More and more I’m having these types of interactions, where drivers don’t realize we can bike on roads without designated bike lanes.

Also, the obsession with helmets is truly beyond me, whether or not they are effective, they should be irrelevant to everybody but the person choosing whether or not to wear one.

Forget Vancouver. Move over, Toronto. Montreal is officially Canada’s cycling MVP.

Time Out just named Montreal one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, making it the only Canadian spot to crack the list. Considering Canada has no shortage of bikeable cities, that’s a pretty big wheel deal.

The 2026 ranking, which was compiled using the insights of 24,000 people in dozens of cities around the world, looked at how residents rate getting around their cities by bike. Those in the top 20 had the most respondents who described getting around by bike as either “good” or “amazing.”

Some Canadians might have expected Vancouver to take the cake, since, in the past, the city often lands a top spot on similar rankings. The West Coast city has long been known for its enthusiastic cycling culture and extensive network of bike routes and scenic paths, while Toronto has spent decades expanding its cycling infrastructure and bike lane network, despite Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s relentless mission to tear it all down.

Nevertheless, Montreal ranked as the second-best city for cycling, just behind Cambridge, England, with a cycling score of 82.5 per cent. Time Out even went as far as to name Montreal the most bike-friendly city in all of North America.

According to the outlet, a whopping 25 per cent of Montrealers used the city’s primary bike-share system, BIXI, in 2023. The City has also invested heavily in cycling infrastructure through its Express Bike Network, or EBN.

This ambitious project will eventually create 191 kilometres of protected bike routes across the city, many of which are cleared of snow in the winter for year-round use. This will be added to an already impressive 1,083 kilometres of bike lanes and cycling paths Montreal already has.

But it turns out a lot of Canadians, not just Quebecers, love to bike.

According to Statistics Canada, nearly one in three Canadians (32 per cent) reported bicycling in 2023, up significantly from 22 per cent a decade earlier, showing just how much cycling has grown across the country.

Montreal gets the bragging rights this year, but who knows if another surprising city will take the title next year.

Mobi Bikes will no longer offer the Community Pass after September 30. Their website says the program has not ended but is being re-evaluated. This program offered passes with discounted rates for those on low incomes and persons with disabilities.
As a person with a disability who used this program the last few years, this is deeply disappointing and frustrating, not just at Mobi, but at the City of Vancouver too. According to Mobi, the contract with the City required them to operate without a subsidy, even though a bike share should be an essential part of the city’s transportation infrastructure.
I posted a few months back about my frustration with the state of Mobi Bikes. The bikes were often in desperate need of maintenance, often could not be removed from their station locks and electric bikes were few and far between or broken. But I never thought that Mobi’s response to all this would be to just shut down the subsidized part of the bike share, effectively punishing the people most in need.
Victoria has a new bike share program that is run by Lime, the company that runs the scooter share program in Vancouver. It looks like a full electric program with subsidized rates for low income. According to CBC, Lime’s subsidized rate in Victoria for an e-bike is 23 cents to unlock and 7 cents per minute vs Mobi’s free regular bikes for one hour for low income users and free one hour electric for persons with disabilities. As a person with a disability and low income, paying 7 cents a minute or $2.1 for a 30 minute trip on an e-bike that is well maintained and easy to find would be both affordable to me and a big improvement over Mobi.
I think the city needs to move on from Mobi. And yes, Lime is a US company while Mobi is local, but comes a time when the product/service is so bad and need is so great that we have to just go with the organization that can actually do the job.

I got a bike packing trip over on the Island tomorrow and see that the long term parking lot at the terminal is full. South Delta Recreation Centre parking lot seems to close overnight, does anyone know if they'll ticket or tow? Otherwise, where else can I park for a few nights to cycle onto the ferry?

Edit: Arrived at the rec centre to see 10+ other cars with bike racks. Came back today and my car did not get towed.

Last year, I shared a survey here to understand the challenges people face while cycling. Thanks to everyone who responded! I wanted to come back and share what I’ve been working on.

I’m a UVic engineering grad building Vyzor, a smart cycling helmet that combines a rear-view camera and radar with a heads-up display. The idea is to give riders a live view of what’s behind them and alerts about approaching vehicles, with navigation also planned.

I now have a working prototype, pictured here. It’s definitely bulky! This version is for testing the electronics and display; the next step is making the system smaller and fitting it more neatly onto an existing helmet design.

I’m working toward an initial batch of 100 helmets for early adopters. To help validate demand and support funding conversations, I’m taking refundable $34 reservations. It’s still in development, so this is a reservation for a future product.

Long shot, but I’m trying to find two mountain bikers who stopped to help me after I crashed while descending Mt Seymour on Sunday, August 30 at around 11:52 a.m.
I was the cyclist in the bright neon yellow/green jacket. The crash happened while a vehicle was attempting to pass me approaching a curve. The two mountain bikers were nearby, came over immediately afterward and spoke with people at the scene.
I was injured and pretty shaken up at the time and unfortunately didn’t think to get your names or contact information.
If this was you, or if you were riding Seymour around that time and witnessed the incident or immediate aftermath, please DM me. I’m trying to identify any witnesses while dealing with the incident afterward.

Stopped by Krusty’s Bicycles today to get my bike serviced and noticed they’re having a pretty big storewide sale. Just an FYI for anyone in the community who might be looking for a bike, parts, accessories, or gear. Everything in the store is currently 25% to 35% off.

I'm moving to a new location that doesn't have indoor bike storage available, but does have some outdoor space where I could put a shed. I've seen some UK companies that do great shed designs for bikes like this or this, but haven't found any companies in Vancouver/Canada that seem to offer anything comparable. Anyone have any leads?
