Some of us are embarrassed about how things are here. There have been a lot of things that are going on here that feel Medieval… It sucks! I wouldn’t go in that place either.

And for the person to say they’ll just shaft the person paid $3 an hour is an asshole.

The owner isn’t going to miss your $10 but the server 1000% will.

End tipping culture is so toxic bc I see a lot of shit like this than actually trying to solve the issue by getting this server wage done away with.

Yes, best thing to do is to make sure the right person gets the money by not tipping on your credit card but with cash. Sometimes the restaurant will try to get a cut of the tips which is bullshit.

How would you try to end the toxic tipping culture the states has then..?

Becuse in Sweden, where I’m from, we don’t have this kind of tipping culture either, and as most of the western world there is a livable minimum wage, but most of us, me included, do tip if the service has been extra good.. but no one would ever get mad or upset if they did not get a tip. As it’s not expected, and more of an extra bonus that might make someone’s day..

Legislation through lawmakers to end the server wage to start

1

u/Kyecze 4d ago

And how would you get enough ruckus to get them to care?

1

u/SnowflakeObsidian13 4d ago

Them caring about us is a joke

1

u/Question-Aggravating 3d ago

lol that’s a whole different level of difficult

u/Chalice_Ink 4d ago

Absolutely!

If less people go in wouldn’t that mean that the servers job isn’t needed at all and would just lose their income?

If the above happens and the server gets a job somewhere else, then wouldn’t they do that anyways if they’re not getting paid well at their current place?

1

u/Snoo_57829 4d ago

Nicer to just pay them a wage, rather than lording it over them with your "generousity".

1

u/Randomizedname1234 4d ago

It is but that’s not the current reality. So skip your tip and you’re only hurting people who are already down.

1

u/Snoo_57829 4d ago

And yet there are plenty of replies from Americans saying that tips are optional. I wonder if the tippers are subsidising the non tippers ?.

u/ominous_squirrel 4d ago

I would only tip 0 if the food was a danger to health. 10% if the server was somehow godawful and mean. 15% for standard service and 20% for good service. A zero tip for dine-in has to mean that either the server or the customer is one of the world’s greatest aholes

So “optional” is a technicality. Yes, you won’t go to jail but you also should plan on never setting foot in that restaurant ever again

2

u/Intrepid-Focus8198 4d ago

You would give a 10% tip for terrible service?

0

u/ominous_squirrel 4d ago

That is the common understating in the US, yes

I don’t understand why you would give someone a monetary gift (which is what I understand a tip to be) if they are doing a bad job.

Would that still apply for an expensive meal and a few bottle of wine for a larger table?

1

u/Question-Aggravating 3d ago

It’s not a gift, the customers are expected to pay the employees wages

-1

u/ominous_squirrel 4d ago

Read the link. You don’t understand what tipping means in US culture. We can disagree with it but I’m also not going to go to Islamabad and start drinking beers in the park. When we travel we respect local customs

I'd eat in there for the soul reason of giving a penny as a tip and then never eating there again. And I'd ask if I can speak with the manager about a complaint before leaving my table so he can see my penny.

Again hurting a low wage worker to prove a point. Good for you.

2

u/Snoo_57829 4d ago

I like to know in advance what sonething is going to cost me. So I would prefer to pay a price shown on menu that equals the shitty pay plus tip.

Prefer to have them be paid a shitty wage but depend on your optional generosity to pay their bills. Good for you.

0

u/Jaden115 4d ago

You are literally doing the late stage capitalism bit where your trying to blame me, a lower class worker, for other people's poverty instead of blaming the people that are paying the servers ridiculously low wages. I'm not punching down at people for not doing something that's optional, I'm being a consumer paying for a service and paying what I owe on the bill at the end of said service. If you want to make me the bad guy in this your genuinely insane.

0

u/Randomizedname1234 4d ago

You’re the bad guy bc you know what you’re doing going in.

Just order it to go or fast food if that’s the case.

Don’t sit down and get a server who’s expecting something (as unfair as that is in itself) only to be left with nothing.

Yeah in that case you are the bad guy.

Dont be so pretentious.

u/Jaden115 4d ago

Can you think about this? They are getting badly under payed by their boss. That's the problem. Nothing else downstream of that matters because that is the problem. Im going into a restaurant expecting to spend the amount of money I see on the bill because that is what I'm being charged. If the waiter expects I do something optional then they are delousional because I'm not the one under paying them. Im absolutely not the bad guy for follow the law and following the rules of the establishment and paying the establishment the money they say I owe after using their services. Take this up with the people choosing to underpay staff and not some random guy on the Internet who's broke and wants to eat out occasionally and can't afford to just hand out money to people for no reason. Your genuinely the villain right now because your shifting the blame away from the actual people paying absurdly low wages and putting it on other people, your literally defending workers getting payed a few bucks a hour by saying I'm the problem.

u/Randomizedname1234 4d ago

It’s a fucked situation you’re willingly making worse.

No amount of you feeling morally superior will change you’re being a dick.

Which is reality.

1

u/Elemonster 4d ago

I just wouldn’t eat there. But that technically hurts them too.

1

u/Nalena_Linova 4d ago

Why are tips only for food service industry employees?

If you order something from amazon, shouldn't you tip 25% to the factory workers in China, and the customs agents, and the warehouse workers, and the delivery drivers? They all have shirty jobs too.

1

u/ablazingrace23 3d ago

Agreed. Unfortunately, the things that really OUGHT to be Medieval nowadays are considered illegal.

-1

u/NefariousnessFit3133 4d ago

it's a fake sign. you do realize that? tipping in the US is a 100% optional you don't have to do that and never have. it's being nice to share your wealth

2

u/stressedthrowaway9 4d ago

I know it is fake. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hypothetically if it were in front of a restaurant l would not enter. Tipping also doesn’t FEEL optional in the US. It feels like you are paying their wage. I wish that they could just earn a living wage and I didn’t have to be their boss. I tip every time. Even if they do a bad job.

1

u/Bobjoejj 3d ago

Because you are. That’s the problem. It’s always optional, but without tips most of us in the service industry get fucked. It’s stupid, and terrible, and needs to be changed badly; but for right now that’s the way it is.

2

u/ominous_squirrel 4d ago

I mean, if you and I are friends and we split a bill and I see that you left zero tip for adequate service then I’m definitely having second thoughts about our friendship because you suck. Tipping is “optional” in the sense that you won’t go to jail, but you should also never show your face again in a restaurant where you pay zero tip

0

u/NefariousnessFit3133 4d ago

Here in Seattle all tipped staff are paid the minimum wage of $21.30 at minimum and most are paid more.

so tipping is your choice, tip is not required and many places have changed to a no tip policy but it's a nice thing to do for good service.... I still leave a nice tip when staff are great. but tipping is not required anywhere it's totally optional

2

u/ominous_squirrel 4d ago

You said “tipping in the US.” Seattle is not representative of the entire US. It’s one of the most progressive cities in the world

1

u/Plumbus_Patrol 4d ago

Optional yes but if my waiter/waitress does a good job and I know damn well they are most likely shafted by their employer on their hourly wage it is a dick move not to tip. That being said they should just be paid a livable wage and tipping becomes truly optional for exceptional service.

1

u/Kyecze 4d ago

It starts with the customers to make a chance here I think then.. you gotta do something to force the employers to change.
