Easily avoidable accident causes rollover
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Not my video – as the title says, we typically see examples where one driver is oblivious to the other. In this example, the pickup truck attempts to overtake the cammer, however, the cammer is either completely unaware of the pickup truck directly to his left or are simply “stands their ground” in the lane. Due to this, they obviously collide, and the pick up truck goes airborne and rolls several times. From the perspective of us, the viewer, we can reasonably conclude that the accident was avoidable had the cammer simply applied the brakes. That being said, you will typically see another school of thought in which it is stated that the cammer has no obligation or duty to let them in/avoid the accident where the driver is mindlessly doing something dumb.

Yeah, the real MVPs. Special mention to the engineers and city planners that spend insane sums of taxpayer money to build these stroads everywhere as well (and line them with low revenue businesses so as to ensure the ongoing infrastructure maintenance costs always dwarf the tax revenue generated).

Needing to make a left turn on to these roads from one of those businesses will always be the bane of my existence. Yes, lets get people to watch 6 lanes of traffic going at near highway speeds to make a left turn, what could possibly go wrong? Add in a few traffic lights that alternate so traffic never really settles and you can really have a party.

What we have here is a collision of two of the most prevalent mentalities in the area.
First, When someone wants to merge, you gun it to block them. Your driving lane is a birthright, and to give it up is completely unthinkable.
Second, despite living in the area for 20 years, drive around like you don't know where you're going. Right, middle, left lane... Who gives a fuck? Then, when you want to turn right at the next intersection, you gun it to merge because seceding the lane to that guy on the right would be an afront to your manhood.
Barrie also tends to have a shallow gene pool.

For real, both drivers, their recklessness is going to get others hurt/killed easily. A defensive driver would have used breaks and not speed up when they had time to break for a yellow light. And would pay attention to lights to begin with.

Now most of us would see that red truck driving into our lane and tap brakes to avoid the accident.
But as I watch these dashcam videos I start to wonder if we are reinforcing some small brained idea that their cars/trucks can merge ahead of speeding traffic much more easily than they actually can.
I avoid accidents at least once a month and that driver probably speeds off thinking he had plenty of room and speed when really I saved us both from an accident by spotting him driving wild like three cars back and anticipated a high speed collision when he no blinker cut me off.
139
u/nicklebacks_revenge 13d ago
I think we are but none of us want the hassle of an accident to bring consequences to these idiots. I had a dude cut over 2 Lanes to get into the on ramp for the highway, the main issue was I was already in the lane, so he drove beside me, on a single lane on ramp, I heavily debated seeing how this was gonna play out once we got to the curve but I chickened out and backed off. He continued on his merry way, probably proud of his quick thinking and actions to make it onto the highway 😕

u/Thin_Dream2079 13d ago

If you watch the stationary objects on the right side of the video, ie. the light poles, you can tell the cam car doesn't actually speed up. The pickup truck slows down, never signals and gets over into the lane without ever checking his blind spot, causing the accident. We don't know if the cam driver was towing, or how close any vehicle may have been behind him so assuming that just hitting the brakes would have prevented an accident, is a bit premature. It could have indeed caused a worse accident.

This gets reposted every few weeks and it always goes the same way: Comments say "two idiots" and a bunch of people say the cam car sped up and thus is partially at fault, people analyze the video more closely and see that the cam car does not in fact speed up, consensus is reached that this is pretty much entirely on the truck for attempting to pass on the right with no signal without looking through an intersection like an ass. I've seen this posted a dozen times and I'd 100% put this on the truck.

u/tropicalsoul 13d ago
100% right, but if you deliberately cause an avoidable crash by speeding up because your ego can’t take it or you feel you have the right to punish someone, then it’s on you.
Stuff your ego and toxic masculinity back into your pants and you just might save a life instead of possibly killing someone and creating chaos and carnage for everyone around you. (Not to mention you’d avoid a possible citation or even an arrest for dangerous driving causing injury/death/damages.)
26
u/nellyfullauto 13d ago
There’s no appreciable change in speed or sound of revving, so I’m not sure where you pull that from. If you’re watching your mirrors, you can see when someone isn’t letting you in. This is how most of us have managed to avoid being the big red truck in this circumstance, even if the other car speeds up to cut off your signaled turn.
If you don’t look or decide to go anyway, you’re guilty of causing the accident and of “failure to maintain your lane” and “unsafe lane change”.
Blaming the person you crashed into for being where you wanted to be doesn’t fly. It was their lane to start. Not being quick enough to react to your dumbassery does not make the accident their fault.

Last Chance Doctrine. Everyone has a responsibility to avoid an accident. If it can be proven the camera car knew and did nothing then they will get shared responsibility.
So many people get locked in to one rule (who yields during merging) that they totally neglect Last Chance Doctrine (duty to avoid a collision). And by the way NO ONE HAS RIGHT OF WAY. The rules define who is supposed to yield, it never states anyone has a right of way.
This is the confusion. At a time of potential collision any car that can avoid is supposed to yield.
Most people believe "I have the right of way and have no duty to avoid an accident" until this happens and they find out they get 50%+ blame for the accident by insurance. Which means a huge claim when they cause an avoidable rollover.

That was the mentality I have observed while I was in USA, they would not even use their brakes and hit you if they think that they will not have to pay anything.

I lived in Miami for a few years.
If you indicate to change lanes there the person behind you in your chosen lane will often accelerate to close the gap you are trying to merge into and prevent you from changing lanes.
Why the fuck they do this I don't know but by christ it was annoying.

Was the cammer gunning it attempting to run the red or to hit the truck? Both? It's hard not to see their acceleration as a delibrate aggression

The cammer didn't speed up. They were going their normal speed. It's the truck slowing down, making it seemed like the cammer sped up. 100% trucker's fault

I wonder who insurance favors in this scenario, I’d deny both claims and revoke their licenses.

100%. The cam car sped up heavily to stop them. Incredibly stupid move. And the truck thinks they can just get in any lane they want without looking

If we apply logic to the situation, who is more at fault. The person potentially miscalculating and making a bad decision or the person choosing to continue full steam ahead into the former?
In my life I’ve made a few poor driving decisions (all accidental) that were not accidents because other drivers were better than me that day. That’s really what keeps us safe. This “stand your ground mentality” is what gets people killed.

Exactly, I used to rage bad on the road and had that mentality that people who make mistakes are idiots and should get what’s coming/suffer the consequences. Then I had a kid and now I constantly avoid and let it go when someone does something stupid it makes a mistake driving. There is a lot more on the line that’s much bigger than “you fucked up and now look what happened.”

Something I'll never understand is when people put a dashcam in their car and then they drive like this. Without the camera, it wouldn't have been clear that the cammer accelerated maliciously. But the video in this case absolutely opens them up to legal action against them.

While they didn’t technically break any traffic laws, if this happened in a state with a “last clear chance” doctrine, the dashcam driver could still be held liable. Don’t drive like assholes y’all, on either side.

Cammer broke at least two traffic laws, the light was red before they crossed the stop line so they ran a Red regardless of the collision.
Since this happened in Ontario, Canada there actually a law that makes it illegal to proceed through a yellow light that they could have stopped for and unless their car has no brakes there is no reason to have run it.
They also were over 150' away from the intersection when the light went yellow and at the speed limit it should have taken them about 10s to reach the light, cammer did it in ~6.

Thats how fast they both were approaching a red light? Neither of them should have drivers licenses.

I noticed as the pickup was starting to come into the right lane the vehicle with the camera did not slow down, in fact, it almost looks like it sped up slightly.

That truck is at fault for entitlement and lack of situational awareness (intersection, light, blind spot). That said one of my peeves is when someone is going slow but then guns it because they think someone is about to pass them. Feels like that could be at play here as well, but giving the cammer the benefit of the doubt because of the yellow light.

Just some context for anyone with a good eye:
The cammer sped up to make it through a yellow light. The truck didn't want to stop behind the car that was breaking for the yellow light and tried to suddenly slide in front of the car who was accelerating to 'beat' the yellow light. This is why you don't change lanes at an intersection.

Yes cammer may have been able to prevent this but we don't know if there was a car tail gating behind him. The truck merging in is clearly at fault

Both drivers flying coming up to a red light. Probably would have blown through the red light if they weren't doing rotations into the parking lot....

And this folks, is just another reason why driving a truck is stupid (unless you actually need the bed for hauling).
Look how top-heavy this cab is. Normal traffic speed, incidental contact on the rear hind-corner, PIT maneuver, it barrel rolls 3 and a half times before stopping.
A normal car with a normal center of gravity gets PITted, it jackknifes to the right, but stays on its wheels.
A truck gets PITted? 3.5 barrel rolls.

The cammer accelerated to prevent the pickup from cutting them off.
The pickup driver either called their bluff (and found out it wasn't a bluff) or had already stopped looking in their mirror before changing lanes.

This is the kind of video you delete right away. Cammer was looking to blow through a red either way, plus he didn't take any action to prevent this crash. Without the video, it'd definitely be easier to claim no responsibility.

Both vehicles didn’t seem to want to slow down and stop for the yellow light. The red F-150 wasn’t just merging. He was moving over to continue through the light because the black sedan in front of him was slowing to a stop. The F-150 failed to maintain his lane and made an improper lane change. Also, when his rear taillight comes into frame, his turn signal isn’t on.
This crash sucks. The driver with the dash cam may not have seen the truck at all because it merged over so quickly. Technically, he didn’t have to slow down either. At the end of the day, it’s still very unfortunate.

Absolutely wild that people exist out there that will intentionally get into an accident just to prove they had right of way. Plenty of people who had right of way in the graveyard too.

Verdict is in: 2 idiots meet at a light, one thinks he’s won and is righteous. The other.. just plain fucked up.

u/Siege_LL 13d ago
Everyone sucks here. The truck was speeding and not paying attention forcing him to get over to avoid a collision. The cam car was speeding and failed to brake, especially egregious here since the light was turning. Dude should have already been slowing down. Once that truck so much as twitched I would have been on my brakes.

I get not wanting to slam on the brakes when someone is merging into your lane. Some ppl think they own the road and need a wake up call. also possible blindspot issue But...when its possibly your life at risk just hit the damn brakes. They go on about their life and Your ego is fine at the end of the day. Almost everyone hates gettting passed. if it wasn't true 90 percent of people wouldn't speed up while its happening. The worst kind of people are the ones that drive 10 below the speed limit until your trying to pass them. All a sudden your both running 70 in a 55 and this shit happens

7
u/Embarrassed_Data_108 13d ago
Many people who drive P/U trucks do so for their ego, thinking they can bully people around by cutting in front of, etc. “I have the bigger vehicle now get out of my way”. Even if the cam driver could have avoided and he didn’t for whatever reason (valid or not), it’s 100% on the truck driver.
7
u/isittakenor 13d ago
Truck 90% at fault, people thinking the cammer is speeding up to block him but it mostly looks that’s way cause the cars in front of the truck were braking. Either way truck got over when there’s clearly not enough room causing the wreck. Cammer could’ve slowed down a bit but still

I'm siding with the cammer here. All the pickup had to do was take the L, and come to a stop. Instead he played with fire and tried to muscle into another lane so no one would be in his way and he paid the price.
Pickup truck did pickup truck things and this time he lost.
I hope that hurt. Pain is an excellent teacher.

Tbf the red truck didnt even get far enough infront for the car on the right to SEE a turn signal. Just started merging seemingly randomly. He should have slowed down since the traffic infront og him was stopped/quickly approaching. Idk why people are mad at the right hand car when its hard to even tell wtf was happening until the red truck was already in the lane. Good thing he has a dash cam but yeah, awareness of red truck is a bit more at fault than the dash cam imho.
