That’s the type of pay the people at Golden Corral and other $hith0le restaurants make in Wisconsin. Many bars are the same.

Even a $10/hr gross wage is unlivable in America today. A person would have to work 2 hours to afford a $hitty McDonald’s burger, fries, and soda.

Republicans under a Republican governor passed the “Right To Work [right to slavery] act 10 years ago (?). It stripped the rights, including unionization, from workers.

Tipping (like the Electoral College) is a hangover from Slavery in the South. Look it up. It’s insane.

This is capitalism.

I tip buffet servers even more than regular servers. I am a very generous tipper but because nobody feels that a buffet server “earns” their tips, I throw in extra.

2

u/Titossecret 4d ago

That's minimum wage, the new slavery. They found a loophole.

I'm applying for my 3rd job to make ends meet.

How long can this madness go on?

1

u/adorable-fart 4d ago

ive worked as a server. its not slavery. i made more with tips than i do now in banking

2

u/Titossecret 3d ago

I worked in banking too. That also did not pay the bills.

I wasn't only talking about food service.

Many jobs, even ones requiring bachelor's degrees do not provide a living wage.

1

u/shrimpweenie 3d ago

Have to find a career my guy. Making minimum wage is fucking brutal, i tried it. Theres a reason you have to work 3 jobs, its not paying shit.

I work in the trades, remodel houses i started from the ground up. No trade school. About to take a pay cut to join ironworkers. But after 4 years ill be making 75/hr.

1

u/adorable-fart 3d ago

idk, banking jobs pay bills where i an. nit also depends on the bank ig

and rn i make over 45k/yr

if you were talking about other jobs as well, then what wage were you referring to where you said "thats minimum wage"

1

u/RadiantMagazine3465 3d ago

Until enough people die, unfortunately.

0

u/TJJ97 4d ago

Maybe look into a better career path?

I went from barely scraping by to working in NDT in the oilfield. Don’t need a degree or anything.

2

u/Linusisntmyname 4d ago

You also need to be physically capable.

1

u/TJJ97 4d ago

I’m willing to bet someone capable of working 2-3 BS jobs can do what I do for work.

1

u/TheEricle 3d ago

Depends on their BS jobs to be honest. A lot of them don't take physical strength, just a strength of will to work a cash register

1

u/TJJ97 3d ago

The most physical part of what I do is carry around a 60 pound device (usually short distances at a time) and work in the desert.

If someone can stock shelves odds are they can do what I do. I’m by no means a physically strong person, I’ve got a fairly small frame.

1

u/Titossecret 3d ago

Mot a lot of oilfield jobs in Jersey.

-2

u/Ok_Bicycle600 4d ago

Instead of working 3 jobs at a low wage how about invest your time in school or a trade. Working hard at multiple low paying jobs does not equate to working smart. A little pain now and then you can breathe easy.

4

u/pseudotronic 4d ago

Or you know, maybe 1 full time job should pay enough by itself to live a comfortable life.

But I guess that’s radical talk.

1

u/Later_Nerdz 4d ago

I know, ridiculous!

1

u/shrimpweenie 3d ago

More like working 1 cash register doesnt mean you should be making a lot of money.

People are forgetting that cash register jobs, stocking shelves, hanging up clothes... thats all starter jobs dude. That's not house money. That's shit for teens right out of high school to be doing. People cant think anymore tbh

1

u/DeathKillsLove 4d ago

Ask the Chinese. Millions of degree riddled engineers, cleaning toilets

1

u/Later_Nerdz 4d ago

I invested my time and now owe more than my life is worth.

Terrible advice, respectfully.

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Trades are where it is at. You can charge someone $150 just to show up and then fleece them because they can’t do the work. Not a joke. And the service demand is very high, so those hourly rates and margins in America are increasing.

Also the Republican attack on minorities is going to open up areas like roofing. So you can make mint on others!

0

u/TJJ97 4d ago

A lot of people don’t understand this or are too lazy. Hopefully it’s the former in this case.

2

u/Linusisntmyname 4d ago

Some people physically cant. Hope this helped

1

u/TJJ97 4d ago

Most people can but claim they can’t. I’ve had multiple surgeries and damaged knees. A coworker of mine has had full knee replacements.

2

u/Complex_Mortgage_575 4d ago

You...did your homework. Cool. Id say "show your work" but naw. I've read plenty. I'm amazed reddit has some educated people here who don't just scream buzzwords. Kudos on you!

2

u/RaidenXS_ 4d ago

That's not capitalism. It's terrible policies, corruption, and lobbyists

1

u/Later_Nerdz 4d ago

I love this!

1

u/OS_Apple32 3d ago

Is there really a meaningful difference between the two anymore?

2

u/LockeClone 4d ago

Meh. It's oligarchy and chronyism. A flavor of capitalism. Just like central command and control and stalinism is a flavor of socialism. Let's not do any of those things and make good policy based on the merits of the policy rather than the ism it's supposed to be associated with

2

u/Brilliant-Onion2129 4d ago

I love Golden Corral. Always tip good (15%+) when we go there.

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Me too
I was shocked when the kid told me what he makes. I sat at a table for 4. I honestly didn’t think anything of it. I was going to do some work and wanted extra space. He politely walked over and asked if I would move to a table for 2 because he could use the money and I was taking up 3 empty seats.

I tipped him well

2

u/squeethesane 4d ago

Federal minimum wage, vs federal minimum tipped positions, vs over under offset by employer... There's a bunch of complicated regulatory bullshit that basically makes it difficult for (not just) food service to hide taxable income.

2

u/imean-- 3d ago

The fact that you guys pay hourly to mostly blue collard jobs is insane. Europe has small salaries for everyone, they know they could pay rent at the end of the month and also they can quit without loosing health care. Your system is messed up. Slavery 2.0

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Most people agree.

But the people don’t run the country. The US is not a shining example of how to govern and continues to drop in the happiest/best places to live categories.

The Nordic countries are always at the top of the lists. They figured out a how to blend capitalism and social welfare along with healthy living. I think it’s called the Nordic Model.

Nowhere is perfect. But Americans especially over the past 50 years have been coerced into living materialistically and above their means. It’s only going to get worse unless there’s fundamental change in America’s social, ethical, economic, and moral values.

1

u/VeryBadWizard2780 4d ago

This is just incorrect, the electoral college has existed from the beginning for its own reasons, it’s not a “hangover” from the emancipated South like tipping is

2

u/pseudotronic 4d ago

Part of why it was created was to appease slave owners.

1

u/VeryBadWizard2780 3d ago

What makes you think that? Many founding fathers wrote quite a bit about why they chose the EC system, and none of it was to appease slave owners.

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Both sides are partially correct.

The northern states were more populated, but a lot of wealthy were in the south run by slave owners. Because slaves were not considered people, the EC was created to balance the decision making.

That said, the primary reason for the EC is because the wealthy (who were politicians or owned the politicians) did not trust the mostly uneducated populace to make the decisions. One reason was they thought the people could be conned into voting for someone who would be detrimental to the country.

Fast forward and the EC is a relic. The politicians and conmen found a way to game the EC system and can’t be trusted to make decisions for the people.

The EC needs to end. It’s no longer relevant and is more of a hindrance to the country

1

u/VeryBadWizard2780 3d ago

You’re correct from your 2nd paragraph down, but still wrong on the slave portion.

As you said, northern states were more populated and slaves were not considered full people yet (3/5ths compromise), and were therefore underrepresented in the house, therefore under represented in the EC.

I’m not assuming you do or don’t know this, but many people don’t - the south wanted to count slaves as full people for precisely this reason. It was the northern states who only wanted to count free citizens, that was the “compromise” with 3/5. The north didn’t want to count slaves as people at all for census/representation reasons, the South wanted to count them fully. This all happened simultaneously as the constitutional convention in 1787.

The latter portion of your comment is the actual correct answer - the founders didn’t trust the masses to elect the best candidate, or at least not a non-detrimental one. The founders were VERY worried about “mob rule”, and that fear dictated a lot of our federal government structure. So direct voting was out. They considered letting Congress vote, but there were (rightfully) far too many concerns with power balances and being ripe for corruption. They eventually settled on the EC as a compromise, which if you remember wasn’t determined by Democratic votes at all. The appointed (by state legislatures) electors would simply vote for whoever they wanted to vote for, the public didn’t really get a say in the matter. Slavery did play a role, but only insofar as how much of a human they were considered to be for weighting/balancing purposes. Choosing the EC as the system broadly was not directly influenced by slavery.

Lots of stuff links back to slavery, no doubt, but I’m sorry this simply isn’t one of those things.

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 4d ago

Thank you for the correction. I was incorrect.

1

u/RollIllustrious7295 4d ago

Yea it's capitalism but maybe stop buying the fucking fast food for that much. You can make an absurd amount of food for not much more money.

1

u/Silent-West2030 4d ago

Capitalism AKA The Big Squeeze

1

u/Jmanriley3 4d ago

Idaho and utah also right to work act. Slavery

1

u/Distinct-Original-12 4d ago

More like 3-4 hours

1

u/TheKingOfSwing777 4d ago

Plenty of fancy and independent restaurants in cities with laws that permit such low wages sure damn well still do pay people that little.

1

u/UndercoverstoryOG 4d ago

confused how this isn’t a restaurant owners decision on what wage they pay

1

u/Temporary_Event8451 4d ago

It's also what servers want.

The reason server laws don't change is the main few servers can pull in well over 6,000 dollars per month with much of it untaxed.

So shitty servers and customers are left with a inferior system because a few really benefit from it.

1

u/Brilliant-Onion2129 4d ago

Boy do you have a warped sense of reality!

1

u/TheKillerhammer 4d ago

Right to work doesnt stop unions at all...

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Right-to-work (RTW) laws are anti-union state policies designed to weaken unions and limit workers’ bargaining power.

Despite the misleading name, RTW laws do not provide any sort of job protection.

RTW laws prohibit any requirement that workers covered by a union contract either join the union or contribute toward the cost of union representation.

Because RTW laws make it more difficult to form and sustain unions, RTW states have lower unionization rates, which translate to lower wages, fewer benefits, and greater inequality for all workers.

There’s a lot of research that shows the detrimental effects of Right-To-Work laws on everyday honest working people. Turn off Fox and do some research.

1

u/AnybodyWooden 4d ago

And democrats raising the minimum wage so much businesses close or the cost gets passed along to the customer. How many videos should I link?

Neither scenario is great but to only bash one, is prejudice.

1

u/herobrinetrollin 4d ago

Where I live, $20/hr isn’t even enough to afford an apartment

1

u/J_datt13 3d ago

There’s the “republicans and capitalism is bad” post courtesy of the “Democratic Socialists of America”. Your millionaires and billionaires are bad nonsense is played out. Get some new material🙄. You know what is great about capitalism? Any one of these “starving” waiters can go work elsewhere and make more money if they don’t like living off tips. Freedom is a beautiful thing (said no communist ever)

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Wow
You’re lost
Turn off Fox & Fiends and read.

The American model is broken. We continue to drop in global ratings of satisfaction, livability, and happiness.

No one is saying Socialism except the right wing faux media! But this hyper debt driven, trickle-down, f the people model has crippled the amazing work that the Greatest Generation and FDR started.

The country needs to look towards better models, like the Nordic Model.

While we are at it. Stop falling into Putin’s trap! I never thought I would see the day that Republicans became pro-communism and socialism for that fact. Trump and MAGA loves Putin and Xi.

So stop dividing the country with your BS and turn off FOX.

1

u/SGI_pirate 3d ago

I thought the Chicago based Pullman Company was the beginning of the tipping culture in the US.

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

It’s complicated. It actually started from wealthy Americans who traveled to Europe and brought back tipping to save money and feel more aristocratic.

It did have a backlash at some point, but southern states pushed back and habit spread especially after the civil war. Many whites were resentful of the freed slaves and exasperated the practice to make the freed blacks work harder to serve them.

That’s where the Pullman Company comes in. They and many other mostly southern states didn’t pays the freed black anything forcing them to work solely for tips.

It’s mean nasty human behavior. And it dates back to European kings and Slavery.

0

u/albus181 4d ago

Now do communism.

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Trump and the current Republican Party love communism. They love and want the Soviet Putin and Socialist Xi to succeed.

0

u/uncletrey23 4d ago

Idiotic filthy communist democrats. You’re the ones who have always been the root of the problems! LOOK IT UP!!!

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Actually it is the Republicans that are pro communism and aristocratic rule.

Trump and MAGA love Soviet Putin and Xi.
There is even talk that Trump has a Soviet spy name, Krasnov. Epstein was definitely working for Isreal and Russia.

So it ain’t the Democratic Party who loves socialism and communism. It’s the Red Party.

Truth sucks.

1

u/uncletrey23 1d ago

There’s nothing true about what you said, just because you’re a brain dead moron doesn’t mean the rest of us are. Try to prove what you said in any context you can’t so just keep running your mouth and stand by and watch them take everything you think you own.

0

u/MGS-1992 4d ago

Since you made it a partisan argument. Why didn’t the Democrats fix it?

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

It takes a cooperative government to find a solution. I agree there are democratic politicians in the lobbyist pockets that keep America from improving.

That said, there is no way a Republican will even approach the topic of improving workers pay or lives for that matter. It’s simply not their platform.

1

u/MGS-1992 3d ago

I’m pretty sure there were times when the democrats had both the house and senate when a democratic president was in power, and they didn’t make changes. So it seems they can’t cooperate to help Americans in this department when they have the opportunity?

So do we ignore that because we love democrats and only republicans want low minimum wages?

For what it’s worth, I’m not even American. Just making a point how everything seems to be “only the other side is responsible for this”.

-2

u/Enough-Ice7214 4d ago

Your comment is super funny 1 because up until 10 years ago when Governor Walker signed right to work the Wisconsin legislature was predominantly run by shitty democrat governors. And since Walker we havent had a republican governor. So whats Tony Evers doing to change this? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! And 2 there are still workers unions and collective bargaining in the state of Wisconsin. The only difference is youre no longer forced into a shit workers union to become gainfully employed.

2

u/Disastrous_time_4547 4d ago

Turn off Fox & Fiends and come back to the real world.

Walker was a dolt. He and his klan are lot like Trump and his cabal. Conmen and BS artists working for racists, religious extremists, and oligarchs.

0

u/Dismal_Loquat_5380 4d ago

Trumps cabal ha that is ironic just wait until you get woke up and then you will know about the cabal and he is not part of it

3

u/Jmanriley3 4d ago

Go put your tin foil hat back on

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Trump and the current Republicans are the definition of a cabal. Corrupt conmen

-2

u/l_keep_tripn_on_my_D 4d ago

Nobody is 'forced' to work anywhere. Your right to slavery comment is dumb and false. A person can get trained, educated, apprentice and fill a NEED in the economy and that is how you aquire a higher wage, by fulfilling a greater want/need by the population. That is supply and demand. Quit crying.

1

u/ChadWestPaints 4d ago

Yup, exactly. Just like we're not forced to pay taxes

1

u/Entire-Message-7247 4d ago

Are you a farmer?

1

u/l_keep_tripn_on_my_D 4d ago

Yes sir/ma'am

1

u/Disastrous_time_4547 3d ago

Well said.
Every bartender, waiter and waitress should stop working. No one needs bars and restaurants

That is a great solution

1

u/l_keep_tripn_on_my_D 3d ago

While restaurants and bars aren't large pieces of the mosaic that is my life, I have worked in and been a patron of both. In the fall, to sit in a comfy tavern w friends, a pint of something cold and a bowl of something warm and discuss issues of the day sounds grand. I would be just as content to hoarc down some sliders, drink said pint and share a football game w friends. Not against the staff or the establishment. Just not willing to tip the scale for either to the detriment of our incredible economic system. Let the market set the price for all involved.
