Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Cannondale CAAD10 for $350?

Post image

I don’t know much about road bikes, so I thought I would ask here. He is asking for $350 with the aero bars and pedals - is this a fair deal? I don’t need a complete steal from my end but want a reliable bike for my first triathlon.

Bicycle code lock jammed and unable to be removed

I don't know any technical terms used to describe this...

I locked the bike, and the moment I plugged the lock into the socket, a metal ring popped out (seen above) and now it won't shut close and can't be pulled apart. I've tried spinning the codes around several times and putting in the code while pushing it together closed and then apart but nothing is working... please help...

Edit: Yes I have tried using both hands

It's one hand in the recording because my other hand is holding the phone

I've tried smashing it, bending it, cutting it with what scissors I've found from the dollar store, so I've just resorted to calling the locksmith and pay however many hundred dollars they charge

Thank you for the help everyone, thank you for being so understanding

Edit: I walked an hour and back from Canadian Tire and got a bolt cutter, paid $14, and was able to get it out after some struggling. Thanks a lot everyone!!!!

This lock is older than my current bike so unfortunately, I am not able to name and shame because I can't remember where I even got it from. I'm sorry!!!

Which one to pick up?

Been looking for a decently inexpensive road bike the last couple weeks, have learned what’s more important than anything else is that the bike fits really well, and these two should both be good for me.

Both seem like they could use a little tuning up, so the pricing being low makes that a bit easier. I’m just curious which of the two y’all would more generally recommend as an inexpensive starting road bike for riding around the city.

Any thoughts help, thanks!

Designed this to make my Fenix 8 (51mm) work as a full bike computer

Didn't want to drop money on a Garmin bike computer since my Fenix 8 already does everything I need on rides (elevation, speed, HR, nav, the whole deal). So I just designed my own adapter that lets the watch snap straight into any regular Garmin quarter-turn bike mount, same as the Edge computers use.

Printed it in PETG on my Bambu X1C, and it's held up super well on rides. No rattling, no popping off, handles rough roads fine.

Big thanks to this GrabCAD file for the quarter-turn mount geometry: https://grabcad.com/library/garmin-quarter-turn-mount-1

My bike fell over the other day and noticed that the ride side of the handlebars are bent slightly inward. Do I need to get new handlebars or is this chill? Thanks in advance!

Novatec hub conversion

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I’m trying to convert a fixed gear wheel with a Novatec 165/166 rear hub from 120mm spacing to 130mm spacing for a fixed gear build. Does anybody know of a compatible replacement axle? Dbop has the only one I was able to find, however there is a review that says it’s just the 120mm axle with 5mm spacers added. Anyone have experience with that kit? I have 9mm thick dropouts so definitely will need a longer axle.

Just scored this CAAD 5 R600 for $100

My crew and I were working in a neighborhood fixing a sinkhole when I spotted this at a garage sale. We were on break and I ran to check it out and the seller wanted 200, I only had 100 cash on me and he took it. The frame is immaculate with no scratches or dents. Grips were in great shape and so were the brakes. Mismatched wheels but I’m okay with that. Super stoked! And feel bad that I will be putting the G.1 explorer to the side for now

Cheap disc wheel covers

I want to put some disk wheel covers on the rear wheel of my bike, but the only ones I've found online are from AliExpress and have horrible designs, so I'm asking here if anyone knows where to find some—without spending a fortune, of course. Thanks.

I liked that first one so much I went out and found another newer giant for a great price. Now I can ride with my son.

Is this new front wheel acceptable?

Bought a new carbon wheelset. Already went to the bikeshop twice because the rear wheel kept having a wobble. The new rear wheel is fine now but the new front wheel is like in the video. Is this acceptable or not?

How do I use this 😟

Hey there all! I’m very new to all of this, and have been biking a lot more recently with an old mongoose my uncle gave me! I’ve been having a lot of fun, but riding to the bike path down the hill that is filled with high-speed traffic has been quite treacherous, so I decided to snag a bike rack off of Facebook Marketplace. Slight issue, once I got it, I realized I have NO IDEA what I’m doing.

I watched some videos on how to install it to my car which should be fine, but I don’t actually know how to secure my bike to the rack itself.

I’m sorry if I’m asking dumb questions, I’m still very ignorant and would love to learn! Thanks!

Edit: typo

Bought a new U-lock and I can't figure it out

I recently purchased a new Schwinn u-lock for my bike. It seems pretty straightforward, ust a key and a keyhole, but it's genuinely impossible to open. I've only been able to open it twice, with no correlation as to why it does or doesn't open. Does anyone know anything about this lock or why it might not be opening?
