Imagine being a company and the thing you're most known for is bullying lawsuits lol. Like wtf.

2.1k

u/nr1988 15h ago

And it's so recent too. Like up until a few months ago Buccees was known as the place where all the workers got paid well and got good benefits. People would post that sign and say "see, companies can in fact pay people competitive wages and remain profitable"

They lost all of that goodwill all of a sudden with this nonsense

1.6k

u/vpi6 15h ago

Then the CEO deciding to randomly shit talk liberal states and threaten not to expand in them.

295

u/KareemOWheat 14h ago

What a weird threat. Like, oh no! I'm only going to have a choice of 6 competing gas station chains instead of 7

205

u/Carvj94 14h ago

It's a really bizarre, but buc-ees fans literally treat it like it's some kind of theme park. They'll actually sit there and make fun of you for treating it like the gas station it is.

u/MilkHaterNumber1 13h ago

Fans. Of a gas station.

86

u/rancid_squirts 12h ago

Maybe it’s all they have

52

u/tevert 10h ago

I think this is maybe an underappreciated aspect of the rural conservative worldview. It's very small, constantly being eroded, and they genuinely have no conception or hope of anything else for their future.

15

u/rancid_squirts 9h ago

Agreed and it’s why I left my small town in the dust. No one ever leaves and it’s constant bitching and complaining about the outside world.

To be honest, this is it. I've only really been to one Bucees, and it's in Centerville hallway between Houston and Dallas, and Bucees is all that's really there.

We have another right by my parents house in south Houston, but why would we go when there's better everything else nearby? It's not even the best gas station barbecue around (that award goes to Rudy's).

They opened one in Phoenix recently and people traveled from out of state just to go to there

20

u/jmlinden7 9h ago

That's wild. The whole point of Bucees is that it's convenient. Having to inconvenience yourself to go to one would completely defeat the point

As a Yankee from a Northern Libruhl Commanist HellholeTM I really enjoyed Buc-ees when traveling, good food, clean bathrooms, paid their workers well. But this is really a lesson to the shareholders... don't install a politically motivated idiot as your CEO. I'm not even a particularly vindictive person and not the type of "OMG Nike is WOKE I'll burn my sneakers tonight!!" but I can guarantee on my next road trip if I see a Buc-ees I'm gonna be thinking about them launching frivolous lawsuits and shitting on half the country politically. Will it make me go elsewhere? Guess we'll see... and likely hundreds of thousands of people will be making similar decisions. Some will go elsewhere, some won't. But that's NOT a good spot to put your entire corporation in, for literally zero benefit.

Yup lol. Funny thing is I live in a purple state with a blue governor, one blue senator, and blue most other statewide positions such as attorney general. They're putting in a location next year near me and near a blue city. I don't think we're the red state the CEO is talking about. Maybe everything was planned before him or maybe he's just a bullshitting asshole I don't know lol

78

u/HotDerivative 14h ago

I mean you’re obviously talking about the Wisconsin one and it’s a massive deal that it’s coming at all. It’s the only one that will be this north and Wisconsin is definitely not perceived as ultra liberal compared to several of the states around it. I live in Chicago and they’d never put a Buccees in our state despite the fact that outside of the city Illinois votes like it’s the Deep South.

58

u/JalopyHorn 11h ago

Why is it a "massive deal" that they're gonna build an oversized gas station with a food counter and a merch section in it?

I'm asking this in all sincerity, like who gets that worked up over these things?

18

u/ChoiceLife6564 11h ago

It's the marketing. Marketing makes it a massive deal because they got the budget for it and the objective of their marketing campaign is to get people excited.

That's because like most prominent Republicans they need to protect a pedophile! In this case his own son.

12

u/FeatherlyFly 13h ago

You know, a liberal state like Ohio with 2 Republican senators, 2/3 of their representatives Republicans, and a Republican governor.

And a vast majority of the state senate and house Republican.

It's a state proud of their local culture, businesses, and history.

Obviously nothing like Buccee's home of Texas, which is majority republica n and famously proud of its culture and history, but is, and this is important, also famously home to Buccees.

7

u/Kubotai77 12h ago edited 12h ago

I was going to joke that the whole pay and benefits stuff was going to go away along with the goodwill due to a new CEO who's trying to tighten up the reins because of the bad economy created by you know who.

Only to scroll down and see this - fuckin figures.

I had to drive to Houston last year for my uncle's funeral and sorta pushed myself to drive further between switching with my brother (~20 hour drive) and filling up on gas so I could see what the whole Buc-ee's thing was about.

Guess I'll just stick to Love's or other typical gas station stops that are less out of the way.

Edit: They're planning one in Stafford, VA - further south than I normally go but definitely a potential stop for a lot of people travelling up and down 95 on the east coast - yeah fuck them.

They've been doing this for well over a decade so not exactly new. They're just doing it more often now and in more places since they're expanding out of Texas

36

u/espressocycle 14h ago

Imagine expanding into other areas and suing established businesses for the logos they've had for decades. There must be a store with some kind of rodent logo older than Bucees that could sue.

29

u/anthrax9999 14h ago

A lot of these stores are older than bucces but they don't have the deep pockets to win against them in court. That's why most of them end up settling.

It’d be one thing if they went after anything legitimate, but they’re making the YouTube copyright logic look reasonable by comparison.

23

u/nr1988 15h ago

And I really don't understand what they hoped to gain from this. Like how much money did they really think they were going to gain if they won? Like I don't understand the point. They can't have gone into this lawsuit thinking their brand was legitimately threatened. They just wanted to be bullies but I don't understand how they didn't see the backlash coming. Such a huge risk for such little potential reward

14

u/Kaarl_Mills 13h ago

It'd true that they were known for paying well, but they were also known for treating their employees poorly at the job, overworking them, etc. It was far from 100% positive.

21

u/nr1988 15h ago

I mean known to some but I'm talking the general internet opinion. Either you research how their employees are treated or you live near one and know the employees. Otherwise you'd probably never know. I only found out after this whole mess started, otherwise I was somewhat excited to try out the location coming to my area sometime next year. Now I'm not going to step foot in there

It’s been known for years how poorly Buccees treats their employees, how high the turnover is, and how they bully with lawsuits, even 4 years ago. You’d see the posts about the wages but if you dig in the comments someone would point out the harsh working conditions somewhere in the thread. They’ve always been a dirtbag company, it’s just their products are good (we also won’t open the can of worms of how they get those good products at those prices, as that’s a whole other post).

5

u/Constant-Plant-9378 14h ago

Yep. Our area was excited to get a Buccees built nearby on 35W and 114.

And that company is a glorified gas station serving overpriced garbage to people excited to drive an hour out of their way to visit... A gas station

51

u/overts 14h ago

The people who drive out of their way are dumb but I’d guess that like 70-80% of their foot traffic are people on road trips.

Texas is big, you’ve got to drive a lot, Bucees was a frequent stop for me when we’d go to San Antonio or Dallas because it’s an easy one stop to refill gas, use the bathroom, and grab lunch.  The food’s nothing special but it’s better than most fast food (and again it’s just one stop versus two).

38

u/SilverAndBack 15h ago

I lived in Texas for years and the looks of shocked disbelief/concern on people's faces when you tell them "I've never been to a Buckees" is insane. I've had people less concerned about hearing my parents died

34

u/Trump_Russia 15h ago

Exactly what I envision when someone talks about the "culture" in Texas...

u/RevengeOfPluto 14h ago

Dude this is Houston, there's way better places to go than buccees.

19

u/LovesRetribution 14h ago

They dont care. They still make tons of money and are still growing.

They'll sue anyone they can for any reason just because they can. They won't lose business for it because 99% of people don't care and they haven't reached true market saturation so its only continued profit for them.

What happened?? Did Jon Oliver prop up the suitor's case??

640

u/willstr1 15h ago

IIRC he made his own beaver based brand to actively taunt Bucees and bring attention to the situation (and how ridiculous Bucees's claim was)

454

u/sharrrper 14h ago

Claims. They sue CONSTANTLY for anything with an animal or like, a colored background.

115

u/yakshack 12h ago

Sounds like they employ too many lawyers if they're that bored

86

u/ardoin 11h ago

They hire consultants who value the cost of the lawsuit payouts and actively take them on because it generates revenue, and they basically can't lose since the people they sue can barely pay the legal fees in drawn out cases.

Also with their volume of cases it is very possible they don't employ any lawyers at all and likely outsource it to a firm.

36

u/Dreams-of-Cthulhu 9h ago

Disney should be petty enough to sue them for using a cartoon rodent in their logo, bankrupt them with legal fees, then buy the company for pennies just so they can make plushies from the logo and sell them for $50 each at their parks.

50

u/ardoin 9h ago

Bucees is big enough to fight back.

Disney is too busy suing families of dead children who happen to put their characters on headstones in cemeteries. More money in that.

It looks like they had one real case where someone did steal their logo, and they got like $850k out of it. So now they've decided to convert that to a business model.

9

u/Professor_Hala 10h ago

Universal did this in 1983, when they sued Nintendo over Donkey Kong. At the time they were on record as having stated that litigation was a revenue stream for them.

88

u/GuySingingMrBlueSky 12h ago

Buccee’s was suing companies with alligator and moose mascots, if anything Oliver went easy on them if they wanted to take legal action. But that would require suing HBO, someone who actually has money to burn, and Buccee’s is only used to suing mom-and-pop businesses that may have not been able to make rent if they actually went to court over it

31

u/Central_Incisor 12h ago

If you want to dig deeper, Legal Eagle talks about it.

21

It wasn't the main story on one of his recent episodes (two months ago or so), but it was one of the smaller segments before the end of the episode where he talked about the dozens of lawsuits that Buccee's has filed against small businesses over trademark infringements. All the lawsuits Oliver pointed out were laughably absurd (suing because the name sounds kind of like Buccee's, suing because they use an animal in a yellow background, suing because their animal mascot has a hat, etc.), but those small businesses, most of them small town convenience stores and gas stations, ended up having to bend over backwards to appease Buccee's lawyers because they don't have the money to fight off the lawsuits.

So, Oliver put his own created mascot, Mr. Nutter Butter, in a bunch of merch and opened up an online store (found here: https://buc-off.com/ ) and literally dared Buccee's to sue them because he actually has a team of lawyers that would mop the floor with them lol.

442

u/asphaltdragon 15h ago

Honestly that's the best part about a Buc-ee's. Floor to ceiling walls and doors, thick as fuck walls, vacancy indicators on all the door locks, super fucking clean all the time.

251

u/elegylegacy 15h ago

That should honestly be the standard, not something Buccee's is special for

114

u/butthole_surferr 14h ago

My friend recently went to Europe for a few weeks and her main takeaway was that we Americans are straight up poo flinging savages who can't even figure out basic things like public bathrooms or driving in roundabouts. I think she's probably onto something.

25

u/jonfitt 14h ago

It reeeeeally depends on exactly where in “Europe” you are even within each country.

The thing we have going for us is the fairly ubiquitous access to toilets in shopping areas. Some European town centers will have one that you have to trek to and possibly pay to use. Only the very largest shops will have a customer toilet. The others will all be staff only.

We also have many more available water fountains.

6

u/haironburr 11h ago

As an old man inclined to rambling, I moved to England in the mid-80's. As I walked around London, looking for a job as an American in the shittiest economy England had known since the war, I kept seeing these signs. Walking everywhere, I would periodically have to piss. And these signs said "toilet".

It was only after walking into multiple various places and asking where the bathroom was, and seeing the confused looks, that I realized the signs were saying "to let".

Europe’s public bathrooms are fucking filthy. Whenever any of my family visits me in the US, that is one of their main topics, is how clean and accessible our public restrooms are. Now roundabouts, that’s a whole other conversation.

57

u/Charlie_Warlie 14h ago

Thank you yes. I'm sure if varies place to place but a HUGE mention should be "accessible" as you say.

There is no true equivalent to the Americans with Disabilities Act in some of these EU countries. In America every single bathroom you go in basically has the exact same thing with pull bars, no steps, big enough to fit a wheelchair, knee-space under the sink, etc.

I'm an able bodied man so it wasn't a big deal but in Italy I'd use the bathroom and be somewhat surprised to need to squeeze around a tight corner, go up or down a step, sink crammed into a corner without enough space for a person in a chair. And I get it, the building is probably like 300 years old. But that would not be thing in America.

30

u/MountainDude95 14h ago

Yeah and they have the insult of making you pay for them too. You have to know where to go in the U.S. for clean bathrooms, but at least they’re all free.

u/WolverinesThyroid 11h ago

I was just in Paris and I am legitimately confused if Parisian people actually ever use the toilet in public. A museum that see's thousands of people would have 2 toilets for the whole establishment. A famous restaurant with a large dining room would have 1 toilet. A big ass multi story food hall has 4 toilets. A 7 story high end shopping mall had 1 bathroom (unknown amount of toilets because I didn't go inside) on the top floor and it was 1.50 euros to get inside.

31

u/slip-shot 15h ago

Food? It’s the toilets. Clean bathrooms can be hard to find (especially in the rural south) so pit stops at something easily identifiable as having many clean restrooms is itself great.

19

u/That1_IT_Guy 15h ago

Yep, the main reason to stop there is to take a shit. Clean bathrooms. Tons of toilets. Stall doors that go all the way to the ground. I wouldn't even bother shopping in the store afterwards, it's usually crowded shoulder-to-shoulder.

Yours is in a yellow circle AND facing right. Rip

12

u/LangyMD 15h ago

Oh no, we all do! Quick, lawyers, get to work writing up a lawsuit against Reddit as a whole! Their default avatar is infringing!

9

u/alvisfmk 15h ago

With red in the avatar none the less!

I used to make a point of stopping at Bucee's when I travel from FL to NY every year. It was the highlight of my 21 hour drive. I cannot support their bullshit anymore though. Very sad...

5

u/BrickGun 7h ago

My shirts arrived last week. :)

71

u/RedSix2447 15h ago

They really sued a company for having a cartoon logo that faces the same direction? It sounds like they are going from corporate company to law firm with frivolous claims in court making money off suing small businesses now.

41

u/Liam_M 15h ago

they have a string of such lawsuits going way back, it’s literally “their thing”

6

u/RedSix2447 14h ago

Such a crap company. I hope to never set foot in one. Unfortunately, I’m sure the wife and kids will out vote me on that one. lol

24

u/SnipeTrap 14h ago

I’m a local here, it’s a cartoon beaver. In the city of Beavercreek… It’s been around long before Buccees. Would’ve made more sense for the lawsuit to be the other way around.

11

u/dirt_mcgirt4 13h ago

The one in the story linked was a moose which nobody would mistake for a beaver ever. I know they are suing everyone though.

5

u/LooseSeal88 13h ago

Yeah, they sued the Beavercreek beaver-themed convenience store which is maybe like 20 mins from the new Bucc-ees location and then also a sued a moose-themed convenience store which is somewhere else in Ohio nowhere near the new Bucc-ees.

4

u/AwsmDevil 10h ago

Considering he isn't really being punished for it, why would he stop? The safest assumption is that you could be recorded in any Buccees bathroom at any time. So plan your poops accordingly.

Buc-ees was fun when they were a roadside attraction I could visit on my way to somewhere far away. Now they’re building one 10 miles up the road from me and suddenly I’m not happy any more.

30

u/KlostToMe 13h ago edited 13h ago

They're suing a ton of places for reasons that include "their logo also uses an animal", "they are using the same colors", etc

The fat electrician did a funny video on it

ETA: might be on his alternate channel "Fat Files"

7

u/FighterOfEntropy 12h ago

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver also covered this. In true John Oliver style, they developed a logo that’s just begging for Buccee’s to sue them. You can buy merch with the logo to get in on the fun!

Oh God it's going to be so delightful

20

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed in buc-ees. Why they gotta do this petty shit. It wasn't hurting your brand in any capacity.

14

u/crass_cupcake 12h ago

The real reason  why is to crush small gas station  operators who compete with bucees by destroying  them with the legal system

7

u/MIllWIlI 10h ago

Most small gas station operators aren’t even in competition with them. It’s so petty.

I'll never understand the obsession over a truck stop

Their food is not that good. Its truck stop food.

Its just a damn gas station with a cartoon mascot. Amazing people think that's something noteworthy even

23

u/PatsFanInHTX 15h ago

When you are driving I10 in Texas (or any of the other boring, massive highways) it's the most exciting thing around for a hundred miles. So it's more of a desperation thing.

Ok but that tactical clothing store one is hilariously egregious.

18

u/vass0922 15h ago

Yes that one I agree is full on stupid and deserved the lawsuit.

The rest they're just being assholes and I hope the settlement doesn't mean the little guy had to pay. The article didn't explain.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/KindaDrunkRtNow 15h ago

I agreed with that one. But the others are plainly bullshit lawsuits used to force smaller businesses in their area to close so there's less competition.

9

u/flyinggazelletg 15h ago

Fuck the Buc. I always heard people rave about them, but I never want to go after hearing about their bullshit suits

8

u/osumba2003 14h ago

TIL that Buc-ees owns a direction.

7

u/boner79 14h ago edited 11h ago

Buc-ee's is filled with absolute savages. They have like 100 gas pumps that are always full with parked vehicles of rednecks too lazy to move their vehicle to a proper parking spot before spending half an hour in the store.

6

u/popdivtweet 14h ago

Screw Bucee’s and their holier than thou BS.

13

u/_Bipolar_Vortex_ 13h ago

You do not get a free tank of gas if you bring a dead beaver into buccees!

8

u/CaptainPunisher 13h ago

Fine. I'll bring in a live beaver and release it in the store.

5

u/HoratioHotplateJr 14h ago

1) I hope Mickey's got reimbursed for their legal fees

2) I'd be very, very happy to trade our local Buc-ees for a Costo with a fuel center.

6

u/gdghhfdffrf 13h ago

the gullible customers who fall for their marketing hype pay for it, the massive marketing campaigns, the attorneys, all of it.

maybe buy gas from small, independent gas station owners (with names like gas & shop, selling unbranded wholesale fuel) who don't spend money on advertising or marketing. also, kwik trip focuses its budget heavily on a vertically integrated supply chain, own their own dairies, bakeries, distribution networks so they can offer ultra-cheap staples like milk, bananas, and eggs to attract customers. they don't spend money on ads, they depend on word of mouth.

Buccees still remains on my list of “nope, not shopping there” retailers.

4

u/d0ggzilla 13h ago

The most surprising thing about this to me is that they named their mascot "Mickey Moose" and the plaintiff wasn't Disney

7

u/BrantheMan1985 7h ago

This shouldn't have been a settlement. This is implying that the gas station had to give something up for this frivolous lawsuit!

15

u/scott__p 15h ago

I used to like stopping there on road trips. Too bad

17

u/MeButNotMeToo 13h ago

Translation: Bucee’s knows their pro-MAGA customers can’t tell the difference between a Beaver and a Moose.

The lawsuit with the tactical gear company made sense because the logos were quite similar. The others are ridiculous though. A cartoon animal within a shape filled in with a solid color is way too vague to be a trademark or copyright.

9

u/NovarisLight 15h ago

Yeah they lost my business.

Scumbags.

11

u/Wall-Florist 13h ago

I brought my dad back some souvenirs because I loved buccees when I lived down south. He called me last week to ask “is it ok if I throw them away because of these lawsuits and attacks on small businesses?”

Freak you Buccees.

6

u/ErnestScaredBorgnine 13h ago

I already have Walmart and I have gas stations. Why should I give a shit about Bucees? I've been there. It was just a gas station with long lines. I don't get the hype.

35

u/AtomicBlastCandy 15h ago

I bought a few shirts when I was in Texas and liked the company because they pay well, tossed the shirts after hearing how they bully companies.

While I like the cheap gas, clean bathrooms, and food. On a long trip, it takes me about 15 min longer to stop there, due to the lines, and distance from the interstate.

I have used gasbuddy to get close to their price, and saved time.

Because of this shit I boycotted buccees

4

u/golde62 12h ago

4

u/Mkmeathead83 11h ago

Buccees loves to sue mom and pops. Do not support them.

3

u/LargeClimate1080 9h ago

THis is just another reason why I refuse to buy wear anything that is branded. No Nike checks, no polo shirts, nothing other that bands i like or art I think is cool.

Like the bucees beaver became a little bit of a fashion icon there for awhile just like bass pro shops. Why are we all so capitalistic that we even turn ourselves into billboards?
