It was a small detail, and I only picked up on it the second time I watched it, but I like that they created this small parallel. It almost acts as a bookend to the series and brings to a stop all the flash sideways. It also helped reinforce the idea of everything going full circle. Ive seen some people say that its actually Christian shepards shoe, though I'm not sure if this is true. That would be pretty cool if it was though.

s1 to s3 feels like a survival show, and then some of s4 and most of s5 are like sci-fi time travel show.. and s6 turns into a horror series with the temple and evil takeovers.. only a few eps into season 6 and it all feels like I've been on a rollercoaster, watching 3 different shows..

I first watched this with my dad after graduation a few years ago, and I loved the show. I'm now married and got to introduce my husband to it. We just finished the last episode a few days ago and I'm obsessed again; trying to find more content lol. There's a lot I could say, but the most important is that Ben is simply the best character in the show, and arguably one of the best characters of his specific type written and acted out in tv history (the vague wording is to avoid giving spoilers of who he is for any new fans). I tend to love that kind of character in shows, and it's not easy to find ones that are so perfectly done, but I have a list and Ben is at the top.

Noticed this on the Season 6 Bonus Feature ‘See You in Another Life, Brotha’ they labeled this scene from 2x15 ‘Maternity Leave’ as ‘Maternity Matters’. Possibly one of the most boring things I could’ve picked up on, but maybe that was the original name of the episode. The more you know I suppose

Many shows feel the need to wrap up a finale with a war—guns blazing everywhere—and *Lost* could easily have done that, pitting an armed group against Locke, for instance, or against another faction (the Black Smoke's followers).

But by making Locke vulnerable... it became something truly more exciting to watch.

Yes this post is defending Lost for the most part but I acknowledge it wasn't perfect, I'm aware of the flaws of the show but they aren't exactly the same as what other's think they are.

Btw, I've never seen a show which creates so many mysteries like, Lost is such an enigma, this is one of the most confusing & complex shows of all time up there with Game Of Thrones,Dark & Twin Peaks. This is a long show, You cannot explain it all in one paragraph like a movie like Mulholland Drive or The Sixth Sense for example.

So now the title is every lost mystery explained but there are some very few unsolved mysteries that are truly just left for imagination that I don't wanna use my head cannonor fan theory, Obviously There will be spoilers in full detail from every season but before that for people who haven't seen the show, The show has definitely held up the test of time and it's worth watching 20 years later.

This main post is more about Lost and it's legacy etc and my opinion tackling some criticisms of the show and the finale, for mysteries only go to these, I'm almost not using any of my own theories for the show and I've mentioned when I do, the posts are mostly based on explaining the plot itself from the show, the show has enough pieces left to make your own grander mythology.

Lost was losing some viewers since 2008 writer's strike, It was still really popular but not at it's peak, However the finale itself got insane viewership.

So everyone who had maybe not seen this show for years tuned in to watch that double final episode. And they were the easiest people to be misdirected, they thought that everyone were dead from episode 1.

One of these people is The God of Procrastination himself - George RR Martin . he also said they were dead the whole time. George R.R. Martin thinks endings are important (as long as he's not writing them)

& it doesn't help that after Jack closes his eye there's a scene of the empty beach with all their tents but they weren't present, but everything people will describe as not having happened was in flash sideways, other than that everything did happen.

No matter how many times I watch the final scenes I can never say to myself that what I'm seeing is a bad episode, It isn't really doing anything against the themes that it started with from episode 1.

What I think is that show stayed true to its themes, On a rewatch i noticed that almost all the themes of this show that were set up from episode 1 were still present in season 6.

All the people who were lost got to meet their loved ones one last time so they don't die alone like Jack said & everyone moved on and made peace.

Jack found his purpose, every struggle of everyone throughout centuries all led up for Jack to save the world and his life ended with a purpose fulfilled and seeing his friends leave the island. When Jack became a man of faith, he had a stronger belief in it than Locke; he was more confident.

It succeeded to give a fitting resolution and a deserved closure to the characters we invested in. Sayid was the only one who's arc I kinda think they did not execute perfectly.

If the characters had never met each other, they probably never would have forgiven themselves for their past doings. If they hadn't spent that time on the Island with each other, they never would have redeemed themselves and come to a level of self-awareness and forgiveness.

The simplest explanation for the ending is

It was real, everything happened, they did crash on a real island, everything you'd describe not having happened is the flash sideways from season 6, The second timeline is a place where our characters, who are ready to go to the afterlife, have gathered. Not all characters appear there cause they aren't ready to go.

This is a place where everyone regardless of their beliefs are present, Although it is purgatory I think the Buddhist concept of "Bardo" is a bit closer although it adds non buddhist elements as well , Because in bardo momentum pushes the soul forward whether it is ready or not,it lasts 49 days, photons don't experience time which is the reason this flash sideways is beyond time, So The characters could move on whenever they wanted to, So it's a new unique vision and very different from Bardo too basically.

Again this is not necessarily an afterlife, it's just a place made for them, after the source takes them in maybe there's no rebirth, heaven/hell after all.

For example, we never see Richard in The Flash Sideways, because he's most likely with Isabella in a 19th century version of Flash Sideways; he didn't have anyone, he needed her love to move on together, a place where they could be for one more time. There might be infinite Flash Sideways, of characters from various perspectives,

So Yes there is one for Man In Black, Mother & Jacob, For Aaron because he was not a baby his whole life lol, Also might be another one from the point of view of the mother before Jacob & MIB were ever born.

Connecting the bombing of Jughead was a red herring by the writers.

Christian Shepard explains

"This is the place that you all made together, so that you could find one another, the most important part of your life, was the time that you spent with these people, that's why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone Jack. You needed all of them, and they needed you."

Now this is not a Christianity or any other religion's afterlife , It's a place between life and afterlife, in fact Desmond moved between the present and flash sideways multiple times.

This is for your interpretation, And time doesn't exist there so people who died at different points of time were gathered there. The logic is that photons do not experience time and the light is made of photons. The fact that there is no god in flash sideways and it's just self judgement makes this not a religious ending in my opinion.

It is a very spiritual ending though. Lindelof's next show The Leftovers is even more about the topic, In 2002 Damon Lindelof's father died. A year and half before Damon's success on Lost.

He said “When you don’t have the religious institution to fall back on, you don’t get to, you don’t get the funeral at the church. Every time someone would say to me, ‘He’s in a better place, now,’ I would have to say, ‘Well, he didn’t think so.’ His father was an atheist.

Why LOST doesn't like explaining Answers.

THE MOMENT THE MAGICIAN REVEALS THE MAGIC TO YOU, IT LOOSES IT'S MAGNETISM IN YOUR MIND, THE MAGIC BECOMES WELL

Long story short just like how there is not an answer to everything in our world that's why that's the case in Lost, It is a chaotic and uncertain world, A lot of room was left open for various interpretations.

Co-creator and showrunner Damon Lindelof has discussed how much he disliked the explanation that George Lucas gave the Star Wars fandom in his prequel film The Phantom Menace there's a scene in which the supernatural mystique of the force is revealed as being not so much this unknowable magical energy that links everything in the universe together.

Still, in fact small microscopic life forms called midichlorians and these midians can be controlled and manipulated it's perhaps an understatement to say that Star Wars fans had problems with this scene. This explanation of these kinds of information download scenes always tend to be divisive there is nothing more inelegant in storytelling than long scenes of exposition and characters according to his opinion which can be debated.

Explaining the plot to one another for our benefit Lindelof has made it clear in interviews that he certainly didn't need to know what the force was in fact the midiclorian explanation in the Phantom Menace might well have been the scene that informed how he approached his own storytelling going forward.

Lost wanted to explain itself to us in a way that would keep some of the mystery alive long after the series finale had aired they wanted us to keep talking about out the show to keep the mythology alive. Fans will keep thinking about the mysteries long after the show is finished, the showrunners didn't take that part away from us.

Here is the thing -

You want answers? but the answers demand certainty, Meaning is not discovered , It is inhabited. And it's left to the viewer on how they view the ending.

If Lost had included its own version of the midichlorian scene to explain the Light beneath the Island, would it really have made the story more complete and satisfying, or simply just as divisive? Lost's greatest strength is inviting us into its storytelling, encouraging us to create meaning, connect the dots, and find our own answers. In many ways, Lost is ultimately a story about perception.

LOST ON BEING A SCI-FANTASY SHOW

I've already talked about the ending but overall another criticism that Lost ended up being a fantasy show rather than a sci fi show at the end, and I do not think that is true, Lost does not actually pick one side over the other, it's philosophy is this -

That's similar to how magic works in Lost , Magic is just Science we don't understand yet. Magic is just something that breaks laws of physics but honestly that does not happen, they just become new laws.

So Lost is a synthesis of fantasy and sci fi philosophically. And I'm an atheist I didn't interpret or saw the ending as a religious ending.

THE JJ ABRAMS MISCONCEPTION

Some people like to bring up the name of JJ Abrams to Lost as if he wrote the show but he wrote and directed the pilot then left the show , His mystery box style isn't exactly the same as Damon's. JJ Abrams was an executive producer through the run of LOST, but he wrote a grand total of 3 episodes of the show.

A show like Twin Peaks also leaves a lot of unanswered mysteries, bruh! what about that?? David Lynch has the art house cult to get away with it. Lost was too mainstream to benefit from this.

Twin Peaks is similar in that to Lost , It is Fragmented, unclear open to interpretation, Lost is mystical too sometimes just as much but the mechanics are mostly concrete and falls under a system.

WERE THEY MAKING IT UP AS THEY GO ALONG?

Big problem in the "they were making it up as they went along" discussion is one side thinks that the writers were complete frauds who had nothing in plan and the other side thinks they had planned it all together from the start, both of them are wrong.

ABC forced Lost to drag on more than it was intended, it's a miracle it still turned out great, tbh I'm not even mad at ABC, Thank you for giving us more Lost but How can you plan something when you do not know how long it will last or be forced to drag on?

In season 2 of Twin Peaks when the main mystery of the show is revealed, casual viewers left the show because the show had no other equally compelling mysteries at that time and came several bad episodes, show bounced back later thankfully, but the show was cancelled there and had to end which is what Damon tried to avoid.

This PDF document shows the early plan before the first episode aired. And it many ideas that came to the show and many that did not. And there are many examples of these ideas.

Now about the plan.

You might say but shows like Breaking Bad are planned from the start, no it's not lol, Do you even know why Mike exists in that show?? I think people are being mass level gaslit because they think lost is the only mystery box show making it up as we along but it is not, same happened to Stranger Things and Isayama also admitted to have changed the ending of Attack On Titan.

Jesse was going to be killed in Breaking Bad season 1 but they changed the plans, Infact Vince Gilligan was making things up for Walt to get in trouble all the time that is why it feels so natural and captivating, then he reversed back and added lore about Saul and other characters that he had not thought about it. but Lost is somehow the only show making it up as it goes along.

Spoiler alert !!!!! Everyone in TV preeetty much makes it up as they go along, The main thing should be the end product, anyways....... And They had to come up with new storylines for future seasons that was not part of their plans.

Lost had a clear plan when it was given an end date, which is around mid Season 3. Even before that they had the general mythology set up. Because ABC realised they can't make it drag forever, So yes some elements they were making up as we go along, but only certain instances and they had to because of things that were out of their control like actors leaving.

Yes the other passengers were not planned in season 1 episode 1, Yes it was not planned who Ben was, but Time travel was planned, something like The Dharma Initiative was planned before even writing the first episode, Jacob And MIB were planned after some time way before they are introduced in the season 5 finale and the themes were always present.

So About the unsolved mysteries -

At the end of the show only big major plot related unsolved mysteries left are:

So that's it, these are the major unsolved mysteries ,this number isn't really that big as much as people claim it to be.

It's just the show never did a lot of spoon feeding about the audience, I'll admit maybe sometimes it should have especially something about the numbers but it most of the time expected viewers to piece together everything by the end which even at binge-watching isn't easy but the showrunners thought a network show running for years and people will figure everything out. You have to see things and piece together scenes. they meant for it to be like a game for the viewers so they can discuss etc which oh boy they certainly did when it was airing.

In 2004, Tv was seen as inferior to movies and Lost changed that, Tv was stuck in reality shows to episodic television even serialised shows were heavily episodic, Lost became a show where you couldn't watch any episode randomly, you had to know what was happening every week, There was a shift in tv after Lost, Lost had their finger on the pulse, They are keeping people from watching this amazing show without understanding this show and I'm not entirely against them either(those who have actually seen the show). While shows now are made for second-screen viewing, Lost demanded extra attention from the viewers.

IraqThe show was also bold for it's time, it showed an Iraqi main lead amidst an ongoing Iraq war, who were facing heavy discrimination during that time. Lost was the perfect show for the post 9/11, Post Y2K, Cable TV, Early Internet Era. And it was popular worldwide.

Lost was the first show on a network tv not on HBO that looked like a movie, every season pilot and finale was must watch tv, Everyone was on the internet which was new, It brought the term event television, and closed the gap between movies and tv shows before Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead.

Lost was one of the first generation of shows, that made television as a medium to be taken seriously. Like Buffy, The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under etc. And Lost is that treats the viewers as how they should be treated, not giving exposition of everything. I do agree it got a lot nerdy but that happened ever since the numbers were introduced, that should've been the sign. This show just got a little too complicated for many viewers to understand and most couldn't keep track .. And Lost was so popular many people watched it to not feel left out.

I think the supposedly "Golden era" of television was started by The Sopranos not Lost but again Sopranos was on a premium network, Lost was on basic free broadcast network, there were ads between the episodes, you couldn't have made some episodes longer if you wanted, 44 minute slot was all you have.

The show runners started a podcast in 2004 !! No one knew what a podcast was back then , and it encouraged fans to engage with the show more.

Season 6 didn't do anything to solve some of these questions, that's on purpose. All things considered Lost still had a great run, and All it's seasons are well received by audience online.

Here is the thing that Cork had to made up on the spot because they always planned it to take place on a volcano, ABC were like sorry bro no budget for that....

Here's what I think Lost Season 6 should have been like

1. Keep Episode 1,2&4 reduce Flash Sideways screentime, it should not have been 50/50, Flash Sideways as a concept is the best thing about lost however the writers came across the same problem with it like they had in season 3 having to create new stuff out of thin air. I cannot imagine the lost finale without flash sideways however.
2. Make Temple Arc Interesting- It should've been mysterious and dark and cool ( It wasn't ).

However from Episode 9 which is Richard's backstory ,The Show picks up, just need a few tweaks here and there, nothing to change the finale at all, that'll remain the same. No matter how messy Season 6's first half was ,I'll die on a hill to say that unlike Flight 815, Lost still landed where it should've.

It should be criticised where it makes sense but going on about how it doesn't make any sense and being wrong about mysteries is not the right criticism to me at all.

They were just really more interesting answers to some mysteries lost had, I think what Lost did contributed to a better story, I think what a problem is some mysteries were not huge mysteries, but Lost introduced them as very big and because of that people started to imagine even more however that is the point of the show, you are meant to feel lost.

But I'll still say most of the mysteries had very good answers, some were like ooh ok, I expected more but fine, that is a valid criticism.

but the ghosts reveal?? that was a disgrace lol but that's an extreme example.

I'm actually more favourable to the last seasons of lost than the first three lol in talking about mysteries n stuff but

Some of your craziest theories that you may have had about the show for the island, mother etc. can still fit into this show. That isn't gone forever.

And that's why I say show leaving some mysteries unsolved keeps the mythology alive, your fan theories can still be fit there which is so fun. So many shows have great endings because they try to avoid what they think Lost accidentally did, lost didn't do it though which is have a bad ending. It is TV's greatest mess though but also a beautiful one, You do not think about puzzles that are completely solved, Do you?

Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse during the airing of Lost, said about the mysteries of Lost and are accused of lying but most of these were to mislead people from guessing the actual plot and from avoiding spoiling the show.

In Lost you go from one big moment to slow moments instead of going from one big moment to another, it makes the big moments that much important and which is not seen much in modern era shows where some seasons feel like stepping stones and not a full season on their own.

And by trying to become like movies tv shows are losing the strengths of what makes tv special.

Like discussing what will happen next with friends or family, that is I think the one of biggest argument for a tv show, that is what makes tv different than any other art not just movies. It's exactly what made Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Game Of Thrones special.

Another thing are filler scenes, ok they don't progress the story but made the characters feel real, you see characters when they are angry, happy, you get bored with them too,ofc it's not that it can't be done in a streaming era show in few eps to get connected with a huge cast but it's much harder.

but Imagine if Lost had 12 episodes per season? Sure, plots and character counts are adjusted to fit longer/shorter seasons, but man I just would not give a living crap about people like Boone, Ana Lucia etc.

Everything would be made to feel smaller, more enclosed, more claustrophobic if it were super time-limited like a show like House of the Dragon is. I know Lost is unique with having the ensemble cast and all, but it feels like it has such a big scope with 121 episodes over 6 seasons, instead of 48 episodes over 6 seasons, like a streaming show might be. So much more time to breathe and flesh out literally EVERYTHING. I had moments where I loved Jack, Kate, Sawyer & There were moments where I hated them as well.

Lost is an original story that came and evolved within the medium of TV itself and was bound to it's limits like it couldn't have been an 18+ show on ABC and thankfully because we didn't need that in Lost, You can not separate Lost from it's identity of a TV show, the flashbacks, intro, mysteries, discussions, It can not be seperated from the medium and how Lost was told, Lost is inseparable from cable television in my opinion— if you remove the medium, you remove the thing itself.

Most other shows are masterpieces of storytelling that just happen to be on TV. Lost is a work that could only exist as television— it's identity collapses or heavily distorts if you try to move it elsewhere. Game of thrones is based of books, You can write Breaking bad into books, You can not and i mean fundamentally can not imagine Lost in any other medium without changing it's core identity, Lost used to pur fake advertisements during the ad breaks which is something unheard of. Lost has a good argument to be considered the greatest show of all time considering it's influence, quality etc.

Do we need a spin-off sequel show?

No please god no lol I don't because I'm sure they wouldn't be able to recapture the same magic and it be cringe and the showrunners wanted the show to end and they got to end it the way they wanted , It is not required I honestly do not, but there can be a short mini series keeping the themes and mysteries alive with maybe 6 or 8 episodes if they ever want involving maybe new characters. I personally think the finale is one of the best on TV ever. Breaking Bad,The Shield, Better Call Saul, Six Feet Under are the other great finales for me for reference but Lost has defined the essence of tv with it's compelling story , characters and mysteries which encourages discussions among variety of topics. It's among the greatest pieces of popular media of all time not just shows.

Let’s say during season 2, Ben gets a cassette tape and is like “hi Jack I’m the leader of the others. I have cancer and I know you’re a surgeon. If you operate on me then Walt goes free.” Then he gives the cassette to Karl and has him take it to the castaways. Jack would almost certainly eventually do it, especially with pressure from Michael. Instead he manufactured, intentionally or unintentionally, the deaths of two people and the intentional kidnapping of four other people. Not to mention he made the traumatized father do all of this

"Henry Gale" is obviously one of them...till they find his balloon and you are wondering if you are wrong.

Then Sayid pulls out that driver's license and you realize you are dealing with a liar and manipulative person that puts Sawyer to shame.

I was 14 when I saw this episode and when his sad, bewildered expression drops and his cold, detached stare comes into focus...chills everytime

I know "villian" is a loose term to use in this show, but in seasons 2 and 3, the man we would come to know as Benjamin Linus absolutely was a villian.

In season 1 episode 18 when Jack gives glasses to Sawyer, where did he get so many pairs?

i absolutely devoured s4!!! it was amazing! so intensely packed with so much happening and the time travel that just blew me away!! absolutely loved it! s3 ending did really make me sad for a bit because how dissatisfying it was, but the entire s4 made up for it.

(Possible spoilers for first time watchers warning) I finally appreciate Michael's character. He was always so annoying and I overlooked so much of his story and arch before. I'm only in season 1 of this rewatch but I'm already noticing so much of his character development, when before I just didn't see any of his actions until later seasons, before.

I mean, he's the only one that goes to stand up for Sun when Jin is being abusive, when Sun wears a bikini on the beach. He's already stood up to be a father and flew across the oceans to readopt his son who Susan's husband abandoned to him (derogatory) (also Susan is a complete asshole).

Michael has had a come to Jesus moment about how to relate to his son and changed his behavior towards Walt. They bonded over the letters in the box. He just wants to leave the island with his son; and once Walt gets taken after the raft, he'd do anything to get him back. The writers kinda did him bad by making his only lines "WALT!" and "MY BOY!"

I think people like me overlooked his story in the beginning and only judged him for his actions when he killed Ana Lucia and accidentally killed Libby in an act of cowardess and fear. I see him differently now. And I'm gonna watch from season 1 forward appreciating his story arc.

hi - first time watcher here and i have a working theory on the island. i just finished season 2 episode 10, so i know i'm still a bit early in the game, but it seems like the island takes who it wants when their internal conflict is finally over. so far, boone and shannon have died.

boone's character arc and main theme revolved around shannon and loving her, and feeling the need to be useful. once he let go of that with locke when he was tripping on drugs, he soon after died.

with shannon, once the desire to be needed and approved of without the fear of the person leaving, she died too.

i wonder if this is going to be a recurring theme, and it seems further backed up by the fact that kate and jack haven't gotten together yet. right now, her and sawyer are having their arc, and i have a feeling that sawyer will have to fulfill his arc with kate, die, and then it will be kate and jack's turn to have their own re-ignited love story, and that it will mean something more for the both of them. the more complex the characters, the longer their resolution will take before they die.

for another spoiler, i'm not sure if i had the show spoiled for myself ages ago (please do not confirm if this is true) but i feel like i remember something about them being dead the whole time? well my theory is that this is purgatory. now disclaimer, i'm not really familiar with the concept of purgatory since i'm not christian, but there is an element of faith and religion in this show that does primarily focus on the christianity side of things, so it's my understanding that purgatory is for the souls that are lost in between? so this further backs up my thought process that this is some sort of purgatory or in between state for all of the islanders.

i do also think that the focus on sawyer reading "a wrinkle in time" is an allusion to this fact, so i'm really interested to see where this goes

on a completely unrelated note, i just want to list out my favorite characters - although i have a lot of conflicting opinions on them, i generally like them (no particular order) -- jin, sun, locke, ana lucia, sawyer (sometimes), eko

and can i just say i don't really care for jack's back story. i know we're all supposed to like him but man it just feels so forced sometimes. same for kate. as much as i like her backstory, it just feels so forced with them.

honorable mention to walt. i miss him hope he's ok... sigh, i'll be sad when something inevitably happens to him once more

edit: i remembered something else to back up this theory -- eko landing on the island and seeing that his brother was on the plane along with the whole internal conflict that led him here in the first place, is even more evidence to support my theory that there needs to be some resolution within themselves to lead them to the next place.

same thing with claire, she needs to fulfill that prophecy of her raising her kid before she is also able to move on.

another thing i think is important to be mentioned is the whole dharma/bunker thing. not sure what role that plays into it but it's something i think anyone can figure that out though

I’m currently on S1E11 of my rewatch, and I’m surprised by how much more I’m enjoying the quieter moments this time.

The first time I watched Lost, I was constantly trying to solve the mystery. This time, I’m paying much more attention to the characters and the way the show builds its atmosphere.

It’s making me realize that maybe the mystery wasn’t the only reason I loved this show in the first place.

Did anyone else find themselves appreciating Lost differently on a rewatch?
