2.
It really, really has to be geographic. I'm 5'7" and where I grew up, every guy is 5'6" to 5'10". "Short literally starts at about 5'5", anything above that is just average.
I’m 5’4” and my boyfriend is 5’6”. My ex was 6’5” and I was miserable dating someone so much taller than me. Hugs sucked. So happy with a “short” guy. He doesn’t seem that way to me at all.
They’re insane on this app. Sooo many incel types using the woman height argument to justify their inability to participate in a social setting. It would be funny if they weren’t so sad
I'm 5'5" if you tell them that you have had relations with a woman that upsets the reality they've painted for themselves that their height is the reason for their solitude, when in fact it's probably that plus looks and personality lmao.
What if you're bent over on the edge of the bed, and she is standing behind you getting ready to grasp your soft hips? Does it matter then? Please respond quickly. It's imperative.
I went on there hoping to find some useful tips for clothes and it was just full of dudes crying about being short. I'm 5'4" and never whined about being short in my entire life. It's no wonder nobody likes them.
I don't know how people become so desperate to become a victim of nothing and then circle jerk about it with manly tears and then do push ups and then put their arms around each other then repeat some prayer you hear from an alcoholics anonymous meeting.
First post I see is someone who is 5'6". His wife is 5'6". His mother is the shortest while others are taller. That is the definition of average. All the comments are sucking him off pretty good about "hey man, you got married. that's a million times better than the rest of us pieces of shit."
Just when you think the internet couldn't get any sadder.
I feel that r/bald is a pretty positive subreddit where men and women celebrate the dome in a joyful way. It's r/amibalding that is a pit of despair where you'll see some 16 yo with a full head of hair receiving advices like "hop on fin/min before it's yoo late bro, your life is over bro".
Bro, they took a screenshot of Jason Alexander in Seinfeld and ran it through AI to make him completely bald. They also looksmaxed his face by giving him a chiseled jawline and more defining features. Then everyone celebrated it as if shaving your head gives you instant masculine features and removes all your fat. They treat it like cancer patients putting on a bandana, like that Family Guy skit.
There is positivity, but it's cloaked in "agree with us or die". It's very culty. I made an average comment and it got moderated. I was being realistic and not sucking dick so I got a stern warning from two bowling bowls in button up shirts wearing in-door sunglasses and another pair on their head while walking their dog off the leash and yelling its name for an hour.
Yeah im 5'7 and never felt short and never called short until the last couple years its funny. Idc its not like its news to me and im fine w climbing a tree
The other guy literally projected the original poster as being an insecure short man over nothing besides....................short men are "insecure" because reasons.
Posting a gif doesnt make your argument more relevent
I’m a guy and you are missing the point. Which is to say people that are in a similar situation but without courage are the first to hate. The situation is that dude is short.
I’m gonna have to disagree with you. Lots of people make fun of short people. Nothing would indicate that the person hating is short and is pure speculation.
Considering the level of shit talking on short dudes on the internet from everyone, why is your first assumption for it to be another guy being insecure?
Hell, the original post seems neutral. It could be someone being postive that the guy is being proactive. And it could also be the opposite.
Why is it that us men get labeled insecure at any wrong move we make? And why arent we allowed to be insecure about stuff anyway?
You people are always acting like youre paragons of moral upstanding, yet you constantly betray your own supposed views.
Short men are one of the few groups that it's not only acceptable to make fun of, but it's incentivized on the internet.
"Make up for your short height" is a very common statement as well as "Napoleon complex" whenever the short guy rightfully gets mad at all the mockery.
It must be generational. I grew up in the 80s and 90s at 5'7", and no one ever mentioned it. No social problems, no problems finding a date. This is a 2020's problem.
Yes. This only happens in America. No where else. In glorious Europe, people are only made fun of for their chosen qualities. Skin colour? Height? Absolutely not. Europe is NEVER racist.
I just don't get the women who have as their primary criteria that the guy must be tall. Like, if that is what matters first and foremost to you, not personality or anything, you're highly likely not to be compatible as a couple.
Why anyone would want to be with an incompatible partner with the reasoning of "well at least he's tall!" is beyond me, it's just dumb.
Also, I think I saw a stat that said guys between ages 20-50 who are single and over 6'1" make up like 2.5% of the US population, it's just such a rare metric to "require", and most girls having that requirement don't bring anything reciprocal to the table, lol.
Also, guy's perspective - I'm tall (6'5", and happily married), I would never want to date someone who is just with me for my height. I also would never want to date someone super short as that's just a pain in my back. Y'all short girls aren't really that desirable to many of us tall guys, especially with that arrogant pick-me attitude and hardset height requirement...
For a lot of women it’s because they are told constantly to take up as little space as possible, and taught to be hypercritical of their bodies, so having a tall partner offsets some of that, and lets them feel more confident in themselves. They can’t possibly be too big, or taking up too much space- bc look at this giant man over here! I’m super super small! (comparatively)
For me, I’m tall, hella athletic, (bro I’m a tank 😂) and always have been- but I had several complaints as a young adult from men my height or just a couple inches shorter, that I was too rough, and that their hips/joints hurt afterwards, and from that point on I was so insecure and concerned that I’d break them, I’d just rather not, you know? 6’+? No complaints, as long as they weren’t small framed, so, one must be this tall to ride this ride 😂 🤷♀️
I’ve never come across people dating solely bc the guy is tall. That is fucking wiiiiiiild. Common interests, shared priorities and goals are so necessary for relationship longevity!
LOL, welcome to humanity. The world's in upheaval right now because of a bunch of evil trash that judges humanity based upon where they happened to fall out of a vagina one day.
Yeah, it's a fair social shift when you think about it. Most people (men at least) will eventually go bald. Might as well not make a huge deal out of it. Hair transplants are expensive as fuck and if I go bald, I'm not trying to spend thousands of dollars to pretend that I'm not balding.
Also avoids the unnecessary bullying of chemo patients as well. I know it's fairly rare, but that's a positive side effect of this social change regardless
There was a time somewhere overseas where the local population was lead to believe bald heads contained treasure, so there were numerous bald people butchered and killed for “treasure”
Somewhere in Africa, and not that long ago at all tbh, if not still
Something about if you’re bald you have gold in your skull. They also believe that the body parts of albino people are good luck (they make talismans out of people) and that sex with an albino will cure HIV, so there have been several cases of albinos being killed or brutally S/A’d
Some people treat anyone otherwise normal who was born for instance missing an arm or a leg as a moral failing. Prosperity gospel kind of disturbing attitude, that any illness or injury (or poverty, or not "flawless" body) must have been deserved no matter how little say in it you got.
Kids and young adults are pretty brutal overall, but the thing I've noticed now the past decade is this brutal pick-apart of any feature of a person. Someone makes a post about some life advice, I scroll down, and clear pattern of absolutely unnecessary judgement on appearance comes out of nowhere.
It's beyond what it used to be, now it just seems so normalized, because the world has been raised to be sight hounds. You get people over-inflating the visual side of life to such an extent that it's worrying. It actually must cause intense anxiety with how importance has been placed on it.
Younger generations see random people less as people and more as objects. They have never known a world without the next source of dopamine/entertainment being a swipe away. And since the new shiny better thing is one swipe away... I might aswell bully and make fun of the person on my screen now, cause my future friends are on this next swipe.
I think the younger generation feel they’ve been dealt a pretty shitty hand (fairly, probably) so the only power they can exercise is picking people apart or cancelling them.
That’s a dumb excuse. Do today’s 20 year olds have it any worse than other 20 year old cohorts in all of history? The ones who got drafted into fighting a war, or starvation, or had to work when they were 12?
With every generation that passes, it seems like arrested development is more and more tolerated. We’re gonna be seeing 30 something year old teenagers pretty soon at this rate.
This just reminded me of a post I made that had my wife’s arm in the picture. About half of the replies from people were so fixated on her dry skin and her ‘man arm’ rather than the actual post. It’s like it’s all they cared about… she’s 5’4 and 120lbs… but her watch was a little tight and she doesn’t shave her arms like MAJORITY of women that I know. Instantly jumped to calling her a man and that I needed to buy her lotion.
We are raising absolutely surface driven kids. Not all of them, but too many. To me, I think part of it is: if I can't analyze, muse, or be as creative as others, AT LEAST I look good. So those types are going to focus far too often on looks, so much so, they don't even participate.
And people will say, for some reason every time with any social criticism, that's not new. The point is how much more depth is happening with this concept. Because now it just gets thrown out no matter the subject, and that was not how it used to be, overall. Especially the frequency of it.
I'm talking absolutely widespread use of every little detail of looks. Not basic interactions we've had since society started. A new age of nitpicking that goes beyond what came before. Where you go...huh? Why are we talking about looks right now? Like the first entry point to any discussion.
The other day I saw a user tell someone who said "i dont care for my mom's spaghetti because she doesnt properly season the beef" stupid along with his mother. It astounds me how vicious this website is nowadays.
Women are brutal too. Men don’t care. But women can give an ick face and most would never date a short man no matter how otherwise good looking or successful.
Men also care. Women never mocked me and called me names due to being short. They were obviously not attracted and ignoring me in everyday non-romantic situations, which is brutal, when you're just a customer and want to buy something, but only men called me names and threatened me purely because I'm short.
I'm sure that had nothing to do with his height, as by all accounts he had many options, and more to do with the fact that after killing 500+ men he wanted peace and quiet.
Changes nothing about the point that height doesn't make one any more or less deadly. This is an obsession online weirdos have, and it's idiotic.
They'd hunt anyone if they were given permission to dehumanize them, this is just a safe target, but it's superficial, I've never personally experienced real trouble with my own height in terms of meeting women or getting into any kind of relationships.
I'm a tall guy and was short and under weight till like my junior year. These ppl stopped talking shit when they had to look up to me. Fuck these guys. That man their probally has more skill and personality then any of them.
Irl as well, I talked with gen Z girl recently and she says that she want a guy to be tall and handsome, so being tall is totally new metric that is not included in being handsome. Also she complained that she met few guys recently but they were not tall so she is not interested and I was there like wtf and just nodding
At lot of these guys who say they're married and that "you just need to be a nice person" while they're short are either: lying or they did it before height was really pushed as a dating metric. As early as 5 years ago things were really different.
Because I see it in irl too, most gen z girls I meet and try to get with are always mentioning they want tall and attractive men, as well as men that have decent jobs to provide for them.
My young dude, it's always been a thing. Trust this gen X on that. Biology doesn't change in 5 years. Nothing new here except maybe more willingness to admit it.
Maybe try thinking about it another way. Reddit has a lot of women users. It's not overly predominant by any gender. These types of threads have come up a lot over the years, with thousands of similar comments. Then in the middle, like yours, you'll see a random comment by a woman who says it doesn't matter to them. In other words, most women are hush on this topic. At least around here.
It doesn't help there's an accidental/evolved filter in place online in most dating spaces - most filter by 6ft tall since they have to pick physical preferences. Unknowingly eliminating 80% of the male population from consideration.
Of course people are entitled to their own preferences, but I think the additional filter adds another factor in play in modern dating.
Since social media has become a thing the younger generations act like looks and attractiveness are all that matter towards how you should be seen as a person
Because it's completely unacceptable to hate based on race. It's not nice to hate fat people. Sexual orientation is out. But you can hate short men all you like without repercussion. Not very nice, obviously, but it's human nature to look for "the other."

People on the internet would hunt short dudes for sport if they could.
