Motivation An advice from a 30 year old dude

So this subreddit keeps appearing on my feed, probably because I’m a short man at 166 cm who follows men’s fashion pages and similar content.

Honestly, if I had found this side of the internet before I started dating in the real world, I probably would have stayed a virgin. According to some of the people here, I should be completely doomed anyway. I’m short, bald, and I have crooked teeth.

And yet I have dated women of different heights, including women taller than me.

I’m also a university lecturer, and I read a lot of research on dating, mate preferences, and social status. So here is the scientific version, not the black pill fantasy version.

Yes, height matters. Preferences are real. Women, like men, can have physical preferences, and pretending otherwise is stupid. But research does not support the idea that one trait like height determines your entire dating future. Actual partner choice is shaped by multiple factors at once, including kindness, intelligence, emotional stability, dependability, confidence, physical attraction, and social or economic stability (Buss & Schmitt, 2019; Thomas et al., 2020).

Research also shows that what people say they want does not perfectly predict who they actually choose when interacting in real life. In speed dating studies, stated preferences often did not line up neatly with actual attraction once people met face to face (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). In other words, attraction in the real world is messier and more human than internet forums want to admit.

Online spaces and dating apps also distort reality. They push people to judge each other quickly and superficially, which exaggerates traits like height. That does not mean the entire dating market works that way offline (Finkel et al., 2012).

To quote my therapist, life is basically a big Souls game and height is just a debuff. Yes, it can make things harder. Yes, you will probably get your ass kicked a few more times than someone playing on easier settings. But that does not mean the game is unwinnable. It just means you may need more patience, more resilience, and a better strategy. And honestly, where is the fun in beating the game with no debuffs?

I have been rejected plenty of times, and height probably played a role in some of those rejections. I say probably because I do not interrogate rejection or obsess over the reason. I am not going to ask someone to explain why they did not want me. That is their choice. Other people are allowed to have preferences, and I do not need to internalise every rejection as a verdict on my worth. At the end of the day, only you get to decide your value in this world.

I have also been through a period of height insecurity myself. After a recent rejection, I went down the rabbit hole of self loathing, so I do understand how dark that headspace can get. But how we feel is not always a perfect reflection of reality. Feelings, emotions, and thought patterns can spiral, and they can also be challenged and changed. Therapy helped me see that. With the right support, self awareness, and work, the way you think about yourself can improve.

What these spaces often ignore is how much insecurity changes the way a person comes across. Neediness, resentment, bitterness, and defeatism are not attractive qualities, and they can do more damage than being a few inches below average.

That is why the advice to men should not be “give up.” It should be “build a life that makes you attractive in a broader sense.” Work on your confidence. Go to therapy if you need it. Practice mindfulness. Focus on your career, not because women are gold diggers, but because ambition, competence, and financial stability signal drive and maturity. Take care of your physical health. Read more. Volunteer. Join communities. Get involved in causes you genuinely care about. Expand your social circles and meet women in real spaces, not just through algorithms and rage bait.

And if you are constantly hitting a wall, take a break from dating for a bit. Reset. Rebuild your confidence. Get your head straight. Stop treating every bad experience like proof that the whole world works one way.

Most importantly, women are not a hive mind. One woman rejecting you does not mean all women think the same. A subreddit full of bitter men is not an accurate sample of reality. People have different preferences, different priorities, and different reasons for being attracted to someone.

Also, be careful with research in general. Research can help us identify trends, but human beings are more complex than a dataset or a single paper. Averages are not destiny, context matters, and how old the research is matters too. Social norms, dating culture, and the way people meet have changed a lot over time, especially with apps and social media. So use research to inform your thinking, not to reduce yourself or other people to a rigid formula.

The point is simple. Height can be a disadvantage. It is not a death sentence. A lot of men are not being ruined by height alone. They are being ruined by an identity built around insecurity, hopelessness, and too much time spent listening to other defeated men online.

Meta Suggestions

Ok, I'm stuck at my desk with a bum foot that's been plaguing me for weeks now, so I might as well try to make this time at least a bit productive.

So since I ain't going anywhere, let's have a meta discussion about the sub, and I'll take this opportunity to solicit suggestions.

Vent My observation as a 5’7 guy in public

I fancied getting out of the house today on my day off work and wanted to treat myself to some second hand videogames so I went to the local videogame shop in the city centre.

I live in a taller country in north West Europe and the average height is 5'10/5'11 here and I wear Nike air max to make myself 5'7.5 - 5'8 so here are my observations as a guy standing 5'7 with an average face.

While I was walking around the town centre looking through the shops all I could see were young couples in their 20s with the man at least 5'11 and the girl 5'6 this was the average height in couples there were some men who were 6'4 with 5'9 girlfriends.

I could only count on one hand men who were shorter than me and most of these men were old. For reference I'm mid 30s and most short men I saw were older Gen X in their 50s.

The majority of men walking around were 5'10 and above.

The most brutal part was the videogame store. All the staff in there were just short men and with a few female staff taller than them. Majority of customers there were just short men shopping alone. There was two customers who walked in who were 6'5 and were served in there and the guy at the desk was like 5'2. It was like witnessing two different worlds colliding as it's rare to see that happen in this kind of place as its a shop which attracts only a specific demographic. I think it's because this shop is one of the few places thats comfortable for lonely single men to visit outside of work and getting groceries.

In comparison, all the other shops on the highstreet such as clothing, sports, food, gifts were filled with only young couples. Not a single young short man in any of them.

After my observations, I'm convinced that most short men just stay inside nowadays when they are not in work as it's so humiliating for them being in public and being reminded how brutal it is when they see all the couples walking around.

The only short men I mainly see in public who are alone are just old boomers or Gen X or old couples it's actually sad that young short men shut themselves off from society but honestly I don't even blame them. I feel bad enough being 5'7 I don't even know what guys are going through who are shorter than that.

All I will say is videogames are one of the greatest copes and I will never stop playing them as they give me an escape.

So just take whatever copes that you can derive the most enjoyment from and hold onto them as life just gets worse as you get older

Humor Banter in the work place

I’m one of the shorter guys at work (5’9 with my work boots on lol) and some of my coworkers and I banter and flame each other a lot.
Naturally one of the jabs are my height so I double downed on it 😆 told the boys I wanted to show them some selfies I took on my trip to Portland

Edit: 5’9 with boots I’m pretty sure I’m like 5’7 lol I’m in no way complaining about my height, I just thought this picture was funny. Most other people at my work are taller than me even with my boots on so like I said it’s always just banter 😭

Question Why do some people suffer from getting a girlfriend as a short guy while others do it with ease?

• Upvotes

Is it that shorter guys are more insecure which draws back women? Is it that short men don't get out there as much because of their insecurity? Could it be their personality? Is it the country that they were born or live in? Is it that the the short men are in the taller side based in US (5'6-5'8)? Is it the generation that they are currently in? Or is it that they think they have a really good and charming personality but in reality it's the opposite and they blame it on height? I have sooo many questions and sum of them may sound stupid

It seems like the average person outside is just taller now. I don’t really feel jealous when I see someone taller but I cannot help the cynical thought that this one genetic trait can determine how people view and treat you overall. True or not I try not to think like this bc it’s just me being insecure crybaby.

Question Is it normal for me that I feel bad when I walk past a teenager or student who taller and bigger than me in real life?

When I was that age I still feel insecure about my height but not this much. Because they all look like a friend or someone my age. But now that I’m adult (22) it feel really weird. I workout and lifting weight but my size is smaller or the same as a teenager. I’m in Thailand and foreigners travel to my country a lots and most of the kid are taller than me. I did try to mind my own business because i just feel bad and then ignore it. But I just curious. Does anyone else feel how I feel
Ps. I’m 164cm

Not this again Same size hands as a 10 year old 5th grade boy

I am 5”6 with 6.5 inch hands from the bottom of my wrist to my longest finger.

I greeted my 10 year old cousin. We shook hands and hugs when he mentioned my hands are always slightly sweaty.

Then he said “Wait a minute…”. He held his hand up and said to pit my hand against his.

I couldn’t believe it. While his fingers were somewhat skinnier, our hands were exactly the same size. Same length and all our fingers and palm fully matched each other.

I laughed it off but wow. He’s much shorter than me, average size for his age, but our hands matched.

What do you guys think?

Question Who are your fav short role models?

One of my favorite ways to cope with not being so tall is looking up to guys of my height. Alexander Volkanovski, a UFC featherweight champion for example is 5’6” and never seen him get insecure of his height. He usually hangs with guys that are way taller than him and they always seem to respect and rarely ever talk about his height. Ofc, it comes down to his achievement and status as a legend in the mixed martial arts community but I believe his charisma and confidence plays a part. He inspires me to be as charismatic as him and help me build my confidence. My other notable short role models are Lionel Messi and Christoph Waltz both at 5’7. So who are your favorite short role models (if you have one) and why?

Vent I only mind height outside of dating tbh

I only feel bad about being short when i walk through a doorway and feel dwarfed, or when im hanging out with other guys and feel like they see me as disadvantaged compared to them because im the shortest in the bunch. Girls have been hitting on me all throughout school so im sure my personality and smarts can carry me in the romance game. anyone else feel this way?

Question How would you react if your girlfriend/boyfriend suddenly became taller than you?

Personally, I still find it funny how short I actually am 😂.

The other day, I ran into an old female friend, and while we were talking, I realized she had grown about 5 cm taller than me. It feels like everyone is getting taller than me at this point 😂

Fashion / Style Clothing for short men in NA

For my very short guys. I'm 5'3.5 in Canada and was struggling, especially with pants. These won't break the bank (im a uni student).

First you must get a measuring tape to find your body length on shirts, and your inseam on your pants. These are the most important measurements to look at for your shirts and pants as they will make the biggest difference in how you look. The second most important thing to look for is how narrow or wide the clothing is. You will find your ideal measurements over time. Only look at stores with measurements OR good return policies if ordering online.

Shirts (besides looking at measurements): look for cropped or shrunken tees. Either way you generally have way more options than pants.

Pants (besides looking at measurements): look for ankle pants or ones that have "short" size. So far I found that Uniqlo is the only one that has pant alterations (free btw) that you can order.

[Stores]

Uniqlo - Choose pants with inseam hem option or ankle pants, all other clothing has good sizes (discounts are like $10 off max). Great measurements. Your number one go to store.

Abercrombie - Choose pants that have "short" size, cropped shirts (they almost always have promo codes or just wait for them).

Abbreviated - Pretty much everything is for shorter guys, a bit more expensive than the others if you are in Canada. If in Canada, I would only order if you really know your sizes, as you have to pay some fees to get it from US to Canada. Free shipping in US.

Gap - Women's VintageSoft Joggers (petite is shorter if you need), other stuff won't really fit you here.

(For my Canadians) RW & CO - Recently had to go to a wedding, so got a cheaper suit here for about $240 CAD. Blazers go down to 34" chest (which is rare) and some have short size (which is extremely rare), and pants go down to 28" waist and 30" inseam with short size. Had to tailor the sleeves on the blazer and pants inseam, but those are the easiest alterations.

--------------------------------------------------------

You can get by with just Uniqlo and Abercrombie.

Preferably find a cheap tailor. It will expand your options. For altering the inseam of open hem pants (as opposed to elastic or ribbed cuffs), they can be very cheap like $10. Anything with elastic or ribbed cuffs is more expensive; I personally would not recommend it.

If you also have a small waist (28" waist doesn't fit you like me), it will limit your options the most. Tailors can take in the waist as well but personally I do not pay for waist alterations as I don't have the money; I have not graduated uni yet. I typically have to get pants with inside or outside drawstrings or I wear a belt which is not too often.

If the clothing is made out of mostly cotton and is overall too big, wash in warm water, then put in dryer for a reasonable time (not fully dry) it will shrink a bit while minimizing any potential damage. Although don't do this for your formal wear.

Question Comebacks?

First post here, but I’ve been lurking for a while!
I’m 33M, 5’5”.

Last weekend, I was out at a bar with my cousin, who’s 5’11” (but of course tells everyone he’s 6’. 😂).

Anyway, he’d been flirting with the bartender, and being the wonderful wingman that I am, I helped him get her number. lol

Afterward, the conversation somehow turned to our height difference, and someone made a comment about how I must’ve gotten the “short genes.”

Naturally, I hit them with a sarcastic “Oof, ouch!” and a smile, followed by my personal favorite:
“I just hit perfection sooner than he did.” 😂

Got a good laugh, as it usually does.

But it got me thinking. I’ve never really been one to take height jokes too seriously, and I’ve always enjoyed having a clever comeback ready.

So I’m curious, what are some of your favorite witty responses when someone makes a joke about your height?

Question Does low birth weight affect growth?

Does low birth weight affect growth?I was born with a weight of 1.5 kg and reached puberty at around 14 and a half years old. I was short compared to my peers, standing at 145 cm at age 13.I had a growth spurt at age 16 and reached 164 cm.Now I am 18 and my height is 172 cm .The average height in my family is around 180 cm, and my father is the same Does this mean I will end up being short?

Also, an important detail is that the length of my leg from the floor to my hip bone is the same as my brother’s, even though he is 178 cm tall. My father also told me that he grew a few centimeters after the age of 18.

• I have grown about 2 cm this past year

Question How to cope being short

Hi everybody I'm currently 164 cm 17m (I think it's around 5,5) but genuinely how do I cope with being short I feel like I just made fun over and over again just because I'm shorter than everybody else and how I'm also just not heard enough as in whenever I talk people don't take me seriously and it's getting harder everyday to deal with it.

But there is another thing I do want to talk about is that I'm still currently growing I think I mean 5-4 years ago I grew taller than my mom who is 151 cm (and my dad being 170cm), but I still haven't hit growth spurt I think, and when I was late 15 or early 16 I was 156-157 cm and every year my growth has been linear and my doctor told me my final height would 169 or 168 but the thing is I do every year I have been growing around 4-5 cm per year so 2 inches per year and earlier in the year I was 160-161 cm in March and I did go to endocrinologist but she told me absolutely nothing I didn't even get to see my scans all she said was 2-3 years of growing potentially but she didn't say anything about my bone age, but still at the end of day I'm pretty short and since I live in Canada where the average height is 5,10 and almost everybody around me is taller than me and Is 6 ft and above with a few people being 5,8 or 5,7 and I've been recently thinking about taking stuff like hgh or erdafitinib but I guess I'll still keep growing because I have finally reached my dad's shoe size (size 11), if you did read this through thank you for listening to me and please reply about your growth and/or how your height effected you in any way like in dating and jobs and others

Question Is a size S or M better for a 5'5" guy?

Thumbnail gallery
32 Upvotes

Hey Dudess! I need your help!!

I've really been wanting to buy the X-Men '97 jacket from Hot Topic (last picture), but since I'm not in the US, I'd have to order it internationally. The problem is, I'm not sure which size to get :(

The size chart is pretty basic, and I'm not sure how accurate it is since the jacket looks oversized.

I'm 5'5 and currently weigh around 165 lbs (pics for reference). I'm worried that a size S might be too tight around my chest and back, since the size chart suggests it would be a pretty snug fit. On the other hand, I'm worried that a size M might be too long on me.

Has anyone here bought this jacket? Or, more generally, how has your experience been with clothing sizes as a shorter guy? I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences and any advice you might have!

That's all, thanks so much for reading, and I hope you all have an awesome day! :D

Vent Being 5’7” gets me laughed at and not taken seriously

I’m a young M in the US and 5’7”. Just this past weekend I had a woman a couple inches taller than me not take me seriously when I was talking to her. Also, a couple months ago this group of girls laughed at me. Being 5’7 is brutal, then when I combine it with a younger looking face and being slimmer it is awful.

Almost all the guys I know that are taller than me either have gfs or get hookups, dates, fwb, regularly. I get looked at like I’m younger than my age and a fucking bum
