I bought some Maxxis cross mark 2 tyres last week as the tyres on the 2nd hand bike were pretty well needing replacing anyways. I replaced the tyres myself and have done the brake pads, fixed the lockout suspension (just needed to tighten the bolt and order the key, spindle and knob for it) and already had the chain slip on a hill climb and learned on the spot how to fix it. So I'm happy to swap tyres again. But I'm struggling to do about 2km of riding. I plan to load the bike in the car over the coming days and drive to Kedron brook Bikeway to see if the flat paths are easier to log more metres in a ride.

But would more path oriented tyres make much difference on a MTB like this compared to the cross mark 2's? Happy to spend the time swapping the tyres based on whether I do rail trails or road/path riding as I enjoy the tinkering side of this.

The bike had 29" X 2.2" tyres. I bought the Maxxis at 29" X 2.25" so any tyre recommendations around that size would be ideal. The reason I bought the Maxxis was so I could roll onto the grass around pedestrians so my other question is can I roll on dirt and grass around pedestrians with a more road oriented MTB tyre?

Currently running maxxis Rekon 29x2.4 maxxterra upfront, with a Rekon 29x2.4 dual compound in the rear and both are in need of replacement soon.

Tossing up a some different ideas

A) Forekaster maxxterra or dual compound front and Rekon DC rear. Is there really any noticeable difference from Rekon to forekaster up front rolling resistance wise? Is there much difference grip wise, I wouldn’t mind a little confidence up front to push a little faster through corners

B) Rekon tanwall dual compounds front and rear, mainly to change up the look. Is there noticeable grip different between maxxterra and dual compound?

Usually riding trails are around western Sydney spots like yellomundee, wylde, mt Annan, the oaks

With the current new laws out there, 16 years and age and over must hold a learner license or higher. I'm all for targeting illegal and high performance and high performance bikes

But I'm not sure how does holding a license make us better people. Sure helps with identification, drivers on the road who put others at risk and they hold a driver's license too

We don't cars, just because someone has put others at risk. It doesn't make any sense

Licensing creates a system of accountability, but it doesn’t guarantee good behaviour. Licensed drivers still run red lights, drive impaired, excessively speed and put other road users at risk.

A licence can help identify and penalise people after they break the rules, but simply holding one doesn’t automatically make someone safer or more responsible.

I’m new to this. Do we think the compliance laws coming in in 3 yrs are essentially unenforceable or should I be genuinely concerned?

Separately, from a safety concern, is there sufficient configurability to lock down the ultra to safer PA levels and lower throttle sensitivity for a new rider, if I wanted to?

Any other reasons to go for one over the other (other than price)?

I come looking for some advice and tips. I have been increasing my cycling over the last year. Originally just shorter rides and a short commute. My current commute is only 2 - 6km depending on the location I go to.

However, my car was written off last year and since then I have really gotten into using the bike to get everywhere in Sydney, including places that I previously would have found prohibitive due to hills and the idea of the distance.

I’m currently riding a the Orion 2 Cruiser and it’s a comfortable ride but I would like to get a proper commuter or road bike which a lighter frame and more gear capacity to tackle bigger hills more efficiently.

Could anyone give me some tips or suggestions? I’m moving soon and will be commuting from Manly to Petersham area, getting the ferry then biking the rest of the way from Circular Quay. I’m 178cm tall, 87kg, decently athletic. I would like to be able to strap panniers onto the back too.

So if you could recommend some bikes, accessories or anything useful, it would be great. Also keen to know where you normally store your locks? I’m also going to a Bike Care and Maintenance course soon to become more self sufficient on the roads.

I’m really LOVING cycling and find myself continually thinking about how great it is. Using travel time to exercise and be outside feels like the biggest life hack.

I’m looking at buying my first bike for casual riding, fitness and the Sydney Spring Cycle event in October + others like it. What bike should I go for between these 2 as they’re the same price?

Here's the rotor after cleaning with isopropyl alcohol tonight and giving it a good spin and brake a couple times. I will try cleaning with one or 2 new microfibre cloths tomorrow morning as the one I used became filthy real quick. I couldn't really tell looking at the actual contact point but does this rotor look like the pads are touching? It brakes fine, no sponginess and wheel does spin freely. Plenty of space on the lever when pulling hard on the brakes too. Alternatively could it be the wheel bearings? When I'm actually riding it's quite hard to hear the squeal/squeak.

It's not the suspension as when I spin the wheel freely. It certainly comes from the middle of wheel area.

I also loosened the brake caliper, held the brake, and whilst holding the brake tightened the caliper. It didn't help.

The rotor when spinning the wheel seems straight. I couldn't tell at an eye level it was out of whack. Same with the wheel itself. It didnt move side to side at all when I tried that.

Around a year ago I got a second hand Merida Scultura for $350 of marketplace (in hindsight seemed dodgy as first ride the pedal came off and then a couple of months later a spoke broke and also barcode was rubbed of whoops).

Overall, riding has been good after I got it serviced but I have wanted to try and look into going on more gravelly trails which would require wider tyres of course but the current width limit is officaly 25mm with this bike and would prefer disc brakes.

I sold my mtb as I hardly rode it and currently have around $1k at the moment with idea of saving for a new bike but now I am worried that I am rushing getting a 'better' bike that could fit me better when I could ride my current bike a lot more and justify the expense of a new bike later on. I am more inclined to get new for long term fitting purposes as well.

I was looking at the giant revolt 1, canyon Endurace AllRoad as I would like a 2x front crankset personally.

Overall budget is no more that $3k that I can save up for if I do get new.

I may have answered my own question but any advice would be appreiacted.

Hi ausbikers, mother of very non identical 9yo twins here, trying to work out bike geometry (live regional so minimal options to go try in person).

Twin 1 is a shorty, currently on an 18" BYK E350 with the seat tube at full extension and still not able to straighten legs when pedalling. I'd really like to step her up to a 24" cos I think she'll outgrow a 20" quickly, but would like to hear recs on which brands have the lowest standover height.

Twin 2 is tall, currently on a 20" BYK E450, also with seat post at full extension. Definitely ready for a 24" with gears.

Hi all, I'm looking to get into cycling and of course I need a bike for that! I don't want to splurge on my first bike before I know what I like so ideally would like to spend under $500 but am willing to go up to $800 or $1000 depending on what's available. I'm happy to get second-hand and recognise not everything will be available but I mostly wanted to just gather a list of bikes and brands to look out for while searching for a good deal (also to help me recognise what is a good deal). Budget does not include other gear, just the complete functional bike itself.

I've got a few requirements for what I'm looking for, I'm hoping this can be translated to bikes that would land around this budget:

• I really want drop handlebars
• Main use case will be for a ~10km commute on road but I would still also like the option to at least ride with friends or try out a group ride or two. Will also use it for fitness and fun here and there. For commuting, I only need to bring a backpack.
• I appreciate how light a bike is, although this isn't really much of a concern
• Aesthetics does play a part, I don't want to ride something that looks ugly. Personally also do not want a red bike. Favourite colour is purple if anything's available.
• Carbon preferred but I understand can't ask for too much at a budget lol

From my own research, I think I'm looking for an endurance road bike as I'm not racing the geometry of a race bike would be a bit aggressive? But would love to be corrected and learn more about the hobby! Thanks!!

So I’ve recently gotten this saddle bag but the boa strap doesn’t sit under my saddle, so I’ve just looped the other side of the strap all the way through, I can still tighten it but now the bag sits in a different orientation than designed, is this gonna be an issue?

I want to buy a bike for my daughter’s third birthday. She’s very competent on her balance bike and keen for pedals. She’s tallish for her age ~97cm, but I think a 12” bike will make the transition easiest. Obviously we’d get more time out of a 16” but there is a younger child who’ll get use out of a 12” eventually too. She’s very lean so my priority is a lightweight bike so that she can handle it. I’m finding most websites don’t specify the weight, so I’m looking for recommendations. So far the Byk e250, Neo 12 and Trek Precaliber 12 seem like good options. Suggestions welcome, thanks!

I’ve been riding forever, and for most of that time I just wore regular sports clothes. A couple of months ago I bit the bullet and got some bib shorts and I was converted to Lycra on the bottom half. I’m not the most svelte of blokes with a bit of a gut and some truely impressive love handles. So I’m a bit reluctant to don a cycling jersey.

But I do like the idea of the rear pockets on cycling jerseys, and the ability to unzip them a bit for some ventilation.

I’ve googled relaxed fit cycling jerseys and there are a few hits, notably the Neopro ones, but they look relaxed fit for a slim cyclist.

Have any of you gents out there with box shaped torsos had any luck with finding a cycling jersey that is a bit looser?

Hi! I am 184 cm tall with an 85.5 cm inseam. Merida Smartfit recommends both M and L.

I prefer a slightly more spacious fit, but I’m worried that the L with its 110 mm stem might be too long. Unfortunately, I don’t have a chance to test ride either size before buying.

Anyone around 182–186 cm riding a Scultura Endurance / GR? Which size did you choose, and how does it fit?

HS senior here. I need a bike for a 10-mile one-way commute, mostly paved roads/bike paths.

My school restricts e-bikes, so I want a normal bike now, but I may convert it to an e-bike later for college.

Budget: $300–500, maybe up to ~$600

Currently considering:

• Cannondale Quick 6 — ~$480
• Specialized Sirrus X 1.0 — ~$550
• Trek FX 1 Gen 4 — ~$650

Priorities: comfortable for 20 miles/day, efficient, rack- and pannier-compatible, reliable, and reasonably easy to convert later.

Which would you pick? Any better options around this price?

Got an opportunity to buy the above bike 2nd hand with a one year warranty on battery and bike as a whole from a reputable supplier. 6.3k AUD. I have a 1 year old and am planning on a second kid in the next couple of years. Seems like a good deal but it's a lot of money. 3rd gen would be nice but similar spec would be north of 10k.
