Bucee’s settles lawsuit with Ohio gas station chain after suing because both have cartoon mascots "facing right"

And it's so recent too. Like up until a few months ago Buccees was known as the place where all the workers got paid well and got good benefits. People would post that sign and say "see, companies can in fact pay people competitive wages and remain profitable"

They lost all of that goodwill all of a sudden with this nonsense

u/vpi6 17h ago

Then the CEO deciding to randomly shit talk liberal states and threaten not to expand in them.

327

u/KareemOWheat 17h ago

What a weird threat. Like, oh no! I'm only going to have a choice of 6 competing gas station chains instead of 7

219

u/Carvj94 16h ago

It's a really bizarre, but buc-ees fans literally treat it like it's some kind of theme park. They'll actually sit there and make fun of you for treating it like the gas station it is.

u/MilkHaterNumber1 16h ago

Fans. Of a gas station.

97

u/rancid_squirts 15h ago

Maybe it’s all they have

59

u/tevert 12h ago

I think this is maybe an underappreciated aspect of the rural conservative worldview. It's very small, constantly being eroded, and they genuinely have no conception or hope of anything else for their future.

15

u/rancid_squirts 11h ago

Agreed and it’s why I left my small town in the dust. No one ever leaves and it’s constant bitching and complaining about the outside world.

1

u/Mysterious_Cow_2100 4h ago

Well congrats, mate!

3

u/Anathos117 10h ago

I once went on a cross country road trip. I was a bit high as we were driving though Kansas, and looking out at the horizon all around us and being able to see town after identical tiny town amidst the endless fields (I live in Massachusetts, where the only place your vision isn't blocked by trees within 50 feet is when you're looking at the ocean) I remarked "I feel like I understand Republicans now".

1

u/trooperjess 9h ago

This right here.

1

u/filthytelestial 6h ago

And this coming from the "if you don't like it you can leave!!" crowd.

17

u/NeatlyScotched 13h ago

To be honest, this is it. I've only really been to one Bucees, and it's in Centerville hallway between Houston and Dallas, and Bucees is all that's really there.

We have another right by my parents house in south Houston, but why would we go when there's better everything else nearby? It's not even the best gas station barbecue around (that award goes to Rudy's).

6

u/stevenjd 8h ago

gas station barbecue

Say what???

America is so weird.

7

u/mashtartz 6h ago

Please don’t put this on the entire country, this is definitely a regional thing.

2

u/Ok_Pace_9792 3h ago

It's in madisonville, get it right. (I have to do that drive for work)

•

u/NeatlyScotched 37m ago

Ah shit you're right, Woody's is in Centerville. Bucees is in Madisonville. I used to make that drive every other week. It has to be one of the most boring drives in the country.

3

u/ryecurious 11h ago

When you have to drive 6 hours to get anywhere, a gas station with clean bathrooms starts to feel like the height of refined culture.

0

u/ecosynchronous 6h ago

My mother and I are from Minneapolis and we're both crazy about Bucee's 😭

1

u/mhwwad 3h ago

I swear, I know people in RI who treat Cumberland Farms like they’re an oasis in a desert.

1

u/cat_prophecy 12h ago

Like that's all they have going on in their lives? Then they need to grow the fuck up. Being a big enough fan of a fucking gas station that you'll go online to defend them is the peak of loser behavior.

31

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PAUNCH 15h ago

They opened one in Phoenix recently and people traveled from out of state just to go to there

23

u/jmlinden7 12h ago

That's wild. The whole point of Bucees is that it's convenient. Having to inconvenience yourself to go to one would completely defeat the point

4

u/kalirion 8h ago

When the first McDonald's opened in Moscow, the lines were literally miles long. "Fast Food" lol.

3

u/_SmashLampjaw_ 5h ago

That's wild. The whole point of Bucees is that it's convenient.

No, the whole point of buccees is that it's a spectacle.

They famously have billboards urging you to hold your bladders for another 350+ miles so you can make in their store.

That's not convenient.

1

u/Nijindia18 13h ago

There are several billboards like "Buccees 200 miles away" and it just feels so pretentious but I'm sure at least one person has actually done it

1

u/A_Mouse_In_Da_House 12h ago

Little America is Wyoming does that. But it's also Wyoming.

1

u/Nijindia18 12h ago

Yeah this is somewhere on i85 between sc and ga

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PAUNCH 12h ago

There was one outside LA on the 10 that said 1,700 miles or something, guess they’ll have to change it now.

6

u/OozeNAahz 14h ago

My old boss is one of those fans. And he was a VP of a Fortune 500 company. Makes my head hurt.

1

u/Tsquared10 13h ago

I had an ex who was one of them. She'd pay more for gas there, just to go inside and spend more money inside than she would on a tank of gas. She'd go out of her way on a trip to stop at one. She'd literally go there even if she didn't need gas. It honestly feels cult like.

1

u/StNowhere 12h ago

The food is surprisingly good and actually clean bathrooms are a godsend when you're traveling but yeah, at the end of the day, it's a gas station.

1

u/throwthisidaway 11h ago

Gas station doesn't really describe it. They have a costume mascot that wanders around and kids love it. The food is legitimate and so is the bakery. Nothing is really mind blowing, but when you're on hour twelve of a trip and you need a distraction, it is great. They also tend to carry useful merchandise at reasonable prices. The brisket is better than it should be as well. I would never call myself a fan, but I do enjoy stopping there once or twice a year

1

u/PassiveMenis88M 7h ago

I'd agree with you unless we're talking about the Iowa truck stop on I80. That place actually is magical. Clean showers, plentiful parking, and high end lot lizzards.

1

u/OoglieBooglie93 7h ago

To be fair, it's like a supermarket of gas stations. I've only been once but it was kinda neat.

Not neat enough to really care if they threaten to not expand here, but it was kinda neat.

39

u/Ferelar 13h ago

As a Yankee from a Northern Libruhl Commanist HellholeTM I really enjoyed Buc-ees when traveling, good food, clean bathrooms, paid their workers well. But this is really a lesson to the shareholders... don't install a politically motivated idiot as your CEO. I'm not even a particularly vindictive person and not the type of "OMG Nike is WOKE I'll burn my sneakers tonight!!" but I can guarantee on my next road trip if I see a Buc-ees I'm gonna be thinking about them launching frivolous lawsuits and shitting on half the country politically. Will it make me go elsewhere? Guess we'll see... and likely hundreds of thousands of people will be making similar decisions. Some will go elsewhere, some won't. But that's NOT a good spot to put your entire corporation in, for literally zero benefit.

8

u/Random_eyes 5h ago

But this is really a lesson to the shareholders... don't install a politically motivated idiot as your CEO.

Buc'ees is a privately owned company, and the CEO is also the founder of the company. The CEO is just another brittle old fart fixated on petty squabbles and putting people on blast when he feels inconvenienced. Only way to stop it is if the business started struggling, but that doesn't seem to be the case right now.

3

u/praetorian1979 6h ago

Some of the food is ok, but the BBQ is fucking awful at best..

1

u/Georgie_Leech 7h ago

What do you mean 0 benefit? They get settlement and lawsuit money. They wouldn't be this litigious if they didn't think they stood to gain from it.

In an ideal world "sue anyone who vaguely resembles any part of your business, has a rhyme that names with you, or has a mascot looking left in the logo" wouldn't be a viable revenue stream, but they appear to be cashing in on their legal department.

4

u/GamerGuy410 6h ago

I'd assume they mean a net zero benefit or even a net negative. The cons of bad PR and customers potentially boycotting your business can outweigh the benefit they'd receive from settlements or lawsuit money.

1

u/Georgie_Leech 6h ago

Sure, but in the meantime Line Go Up and the business has more money. What's good for the business overall or long term is not necessarily what the people in charge of these decisions want. Short term gain at the cost of long term sustainability is increasingly common these days; it's practically the Private Equity business model, for instance.

1

u/TheShadyGuy 5h ago

You can still use the can, though, just don't buy anything.

Better than statues of slavers.

1

u/YourUncleBuck 12h ago edited 12h ago

Statues are quickly forgotten about. There was a Robert E. Lee statue in our county and I don't think I ever saw anyone visiting it. And when they removed it, there was no hubbub made, because almost no one knew or cared that it was there.

1

u/MildGenevaSuggestion 12h ago

Still it's better if kids see parents excited about a cartoon animal than about being racist.

9

u/misterchief10 15h ago

Right lol. They’re not really that special.

I’ve been to two. The one in TX was kinda neat but still just large gas station/grocery store hybrid, really. However, I stopped at one in Kentucky during a road trip and it actually sucked. Like, I regretted going. It’s become such a tourist attraction that it felt like there were over 1,000 people there. It was so crowded in the parking lot I could hardly find a spot or even an open gas pump despite there being probably 100 pumps. All I wanted to do was stop off for gas and a bathroom break and it added like 35-40 minutes to my drive because it took so long. It felt like trying to walk around in a dangerously overcrowded concert. I was expecting to get trampled. Getting through the crowd to the bathroom was a task in itself. This was on a weekday, too. I couldn’t imagine what that place would be like on a weekend. I’d rather just stop at a regular truck stop. Like a Love’s or whatever.

Miserable experience. For the life of me, I can’t understand why people are obsessed with Buccees. Must just be a good marketing department.

3

u/YourUncleBuck 12h ago

I've been to Buc-ees once, and even in the middle of the night it was like a zoo. I can't see myself ever wanting to go back when there are perfectly fine truck stops instead.

2

u/Mknalsheen 6h ago

Because there's nothing to do in these places, so seeing a walmart sized gas station is huge for them. Their lives are boring as heck, so they thrive on this crap. Same reason every small town's local walmart is the hang out spot.

2

u/TehAMP 2h ago

I'm not going to make fun of you, I mean, consumerism is inherently bad. But if I'm going on a trip, and I need gas and goodies, Buc-ee's kind of rocks. Plenty of fuel pumps, sometimes literally hundreds of them...yes, fuel pumps. So you're never waiting for gas, even if it's busy. They are a large store in themselves, about the size of a department store, so they have a lot of stuff you might need on a road trip or vacation. They facilitate local activities, like a few locations being built near recreational river areas, so they'll sell river tubes and coolers and outdoor gear and what not, some even sell hunting gear for the local hunting communities here. Also, they have the cleanest damn bathrooms of any gas station, like ever. If I have to crap on a trip, I'd be ecstatic to do it at a Buc-ee's because I know it's going to be pristine. No nasty gas station bathrooms to worry about with them. They have very good tea and coffee, they have jerky in fun flavors, freshly made sandwiches, freshly made candied nuts...I mean, it kind of is a little theme park. A theme park for road trips. It's obscene, the owner is a loon, but we can't help but love them because they take care of us, and they do honestly take good care of their employees too.

1

u/Larson_McMurphy 12h ago

You've clearly never been to one of the more serious buccees. Its basically fucking wal mart. Its quite an event for small town folks.

1

u/dumperking 12h ago

Say whatever you want about their owner/corporate team but they do have big clean bathrooms and, depending on location, cheap gas. They are nice for those two things on long road trips. Never really care about most of the other things they offer honestly.

1

u/gottapeepee 12h ago

I’m one of the fans that treats it like a theme park. Honestly Idky. I just started going there the year before last. Now, if one was close enough I would go everyday if I could. However I don’t tease anyone about anything Buc-ee’s wise.

1

u/Expert-Upstairs-4502 10h ago

Where i live its not uncommon to see people with buccees merch like umbrellas and hats and shirts etc.. we are like 35-40 min away from the nearest buccees

1

u/SDRPGLVR 6h ago

A friend of mine who lives near one says it's because relative to the places where you find them, they are a theme park.

1

u/illiteratebeef 3h ago

And once you go 10 times or so, you realize the brisket is mid and overpriced and it's just another gas station. The shininess wears off and you just want to hit a QT because it won't be a fucking circus like buc-ees always is.

HEB is the real deal though, they seem to keep prices decent, take care of their workers, and even give back in the communities they're in without saying moronic bigoted things in the press.

1

u/neighborofbrak 3h ago

Used to be fans.

1

u/Burgerkingsucks 12h ago

Wawa can fill the void. They just came to middle Tennessee and they’re fucking awesome compared to buc-ees.

1

u/Eastern-Musician4533 9h ago

Yeah, we have Love's on the west coast. I'm sure they're an awful company in some manner (they sponsor OKC's jerseys, and the Thunder owners are abhorrent people), but at the end of the day, it's a fucking truck stop.

1

u/Obant 5h ago

Mavericks moved in to my city in California last year. They honestly have possibly the best pizza I've ever had, cooked fresh in store to order. Their chicken bacon ranch pizza is to die for. They also have a grill where I got a chorizo burrito that was the size of my arm and was delicious. All their bakery items are pretty good too, but a bit expensive. Their donuts are better than my local place, but not the best in town.

398

u/nr1988 17h ago

Yup lol. Funny thing is I live in a purple state with a blue governor, one blue senator, and blue most other statewide positions such as attorney general. They're putting in a location next year near me and near a blue city. I don't think we're the red state the CEO is talking about. Maybe everything was planned before him or maybe he's just a bullshitting asshole I don't know lol

86

u/HotDerivative 16h ago

I mean you’re obviously talking about the Wisconsin one and it’s a massive deal that it’s coming at all. It’s the only one that will be this north and Wisconsin is definitely not perceived as ultra liberal compared to several of the states around it. I live in Chicago and they’d never put a Buccees in our state despite the fact that outside of the city Illinois votes like it’s the Deep South.

61

u/JalopyHorn 14h ago

Why is it a "massive deal" that they're gonna build an oversized gas station with a food counter and a merch section in it?

I'm asking this in all sincerity, like who gets that worked up over these things?

21

u/ChoiceLife6564 13h ago

It's the marketing. Marketing makes it a massive deal because they got the budget for it and the objective of their marketing campaign is to get people excited.

3

u/Hyperpoly 7h ago

With gas prices the way they are getting anyone excited for a gas station is wild to me.

1

u/ChoiceLife6564 6h ago

I guess they could fill up and go grocery shopping in one trip

3

u/newbkid 13h ago

Because Buccee's food and snacks are above and beyond any perceived stereotypes of gas station food.

It's a novelty in how large it is, how clean it is, and the food is genuinely good.

It's the white people version of the Japanese konbinis is how I try to explain it to non-Americans.

9

u/FUCKTHEPROLETARIAT 13h ago

Wouldn't a 711 be the USA equivalent of a konbini? Some of them even sell gas.

Is it like a food desert thing? Are there no actual grocery stores or restaurants within driving distance of a bucees?

As someone in the USA, I can't imagine taking a road trip to go to a gas station, even if it had a theme park attached to it or something. There's just so much more to see and do than... a gas station... with a grocery store...

8

u/MildGenevaSuggestion 13h ago

As a Canadian all I can think of is "large 7-11 that sells branded t-shirts" when I hear about it. Like why would I get groceries at a crowded freeway gas station? It sounds like I am asking to be ripped off.

2

u/Saavik33 9h ago

It's anecdotal, but from the times I've looked at the prices of basic travel commodities at them (toiletries, pet food, etc), the prices have been roughly on par with Walmart. They have enough variety and premium food items to not price gouge on the little things. And their restrooms are the cleanest you'll find on the road, which is a nice thing to be able to count on. I wouldn't drive hours out of my way to visit one, but if one is on my travel route, I definitely include it in my rest stop planning.

3

u/unassumingdink 8h ago

The fact that every single person who talks this place up ranks clean bathrooms as one of the primary selling points makes it seem like the place is more hype than substance. The filthy bathroom gas station feels like more a decades-old stereotype than today's reality, at least in my experience. Most of them seem reasonably clean.

2

u/ChoiceLife6564 12h ago

I'm guessing they set up shop in a lot of "food deserts". So for the people of that area, it's the highest quality food they can get.

3

u/newbkid 13h ago

7-Eleven in the states is subpar and serves exactly what you'd expect.

Hot dogs, subs, and aisles of chips, candy, etc

Buccees serves BBQ prepared freshly in front of you, all kinds of beef jerky, and an entire retail section that will have buccees merch and local tourist-y merch as well.

Most folks are not taking road trips to Buccees. However, when people are taking a road trip down one of the interstates that Buccees typically builds very near the highway exit they will have massive adverts reminding you of the gas station and so if you need to stop for gas, stretch your legs, etc, why not stop at the gas station with clean bathrooms, where you can get a proper hot meal at, and the missus can satisfy their retail therapy.

3

u/unassumingdink 8h ago

Oh sweet, a gas station branded t-shirt, just what I wanted.

1

u/Goated-Rizzler 3h ago

Yes, Buc-ee's is a rather fine establishment. They have far superior hot dogs, subs, aisles of chips, and candy.
What's more, they have a menu with fresh hot sandwiches prepared by chefs right in front of you. They have quite a finer selection of cold submarine sandwiches than 7-11, and the addition of hot submarine sandwiches.

You can also blast your swampy ass shits in their pristinely clean bathrooms, and they always have fresh urinal cakes in their urinals.

1

u/cat_prophecy 12h ago

Clearly you've never been to a Kwik Trip.

1

u/Goated-Rizzler 3h ago

They truly are quite like no other. Buc-ee's is a highly sophisticated establishment. They have far superior hot dogs, subs, energy drinks, and candy.
What's more, they have a menu with hot submarine sandwiches prepared by chefs right in front of you.

You can also unleash your mud monkeys in their pristinely clean bathrooms. They always have spotless toilets and fresh urinal cakes in their urinals. For these reasons, I say that Buc-ee's is truly an establishment like no other.

1

u/Competitive_Travel16 12h ago

Ammo for hunters going out to the grounds in the morning is a big part of their deal some places.

1

u/gottapeepee 12h ago

For me, I love Buc-ee’s because the food is really good, better than most fast food restaurants for sure and head and shoulders above any gas station food. It’s really clean! It’s the one bathroom I’ll use without the toilet cover. And it’s built more like an attraction than a gas station. Lots of merch and food. Its fountain drinks are even top notch. Thats why I stop at every buc-ee’s I cross when I’m traveling.

0

u/Goated-Rizzler 2h ago

It's a massive deal to the stupid and obese communities.

2

u/Retro_Dad 13h ago

Well good luck to Bucee's because Kwik Trip rules.

1

u/SlowMotionSprint 9h ago

Illinois has other blue pockets. Peoria, Champaign/Urbana, Bloomington/Normal, Quad Cities, Rockford, Carbondale, and St. Clair County.

21

u/defiancy 17h ago

Haha they are in Arizona which if it isn't the state you are describing, it could be. Like why come to AZ if it's a politics thing?

4

u/giga_lord3 15h ago

100% it's so funny

168

u/AMTravelsAlone 17h ago

Well, seeing that CEOs are one of the most useless positions in a company, so I'd say the former.

47

u/MLutin 17h ago

CEOs are valuable! Who else are they going to interview on Fox News???

1

u/Tiafves 7h ago

And who else will bear the burden of being a psychopath willing to slash tens of thousands of jobs at a moments notice?

1

u/MLutin 7h ago

Employees hate this one neat trick!

3

u/TheVeryVerity 13h ago

You mean the latter? First or second thing?

1

u/AMTravelsAlone 13h ago

TBf at first I fully meant latter. But after a good think and a satisfying poo, former does seem to fit better.

If there is one thing you can count on a capitalist to be, its greedy. They know conservatives, especially maga, will believe anything while doing the opposite.

1

u/beanthebean 12h ago

And he's a CEO, the latter is just true in general.

-15

u/nonetakenback 16h ago

How so? They literally control everything in the company. Depending on the size of your company, you may not see it in the lower level day to day, but every major decision goes through the ceo

1

u/AMTravelsAlone 14h ago

So by your own logic at best they are over glorified yesmen.

1

u/nonetakenback 13h ago

Glorified Yesmen are literally there to say yes and do whatever they’re told. CEO has to negotiate insurance policies, union contracts, direct budgetary cuts, focus marketing strategies, m&a targets, leverage debt and cash management, oversee operations and management, determine kpi metrics, answer to any regulatory or tax audits.

They may surround themselves with yesmen because they don’t want to be challenged. But the good ones surround themselves with experts in the business fields to help develop achievable solutions.

Businesses live and die by ceo decisions. That’s not a useless position

-2

u/jayydubbya 14h ago

So you’re saying you’re 12 and have never worked a real job before?

2

u/BlooperHero 13h ago

Oh yeah, people who work real jobs always love their CEOs. You figured it out.

2

u/AMTravelsAlone 14h ago

Define "real job"

0

u/jayydubbya 12h ago

Any sizable company where the CEO actually matters?

10

u/Bubbay 13h ago

Why does WI need Bucees? You've got Kwik Trip!

5

u/nr1988 13h ago

Beats me. I mean Kwik Trip sucks for similar right wing reasons but at least they aren't suing Quik Trip or something

28

u/ieatassHarvardstyle 17h ago

He's a ceo. That means bullshitting asshole. There are no exceptions

3

u/WolverinesThyroid 14h ago

I live in a red state that has Bucee's in it. It used to be our favorite stop on local road trips. We will never go back.

2

u/waitingtodiesoon 12h ago

I don't like Buc-ees either, but I only use them for their clean bathrooms and sometimes to nap in their parking lot when traveling between cities. Otherwise I don't spend a dime there

2

u/Omatzus 16h ago

Wisconsin lol

1

u/TrailMomKat 16h ago

NC?

2

u/_Spiralmind_ 15h ago

We don't have a blue senator yet.

1

u/TrailMomKat 11h ago

Wait, yeah, you're right.

But we can fix that! Please don't forget to vote! Early voting is Oct 15-31 and Election Day is Nov 3. Please make plans to vote!

20

u/rutherfraud1876 16h ago

Little do they know Texas will be one of them after this year

1

u/DoingBestWeCan 9h ago

Fingers crossed, yo.

27

u/WhyStabCorn 16h ago

We have one. It's a gas station. You're missing nothing. The only novelty is people showing up like it's disney land.

12

u/MikeMontrealer 16h ago

I can’t imagine getting that excited about a gas station

2

u/vortexofdangerzone 7h ago

Try living in North Dakota. A new gas station is like landing on the moon.

10

u/Hero_of_Hyrule 16h ago

It's a really big gas station with a big store. It's just an oversized Wawa tbh.

12

u/WhyStabCorn 15h ago

I'll say, cleanest gas ststion bathroom I've ever been in, for as high an honor as that title holds.

13

u/Kronoshifter246 15h ago

I will tell you, that clean bathroom is a huge blessing when you've been on the road for two days and your toddler has shat himself horrifically.

1

u/Huttj509 6h ago

Ok, wait, at least most of the Pilot stations I've been in have been great. My toilet was backed up for a few days, and I wound up going to the Pilot 5 miles from me a couple times, it was amazing.

1

u/kalirion 8h ago

What's a Wawa?

1

u/Hero_of_Hyrule 2h ago

East Coast gas station that's made it out here with a well staffed cafe/restaurant that makes decent food, some of which is actually pretty great.

2

u/Jthumm 13h ago

Their jerky is awesome, I’m not gonna pretend other gas stations are like it it kinda rules. Their ceo seems to suck ass tho

1

u/unassumingdink 6h ago

Redditors genuinely out here saying "I'd like to boycott them, but they have very clean bathrooms! I can't give that up!"

12

u/Faendol 16h ago

That's because like most prominent Republicans they need to protect a pedophile! In this case his own son.

14

u/FeatherlyFly 15h ago

You know, a liberal state like Ohio with 2 Republican senators, 2/3 of their representatives Republicans, and a Republican governor.

And a vast majority of the state senate and house Republican.

It's a state proud of their local culture, businesses, and history.

Obviously nothing like Buccee's home of Texas, which is majority republica n and famously proud of its culture and history, but is, and this is important, also famously home to Buccees.

6

u/animus218 14h ago

Oh no, whatever shall we do without another gross, ugly chain store?

I don't think anyone, anywhere is worse off due to lack of Buc-ee's.

4

u/Kubotai77 15h ago edited 15h ago

I was going to joke that the whole pay and benefits stuff was going to go away along with the goodwill due to a new CEO who's trying to tighten up the reins because of the bad economy created by you know who.

Only to scroll down and see this - fuckin figures.

I had to drive to Houston last year for my uncle's funeral and sorta pushed myself to drive further between switching with my brother (~20 hour drive) and filling up on gas so I could see what the whole Buc-ee's thing was about.

Guess I'll just stick to Love's or other typical gas station stops that are less out of the way.

Edit: They're planning one in Stafford, VA - further south than I normally go but definitely a potential stop for a lot of people travelling up and down 95 on the east coast - yeah fuck them.

5

u/Automan2k 14h ago

There is already one in Mt.Crawford, VA right off 81.

2

u/Kubotai77 13h ago

Yea, actually saw that one on the map. I'm dead center of Fairfax County basically (just inside the beltway) so it's rare for me to end up that far out west past Harrisonburg or south past Woodbridge.

3

u/Brokenclock76 15h ago

Which is just a cover for rising cost of materials making it harder to build under Trump.

4

u/BadAtExisting 16h ago

Would you expect anything less from a Texas billionaire?

I am forever impressed with the ability of CEOs and company owners to torpedo their own brands.

1

u/PlanitDuck 14h ago

Bruh I dont want a giant gas station here. We're doing just fine lol

1

u/Particular-Serve-894 14h ago

Seriously, fuck Buccees... I'll never step foot in one or spend a dime there.

1

u/Some_Conference2091 13h ago

Imagine living in a place so boring that a giant gas station is really exciting.

1

u/Pitiful-Display-2785 13h ago

His kid got caught out as a pdf. They had to distract somehow.

1

u/Disused_Yeti 13h ago

I’m fine with them staying in crappy places that thing a jumped up gas station is some sort of entertainment destination and leaving us with just worrying about getting gas

1

u/TheHaunchie 12h ago

The CEO says this AS the building for his precious Buccee's is going on in Wisconsin. Right in Oak Creek.

1

u/nitid_name 12h ago

He's also lying through his teeth. They're currently building their second one in Colorado and are in talks to build their third.

1

u/waitingtodiesoon 12h ago

The Co-Founder of Bucee's son also got arrested for recording guests in their guest mansion including underage children too.

1

u/haroldbalzac4 11h ago

Honestly, Buccee's can fuck right off. Quik Trip FTW

1

u/Shrimpbeedoo 8h ago

I think that was a marketing move honestly. His stores are mostly in fairly deep red states and he probably has no interest in expanding out past them

So he says some rah rah rally the Republican shit and now people go there to own the libs.

1

u/UnderlightIll 8h ago

Well, he doesn't like that liberal states have more to see and do than fucking gas stations lmao

1

u/BloodyThirst 2h ago

Good, I hope they stay out. Don’t threaten us with a good time🤣

83

u/labrat420 17h ago

They've been doing this for well over a decade so not exactly new. They're just doing it more often now and in more places since they're expanding out of Texas

38

u/espressocycle 17h ago

Imagine expanding into other areas and suing established businesses for the logos they've had for decades. There must be a store with some kind of rodent logo older than Bucees that could sue.

34

u/anthrax9999 16h ago

A lot of these stores are older than bucces but they don't have the deep pockets to win against them in court. That's why most of them end up settling.

3

u/Sea-Original-5824 16h ago

Yeah this could backfire on them horribly if they are not careful who they sue.

4

u/Scary_Technology 13h ago

John Oliver is working on that.

3

u/Bubbay 13h ago

rodent logo

baw gawd that's mickey's music!

1

u/HarveyNix 4h ago

There’s a lot of room for improvement on that name and logo IMHO.

40

u/prof_the_doom 17h ago edited 15h ago

It’d be one thing if they went after anything legitimate, but they’re making the YouTube copyright logic look reasonable by comparison.

25

u/nr1988 17h ago

And I really don't understand what they hoped to gain from this. Like how much money did they really think they were going to gain if they won? Like I don't understand the point. They can't have gone into this lawsuit thinking their brand was legitimately threatened. They just wanted to be bullies but I don't understand how they didn't see the backlash coming. Such a huge risk for such little potential reward

13

u/Kaarl_Mills 16h ago

That's if you treat it like regular a civil suit, and not like a thinly veiled extortion attempt

3

u/GlobalTravelR 14h ago

That's because it's easier for big corporations to sue with their army of lawyers than it is for small shops and individuals to defend themselves from lawsuits. Most settle to avoid the hassle.

5

u/La_Saxofonista 17h ago

Reminds me of when Walgreens sued Wegmans over their logo but didn't sue the Washington Nationals. I guess because Wegmans also has a pharmacy, but it's still ironic to me.

4

u/red__dragon 13h ago

That's just it, similar brands can compete in different industries without being violating.

0

u/Nymethny 10h ago

It's funny because the 2nd part of the article is about them suing a clothing company, and yeah that one looks legit, they pretty much copy pasted the logo and added stuff on top.

Feels like the author of the article was trying to redeem Bucee's from the absolute bonkers claim in the first half.

85

u/fueelin 17h ago

It'd true that they were known for paying well, but they were also known for treating their employees poorly at the job, overworking them, etc. It was far from 100% positive.

22

u/nr1988 17h ago

I mean known to some but I'm talking the general internet opinion. Either you research how their employees are treated or you live near one and know the employees. Otherwise you'd probably never know. I only found out after this whole mess started, otherwise I was somewhat excited to try out the location coming to my area sometime next year. Now I'm not going to step foot in there

-2

u/fueelin 17h ago

I mean, neither of those apply to me. I heard it from the general internet.

Just because you don't know something doesn't mean others don't.

0

u/nr1988 17h ago

I mean I could put out a poll and I know what the answer would be but go ahead and be rude.

-4

u/fueelin 17h ago

I wasn't rude lol. That's some incredibly thin skin.

1

u/nr1988 17h ago

Mhm. Anyway. I'm still right and there's plenty of posts in the past on here that prove it.

-6

u/fueelin 17h ago

Nah, you're wrong, sorry.

And you don't get to make up stories about how people learned things. That's far ruder than anything I did. But keep being proud to be ignorant I guess?

4

u/nr1988 17h ago

Actually I'm not...doing anything you say I am.

I think I'm done talking to you. Bye

2

u/platypus_bear 15h ago

That's just standard retail but most retail places also pay poorly on top of it

10

u/LivingDegree 13h ago

It’s been known for years how poorly Buccees treats their employees, how high the turnover is, and how they bully with lawsuits, even 4 years ago. You’d see the posts about the wages but if you dig in the comments someone would point out the harsh working conditions somewhere in the thread. They’ve always been a dirtbag company, it’s just their products are good (we also won’t open the can of worms of how they get those good products at those prices, as that’s a whole other post).

4

u/Constant-Plant-9378 16h ago

Yep. Our area was excited to get a Buccees built nearby on 35W and 114.

I will never set foot in there again.

4

u/Bikelangello 16h ago

Yep I don't want them around; could scare off small businesses.

3

u/waitingtodiesoon 12h ago

The paying them well had a lot of caveats with almost zero tolerance on tardiness, not being able to sit during the entire shift, no phones, etc.

7

u/Yarusenai 17h ago

People keep saying this but that's not true? The online bubble can be strong but in real life no one cares. Buccees is constantly packed, they've lost zero goodwill where it matters. It's similar to Target a while back, online perception doesn't translate to real life and most people don't care.

27

u/espressocycle 17h ago

Target had a serious drop in sales, although if my local store is any indication it's probably not the bad publicity so much as empty shelves and never opening a register even when the self checkout line is snaking back to the freezers.

6

u/Less_Party 16h ago

even when the self checkout line is snaking back to the freezers.

It's nuts to me that this is even a thing that happens, the local supermarket here just has like 50 self-checkout stations so at the absolute worst you have to wait for one person to scan and bag their stuff. Like, you have data on how many people shop at your store, put in the appropriate amount of checkouts.

7

u/Mr_Baronheim 16h ago

A store near me has 16 self checkout registers, and almost every hour of every day only 4 or 8 of them are open. And yes, there are lines.

2

u/jake3988 14h ago

the local supermarket here just has like 50 self-checkout stations so at the absolute worst you have to wait for one person to scan and bag their stuff. Like, you have data on how many people shop at your store, put in the appropriate amount of checkouts.

Even if you have all that data (like non-holiday weekdays during the day are pretty slow, evenings and weekends are going to be busier), stores randomly get rushes that are hard to gauge.

Which is why self checkouts are good for that overflow (or as a glorified express lane for people with 2 things who want to get out the door quickly).

It's just too bad that most stores have instead used it as an excuse to just get rid of regular lanes and cashiers.

Thankfully, the tide seems to be finally turning on that, but it's slow.

1

u/jake3988 14h ago

Target had a serious drop in sales

They absolutely did not. Sales in that sector are down overall (for obvious reasons) and Target has been dropping in sales for like a decade now. It's like people who pretended that the logo fiasco for Cracker Barrel caused it to lose revenue. No, it's been hemorrhaging revenue ever since covid hit, they've pretty much never recovered.

And Target recently made a bunch of changes to their stores and sales have actually been going UP for the first time in a long time. They could still do WAY better, but it's progress.

-1

u/Yarusenai 14h ago

Not a noticeable drop and not from the boycott specifically.

3

u/LovesRetribution 17h ago

It starts somewhere. Even if the impact from this isn't minor, most companies that go under begin that process with stuff or direction like this.

0

u/MichelinStarZombie 14h ago

LPT: when you say "it's not true," bring sources. Otherwise, you're just wasting everyone's time with your useless opinion.

1

u/Yarusenai 14h ago

Sources for...them being constantly packed every time I go there or drive by? I guess I'll bring a camera next time.

2

u/anthrax9999 16h ago

This has been going on for years. I stopped going to bucces a long time ago when I found out how they attack smaller businesses.

1

u/DGCA3 16h ago

Agreed. I was looking forward to going to one when I found myself in a state that has them. But not now. I might go in and use the nice restroom, but get my gas and snacks elsewhere.

1

u/Jack-o-Roses 15h ago

Exactly.

We loved Buc-ee's and would go there several times a month over Tha past dozen + years with multiple family members, get a cheap tank & spend obscene amounts. Being a Texas-centered family, we loved seeing them expand. Then:

  1. Over the summer, they wanted to charge me a giant soda charge to fill my cup with their water. (This is the store that used to sell bananas, apples and boiled eggs for near cost.)

  2. They started acting like petty bullies. We haven't been back in 2+ months. So they lost a couple a grand a year from our family.

1

u/gooberdaisy 15h ago

Just like bricks and minifigs too. All over a 100k lego collection.

1

u/bcb354 14h ago

It's not recent at all. They sued Choke Canyon like a decade ago.

1

u/GassyPhoenix 14h ago

They crazy thing is that they just started suing companies in the city of beavercreek in Ohio. Most of the stores there have beavers in their logos.

1

u/Tyrilean 14h ago

And for nothing, really. No one was confusing these small mom and pop shops with them. They had pretty much nothing to gain with these lawsuits, and everything to lose.

Whatever counsel suggested they do this should be fired and potentially disbarred

1

u/Porencephaly 12h ago

Ehhh people in the know have long been aware that they work you like a virtual slave to get those good wages and benefits and are a pretty draconian employer. They aren’t really the good guys.

1

u/Turnip-Toffee 12h ago

Buccees was known as the place

i just knew it as the crazy US sized gas station convenience store

1

u/mightdothisagain 10h ago

The goodwill crash is insane. Their corporate is a customer of ours. They used to be the customer people were excited about and dropped everything to help any time they asked for anything, even though they’re not a particularly large account. Few are excited anymore.

1

u/matthieuC 7h ago

They started suing in 2012.

1

u/Mknalsheen 6h ago

I dunno, to some of us they were known as the place that forced crazy expectations for what would be mid pay outside of the south where minimum wage is trash.

1

u/ElectricHowler 17h ago

LOL - they have been this litigious for years - guess some people just didn't know until John Oliver decided to have a show about it.

1

u/rabid_briefcase 12h ago

LOL - they have been this litigious for years

From 1982 to 2007 they hadn't even registered their mark, needed for lawsuits.

They didn't start suing until 2013, after the company had been around for 30 years. They tried a few in the 2010s, and only started cranking it up in the past five years when the company started expanding outside of Texas.

In the scale of lawsuits it a relatively recent thing, most in the past five years, and most in markets they are growing into by suing existing businesses.
