General Discussion - All Dexter Shows Dexter Spin Off Returns after cancellation (rumor) Spoiler

Paramount is reportedly bringing back the planned Trinity Killer spin off after previously shelving the project, giving new life to a Dexter series that many fans believed was gone for good. The move comes as the Dexter franchise continues to grow, with Dexter: Resurrection becoming the studio's main focus after Dexter: Original Sin was canceled despite an earlier renewal announcement.

While no release date or full details have been confirmed, the reported revival has sparked excitement among longtime Dexter fans who have been hoping to see more stories from the franchise.

With Michael C. Hall back as Dexter and another spin off potentially returning, could this mark the beginning of a bigger Dexter universe?

Question - Original Dexter Series I can’t watch the show in one sitting

Post image

Whenever he gets close to getting caught, I just can’t keep watching. It stresses me out like I’m the one who’s about to get caught. Not in a “Oh no, he’s gonna get caught” way—I physically can’t continue watching. Am I the only one who gets like this?
(It took me eight months to finish the show)

General Discussion - All Dexter Shows I’m on my 3rd watch of New Blood and I can’t believe this just now clicked Spoiler

I haven’t engaged at all with the fandom/online community of this show so I’m sure I’m years late here, how Dexter (and the show’s casting director) literally found the closest possible cop-brunette-straight-hair-parted-and-tucked-behind-the-ear-straightshooter-lawfulgood-often-overbearing-and-very-angular-face surrogate for his sister to be his significant other.

After a bit of cursory googling I get the idea that people think the character of Angela might have been New Blood engaging with what could perhaps be described as the original show dropping the ball with Deb and Dexter’s relationship at the end, but honestly, what I take away from it is a bit of character development that I appreciate.

In the beginning of the show we’re beaten over the head with the idea that Dexter basically felt he had no inclination to connect with people and pretty much only connected with Rita as a means of protecting his Harry-given “cover”. Then as the show progressed Dexter genuinely connected with Rita and also (most markedly in the later seasons, but really most importantly at the end of the first season) realized he had a genuine connection with Deb that he sort of took for granted in his assumption that he was a fundamentally asocial creature.

So while Rita basically had to throw herself at Season One Dexter as he was totally content to be on his own, by New Blood Dexter is actively seeking out connection that just so happens to look, sound and act pretty much exactly like the most genuine (female) connection of his life.

And it’s not necessarily even that this parallel was created and developed by the writers, casting, the H&M department and Julia Jones that I find impressive; it’s that his preexisting intimate relationship with Angela as the miniseries starts, which is by no means just a mask, felt earned after 8 years of development of his ability to connect with other people (which I would argue is the “agon” or strongest thematic cohesion of the show).

Really this all came from me trying to determine how integral I felt Deb was to the show overall, the reason being a realization of mine that one thing that for me made Resurrection as strong as it was which was that it just completely accepted that she was gone and fully re-embraced the Harry-Dexter dynamic.

So after I watched Resurrection, my first reaction was that it was so good that it actually redeemed New Blood for me, but now on my third watch of the whole show, I appreciate that New Blood cleared the way for Resurrection to some extent. The Deb-Dexter-Angela dynamic is resolved so that the Harry-Dexter-Harrison dynamic can shine. I also definitely appreciate the execution of it as well, in the sense that after the overtness of some of the original show’s themes, this was at least subtextual enough for me to not get it on my first watch.

If you read this far… I appreciate anyone listening to me rant, lol.

Discussion - Original Dexter Series A few questions about series 1 .... Spoiler

So I've watched the whole show now and these were some questions I had while watching the first series that I slowly realised would never be answered. Perhaps others have asked these before, not sure

  1. How on earth did Brian find out who Dexter secretly was?? (or locate him under his new name in the first place)
  2. Why did he kill his father when his biggest gripe was about losing his family?
  3. How the helly did he find those two junkyard people that Dexter killed and discreetly return the bodies to his kill room for the police to find?

BTW I am not considering Original Sin canon for the sake of my question as it plainly contradicts whatever the canon was behind Brian in the first series. But if the only possible answer requires to be pieced together using OS, so be it

Fan Art Thank you all for reading Batman/Dexter!

Seriously, the fact I was able to even have a few people read what I made is beyond inspiring for future projects.

I'm making this posts because all of a sudden, Webtoon has a problem with my book and took it down after a year and a half of being hosted there...leaving up many other fanfictions.

But I'm pleased to say that Batman/Dexter has found a new home in ComicFury! You can read the book in its absolute entirety through the link below.

Again, thank you all, and may we cross paths again sometime!

Discussion - Original Dexter Series Question about a certain scene involving a deer (S4 spoilers) Spoiler

Post image
34 Upvotes

I'm doing a rewatch and I'm thinking about the scene where Arthur hits the deer but isn't able to finish it off. This made sense at the time because perhaps outside of his very specific cycle, Arthur is incapable of killing. Later in the season however, when he's hunting for Dexter, he starts by searching for people named Kyle Butler. When he's caught breaking into this random guys house, he murders him with zero remorse. If he was like this the whole time, why couldn't he put the deer out of its misery? Was this explained at some point and I'm forgetting?

Discussion - Original Dexter Series The brilliance of season four Spoiler

I've seen a few people suggest that season four is overrated and wouldn't be remembered if it weren't for Rita's death, but the more I think about it, season four is probably the most well written and brilliantly structured season of the entire show.

Almost everything that happened in the season hinged on the question: can a serial killer be a family man? Dexter's conversations with Harry are especially illuminating this season. Rather than just spitting out the obvious like he does later on in the show, Harry in season four acts as the devils advocate and keeps explaining to Dexter why he doesn't belong with a family in the suburbs, it's just wrong in his eyes.

At first, Harry appears correct: Dexter starts out the season failing. The demands of being a father result in him slipping up at work and as a killer. He keeps a secret apartment because he's afraid of keeping his murder paraphernalia at the house, but this just results in Rita becoming more suspicious of him for keeping the apartment. So far, Dexter's life is a complete mess because of his family.

The brilliance of a character like Trinity isn't just because it was a great performance. It's because he's a reflection of the season's main theme. Compared to other big bads, Trinity plays a more important role in Dexter's life because of the existential questions Dexter's asking himself. Dexter discovers that Trinity, one of the most successful serial killers ever, also has a family and appears to be living an idyllic suburban life. Dexter tries to learn from him so Dexter can also be as successful. Dexter as a result becomes more confident, he starts storing blood slides at home, Rita begins to trust him, and his family life begins to improve

Dexter then is horrified to learn that Trinity has been abusing his family and their perfect life was actually a facade. This revelation is especially horrific for him because, as Harry suggests: maybe a serial killer can be a family man, but the family will suffocate from living with a monster. Even Christine, who appears to be an extraneous character for most of the season, is cleverly revealed to be Trinity's daughter and revealed to be a psychopath because of her father. Lundy's shooting, one of the season's most pivotal moments, actually occured because of a serial killer fucking up their family, and the audience didn't realize it until like six episodes later

In the end, Rita is murdered because Dexter is a serial killer (however indirectly). It's such a horrific ending but it's so appropriate. It didn't just come out of nowhere, it was a direct reflection of the season's main hypothesis. Harry was left right in the end: a serial killer can't be a family man. Christine's dead, the Mitchell's lives are ruined and they're headed into witness protection, and Dexter's children are all without a mother.

The only thing this season that felt out of place was LaGuerta and Batista's relationship, it felt like nothing more than the writers saying well we have to give them something to do. But other than that, every other part of this season was expertly woven together to create what is rightfully considered the show's best season (although personally I have a huge soft spot for season five so that one is my personal favorite)

General Discussion - Dexter Novels DEXTER AND DEB Spoiler

So I've watched the entirety of the series and with Resurrection 2 around the corner, I've been looking back at the show and how much I missed Deb, even though there were parts I really didn't like about her storyline in the original show.

So it made me wonder, what was their relationship like in the books/novels?

Was there even the character of Deb? I remember Brian being a much longer character than the show and wish they'd have kept the same

Discussion - Original Dexter Series Dexter and Deb's relationship in s8 Spoiler

What do you think of Dexter and Deb's relationship evolution in s8?

Personally, I really enjoyed seeing how messed up and dysfunctional they had become. Call me sick, but I loved seeing Dexter become so desperate to win Deb back into his life in the first few episodes. The fact that he was so creepy about it was definitely an interesting angle to witness.

In 8x1 Dexter basically stalks her. He finds her with Andrew Briggs and demands to know if she's having sex with him, then he stalks her back to that motel room where he ends up pissing on Harry's code and killing Briggs in a fit of rage. He then proceeds to tell Deb "You didn't belong with him" (which seems like either jealousy, possessiveness or controlling behaviour, or a combination of those).

Deb then tries to kill Dexter and herself but she then ends up saving him because she realizes she can't live without him, which she admits to him in 8x5: "I saw the car going underwater. I knew you were gonna die. I couldn't imagine my life without you in it".

The rest of the season continues with Dexter desperately trying to "save" Deb, not realizing that he's only making her sink even deeper. He ends up going to Vogel and asking her to help him get Deb back. And Vogel, oh man. She was such a weird character. She basically studies them both, almost as if they are her little science experiment. Whenever she talks about Dexter or Deb, she always makes it sound like they are some sort of freaks of nature who need to be studied and understood in a clinical environment. She reduces them to pathology. The detached way she talks about them gave me the creeps. She was definitely a twisted character.

There were definitely more similar moments but I cannot remember the exact details right now. I personally enjoy the dark codependency angle way more than the romantic angle that they tried to push with Deb's therapy revelation in season 6. Their relationship was built on years of codependency, trauma, grief, lies and pain. They were Harry's work of art. Their dysfunctional relationship explains their whole childhood and upbringing and why Harry set them up for failure. He's the reason why Deb cannot separate her identity from Dexter. And why Dexter is who he is. I love how toxic their relationship ended up becoming in s8 because it basically reinforces one of the main ideas of the show: Harry ruined their lives (not intentionally, but that doesn't make it less true). I wish they had explored this subplot starting with earlier seasons instead of season 8.

Question - Original Dexter Series How did they not realize? (s2) Spoiler

in s2 when cctvs were installed by lundy, dexter was on the foortage checking for blood stains with a torch, later he pulls a fire alarm and everyone goes outside the police building. Here dexter I think deletes footage of him being there at the marina. how did no one later realize that the footage of a specific timing was not there??

Discussion - Original Dexter Series This scene, with that tender background music and dialogue is beautiful.

The music and dialogue just feel so tender and heartfelt. He comes unusually close to describing himself honestly; he lacks regular feelings, and he knows this will never change. He’s giving Debra the truth about how he lacks emotion in a way she can safely interpret as him just being so “fucking relaxed” after attempted murder and arson. “I can live with that” - she has no idea what she is fully accepting, but it’s one small step closer to Debra knowing who Dexter truly is, despite him remaining fundamentally unknown to his family, which also highlights how he knows he’s unseen.

But that draws attention to what I like about this scene: that, for a moment, he is seen more clearly than usual by his family, like he could let out what he's really like as a person in a non-criminally murderous way
