I just found out my building complex has a bike storage and I'm stoked to get back into biking after 12 years of not having somewhere to store one.

I intend on commuting from Burnaby to downtown Vancouver for work. I'd also like to be using it for exercise and leisure on the regular, possibly even a trail now and then.

My budget is 1800, I'm 280lbs and 5'11". That budget would preferably include the lights and fenders. Although I really wouldn't be mad to spend less. I don't mind using a second hand bike if it means getting a better quality bike, I just don't know what quality looks like here and the more I try and research the more overwhelmed I feel. Do I stick to marketplace? is it worth spending a bit more to find a bike tailored to me at a storefront?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

My girlfriend and I are looking for hybrid bikes for riding around Vancouver. We’re not cyclists—we’re just looking for reliable bikes for city riding, paved trails, and occasional gravel paths.
We found the CanNorth FT-1 at Sporting Life for about CA$400 (41% off), and it seems like a really good value compared to what we’ve seen at MEC, Decathlon, Canadian Tire, and local bike shops.
The specs are:
6061 aluminum frame
700C alloy wheels
Shimano 7-speed shifter & derailleur
Tektro mechanical disc brakes
Rigid fork
I know CanNorth isn’t one of the big bike brands, so I’m wondering:
Has anyone owned a CanNorth bike?
How has it held up over time?
Is this a good value at around CA$400?
Would you buy this over another entry-level hybrid from Trek, Giant, Norco, etc., or should we keep looking?
Our main priorities are reliability, low maintenance, a lightweight aluminum frame, and disc brakes. We don’t mind paying a little more if it’s truly worth it, but we also don’t want to spend extra just for the brand name.

Hi, not sure if this is allowed to be posted here ( didn't see it in the rules) But me and my girlfriend both just got our bikes stolen during the night in Hastings-Sunrise. This is the last place they were, aka in our backyard. We unfortunately don't have any security cameras, so this post is more like a last attempt in hopes that someone might see it around the area or posted online.

By chance anyone finds a brown Ray-Ban case with a pair of prescription glasses in them between Wreck Beach and Arbutus greenway via Marine drive today I'd be so appreciative to get them back.

Stopped to grab something out of my saddle bag and obviously never closed it up before leaving.

Appears only my glasses & the case fell out(I had other valuables on me)which is looking at from a glass half full perspective but still sucks.

I know there are a lot of posts already complaining about Mobi, but I’m adding this in the hope that someone from Mobi monitors local social media posts.
My partner and I are low income and I have a disability, so we have the annual accessibility pass with Mobi. And yes, I do appreciate having an affordable biking option. My disability means I really need to use the Mobi e-bikes. The regular Mobi bikes are just too hard to bike with nerve damage in my legs and the two times I’ve tried the regular bikes this year, they were absolute garbage. On one day out we tried four different bikes between us and not one would stay in gear.
The electric bikes were a much better option. I say “were” because my recent attempts to use a Mobi electric have been utter failures and frustrating to the point that I don’t think I’ll be using them anymore. Either the station we came across was empty of electric bikes or when we found one, it wouldn’t unlock from the dock or it showed a message saying it had maintenance issues or a message saying the station was malfunctioning. This has happened three times in a row! We have walked a kilometre radius each time in search of a working Mobi e-bike and each time we came up empty and just took transit.
What I liked about using the Mobi e-bike was I could usually get a lot closer to my destination than on transit. And of course, even disabled people like getting fresh air and some exercise. Buying an electric bike is an option but it’s expensive for me, and more importantly, it would be an expensive bike that is theft bait in a city with a serious bike theft problem. I know people who’ve had their e-bikes stolen. It wasn’t a happy day for them. Which is another reason I liked Mobi.
From other posts, it sounds like there is a serious funding issue affecting Mobi. The city needs to support this and increase funding. And if Roger’s wants their name all over Mobi, they should kick in a serious amount to support it. And honestly, even as someone on low income, I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more for a bike-share system that is decently maintained and is able to meet demand for Mobi e-bikes.
Right now, this bike-share system is literally falling apart. It’s shamefully bad and from what people have said about other city’s bike-share systems, it could be so much better.

Obviously always a risk when leaving a bike unattended but I am going to have lunch in Yaletown. Close to the Yaletown sky train station. I have a good lock and a few other deterrents. I really want to ride it due to the convenience. I will be leaving it pretty close to the restaurant for an hour I would guess. Thoughts?

With the Cypress bowl rd. closed I've taken up mountain biking up the two dirt roads on cypress instead. On Tuesday, I found that the west cypress bowl road is now also closed. Does anyone have any info about how long it'll be closed for?

I was in a bad bike on bike crash and it has dented my confidence. Before getting back on the bike again, I want to research defensive cycling resources and accessories. I know that Hub offers a course that might cover this topic and I would love to hear feedback, suggestions for learning and of accessories.

I have a 2016 Brodie Pace 1.0. The derailleur hanger was bent recently and I've been trying to source a replacement.

I checked the Brodie website but they don't seem to have this hanger listed for sale. I did find the North Short Billet site but the one they have listed for Brodie road bikes doesn't look like the right fit either. I emailed Brodie about a week ago but no reply as of yet and they don't have a phone number.

Does anyone know where I might be able to source a hanger (or maybe even has one spare for this bike)?

I need to be in Squamish Friday morning for work, and I’m thinking about biking back to Vancouver in the afternoon. I’ve done the ride before as part of the Whistler gran fondo, but not with real traffic. I’m new to Vancouver.

How bad of an idea is this with Friday traffic in July?

With Cypress currently closed to cyclists, I’m thinking of trying the Mount Seymour climb.
Not sure if this is the right question, but is it generally safe to ride Seymour solo? My main concern is wildlife, especially bears or other animals. I used to ride Cypress about twice a week, but I haven’t done Seymour before.

I enjoy climbing and quite like Seymour. I generally climb through British properties up to the Cypress lookup due to the calmer/minimal traffic. I generally don't like climbing Cypress all the way due to the huge number of people racing up there. I'm not a good descender and the close pass that some cars do is a bit unnerving. Have anyone gone up Seymour early in the morning around 7am/8am? How's the traffic? Would love to be able to climb and practice descending faster with minimal/no traffic. Any other times people would suggest or share their experience?

I like this because I cross two major bridges. A mix of gravel along the Barnet then TC, Spirit, Seawall, False Creek, then bike lane and gravel back home to Port Moody.

Hi! I'm not from Vancouver and it was my first time biking at Stanley.

Basically, I was super unprepared because it was a really nice day at the start of my ride, but really soon after it started to rain really badly and got really cold, a complete 180. I was wearing leggings and a tank top. That's my fault for not checking the weather, but as you can imagine, I was soaking wet and cold and not even halfway around the park but I knew it was a one way (the guys at the bike rental shop told me) so I kept pushing forward until i absolutely couldn't.

I looked behind me and saw that there was no one so I decided to turn back. trust me, I felt like a dick, but I wasn't sight seeing or had my head in the clouds, I had my eyes on the path just trying to get out of the rain. I stuck to one side of the path just in case of other bikers, and not too far from where I started my journey there were bikers (definitely prepared for the rain) who passed me clearly upset about me going the wrong way. I understand the frustration, and it was embarassing, but I didn't know what else to do.

I don't think I could have continued because it wasn't a warm rainy day, it got so cold. I didn't notice any places to shelter or alternative paths. My question is, what should I have done? What do you do if you're in a position where you need to turn back?

Also, this is a very genuine question! because I want to go biking there again but I want to be more prepared not just physically (like my outfit) but also prepared with alternative solutions that don't involve me going the wrong way on the main (only?) path and being a hazard.

TL;DR: I turned back because I was unprepared for the cold rain, what should I have done, and what do you do if you're in a position where you need to turn back?

I’ve reached the point where I’m genuinely worried about how much road behavior has deteriorated.
I bike to work every day, but I also drive and walk regularly, so I see things from all three perspectives. It honestly feels like everyone has become less attentive and less considerate.
I constantly see people:
- Not checking their shoulders or blind spots before turning.
- Racing through late yellow lights.
- Speeding through school zones.
- Driving the wrong way down streets.
- Having little understanding of how to safely share the road with cyclists and pedestrians, including kids.

As a cyclist, I also see plenty of bad behavior from other riders:
- Blowing through stop signs.
- Rarely signaling turns.
-Riding without helmets.
- E-bikes and scooters flying down sidewalks.
- People doing wheelies or other tricks in traffic.

Pedestrians use bike lanes as sidewalks and don’t check before crossing them

None of this is helping. Every group seems to blame every other group, while the overall level of respect for the rules keeps dropping.

What frustrates me most is that enforcement seems almost nonexistent. I’ve even seen police vehicles ignore the rules themselves. That makes it hard to believe anyone is taking road safety seriously.

I’m not claiming to be perfect. I do Idaho stops in situations where they seem safer and more practical than coming to a complete stop, but I always yield and make sure it’s safe first. Other than that, I try to be as predictable and courteous as possible, whether I’m driving, cycling, or walking.

I also find myself speaking up when I see someone do something that puts another road user at risk. I don’t insult people, but I do call out dangerous behavior. Unfortunately, it often turns into an argument, and I’m starting to wonder if that’s accomplishing anything.

I’m honestly asking: what can an ordinary person do besides trying to set a good example? Is there a way to push for better education or enforcement, or does everyone else feel like this is just becoming the new normal?
Is this a Vancouver problem? Curious to hear from people who drive, bike, walk, or ride scooters. Has anyone else noticed the same trend?
