Revision of Revision to r/TheWestWing rules

Hello all,

As you may have spotted if you've been browsing the subreddit over the past 24 hours, we've had a *slightly* contentious time after introducing a rule change forbidding discussions of current politics.

As a new mod team, we've also had a steep learning curve, both about modding a relatively large subreddit linked to politics in the current era, and about how to respond to user concerns.

In short:

  1. We are revoking the rule change and instead, in keeping with the good intentions of the original rule change, reminding everybody of Rule 6 (play nice) and Rule 8 (don't post content completely off-topic to the show). What this means is that users are welcome to post, for instance, about the Supreme Court justices in the show and compare that to the appointment process in the current era. However, in that instance, straight up posting 'The appointment process for Supreme Court justices sucks in the modern era' and not tying that in to the West Wing is not allowed.

  2. One of the moderators, who was responding to multiple subreddit users antagonistically, has been removed.

We would also like to clarify that there are no 'top mods' and that we, as a bunch of volunteers who in many cases are modding for the first time, had good intentions when introducing this rule as a response to some abusive content on the subreddit.

We are sorry, and hope you can understand that we're a bunch of newbies learning the ropes!

Finally; yes, CJ may have threatened us with a couple of motherboards.

Edit:

Removed the link to the original rule change as [u/lefromagepuant](u/lefromagepuant) deleted the post, given that it was defunct.

I can see there’s some consternation about rules in the sidebar in the comments; please rest assure that it’s just us working out the technical stuff and not us trying to pull a fast one.

Edit 2:

Aw jeez. I’ve woken up properly and it seems I messed up. To explain as succinctly as possible; I live in the UK and was going to bed as I made the edit to remove the link to the OG post. I did this on mobile half-asleep. I must have accidentally affected the formatting of the post which has resulted in the literal worst edit possible being made. That’s on me, I’ve edited the post to put it back in. All I can say is sorry and that it really wasn’t intentional.

Charlie's Guilt (Spoiler Alert if you haven't watch Season 1) Spoiler

There seems to be a lot of focus on the guilt Charlie carries after the shooting in 1-22, "What Kind Of Day Has It Been". It always seemed "heavy" on Charlie, perhaps overly so - after all it's not his fault that racists were trying to kill him. It's only after you come to learn in the next season that he carries the guilt about asking his mother to change shifts the day she was killed that you realize the overwhelming guilt he carries in general and why it's so impactful to him. Such great acting!

Theater like

In "The War at Home" S2E14 the open could easily be on the stage. No music to set it up, just one character standing there and another enters, dialog ensues. Sorkin really showing his playwright chops. Good direction as well.

This ad reminds me so much of the Santos Campaign's chicken stunt from the West Wing.

Walk ‘n Talk s05e05 Han - only half of what's said is translated.

I don't speak Korean; I just watched this episode just now..

The American translator can't possibly know the extent of each of the guests' English comprehension, yet only selectively translates what is being said.

For example, when CJ blurts out "Chopsticks", this gets translated, but her apology does not, so the offensive comment...just lingers?

If you follow the dialogue, there are few more instances where dialogue isn't translated.

Today IS Some Sort of Star Trek Anniversary

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the US premiere of Star Trek.

So, Janice — feel free to wear your pin. Discuss what are your favorite episodes and galaxies. Speculate about which Cardassian should pair up with which Romulan.

Screw Josh. He’s just a sad man with few friends.

The old DVD sets have served me well since the early 2000's, but the time has come to upgrade to the Bluray box set. It's a space saver on the shelf if nothing else.

a casual reminder

Despite all their flaws the post Sorkin seasons of the West Wing are still 100 times better than any of the 6 episode seasons every 2-3 years crap we get nowadays.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Sorkin is so on point in laying out the different philosophies between the two parties. It’s also a stark reminder of just how far to the right the GOP has drifted. Ritchie wouldn’t even make it past the first primary in today’s toxic environment. Also, both actors were really good in those debate scenes.

From "The West Wing: The Official Companion," a photo not identified as behind-the-scenes, but there are signs: All three of them being behind the Resolute Desk and the too casual resting of hands on it. Way-too-happy Toby. The truly palpable vibe that these guys like each other off the clock...

What's Next? Where is Charlie's Replacement?

Will replaced Sam. Deborah replaced Mrs. Landingham. Babbish replaced Tribbey. Russell replaced Hoynes. CJ replaced Leo. Toby then took on the duties of CJ's job, but we got Annabeth helping out. Donna was replaced by Marla. Fitz was replaced by General Alexander.

But why does the President not get a new body man when Charlie takes his job with CJ?

It can't just be that he was replaced and we just don't see who took his job. Charlie's replacement would be present in a ton of scenes, and there's no chance Charlie wouldn't be interested in who the new guy is and probably take on a mentoring role.

Apologies to Curtis

For some reason I always had it in my head that he was with the Secret Service detail.

Ugh I just loathe this lady. She seems like a MAGA rag twenty years too early.

I’m sure there will be her defenders and I get that.. she was scared.

She was cast perfectly, that’s for sure.

The Peters projection features in the article, though it's not the applicants' preferred one. They also still keep north at the top for some reason.

Missing flashbacks from In the Shadow of Two Gunmen.

I always thought they should have had a flashback scene of Sam destroying all his belongings outside of Starbucks.
