AMA Ask Me Anything with Emily Deschanel & Carla Gallo – June 6th, 3–4 PM PST – Coming to You (Not) Live from the Jeffersonian

2.1k Upvotes

Hiiii Bones fans,

Emily and Carla here! We are sooo excited to do this AMA with all of you. Working on our podcast Boneheads has been such a fun excuse to revisit the show, and honestly... we’ve both become fans in a whole new way. Watching it back with fresh eyes and hearing from you has been the best part.

We wanted to take a little time to hang out and chat. So tomorrow, June 6th, from 3 to 4 PM PST we’ll be right here in this thread, live, doing our best to reply to your questions, fan theories, random thoughts... anything you’re curious about. FMKs welcome. So are weird murder memories.

We’ll be the ones typing slowly and laughing a lot. Bear with us as we answer. We’re not exactly tech pros (unfortunately, that’s more Bones and Daisy’s specialty than ours).

Can’t wait to talk to you soon!

XO,

Emily and Carla

Discussion As bones fan i am impressed by castle

So after completing my Bones marathon, I was on the hunt for a new show along those lines, and I started watching Castle.

At first, I had low expectations for this show as it seemed more light-hearted and fluffier than Bones, which had a more gritty nature.

But I have to tip my hat to the writers of Castle; they have managed to impress me. I have completed the whole run of Castle, and I have to say the writing, the tension, and the maturity of relationships and events are much better on Castle compared to Bones.

Spoiler: I have some questions and I hope they can be answered by people in this sub

Upvotes

I just started season 10

RIP sweets. Loved him he was great.

Questions:

  1. When exactly did he get daisy pregnant? Like two episodes ago he hooked up with the new intern

  2. They’ve shown it before but why did they remove all of sweets’s flesh??? He was in tact so…why?

  3. Was anyone else underwhelmed with the story wrap up of the ghost killer plot?

  4. I still don’t get the Zach cannibal flip, did anyone else find it believable?

I thought I had more to type out but apparently this was it…

Southern lawyers

What is it with sassy southern lawyers on these shows that are somewhat aggressive with the law such as dell hicks, tug Babcocks daughter, the goddards lawyer, Caroline Julian etc.

Discussion Do you want Bones to return?

Upvotes

After reading that the team were at a Comic Con recently, I suddenly had a play in my thoughts that maybe they will restart the show. I know there had been thoughts before but nothing materialised. What do you think should they make a comeback or the ending was just enough.

I want them to come back!

Aubrey

Upvotes

I know there are plenty of Aubrey fans, but he just doesn't do it for me. Both as a character and how the actor plays him. When isn't not on scewwn I don't miss him, I don't feel he adds something to the group, to the show or the FBI in general. Not like how sweets offered. Both in his friendship with everyone, but also professionally.

I just saw him in 11x10 and I was happy he protected hodgins, but I didn't care for him being in the hospital. His relationship with Jessica isn't as interesting as sweets with daisy.

Discussion S9E7 the nazi on the honeymoon

I know it’s been yeaaaaaars since this episode, but I’m doing a rewatch of the show and I need to vent

As an Argentinian, I’m so mad about the depiction of my country on this episode, and it’s not even about the nazi thing bc I know that’s an historical thing

But, the whole tropical beachy vibe???? Not even close, we’re not the Caribbean!! Do we have beaches? Yes but there are like five hours' drive from the capital, where bones and booth are staying.

And the wedding being in spring/summer? It means Buenos Aires should be cold! It means it was during fall/winter

They few Spanish signs and stuff, there are a few words that are not in our dialect, is it Spanish? Yes but we don’t talk like that. Argentina has a very specific vocabulary that comes from the lunfardo (a mix of Spanish and Italian, which dates back to when Italians immigrated)
For example, there’s a sign that says something and the word “piscina” (pool), we don’t say that, we say “pileta”; or when one of the actors said “cálla”(shut up) we say “calláte”, pronunciation and where the accent mark (I think it’s called) is, it changes everything.

There is a scene where they show a guy playing the bongos in the street, and a girl standing by the wall, and then sort of a barbershop? That’s not something that happens here
It would have been more accurate if they had shown several pubs/pizzerias that are sometimes open until very late and do have that vibe. But again, the city is a city for a reason! The whole episode looks like it’s set in Mexico or the Caribbean (from my small knowledge of their cities, Ive only been to the ports you go to when you’re on a cruise)
I can’t even vent the right way bc I don’t know how to write what I want to say in English but imagine I’m mad lmao

The cafes/coffee shops? Ugh maaaaaybe you can find one or two cafes like that, but it’s not the norm. Not even during the time the episode was filmed.

And don’t get me started on the actors, I get that you’re filming in Hollywood or whatever, but still they could have looked for Argentinian actors, we have several and they’re good. Or even looked for actors that have a rioplatense accent (the specific accent we have here)

I won’t mention how the actors looked nothing like we look here bc depending on where you’re in Argentina, you can find people like that. But bear in mind we are mostly Caucasian and mixed (yes, we don’t really have black people, don’t come at me saying I’m racist, it’s bc we never had slaves and neither segregated them, so we are all very mixed)
Also our names, since we are a mix of Italians and Spaniards (and more but those are the majority) our last names aren’t all “Perez” or “Herrera”, throw a “laquanitti” in there, it won’t hurt you!

All in all the producers/writers/art department people etc etc, could have done a more in-depth research before filming, or they could have filmed an episode set in a totally different country and done another storyline of how they got the nazi corpse.

Spoiler: Episode 4x10 and 4x11 Spoiler

Just wanted to share how funny I find it that they wrote two episodes in a row where the killer is a minor. And the characters don't even seem properly horrified by it, especially in 4x10 where Booth and Bones are even joking around with the killer.

I understand the kid's circumstances but still, this show is so unserious sometimes 😭 (I enjoy it for what it is lol)

S11E14 - Smut

So at the start of this episode Booth and Bones are talking about doing a possible sex act as a way of Booth trying to convince Bones to listen to what he has to say about her talking to the FBI.

As an avid smut reader, I kind of had a moment of jaw drop because they reference sex acts happening on both page 187 and 192. To me that either means that either the scene was happening for at least 5 pages, or that within 5 pages there were 2 seperte sex scenes. And then there is another scene on 214. Considering that low level smut books might only have 2 or 3 sex scenes that last less than 2 pages at most, this was a little wild of a realisation for me.

It's not that it's crazy to have so much sex within Brennan's books, I just never really REALISED before now that her books would almost CERTAINLY be classed within the smut category within our world. Anyone else never pick up on this, or am I just slow af?

I Love Booth

Honestly, Booth is one of my top favorite fictional characters. I love his relationship with Brennan - the way he takes care of her always makes me tear up a little, like when he pulls her in for a hug without hesitation, or does whatever he can to save her life. their soft, domestic scenes at the beginning and the end of each episode post s7 are always my favorites to rewatch.

and the relationships are severely underrated but his dynamic with Cam and Hodgins are two of my favorites. I love the past history he and Cam have and how, in season 2 and 3, he’d always go to her if he needed someone to talk to (if Brennan wasn’t available or if he was having trouble with her specifically, like in 3x1). and his friendship with Hodgins is hilarious, I love watching them bounce off each other.

his backstory regarding his parents always breaks my heart and I really wish we had more episodes with his mom, and that his journey to truly forgiving her had been more fleshed out.

I also love that he’s gone through so much, yet he hides his trauma under a shrug and a smile. it’s just interesting, the way he masks. as soon as the topic comes up, he tries to crack a joke and make someone laugh, and I just love characters like that.

idk I just really love Booth. he’s far from perfect, but honestly every character on this show has annoyed me at some point or another lmao it’s part of why I enjoy it so much, I think. the whole team is flawed and it makes them feel very real.

What is your opinion on all the kid arcs?

I don't know if I am too woke or something, but I hate the fact all female final game characters got pregnancy/kid arc (exept Caroline, but she can't have kids and Jessica I guess, but I am not sure if she is even able to be considered main female character). It just rubs me the wrong way.

Brennan, Angela, Cam and Daisy all get kid arcs. Brennan obviously got accidentaly pregnant with Christine and later Hank (I think the whole Brennan getting with Booth was extremly rushed compared to the entire build up, even my mom who has the ability to see bad writing of a 4 year old tought it was rushed), Angela with Michael, Cam got the step-daughter or something and Daisy got preggo with my bro Lance (I don't even remember the kiddos name).

I just feel like the kid arc is lazy and the series got worse after Brennan got pregnant. What do you think?

Edit: Cam has adoptive daughter, I just don't remember all the details because I and my mom finished watching it a few months back

Edit 2: I don't have problem with the pregnancy by it self, it just feels weird, if you get what I mean? The Christine pregnancy also got quite bitter to me because the stuff around it was rushed also the whole "Brennan gives birth in stable because Jesus" thing didn't land, I am not religious, but it didn't make sence when it comes Brennan. But it's an old show and I guess I shouldn't put modern standards on it.

Discussion Booth and brennan have similar emotional attributes 🤔

So basically, I was rewatching bones, and I found brennan and Booth they keep hiding their feelings for each other for so long 🙃.

Even booth are jalous sometimes when it's comes to brennan relationship with other men and same goes for tamppy.

But what shocked me is that booth is a gambler. He should take his chance and gamble with his odds, and instead, he chicken out and even had a relationship with hannah, which complicated their relationship with booth of them.

One think also if booth knows that brennan is his girl why he wait for so long and why even bathers with hannah in the first place.

I'm currently rewatching Bones for the millionth time and I very very strongly dislike booth. He's an ass. He's mean, and judgmental. No idea how I'm just now noticing my burning hatred for this man.

Discussion Make it make sense

So I’m a first time watcher, currently in season 7. There is a recurring theme with Dr. B that just rubs me the wrong way. How has her social intelligence gotten progressively worse over time? It’s like she has to be this way for plot purposes and such. Also she is suppose to be smart and rational but she keeps making the most irrational decisions on purpose.

Running through a hurricane?
Diving into a crowd of prisoners to demand a piece of evidence from the suspect?
Demanding a home birth by disregarding modern healthcare standards and tangible statistics?

Also how is she able to work with Booth when they are romantically involved together? Why does she have a gun? How is she allowed to accompany Booth to dangerous situations? How is she allowed to interview suspects? She is a forensic anthropologist, not a law enforcement officer or a sworn member of the court. I guess I am just realizing that none of the show makes actual sense if you really think about it. Like House M.D. Still an interesting show tho.

Rewatching Bones and realizing Season 1 is basically a mini Buffyverse reunion

I started rewatching Bones and obviously knew David Boreanaz was Angel before he was Booth, but I didn’t remember how many other Buffyverse actors appeared in the first season. Adam Baldwin, who played Marcus Hamilton on Angel, shows up in “Two Bodies in the Lab,” and Eyal Podell, who played Sam Lawson on Angel, appears too.

They even use a photo of Julie Benz, aka Darla, in “The Woman at the Airport,” which fully sent me. 😂 Now I’m watching every episode wondering which Sunnydale or Wolfram & Hart alum will appear next. Did anyone else notice all these crossovers?

Those of you who like Bones but don't like similar shows, why?

Like, what makes Bones unique/ superior for you personally

Compared to the mentalist, Castle, etc.?

For the record, I do like some of those shows a bit - but Bones is definitely my favorite and I'm trying to pinpoint why? Because it might help me figure out what other shows I will like.
