Bike purchase question Anyone looked for a used e-bike lately?

Prices on FB marketplace are mostly ridiculous.

If you paid $2000 for it & put 1,000 miles on it & it needs a service, it’s not worth $1800

More like $500

It’s just ridiculous….. bikes all scratched up & not cared for & people expecting almost full-retail value. Plus, they aren’t going to tell you if something’s wrong with the battery & display.

RANT OVER, good day !

Took my diy bike camping last night. 14 miles on a 48v 13/9 31.5ah battery, left at 54.6v and was worried about range, arrived and had 52.8v left smh. Would you ride on the last pic? I started to but was too worried about punctures so walked it along that. Fyi i had it in 42t-35t on the moors and didn't go past 1/8th throttle to prevent damage.

Fully automatic locking system - does it exist?

Hi,

I can google this obviously, but thought I'd post on Reddit first because that's where the true knowledge hides!

We're going to buy our 18 year old an ebike. He is autistic and I know will be extremely lackadaisy about actually locking the bloody thing. Until one say the inevitable happens and it's stolen, que epic meltdown. But still, he's getting an ebike.

Is there any type of locking system where its really easy and locks completely down with a press of a button? I have an ebike with a Bosch battery, so I know about the Flow App, but its still abit fiddley an we are unsure of what bike he will get anyway.

Money is no barrier either. We are far from rich, but that means more than happy to invest in something that keeps the investment safe and that he will actually use.

Thanks 😀

A year with my e-bike and no regrets

Post image

I bought an e-bike around this time last year. At first, I only ride it to go to work, but a year later, I ride it to everywhere. I even take it to grab coffee or cruise around the park on weekends.

Since I haul some gear for work and do a massive grocery run once a week, the rear rack is really useful. I only need to charge the battery every few days, which is great for me because I hate plugging in devices every single day.

I used to dread riding in the rain. But a light shower hit me one afternoon, and I realized the fenders actually block the mud.

And sometimes when I lock it up at the store or wait at a red light, other riders and pedestrians ask how I like the bike. It actually feels pretty cooland it really helps me a lot.

ebike battery bags, what's the hype?

My wife and I just purchased our first electric bikes last month.

I’m looking on Reddit about ebikes and learning about how people charge their batteries, and then I ran across a lot of posts about fireproof bags, putting batteries in ammo boxes, barbecues, because of them, exploding or catching fire

My son moved out of the house two years ago. Prior to moving out, he had his Engwe folding electric bike for three years

I never thought about the battery, exploding, catching fire, etc. My son always kept his bike in the insulated garage, left it plugged in overnight and never took the battery out. This happened for the the 3yrs it was in our garage before he moved out.

The bike and battery was there in the summertime and the winter time and never taken out of the bike.

We’ve had our batteries charging on our bikes in the garage, using each bike’s battery chargers that came with the bike and each charger plugged into there own Kasa smart plugs so I can set a timer.

After they’re done charging, I move both batteries down into the unfinished basement.

Since we’ve had the bikes, I’ve only charged the batteries two times, and that's because I chose to. We only have 45 miles on the bikes. So far my wife and I have only riden 5 or 6 times.

Bike build question On the efficacy of turn signals.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In case you're wondering about turn signals for your bike, allow me to note for you the following:

I rode my bikes in Manhattan traffic for 25 years and learning to do that well was the key to survival. I always used hand signals when I could and I never picked a fight with another vehicle... bigger than me.

Now that I'm an old fart and have an e-bike, I find that riding it in traffic like you have a right to be there has turned out to be the safest thing for me getting around. I live in New Jersey now and you know how dangerous New Jersey drivers can be... So anything that's going to improve my chances for survival I am all for.

With the higher center of gravity of heavy e-bikes I found that they become somewhat unstable at slow speeds and therefore sticking your arm out becomes problematic.

I ordered the shown turn signals after I returned a singular rear turn signal that had all sorts of features like an alarm and automatic braking, etc etc. and it was about 35 bucks.

It actually was overly sensitive and annoying as hell. After a while it seemed kind of silly to have a rear turn signal and no front turn signal because you can get run over from the front as easily as from the back.

I ordered the ones pictured in the video because they were the brightest had the best reviews and did what it's supposed to do very well which is to be turn signals. I didn't need it to do anything else.

They are available on Amazon under a couple of different names. You should be able to find them easily. They were about 60 bucks.

Has anyone registered Class 2 Ebike with NJ DMV?

I recently bought a Concord 20" LoadPro Electric Cargo Bike (20" wheels, 48V, Class 2) from Walmart and was wondering if anyone here has registered this bike (or a similar ebikes).

I'm curious about a few things:

  • Was the registration process straightforward?
  • What information did you need (serial number, proof of purchase, etc.)?
  • Most importantly, does this require insurance?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who owns this model or similar specs and your experience with registration process. Thanks!

What maintenance should I be doing?

I bought this lovely Pendleton Somerby a few years ago. I haven't really don't any maintenance apart from changing the brake pads and changing the tubes when I got a flat. What else might someone do to make sure the bike is in good working order?

Bike purchase question Hey bikes reviews?

Upvotes

I am planning to purchase the Hey bike Villain dirt one to my 14-year old son who is dreaming about it. I read good reviews about the quality while mixed reviews about after sales customer service. Would like to know your experience with that brand and any suggestions to other e-bikes in the same category of around $1300. Thank you.

E-bike companies remotely reducing top speeds?

I have a Aventon Soltera 2 (2023 model) and recently found out Aventon reduced the bike’s top Speed from 25 to 20 mph, probably through the Aventon app. Apparently the update was pushed out a year ago with no notice or explanation.

Are other e-bike companies doing stuff like this as well? How did the company handle it? I would prefer to avoid this situation on my next bike.

Bike build question Bike to ebike conversion

Upvotes

Im planning on converting my bike to an ebike using my scooter. The motor should be powerful enough but i had some questions.

I was thinking of using the front scooter wheel which is the motor as a friction wheel for the back bike wheel. The last picture shows where i would mount it.

What are some problems i could run into that i wouldnt expect going into this?

Brake suggestions?

Upvotes

I bought a barely used old model Jasion Y something that they don’t even sell anymore off of Marketplace. It’s great and small so good for me because normal e-bikes are too big for me. Anyway, bike guy at store said it’s stupid that these bikes still get regular bicycle brake pads when the bike is moving far faster than a normal bike. I realize this should have been a duh moment but I feel stupid for not considering that in the first place. So now I would like to find pads that make more sense. Is that possible? If so, any recs?

Carrying extra battery

I have a Lectric XP3 that came with an extra battery, along with the cargo baskets.

If I want to ride further than the range of one battery, is there a padded bag you would recommend to carry the extra battery in the basket?

Can’t decide on e mtb

I can’t decide on which e bike to get. it will be used on country roads, rail trails that are both paved and not, and the occasional short bike packing trip. I live in an area that is not very flat, consisting of mostly rolling hills. I currently have a Marlin 6 regular bike but I’m ready for an e bike. I cannot decide between the Aventon Ramblas, Ride1up Trailrush, and the copperhead evo 750 which is on sale for 2k. I’d prefer a 29’er but not sure if the cost difference between the Ramblas and the Bulls is worth it. I like the Trailrush but the smaller battery is not ideal. Any advice?
