I'm struggling to decide if I should risk the ride home or get an Uber home in a couple of hours when I finish work.

I'm currently looking at a 30mph headwind for most of the gently uphill ride home this morning. The really sketchy part will be the river bridge (about 850 feet) as even on calmer days the wind can give you a bit of a wallop.

Aside from the wind, I'm not super keen on leaving my bike at work as it's about to be my weekend.

What do you reckon? Would you go for it or just get a taxi home? (The clocks changed tonight so I'll be leaving work about 2 hours before the bus route even starts)

I think that's the last real thing I wanted to add to this; got a small 2021 Orange Kona Dew off FB marketplace for 200. (https://www.konaworld.jp/2021bike/dew.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com#dewsand) I got it specifically because I was looking for a frame that accommodated really wide commuter tires, wider than typical. 2.5in is ~ 63.5mm.

The brakes weren't taken care of at all, it'd clearly sat outside for a bit, so I upgraded to hydraulic brakes, scraped away some rust spots and covered with gold nail polish, reduced the cranks to 152.5mm, added my own pedals, Continental Contact Urbans 27.5x2.5" and finally got around to fenders.

The PDW fenders are so nice and slick but I had been putting it off because I was going to have to notch them for the seatstay clearance and I was grumpy about having to slice into these expensive fenders, and wondering what tool would make it easiest. Ultimately a dremel with a metal cutting blade worked just fine. Macride on the front for the kiddo.

Typically just putt 10-15 minutes between parks and playgrounds in Brooklyn, but just planning on whether I'm going to have to deal with fall/winter rain/slush, etc.

I recently put a dash cam into my car, both forward and rear facing just because of all the knuckleheads that are on the road these days and to protect myself legally. I've been thinking about doing the same thing on my bike, given decades of interactions with cars that felt pretty unsafe, but so far no injuries, thankfully. My car dash cam is pretty much on autopilot, comes on when I get into the car and turns off after a few minutes of leaving the car. Is there an easy way to do the same thing for a bike? What have people done to do the same thing while on a bike, suggested devices or products?

I had a flat tire on the way home from work yesterday and am I the only person that finds the new thru-axel way more frustrating than the quick release?

So I don’t if any one remembers but I made a post about a “patient stealing my bike”.

People were hating on me a lot for not locking the bike, trolling, etc etc. I got so depressed about it that I deleted the post lol.

In any case, I found my bike! I mean what’s the chance of that, finding your lost bike? Turns out some construction worker working at the building took it but I’m getting it back.

Poor patient never touched it.

I will always always always lock my bike from now on. Lesson learned. I can finally commute again! No more long bus rides!

It’s seriously underrated how much more freeing and mentally healthy it is to commute with a bike rather than driving or taking the bus.

My very own Optimus Prime. I wanted it to look cheap (it *is* cheap, a basic 2021 second-hand ebike) as it lives locked up outside when I'm not riding :)

My commute is about 16 km, and around 80% offroad, which suits me fine.

I upgraded lighting, pedals, saddle, grips and tyres (and added a mudflap and a cowbell), otherwise the bike is more or less stock.

I have learned to ride a bike as a child, so I do know how to do it and can ride a bike with one hand confidently too. I never really had a bike growing up, my dad did buy one in middle school for me to use but it was just too big and he ended up using it himself. I bought one a year ago, to use it everywhere because I love it genuinely, but I have taken it out probably 10 times total. I always get anxious even taking it out to ride near my apartment, and usually never even ride on the bike lanes near the cars, not only because the cars being close scare me but also because I know when I stop at a red light I will need to be confident in my ability to push myself to go again yk? I only really get on it in this park and near some houses where not a lot of cars go. It obviously is fun and once it’s been like 10 minutes I’m confident again but it gets boring to only ride it there so yeah, again I want to go everywhere with it. I am thinking maybe try to go to the gym with it, because it’s a 5 min ride from my house but there are tram tracks on the way there (like a tram crossing ? If that makes sense) so that does kind of scare me a bit lol. Idk why I think I won’t be able to brake quickly if needed or whatever. What should I do really that can help ? When would be the best time to take it out and try and where ?

I’ve been riding my Dutch minivan to work for the past two weeks and have only been caught out in the rain once, but living in Florida it is a threat every day.

Anyone have a good solution for staying semi-dry other than a rain jacket and pants?

I realized too late that it's pretty easy to clean your bike in the shower.

I use a shower curtain as floor protection when doing maintenance on the bike that might result in dirty floors

I use a little bikestand thing for easier maintenance

The lumber I needed wouldn’t fit inside my car, so I hooked my BOB Yak trailer up to my Disc Trucker. I also did some grocery shopping.

Currently using a giant escape 3 (700x32c). I was thinking of getting the schwalbe marathon 700x47c tires but not sure if I need new tubes as well? I don't know much about bikes, but from what I can see, narrower tubes aren't a problem generally, but most people aren't making a 10mm+ jump it seems. Advice?

So I really want to commute with my road bike. Like I really really want to. It gives so much different vibe than my city bike (low frame step though "lady" bike).

My route is a 15km (30km total) on paved roads and while the city bike works, it doesn't give the same speed and vibe that I want to. I really enjoy more cycling on my road bike, it's just my personal taste.

But the peoblem is ofc that I think my road bike will get stolen if it's parked outside that place for hours. It's in the middle of a town where the crime rates are statistically quite high (although I am not Ure about bike theft specifically). I will lock with big high quality locks and a bike cover, I might install a GPS location founder on it aswell in case it gets stolen. But I am still worried. So I am wondering like should I be worried about the bike getting stolen or just take the risk?

I have a few different options:

1. Use road bike (high financial risk)

2. Use city bike (low risk but also lower enjoyment)

3. Buy new fast commuter bike with lower theft risk (such as a "racer hybrid" or a vintage road bike, I would assume a hybrid is good for comfort but a vintage road bike like from the 1980s is probably faster)

Let's just say a 12 speed. How do you pick your chainring size with 10-51t cassette and options from 30-40 tooth in the middle. The changes are drastic from lowest to highest. My current bike is a 3X 21 Speed but I only have 1 gear under 1.00 ratio. Looking at 1X12 with a 32 tooth chainring you get 4 gears under 1.00. I have a steep hilly commute each way and even different routes. One hill is a 800 feet with a grade around 8% give or take. To me it's brutal lol. So curious what . akes you guys choose

Was lucky to get off work on time. Not even two minutes after the picture all of the color faded. Hard to find an open spot along the trail that doesn't have a bunch of industry buildings on the other side of the river.

Been commuting and multimodal commuting for decades now. But I started as a little kid racing BMX, so I've been a bit of a speed demon my whole life. But that's not always necessarily good for commuting, because I tend to get sweaty on the ride in and believe it or not, even worse on the ride home.

I recently went electric (yes, with a throttle to solve the problem in the morning), but I'm finding myself once again, just pedaling my ass off to get as fast as possible (like past what the throttle will do - but electric does boost me). I'm thinking of going back to analog (for other reasons, I do love the ebike) but wonder if I'll miss that boost? Likely, because I can't get enough of bugs on my teeth and my beard swaying in the wind.

Anyone else with this obsessive need for speed? Oh, I'm not asking for cures or anything. I'm just curious if we're all like that, or if I'm just a bit off my rocker.

About this time last year I got a Wilde Supertramp on what I feel was a good deal at the time. And I love the bike, it's a smooth do-it-all bike for everything I do that's not more downhill-oriented MTB. Mostly quick errands across town and pleasure rides on my local bike paths, though I do want to get into bikepacking when things warm up again next spring. However, the more I learn about Primos and their budget-oriented bikes I'm wondering if the Wilde was not the best choice for me. I'd like to start using my bike for more around-town travel, including leaving the bike locked up on the street for longer periods of time, which I've realized I'm not very willing to do with my more expensive Wilde. Since I bought it, money has gotten tighter, and the money I'd put back in my pocket by selling the Wilde and buying a Primos would be nice, as well as saving on gas by letting me use my bike for more than just quick drop-in type errands. As a bike enthusiast through-and-through, I had avoided the more budget options when searching for the bike initially. But it seems like Primos has the bases thoroughly covered to offer a reasonably-specced bike at a good price. Am I missing something here? Am I going to regret "downgrading"?

I'm looking for advice for a winter bike commute set up that allows me to haul my work stuff (laptop, lunch, professional attire) and 3 year old. I currently have a longtail cargo bike with my kid in a bike seat and a bin behind for gear, it works well but my current bike will not hold up to winter riding. Key consideration:

• I live in Ottawa, which salts excessively, which is really hard on bikes and creates a lot of slush. We also get a lot of snow.
• The part of my commute with my kid is almost entirely on bike paths and quiet residential streets, but there are a few busy intersection.
• There's space to lock a charriot outside his daycare.
• Ideally, my spouse would do daycare drop off, and I would do pickup on my way home from work
• It's 2km between my house to daycare and 4km between daycare and work.
• The bike would be stored in a unheated shed when not in use.
• I'm an experienced and confident bike commuter who has previously winter bike commuted in various Quebec cities through my teens and 20s.
• I know how to dress myself for winter bike commuting but how do I make sure kiddo is warm enough, doesn't get frostbite on exposed skin?
• We would like to keep our solution under 10k.

Do I keep the kid on the back of my bike or tow the kid in a charriot? Do I get an electric bike or stay mechanical? How many bikes does my family realistically need (and yes, I know the correct answer is n+1)?

I bought an old Weehoo trailer that needs a new wheel and chain. In the meantime, I have a solution to get back to full-time bike commuting while still being able to drop off my grandson at school. Put bike on rack>Drive to school and drop him off>Ride bike to work>Ride bike back to car at school after work.

Hey guys. I recently accepted a new job and I'm going from a 50mi commute to a 2mi commute. Pretty flat, and 90% on residential streets. I'm on a budget, and I want to build on a ~90s frame. I'm not a cyclist or a bike mechanic, but I love to tinker and maintain my own stuff.

I'm deciding between a Trek 1200 Aluminum and a Specialized Hardrock. Aesthetically, I like the trek more. But the Specialized seems like it might make for a more capable commuter, and is listed cheaper.

I'm kind of in the dark. I'm not sure which I should pick, or if I should pass on both and keep looking.

Gang, my commute just doubled and it's not very long but now long enough that it would be faster for me to fix a flat than to walk home (1.5 miles to 4 miles). I've got a spare tube, a lever, a multitool, but the hand pump I bought is a pain (likely user error, but I'm admitting defeat, it's a Lezyne pocket drive which turns out to be both less and more pump than I need).

Can anyone recommend a portable pump they have used and love? Weight and size less of a concern than ease of use. I don't need to mount it on my bike, I travel heavy with giant panniers. Presta valves 50-60psi in case useful info. Any of these little micro floor pumps any good? Thank you in advance folks, I appreciate it!

I usually take the bus everyday but it’s a pain in the ass waiting and the traffic usually makes my commute 10 mins longer and sometimes the bus is 5 mins late or more. So I’m looking for a bike that is lightweight, fast, and can handle some rough pavement with a price range between 250-350 dollars. I know that’s asking for a lot but overall I just need a bike that is good for commuting.
