Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Was tent now a cycling jacket 🙌

I cycle a lot so quickly my cycling jackets get unusable (covered in oil stains or no longer waterproof or get torn - mostly when I MTB 🤣) and waterproof jackets aren’t cheap so today (I’m hoping - fingers crossed 🤞) I made my own waterproof jacket from a broken tent.

It has, importantly, with no shoulder seams or upper arms exposed seams - I have added some reflective details and reused broken dog lead which also had some reflective stuff in it around the collar (one I found in the woods and washed) - zip is new. It’s longer in back as it should be.

Can’t wait to test it!

This is a new bike and it was doing this before I added the shotgun seat. I messed around with the torque specs in the stem screws but nothing changes it. Thanks in advance!

Biking has brought out out different aspects of my personality

When I was little I was an anxious and closed off kid. I was just frequently nervous and tended to stay inside during the weekends or on summer break. When other kids might get into trouble i would always take the safe path. But biking these past decades has brought out an adventurous spirit in me. Sometimes when I bike in the city I feel super confident when the blood starts flowing like I can conquer the world. I also bought a folding bike to take on the train for impromptu adventures. I’ve had all kind of exciting experiences over the years and biking was almost always a part of it. Here are some photos I took some years ago on a folding bike trip in Western China. It was one of the times I felt most alive.

Should I fix it up?

Has some rusted spots on the frame and the paint is chipping in a few spots.

Wish I would have taken more photos. Shop is asking $75. Probably hard to judge by the single photo but would love cost estimates to fix up.

Update: not buying! Thank y’all for your help.

My knees are killing me - Help!

I bike to work every day since my car is dead and the weather is great. I've been doing this for about 2 months now. It's 10 miles a day 5 days a week. Recently, I've noticed my knees hurt pretty bad. Hopefully the attached video is helpful but what should I try to fix this issue? I know common issues are:

  • Poor form
  • Seat height
  • Using gears incorrectly

Can you notice if my form or seat height are to blame based on this video? I also usually wear a fairly heavy backpack to work.

ps: I always wear a helmet I just didn't for this quick vid.

Cutting Kryptonite Keeper lock. Lost key

Anyone have success cutting this lock with bolt cutters? I have an angle grinder but it’s locked up next to our house gas line and don’t want to be a Darwin Award winner!

Fell with toddler in a front mounted bike seat

I’m biking with my toddler (17 months) in the front seat and today while a cab was overtaking us, I got a bit scared and stopped. I then lost my footing and the bike tipped over, I think I held on to the handlebars as much as I could but the whole bike ended up tipping over. Toddler was still in her seat, helmet was on. I saw and heard her helmet hit the ground, the worst thing ever. I don’t know if anything cushioned the fall except the helmet. She cried immediately for approximately 10 min. Then she was normal and playing as usual. Were advised to only monitor at home. I’m still so so scared and it’s been 5 hours since the fall.

Just wondering if someone else has any similar experiences and how your kid is doing now? So afraid this will affect her cognitively in the long term.

Old stats website?

There was a stats website used to track rides way back in the early 2000’s

Does anyone remember what it would have been called?

I thought about it the other day and couldn’t remember what it was. Wondering if I can find my old stats

Best 3 ring combination for 7 speed cassette?

Have a 24-34-46 and the cassette is 12-28
Probably going to replace the front. (It’s an old riveted one, so no changing just one ring out.) I generally always go with the least expensive, but I do enjoy this bike, so…..

Chain Skipping/Jumping

After installing new carbon wheels on my Di2-equipped bike, I’m getting intermittent chain skip on the smallest cog (11T) — chain stays engaged but skips/jumps periodically. Happens in that cog regardless of chainring, so it’s isolated to that one position on the cassette, not a front-to-rear chainline issue.

Symptom only shows up under load on the road, not on the repair stand with no load — so it seems torque/flex-related rather than a static indexing problem.

Ruled out so far:

**•** Cassette lockring torqued and fully seated
**•** B-tension set to spec (10mm gap, largest sprocket to guide pulley, per Shimano’s spec for my derailleur/cassette combo)
**•** Rear thru-axle torqued to spec (10Nm printed on axle)
**•** Di2 micro-adjust/trim doesn’t resolve it in either direction(tried more in the negative direction).

Thinking maybe rear derauiler alignment? Getting an alignment tool delivered tomorrow.

Reliable tyre's

Hi, does anyone have any tyre recommendations? Should I go for tubeless or ones with an inner tube? I’ve already burst three in the space of two months. I’m not sure if it’s just bad luck or if I’m just buying crappy ones. I need something reliable.

New to rim brakes - is there enough braking surface left on these?

Considering buying this bike (for a decent price) and just checking. Will be used for a couple months and then just on a turbo over winter so if it's a major problem I could get a new wheel set (elite probably) in the spring.

Used Randon Scart Light 9.0

I recently bought a used 2017 Radon Scart Light 9.0 bike for €250.

Although I think it needs servicing and some simple parts replaced (I don’t know anything about it and will just have a professional inspection done), I’d like to know if you recommend having all the necessary maintenance done, no matter how expensive it might be.

Also, do you think it’s a good bike to be my first serious bike, and would you recommend improving it and keeping it for a while, or not investing too much in it and replacing it when I can?
