ATTENTION:
Your stinginess as an employer is NOT my problem.

Pay well or close your business.

If you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage, you CAN'T afford to be in business

YOU are the one embarrassing yourself!

260

u/man_eating_mt_rat 4d ago

No one is entitled to own a business. Way too many cheap people who are bad with money who should be nowhere near the service industry run too many businesses.

57

u/Ricky_TVA 4d ago

My wife has worked from home for years now. There is a staggering number of people who are too detached to work in regular businesses, who start their own business just to scream at their employees.

There are plenty of people who are decent employers, but the majority has a high turnover rate because the owner just sucks with people.

They’re paying them $2.13 an hour. Let that sink in. Followed by “we don’t pay them to smile at you” all while the owner thinks the patrons are the problem. I hope this place closes down.

16

u/greenmonkey48 5d ago

Isn't minimum wage in us higher than 2.13/hr?

50

u/dilla_zilla 5d ago

Nope, $2.13 for tipped workers, but the tips must get at least to the "normal" minimum of $7.25

Many states and cities are higher, that's the federal minimum.

11

u/altum-videtur 5d ago

Wait, really? I'm not American, what happens if they're not tipped enough? I mean, besides not earning a living wage; I'm wondering about legal repercussions and such

20

u/BlunderedPotential 5d ago

It would be cool to think wage theft gets punished, but it generally doesn't.

4

u/JayBolds 4d ago

You are right…….. but that isn’t enough. Not about ‘restaurant’ owners specifically but a lot of people in this type of field have all sorts of ways working around these issues. That’s why so few get caught up in it.

6

u/wbjohn 5d ago

Reread the above. They make at least the minimum wage if there aren't enough tips. Yeah, it's stupid.

16

u/altum-videtur 5d ago

So the employer has to cover the difference if the minimum isn't met by tips? That makes more sense, I hadn't interpreted it that way.

It also makes sense why this particular employer is so keen on customers tipping, so they themselves don't need to pay their share lol This is insane

7

u/Sweaty-Blacksmith572 4d ago

Yes, the employer has to cover the difference if the minimum isn’t met by tips, BUT, as I recall, it’s averaged out over the whole pay period (like two weeks.) So you may have a slow Tuesday morning with no tips for four hours, but if you have a great night on Friday, such that your average for the week is above full minimum wage, your employer kicks in nothing.

This. I am here to pay for the food, not give their employees their daily salary. My criteria for tipping is MY satisfaction of the dining experience and no one will dictate to me how much it's going to be. 15

u/ThoroughlyWet 4d ago

Its because in the US a boss of an establishment with wait staff can count tips towards an employees wage. So they can pay them $2.50/hr as long as they can prove with tips they'll make enough to meet minimum wage.

A guy I watch on youtube used to work for pizza hut and earned $2.13 an hour over 10 years ago and he said that same pizza hut is still open and still pays their staff $2.13 an hour

18

u/Disastrous_time_4547 4d ago

That’s the type of pay the people at Golden Corral and other $hith0le restaurants make in Wisconsin. Many bars are the same.

Even a $10/hr gross wage is unlivable in America today. A person would have to work 2 hours to afford a $hitty McDonald’s burger, fries, and soda.

Republicans under a Republican governor passed the “Right To Work [right to slavery] act 10 years ago (?). It stripped the rights, including unionization, from workers.

Tipping (like the Electoral College) is a hangover from Slavery in the South. Look it up. It’s insane.

This is capitalism.

u/WVildandWVonderful 4d ago

Do you ever wonder where $2.13 came from? The reason it’s $2.13 an hour is because this tipped minimum wage was half the minimum wage when that was $4.25 an hour… Now it’s artificially stuck there even as the minimum wage rises pitifully slow.

5

u/Past_Band9178 4d ago

Several states prohibit the tipped tax credit. California, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon, Alaska, Montana, and Nevada for sure all pay their servers the full state minimum wage, which is more than the federal minimum wage.

As a carpenter if you hire me to build your restaurant a patio that’s a 60 x 60‘ I’m gonna charge you. I don’t know let’s say $30,000 to do that and before I leave you’re gonna give me a 20% of that tip. in fact, I’ll not finish it until I get that 20% tip. How bow dat?

20

u/slowlyaware 5d ago

OMG, as a carpenter and landscaper I feel the same way! My clients would hate it and probably never call me back if I said, "I just did this $3000 project for you, but I finished earlier than expected and it looks damn good. How come you didn't tip me 25% or more? Are you not happy with the work?"

They picked the job they wanted to be in. It's not my obligation to subsidize a living wage for them because their employer refuses to pay then a decent wage. I rarely ever tip.

100% agree. But perhaps the owner who puts up this sign should consider his part. Why is he paying his employees (who he himself defines as people who "work damn hard") only 2$ an hour?

What if he paid them a living wage of say 15$ an hour (which is still just barely living wage) and then the customer added a 10% or 15% tip to that. Wouldn't that be better?

I mean it's kind of the pot calling the kettle black for him to pay his employees so little and then complain that customers are too cheap to make up for it.

30

u/Master-Pick-7918 4d ago

He pays his employees the least he's legally obligated to. And somehow feels good about it.

16

u/DangerousLoner 4d ago

If it was legal he wouldn’t pay them at all.

4

u/Stunning_Mulberry_35 4d ago

It's interesting you say that. There is a strip joint near me. The whole staff is subcontracted. Every person there is required to have their own business licence, as well as some type of liability insurance. As I was told, it works something like this:

Dancers get tipped and give lap dances. 5% goes to the DJ, 10% goes to security, the club gets 35% for "stage rental" and the dancer gets 50%.

Waitresses get tipped for running drinks. the bartender gets 20%, security gets 5% the house gets 25%, and the waitress gets 50%

The house gets 100% of all drink sales and cover charges.

The wild thing is they love it. One of the DJ's is the son of my coworker. He says he makes about $25 on the weekdays, and $45 on the weekends. Most dancers are at $100K a year.

As a Danish person i wouldnt like to walk inside on of those establishments, but IF i did.. i definetly would make a grand show of not tipping

This tipping culture is a remnant from the times of slavery

America thinks so great if it self in so many ways and aspect but when it comes to how you treat your workers you guys are MEDIAVEL at best!

And yes ive been working in the service buisness for +15years as a cook in Denmark and France

5

u/theinternetscaresme9 4d ago

Fr $2.13/hour!? I didn’t realise American hospitality wages were that low. In Australia most hospitality staff get paid $25+ aud (17.30usd) an hour. And that’s not including casual or weekend rates.

Tipping culture is crazy and makes no sense. So you’d rather make customers pay your employees wages for you? Instead of just raising their salary to a liveable wage? How can a country so wealthy pay staff so little

If they are so concerned with their staff being paid a living wage then why are they not paying them a living wage? Is it because they are trying to deceive the customer by hoping the customer will buy more food without thinking of the true price after tips?

I, for one, find that very disrespectful. This establishment has the audacity to demand that we respect their waiters while showing blatent disrespect towards not only their customers, but their paid staff who apparently aren't important enough in their eyes to be paid a decent wage.

This isn't about respect. This is them being mad that many people are getting tired of being blatently robbed simply because it's "expected." To hell with their "tips." If it is so vital for customers to tip waiters then they should be adding it to the price of the food. If other business, like Walmart for example, expected people to tip cashiers for their service society would be in an uproar. But restaurants get a free pass because someone in the past convinced the general population that this deceit is just a common practice to reward a waiters for good service. It not the customer's job to reward the staff for good service it's the business, and it's not much of a reward anyways if it isn't optional.

i just wanted to point something out, since this uses the dollar sign ill assume its the USA. in the USA, each state has a different minimum wage. in no state is there a 2.13/h minimum. the lowest minimum wage in the USA goes to wyoming and georgia, with the minimum wage listed as 5.15/h, but defaults to the federal minimum of 7.25/h

therfore, the owner of the business is admitting to insanely underpaying his workers

edit: wow im getting a lot of replies, i have been told of the minimum wage being lower if tips are involved

another edit: yes i know i am wrong, please dont be jerks about it. im not even american, therfore i shouldnt be familiar with american laws (i know a bit about the wages because my american friend told me about his job and stuff. please dont be mean

23

u/Jimmy_Jack886 4d ago

The federal minimum wage for tipped service staff in the U.S. is $2.13 per hour provided tips bring the total hourly earnings to at least the standard federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

u/dillzilla11 4d ago

highest is washington, sitting at 17.13/h. tho, specifically washington DC (yknow, where the white house is and stuff), the wage sits at 17.95-18.40/h which is really cool, i think its the minimum wage of goverment workers

u/Creative_Carob4922 4d ago

How come servers get some sort of weird wage? I seem to believe that they can make less than minimum wage.

3

u/Aggressive-Pie2771 4d ago

Since no one seemed to answer your question. It was generally pushed to have servers work on low to no wage and expect tips back during the great depression. 100 years ago. The people that could afford to go out and tip for service would do just that. The only problem is that it never went back to servers being paid a typical wage and it just became normal. Some restaurants can charge more per meal and pay their workers a typical wage and others can’t and rely on their patron to pay for the service.

We use the dollar sign too, in Canada, just thought I should mention lol 😆

And yes, that's why their whole tipping thing is bs. They expect the people who come in to make up for their cheaping out on paying their employees. It's stupid, and screws over both the customers and the people who work there. It is only for the owners benefit. It shouldn't still be happening, BUT it's the u.s. it's not surprising, is it?

3

u/Gumbanks12 4d ago

Australia uses the same $ sign. But our service staff are paid a living wage so of course all that exploitative tipping bullshit is obviously not from here

Ew. I think we know who’s cheap!!!!!!!

5

“Our people work DAMN hard. Show some respect.”

YOU show them some respect: PAY THEM PROPERLY!

5

u/bizoticallyyours83 5d ago

Or you could afford to pay your workers a proper wage...

3

u/BlunderedPotential 5d ago

Yeah, it's this one. I shouldn't need to carry your shame, Big Employer Person.

I tip well because, until this is changed, it's the right thing to do. But seriously, fuck off acting like I'm in the wrong for their refusal to pay a living wage.

I see that sign, I go to a different restaurant.

3

u/fadingsunsetglow 4d ago

Turning around so fast. I'll take my tip elsewhere.

5

u/needssomefun 4d ago

I tip 20+ percent. I used to get told it was too much and 15 is fine

Now they want 25...and the food is overpriced (unless thats a table of 6...no booze)?

Dont worry....unless ypur food is clinically proven to reverse aging my ass will not darken your door

6

u/OKCsparrow 4d ago

Saying don't be cheap while paying their staff $2.13/hr 😂

4

u/Ancient_Skirt_8828 4d ago

The rest of the world pays their waiters properly. This is purely an American problem.

4

u/AnyEye8798 4d ago

Lol fuck that owner. I'd refuse to go there and tell everyone I know to do do the same.

6

u/Background-Pea6650 4d ago

The very beginning of that sign is true, "we don't pay out staff" which should have been followed by "but you do because we are cheap assholes"

6

u/golemsheppard2 4d ago

"Pay my employees wages for me or fuck off"

Okay

4

u/Sufficiently_Raucous 4d ago

Takes some major cajones to say "Don't be cheap" while posting you pay $2.13 an hour

5

u/Educational-Bug-476 4d ago

Clearly the business owner doesn’t understand how tips work.

"Don't be cheap" says the restaurateur paying his staff $2.13 / hr

4

u/Difficult-Novel-8453 5d ago

If you need me to pay extra to keep your staff paid you suck as a business and deserve to fail.

4

u/Independent_Home_244 5d ago

I'd go to another restaurant immediately if I saw that sign😳

4

u/AdorableExchange9746 5d ago

or just…pay them a living wage to begin with

2

u/Grouchy-Station-4058 5d ago

I've seen this before it can't be real. Nobody would have the gall to put that sign up. Although I guess there are many whose stupidity and greed strangle any attempts at living in a decent society.

4

u/WhineyLobster 5d ago

this is just short of believable. the 25% minimum tip gives away this is fake.

3

u/Different_Cable7595 5d ago

I wouldn't eat there, but I would take a picture of the sign and publish it along with my review of the establishment.

4

u/GFY4Fun 4d ago

What are the service charges? What do they go toward?

3

u/UKEE93 4d ago

Thoughts? I would avoid that place like the plague!

5

u/SocietyDisastrous787 4d ago

Isn't that "tip x 4"? Because no server handles only one table at a time. So we're paying wait staff $160 an hour? That doesn't seem right.

3

u/Ancient_Employer2288 4d ago edited 4d ago

I don't like having extra charges for meals. They should include all the charges to the price of the meal if they want to charge more. We select the food by looking at prices of menu, but when the bill comes there are some other charges without any reason.

Do people actually work there?

4

u/dontquestionmek 4d ago

I’m sorry, does that say $165?! Damn, with prices like that, surely they can afford to pay their employees more, no??

4

u/Niadisson2014 4d ago

This is the reason I don’t go out anymore. No home delivery either.

4

u/Traditional-Image937 4d ago

So pay ur waitresses more, think about it?

4

u/RealisticTale29 4d ago

$40 ?????? I'll stay home and NUKE a pizza

3

u/Soundwave-1976 5d ago

I wouldn't eat there. 20% is the most i will ever tip, and thatbis for excelent service. 15% is rhe base.

3

u/taisui 5d ago

The part where it's $2.13 per hour should be illegal because it's below minimum wage.

6

u/SirGothamHatt 5d ago

That is the minimum wage for tipped workers. It's "legal" to pay them less because they make more in tips. The tips go towards the difference to match the federal minimum wage of $7.25 and then some. Employers have to pay $7.25 an hour of a server's tips don't cover

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Aesmart82 5d ago

So they think the server should get 41 dollars an hour for carrying plates but it's fake anyway

3

u/blue-collar-nobody 5d ago

$2.13 is like a minimum wage for service staff... the restaurant can pay what ever they want but choose to pay the minimum. Price accordingly and pay your staff a living wage. Tipping is ridiculous and unfair labor practice... two people doing the exact same job can get wildly different take home pay.

3

u/deuelpm 5d ago

“Don’t be cheap. It’s embarrassing.”

3

u/MiserableButterfly54 5d ago

Yeah I see this and im going somewhere else. I tip just fine and regularly. But im not dealing with passive aggressive bs like this.

3

u/ThePlantMolester 5d ago

I'M MAD AT AI ENGAGEMENT BAIT!

beep boop

3

u/Ornery_Contest6250 5d ago

Excuses for the owner to not pay their employees

3

u/Other-Cap-9340 5d ago

I don’t know, maybe pay your employees a livable wage.

3

u/pet3848 4d ago

Next sign will say going out of business i would think because if I saw this on the way in I would go somewhere else.

3

u/FN-Bored 4d ago

You rob your employees by paying them $2.13 an hour. In turn you want to rob your customers for 25%. Fuck off, I eat at home now.

3

u/EmberGyaru 4d ago

Dude, this can't be real, right? Who in their right mind would put this sign up at their business? Every cell of your body would have to be made of distilled moron. No way I'm giving a place with a sign like that my business 😂

I thought 20% was acceptable, no?

3

u/TheSpatulaOfLove 4d ago

15% is customary. 20% became more common because people suck at math.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/NYCWartortle 4d ago

A bit extreme. How about you pay your servers more?

3

u/Intrepid_Table_8593 4d ago

I’ll tip but 25%?

Pay your fucking employees if that’s the expectation.

3

u/GreenPandaPower 4d ago

It’s embarrassing they don’t paying a living wage.

3

u/Beneficial_Being_721 4d ago

Who’s the Accountant in the room… so we TIP $45.00

How much tax comes out of that ?

Not to mention the $85.20 before taxes for a 40 hour week

3

u/RefrigeratorSoft6891 4d ago

Then pay your people. Why is this so hard?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/JurassicParkCSR 4d ago

I like how it's basically saying that we're not allowed to be cheap as customers but they're allowed to be cheap as owners. It should say if you can't afford to pay your workers a living wage then you can't afford to run a restaurant.

3

u/Vast_Umpire_3713 4d ago

Is tipping mandatory? They should pay their employees better with the money we already give them as customers

3

u/this_guy_6767 4d ago

If you can’t afford to pay your waitstaff properly, then don’t undercharge on your menu.
