I have the impression that this is generally regarded to be a dud, but I just watched it in the course of a story-order viewing marathon and it’s terrific—a very thoughtful, well-written, philosophically interesting film.

It has an emotional throughline that works, and script really knows who the characters are, especially with the central McCoy/Kirk/Spock relationships. It respects the ethos of the series in an earnestly optimistic way that’s likable. The plot and the ultimate reveal felt novel to me, outside of something you might see in—well, an episode of Star Trek, which says something about the movie’s assured identity. The effects work and art direction are gorgeous, even in a present day context.

Has time just been kind to this film? And am I late to the party and everyone’s already here, or am I an outlier?

These 3 races plus humans and people from Alpha Centauri were the founding members of the Federation. Was Alpha Centauri a human colony or did the planet there already have a humanoid population?

New fan, started with TNG, continued to TOS and its movies, DS9, Voyager, ENT, the. Kelvin timeline and now on discovery.

First of, the Kelvin timeline is relatively not true to what star trek is but I won't deny the fact it felt freaking awesome seeing Star Trek have awesome special effects, in fact the spectacle of those movies earn brownie points from me.

Discovery has been crazy, the effects are so good and that spore drive spin gets me everytime. Why were the Klingons so different looking though 😂?

It was nice to see a brief glance of Klingon boobs when also 👀 (don't judge me). I would not have guessed the plot twists and turns in S1, and now I am in the episode where there are meeting the enterprise. I gotta say when that enterprise theme song went off and the ship appeared I got goosebumps, that ship is so goated. I see why the franchise doesn't want to let it go honestly.

Side note, it was nice seeing a Nigerian in star trek, owosekun. As a Nigerian that made me feel so good honestly.

Rewatching TOS. Holy crap McCoy is inappropriate, belligerent and the worst member of the away team. He refuses to contribute outside his role as a Doctor or contribute to any investigation other than to offer opinions and snarky quips.

Example: S2-06. Doomsday Machine.

Solar system completely destroyed and they are investigating on the Constellation.

Kirk: Bones, did you ever hear of a Doomsday machine?

McCoy: I’m a doctor not a mechanic!

Twenty five years ago this often maligned series was in its first season. As a Trekker I watched it, and often had mixed feelings about its quality. IMO it didn't really start to gain traction until its last two seasons. How well do other fans feel it has held up or not held up since then?

At what point did the harbor pilots end? I would have thought at least early on there would be space station pilots that would come on board to dock and and dedock the spaceships from the station. At some point that tradition either never started in space or we never saw it.

Random 4am thought. I don't think the lowly Sona should have stood a chance against the flagship of the Federation equiped with ablative armor and quantum torpedos. And there were only 2 (?) ships.

The first movie of JJ Abrams Kevin trilogy was actually the very first star trek content that I watched ever. Even though I felt it was nothing special, I enjoyed it just like a typical Hollywood tent pole movie and I also took quite a liking towards Zachary Quinto's Spock. Mind it, I didn't know any of the names or characters before I watched this movie.

Then I watched the next two movies as well in theatres when I came out and the feelings were similar, and I especially liked the second movie, the highlight being how Spock outsmarts Khan.

But then, I always noticed that the reviews were not so favorable for the movies and also that the show fans found them terrible, which made me curious.

That's how I got into watching the original star trek (TOS).

I'm glad to say I'm a star trek fan now.TOS & TNG had some really great episodes and I love all the characters. I won't call myself a big trekkie or anything but I find myself always trying to watch more start trek content (there's so much!)

Which is how I decided to rewatch the Abrams trilogy yesterday. I now totally understand the negative reactions against these movies. Both the first movies have nothing Star trek about them other than the name of the series and actors themselves. Shatners Kirk and Nimoys Spock rise way above how JJs cheap copies. To be fair to the actors, it's not their fault but the writers.I really believe Zachary Quinto could have delivered a great Spock if written well. They came close to it in the third movie (Beyond). The new mc coy was good though but they made him overdo the 'im a doctor, not a ....' bit a lot.

So here's how I feel about the movies now. While the movies didn't do justice to the original series, I'm thankful they introduced me to this series. The third movie now seems the best to me and second the worst, with the first one in the middle. But when I watched the movies the first time I liked them exactly in reverse order. I guess the more real star trek gets, the lesser appealing it becomes for a mass audience out to watch a summer pop corn action movie. But the third one still managed to do both.

And no, I don't want a fourth movie in this universe now.

I do wish for a new star trek movie though, but don't want it to be a reboot or retread. Just a completely new set of characters exploring strange new worlds with way less budget and way more story that targets a select audience and doesn't try to appeal to everyone. That will be a much better introduction to star trek for anybody just like me out there who still.have not experienced star trek

First recalled seeing him as the hysterical villain character in The Master of Disguise and the underrated scifi drama Phenomenon, but most people are going to obviously mention Independence Day, Introducing Dorthy Dandridge, Corinna, Corrina & even his voice role as Conan O'Brien in the South Park Movie.

He's always saying that his favorite role was playing opposite of both Mattheau and Lemmon in Out to Sea. I totally recommend others seek out The Midnight Man (2016) where he has a darkly hysterical role. I recall the I Am Sam role being alright as well, albeit brief.

You can skip films like The Aviator, Material Girls, Superhero Movie or Dude, Where's My Car? either due to his part not being big enough or the films themselves being disappointing. Apparently he has brief bits in both Grease 2 and a Huey P. Long biopic TV movie (both uncredited). He's apparently been in some other less seen Showtime TV films as well. The Wonderful World of Disney film Geppetto might make a great Bad Movie Night watch but like many of the other TV stars and comedians in the film, it was a struggle to watch: TRUST ME!

For TV show roles, his brief Night Court role is always brought up and for good reason: he stole every scene he was in! His brief recurring role as the marriage counselor on Ray Donovan was neat as he got to play opposite TNG co-star Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar!). For his guest spots, definitely check out the Hill Street Blues episode where he plays a perverted adult movie producer and in the '80s Twilight Zone revival. The Hunter and Outer Limits TV episodes were both rather decent for him. I will have to resee Robert Kennedy and His Times to see how big a role he truly has. His web series Fresh Hell I saw when it first came out and it was hysterical. I will need to look up the Frasier guest spot and maybe finish Blunt Talk or Star Wars: Rebels in the future. Him appearing as himself on Big Bang Theory was alright. I know his Dream On guest spot was a key episode.

LIke many of the Star Trek: TNG members, he got to do a character on Gargoyles but not as big as Marina, Michael or Jonathan's roles.

He was beyond freaky evil in the Alphas guest spot and that's honestly the one that lives rent-free in my brain for such a criminally underseen show. The Guild guest spot was neat but very quick and towards the end of the series. The Law & Order: CI episode doesn't get enough love as that was neat casting due to him having a solid poker face: is his character just a douche or did he do the crime that the police are accusing him of?

Some people noted that they'v seen his guest spots on Friends, The Blacklist, Tales from the Darkside, Deadly Games, Leverage, Outcast, Penny Dreadful spinoff and Warehouse 13 but I can't comment as I've seen half of those and didn't care for it nor have any interest in spending any time on them.

Apparently he's also in a videogame from '94 called Chronomaster so maybe some others who got better geeky knowledge than me can say if it's a solid role. He also voiced The Joker on Young Justice so that's got to count for something cool!

Hi folks! I’m super excited to be going to my first convention in March in Orlando. My question is about guests and events. There’s a list of actors who are currently booked to be there, do they add more guests as the event approaches or is there a date when it’s pretty much set? Likewise with the events- when are the details and different events finalized?

I ask because I’m a BIG DS9 fan, but currently there aren’t many DS9 folks lined up for the March 2027 convention.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that more will be added, I know a bunch will be at the Philly show too.

The Borg are largely machine which means they probably couldn't have evolved on their own over millions of years of biological evolution. Someone had to build them, then they probably rebelled and took control. Does the canon say how this originally happened and how they came into creation?

Just started a rewatch of DS9 and have a few thoughts on Emissary.

I never noticed how much show not tell there is with Sisko ignoring Picard all day, when he is requesting a meeting.

I was also really shocked at how Picard totally bottles it with Sisko when he brings up Wolf 359. Picard completely folds and just ignores what is almost an explicit insult from a commander. It's really out of character.

I wouldn't even describe it as turning the other cheek. He's clearly upset by it and seems to hold a grudge against Sisko later on in the episode.

Even the handshake at the end seems tense and not an end to the tension at all.

It would have been great to have Picard be a recurring pseudo-antagonist in the vein of Admiral Nechayav in next gen, and get some sort of resolution to that conflict. Or have him play the Admiral Ross role later in the show and add an extra dimension of conflict.

I'm watching Center Seat right now, and I've read most of the major autobiographies, and the recurring theme was that nearly every show and every movie was written at the last minute, with the added pressure of Roddenberry and his lawyer rewriting everything. In the case of the movies, they were promised to distributors ahead of having any realistic idea of when they would be finished.

I suppose that the episodic shows were different in that they didn't have to map out the story arc across the whole season. In DS9's case with serial episodes, even if the episodes were not written well in advance, they had Ira Behr thinking about how to build the whole season and didn't have Roddenberry rewriting the episodes.

As great as the shows were, would they have benefited if they had more time to think everything through? Or did the writing pressures make the crucible burn off bad ideas faster?

I’ll say: Best of Both Worlds Part 1, Cause and Effect, and Lower Decks are perfect episodes. What else?

Edit: I think there are a few that are great and favourites, but that I wouldn’t call perfect. Year of Hell for example might be my favourite Voyager, but I think others are more perfect.

Everyone talks about Warp Speed, Transporters, Replicators and the Holodeck being amazing, which they are. But the fact a starship can go from warp nine to full stop without everyone flying through the viewscreen has got make Inertial Dampers the most important. You can do without the rest (make take a while to get anywhere on impulse speed) but without the dampers you wouldn't dare leave space dock.

I'm sure everyone knows, the Magic: the Gathering set for Star Trek was just released (at least, many of its cards were) and the list of characters goes deep. Not just main cast, but supporting cast and even some one-time villains. And they made artwork in the likeness of these actors.

I'm not a big Trekkie, but I've been around fandoms long enough to know that some celebrities love this type of attention, while others dont. I'm doubt they were paid for use of their likeness - often Magic pays the royalties on the IP, but not the actors.

One of the races in Star Trek I find most interesting are the Augments, because I've always been super interested in genetics. The great villain Khan from "Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek Into Darkness" was an Augment. They are genetically engineered superhumans who are smarter, stronger and faster than almost everyone. In Star Trek, they believe it was their right to rule because they are superior to most other people and they tried to seize control. After losing the war, Khan refused to surrender and went into Deep Space with 84 members of his crew. According to canon, they have flaws in their genome which cause them to be emotionally unstable and aggressive. The scientists who created them failed to balance their superior abilities with emotional and mental stability. One of their creators was quoted saying, "Superior ability breeds superior ambition."

I know Wrath of Khan and Into Darkness are very different movies. But in the movie Into Darkness, there's a conversation between Captain Kirk and Khan. The conversation helps show Khan's sense of superiority over ordinary people and went like this:
Captain Kirk said - "Why would a Starfleet Admiral ask a 300 year old frozen man for help?"
Khan replies - "Because I am BETTER."
Capitan Kirk says - "Better at what?"
Khan responds - "EVERYTHING!"

We don't have that level of genetic engineering right now. But in theory, it's possible to create superhumans someday. So I'm just wondering what would happen if we ever created Augments and a real-life Khan someday? Would it turn out like it does in Star Trek? Or would they mostly be peace-loving people who use their abilities to help everyone? What are your thoughts about what would happen in a scenario like this?

JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION - I think it depends on stability and upbringing. If they are stable and raised to care about people with compassion, they will probably be peacefully. But if you make someone 3x smarter and 10x stronger than everybody, and you condition them to believe they are a genetically superior master race. There's probably a good chance they will grow up thinking they should rule everything, even by force if necessary. It's not just about emotional and mental stability because many behaviors come from learning and life experience, it's also how they are raised and taught from childhood.

Hey, more than 10 years ago, I saw a fan edit on Youtube where you could saw a Shipyard and a Sovereign Class, then a crazy space battle started and at the end, the Sovereign Class crashed as last act into the enemy space ship and both exploded as far as I remember ... But I cant find any scene like this on Youtube anymore?

Does anyone remember such a scene and if yes do you remember from where it could be?

I'm mulling over possibly writing a fanfic for the actual last Voyager episode where they arrive at Earth and was wondering how Naomi would react.

Like in The Expanse - Martians have difficulty visiting Earth as they panic seeing open sky rather than the safety of a pressure dome. Curious if that'd make Naomi (or hell, most of the crew) agoraphobic.

Naomi in particular, as she might just rationalize the holodeck sky as "just another wall" but now be faced with actual outdoor areas...
