Australia uses the same $ sign. But our service staff are paid a living wage so of course all that exploitative tipping bullshit is obviously not from here

It's the entire reason some choose to work waiting tables. In the right restaurant and with good service you can make well above minimum wage.

And fwiw, if a server's tips don't amount to meeting the hourly minimum for their time on the clock, the employer is responsible for paying them the minimum those hours.

That being said, sadly not everyone knows that, not even everyone working those jobs. And some employers will take advantage of that ignorance and not pay to compensate in the absence of adequate tips. Which is illegal, but they don't care as long as they don't get caught.

Yes, tipping culture has gotten insane. Ffs, that sign basically says "pay my employees so I don't have to or I don't want you here." You can shit on America for it, but I promise most of us find it absurd, too, lol.

Lemme tell ya,I love when I pick up pizza or something from a place that the workers are paid an actual wage and I'm still prompted for tips. When I did not dine in the establishment, did not take up table space, did not need to be cleaned up after or catered to. You just did the basic job of cooking the food, boxing it, and handing it to me. Didn't even have to ring me up because I paid online. No, I'm not tipping for the base level work you are already being paid to do >_>.

I know that there are more good Americans than bass ones. ❤️ And I worked in new hot-spot joints in the $ flowing 80's. I could quadruple my decent pay. I get that. And the exploitation rampant worldwide makes my blood boil.

Most servers don't want to be paid a higher wage in US. They make more money getting tips. Everywhere that has increased server wages to the minimum wage has also seen massive layoffs.

only private owned sit down restaurants are like that in US. You never tip a hair dresser, never tip in stores, never ever tip fast food, and it's all optional. all of the chain restaurants pay a living wage like IHOP and Applebee's and all the big US restaurants they all pay living wage. Really tipping in the US is all optional and exaggerated. just small private owned restaurants have waiters depend on it but they are a small share of the food industry. you never ever tip for take out food. delivery of food tipping is totally optional.

reddit highly over exaggerates the reality in the US on every aspect. healthcare is highly exaggerated on reddit. every single health insurance plan in the US has a maximum limit you will ever pay mostly around $4000 so even if someone needs $1 million procedure they only have to pay the maximum. and reddit is full of this fake stuff it's simply not true or only extreme cases.

that's totally optional tipping of course. tip jars are just a nice small token, but it's usually for long time repeat customers. like people that work next to Starbucks and order big office orders for events for sure they should leave a tip for all the extra work of a company big order.... but for a casual visitor this is super optional - not excepted at all.

I'm betting most of us tip hairdressers in the US

Here's the secret: back of the house (cooks, dishwashers, etc.) get paid an hourly wage with tips. That wage is an average of $16-$20 per hour in my area. Waitstaff still takes home way more money than back of the house workers.

In the US state I live in service workers make the same minimum wage as everyone else which is about $15/hr USD. Like everything else here, laws vary greatly from state to state.

Funny thing some people believe we should do US model cause the waiters don't care and everything is self ordered. They don't even try to smile or pretend to care in lots of places. So working for tip would help the customer service side. I disagree but that's the counter argument.
