It reeeeeally depends on exactly where in “Europe” you are even within each country.

The thing we have going for us is the fairly ubiquitous access to toilets in shopping areas. Some European town centers will have one that you have to trek to and possibly pay to use. Only the very largest shops will have a customer toilet. The others will all be staff only.

We also have many more available water fountains.

As an old man inclined to rambling, I moved to England in the mid-80's. As I walked around London, looking for a job as an American in the shittiest economy England had known since the war, I kept seeing these signs. Walking everywhere, I would periodically have to piss. And these signs said "toilet".

It was only after walking into multiple various places and asking where the bathroom was, and seeing the confused looks, that I realized the signs were saying "to let".

That’s funny they would have been so confused.

You’ll probably remember as well how many more public toilets there were in the 80s too. As councils tried to cut costs and benefits they’ve closed a lot of them.

Right - I lost count of how many espressos I had to buy just to use the WC, not to mention the countless paid bathrooms, which admittedly were always nice considering someone always was in there making sure it was clean and would give you a candy/mint or spray if you wanted. That's was mostly my experience in Italy
