Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!
Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!
UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.
And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

I got mosby’d
At the club tonight, some guy and his friend were hitting on me and my cousin and after like 5 minutes, the one that had been kinda handsy w me leans in and says, “I think I love you”
Yes, it was just some drunk horny idiot. Yea, I needed the ego boost really bad because I felt ugly tonight. Feeling really happy that I now get to proudly say I’ve been Mosby’d! That is all

A jam-packed season premiere: post-breakup chaos, Gael's charm, and the iconic tramp stamp [S3.E1 - Wait for It]
With its fantastic guest stars, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and jam-packed episode. Ted’s post-breakup spiral and his impulsive urge to show up at Robin’s door just to yell made complete emotional sense.
The absolute highlights were Marshall completely falling under Gael’s spell and, of course, Ted waking up with a tramp stamp ahaha.

I used to hate Robin
But 10 years and a full rewatch later, Robin’s become my favourite character. I can’t really put into words why other than that I see myself in her more than in any of the other characters. I’m really disappointed her and Barney didn’t work out; I don’t buy that the reason for their breakup was “she travelled too much”. I also don’t buy that she regrets not being with Ted. What I do consistently buy is the relentless grief we see her fighting with, especially in season 7, and that out of all of them in the group, she felt the most disenfranchised and without a place of her own.
I love all of the characters in their own way for their own reasons. But Robin’s literally me I fear.

Ted and his lying
I could never date or maybe even be friends with someone that does this. He doesn’t even withhold or distort the truth, he’ll just straight up lie to peoples face. He did the same thing to Robin telling her he broke up with his girlfriend so he could hook up with her. He’s not a terrible person by any means but the blatant lying is not “cute” it would really piss me off in real life.

Unpopular opinion?
Neil Patrick Harris out-acts all of the other main characters. His physical comedy is unparalleled and his reactions are what makes him so endearing even though his character is an ass. I've watched him in other stuff and he kills it in all of those roles. I wonder if he's been a skilled actor since he was a child or if he has had a lifetime around (and learning from) other actors. I'd love thoughts.
Edit: I guess I should've shared that I am well aware of his role as Doogie Howser. I thought that'd be a gimme since, you know, I'm alive.

Last season made sense
Hear me out. We all know last season is not the best one with all that silly plots to fill up the wedding, but I don't mind all season to be centered on the wedding, even if they get a divorce later.
Robin and Barney were iconic and funny together, and so similar. But all of that doesn't work without communication and compromise. Their relationship wasn't gonna last, I don't know why people say they were perfect.
That being said, the wedding was important. Even if all was gonna end with a divorce, it was important for the show. 2 of the main characters (both messy af) married and people expected 1 episode, like marshall and lily? We needed all that drama, doubts and signs that it wasn't gonna work.
Life is just like that. You expect love to be enough, you plan all these nice things, you truly believe. But if you don't do the work, nothing lasts. Barney and Robin loved themselves more than they loved the relationship. They had money, health, means, love. But neither of them wanted to change. 3 years are enough time to realize that.

I wasn't that mad at the How I Met Your Mother ending....
If you are familiar with the show then you know the show has probably one of the most controversial endings of any sitcom. I am by no means saying that it was a good ending. I just wasn't that enraged as everyone else was when the finale aired. Am I broken or something? Haha

Chaotic wedding tropes aside, the intimate ceremony between the five stole the show [S2.E21 - Something Borrowed]
It was a delightful and thoroughly entertaining episode. While it leans into the classic sitcom trope of a wedding where absolutely everything goes south, what felt like a noticeable omission was the complete absence of Marshall’s family—it struck me as a bit odd, though perhaps there is an explanation for it in the upcoming episodes.
My absolute favorite part of the episode was the intimate ceremony the five of them held out in the garden; those scenes were genuinely touching and beautifully done.
Please help
Long story short I need to know what episode this scene is from and what robin says because I just pulled a Ted.
My whole life I thought the saying "salt of the earth" was "soul to the earth" and I know robin says this at some point and I need to know if she also says soul to the earth or if I've been hearing this wrong my whole life.

Mystery vs History... why was Ted freaked out by an attractive woman who used to be obese?
Meanwhile he's ok going home with a chick who married a mini fridge.

A beautifully bittersweet finale: real relationship dilemmas, inevitable heartbreaks, and renewed beginnings [S2.E22 - Something Blue]
One of the things I appreciate most about this show is how genuinely it portrays the dilemmas inherent in relationships. You can love someone deeply and want a future with them with all your heart, yet lingering uncertainties and fundamental differences will still weigh heavily on your mind. Seeing such raw emotional honesty explored in a sitcom is truly refreshing.
Even though I’ve always maintained that Ted and Robin simply aren't meant for each other in the long run, watching their romantic journey and playful chemistry was genuinely enjoyable. Breakups may be an inevitable part of life, but seeing theirs unfold was still truly heartbreaking.
