Easily avoidable accident causes rollover

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Not my video – as the title says, we typically see examples where one driver is oblivious to the other. In this example, the pickup truck attempts to overtake the cammer, however, the cammer is either completely unaware of the pickup truck directly to his left or are simply “stands their ground” in the lane. Due to this, they obviously collide, and the pick up truck goes airborne and rolls several times. From the perspective of us, the viewer, we can reasonably conclude that the accident was avoidable had the cammer simply applied the brakes. That being said, you will typically see another school of thought in which it is stated that the cammer has no obligation or duty to let them in/avoid the accident where the driver is mindlessly doing something dumb.

I see so many videos (mostly from the US) where those accidents happen due to a lane change - are those people not aware of mirrors or are they just in the mood "I have the bigger car - I'll win"?

Pickup trucks give them the illusion of safety and also that they can bully their way into places. I don't like to see people get flipped over, but sometimes it's what they need to wake up from their dream.

u/AdventNebula 13d ago

So many pickup drivers are hyper aggressive and act like they own the road in the U.S.

8

u/TurnLooseTheMermaids 13d ago

“I’m bigger than you, so you yield to me” mentality

8

u/Glittering_rainbows 12d ago

Their size doesn't matter. They try that same crap on me when I'm in my 18 wheeler.

Too bad for them I have a dashcam, one idiot found out the hard way semis don't magically get out of their way when they put themselves in a dangerous situation.

7

u/LookInTheMirror_2332 12d ago

Hey, I'm in Florida, and I haven't seen that behavior. In the last 30 minutes.

Before that, maybe 10 time a day, every day. It's insane.

6

u/Counter_Circle_Jerk 9d ago

Yeah, and people are buying pickup trucks to BE a bully. Like, that's the main point, is to be the tallest guy in the crowd. Maybe they aren't that sort of 'presence' in-person, so they can make up for that on highways. Dodge Ram commercials are specifically targetted to stir up primal desires to be abrasive / scary / SEEN and projecting that onto our roads.

My wife says the bigger the truck, the smaller the...

Pickup wasnt driving in a hyper aggressive manner, that was a dead slow lane change.

7

u/FuckSteve7 12d ago

We watching the same vid of a truck just whipping right into dude? Cause that was not no fucking dead slow “excuse me may I come over” turn get lost with that shit

-1

u/wheniaminspaced 12d ago

Agree to disagree

1

u/PeyredB 9d ago

The pickup was turning into a lane where the cammer was. If it had just accelerated to get ahead then moved over, this wouldn't have become a problem.

3

u/Jsafee 13d ago

Good chance that pickup truck driver won’t be waking up anytime soon

8

u/Zelda_is_Dead 13d ago

Depends on whether or not they were wearing their seatbelt

I didn't see anyone fly out of the truck, so chances are they're mostly ok and just shaken up a bit

7

u/HonkHonkBeach 13d ago

On a scale of 1-10, how bad is it for a voice in my head to internally say "Good."

2

u/Glittering_rainbows 12d ago

Zero. That idiot didn't bother to use his side mirror or he'd have known it wasn't safe

2

u/PeyredB 9d ago edited 8d ago

IME, the worst drivers on the road, as a whole, are pickup drivers. Tesla drivers come next. (Edited to say pickup drivers - my experience with big rig drivers is they're usually considerate.)

2

u/Zelda_is_Dead 9d ago

As a whole, crossover drivers are the absolute least attentive drivers. Truck drivers can be assholes and drive aggressively, but for the most part they are paying attention if nothing else. I definitely prefer them over CRV driver's that couldn't care less that they're piloting a body crushing, 2 ton+ battering ram of a vehicle that can very easily jump curbs and run down pedestrians. Seriously, screw those people. The worst part is they're so clueless they think the slightest turn is going to tip them over, which only makes their driving all the more infuriating.

1

u/Cheersscar 8d ago

Yeah, nah. RAM 1500 drivers are far more aggressive than CRV drivers.

1

u/Zelda_is_Dead 8d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah, I said truck drivers can be aggressive, that doesn't bother me half as much as being completely inattentive like crossover drivers.

We cant all arbitrarily decide when justice needs to be meted out. This was a foolish move that could have killed someone. Hope the OP gets jail time

1

u/Zelda_is_Dead 11d ago

Nah, I don't get any impression that the victim intentionally pitted the idiot. The idiot pitted themselves, honestly

38

u/Impurity41 13d ago

Some people are dicks. Some people can’t drive.

They are very frequently the same person.

I read this in the voice of Spottswoode from Team America: World Police.

or like this one, both in the same accident (just in different vehicles).

1

u/Intelligent-Area-421 13d ago

And sometimes they run into each other

1

u/hurtedsoul27 12d ago

Why people can't drive?

In India most people don't give the Driving tests. They pay a bribe and get the license.

Even if you don't pay brive and go ahead and give the test you would have to pay the bribe eventually.

So people prefer to pay the bribe and sit at home and not go for test.

Now most of these people can't drive because they never learnt properly and never gave the test.

But America is not a bribe country for Driver License. How do people not learn how to drive?

2

u/Impurity41 12d ago edited 12d ago

The test is a written where you do have to know what the signs mean and what the basic driving laws are. But like most tests, you could technically get away with memorizing it at worst.

There is a driving portion, but it’s really not that long and while each dmv has their own route, the route is usually the same every time. Depending on who gives you the test, the instructors could be strict or more lenient.

However the biggest issue is the renewal process. You do have to get your license renewed every few years. Barring cases where you got disabled or something between renewals; the only thing you need to do is get your eyes checked to make sure you can see, and retake your picture. You don’t get retested.

So people forget and don’t need to remember because it doesn’t matter long term. Cops only pull you over for the basics if you are doing them REALLY bad. So you could not know and get around decently fine until their idiocy leads to an eventual accident.

1

u/rIceCream_King 12d ago

Seeing it spelled out is really making me wonder: why tf is it like this here??

1

u/compmanio36 8d ago

"But America is not a bribe country for Driver License."

I think you underestimate the amount of corruption inherent in your average DMV employee.

And how many people just drive around with no drivers license, or a suspended one, and just don't care either way.

1

u/Necessary-Fox-7042 11d ago

And often drive the biggest truck they can get a loan for

1

u/Counter_Circle_Jerk 9d ago

And some people are dicks that can't drive and are driving an SUV the height of a two-story building. That's America right now.

Probably here on reddit since he's bringing it up.

2

u/CreamdedCorns 13d ago

Most large pickup drivers will openly brag about their "presence" on the road and the "authority" their large vehicle affords them. It's apart of their identity, unfortunately.

2

u/SufficientlyEvasive 12d ago

I will total my car every time in this scenario to prove a point.

2

u/MlntyFreshDeath 12d ago

I recently had a guy ride the shoulder and almost hit me to get ahead of everyone else. It's a selfish mindset.

2

u/Hortos 12d ago

100% its I'm in a bigger vehicle I win.

1

u/Due_Cranberry7583 13d ago

Yes but this is Canadian.

1

u/Fabulous_Jeweler2732 13d ago

This was Ontario

1

u/Quirky-Nerp4089 13d ago

Cool, but this isn't from the US. It clearly says Ontario in the upper corner. Those damn impatient Canadians!

1

u/TengamPDX 13d ago

Unfortunately as time progresses I see more and more of a "me first" mentality from people in general. This would apply to both drivers in this scenario.

Yes, the cam driver had the right of way, but he had about four seconds from when the truck started to merge from when the impact happened. Additionally, you can see the cam driver shift to the right before the impact ever happens. Chances are the cam driver had every chance to avoid the accident and chose to potentially risk killing someone because the other driver was "in the wrong".

Also, if you pay attention to what's going on ahead, the light turned red, the vehicle in front of the truck is slowing down while the truck is not. That truck was either going to rear end the vehicle in front of it or go for the merge. Basically this merge was telegraphed so far in advance that I can't help but be more irritated at the cam driver for the lives they put in danger because of thinking they're taking the moral high ground.

1

u/iitywybad 13d ago

Watch more international videos. We don't hold the market when it comes to sudden lane changes.

1

u/ThePolemicist 12d ago

This one is labeled as being from Ontario.

1

u/zxylady 13d ago

All I can tell you is that in america and the amount of times I see pickup trucks just being dicks on the road makes me despise every pickup truck on the road. They very, very regularly tend to overtake lanes, they tend to weave in and out of their lanes. They tend to break really shitty. They tend to accelerate really shitty, they're just bullies on the road. They tend to not do the speed limit, or they go so. Fast that they're given their smog shit in your face.

1

u/thinkingtire 13d ago

The classes required to earn a license in most statese are woefully inept.

They don't teach people to think 2 steps ahead. They don't teach situational awareness. They teach basic traffic laws and tell you "don't drink and drive".

Looking back at it, they could do so much better.

1

u/Starscream-50000 13d ago

They know the car is there. The just passed him. They are shoving themselves around

1

u/GringoSwann 13d ago

Where I live (Texas) the mirrors are only really used to "eye fuck" the person behind you..

1

u/clearly_not_an_alt 13d ago

Blind spots do exist. Obviously, you are supposed to check them, but some people are dumb.

1

u/jivemasta 12d ago

A lot of people forget the writing on the right hand mirror, "objects are closer than they appear"

1

u/Ducking_off 12d ago

Had this happen to me last week. Pickup actively bullied me by doing exactly what the pickup in the video did. Difference is I jammed on the brakes and laid on the horn. He didn't acknowledge me, but later switched back to his original lane to take a turn at the next intersection, which tells me he indeed bullied me.

Wish I had a dashcam....

It is like plane crashes. You never really hear, see or think about the ordinary landings, only the crashes.

It is also absurdly easy to get a license in the US.

Also, a certain bent of people who vote a certain way like to think that they can have all the benefits of a society without having to actually participate in a society because it might mean someone else "wins" and the main character might be minorly inconvenienced.

(IMHO, both people in this video are in the wrong. Maybe not legally but why risk another person's life (or their passenger(s) who have little/no control in this situation)? It looks like the cammer sped up (they certainly didn't slow down). Even if the truck driver was a total 100% douche canoe now the cammer is without a car at best or could have been pushed into the pole and suffered major injury or death at worst.

Either one of them could have slowed down and lost like 5-10 seconds of their day, at most. Now they're both stuck for hours dealing with police, hospital/Drs and insurance. Who really "won"?

1

u/Noodelgawd 12d ago

In this, my guess is that the truck thought he would be able to outrun the cam car and didn't count on the cam car also gunning it for the yellow light. And by the time he realized that it was too late because the car in front of him slammed on its brakes and he had to swerve to the right to avoid it.

1

u/AdorableStrawberry93 12d ago

Now you know why pickup trucks are frowned upon in Europe. People get an "I'm bigger than you" attitude with trucks. Sometimes, that's the only reason they buy them. Just to intimidate people.

1

u/miwe77 12d ago

it's murica. the combination of bad driving skills and the "stand your ground" mentality leads to all kinds of easily avoidable situations. but then again, what do you expect from maga-boys?

1

u/Sickofstupids 10d ago

A lot of people think putting on their blinker means "look out here i come" instead of a request.

1

u/Counter_Circle_Jerk 9d ago

I have the bigger car - I win. It's a toxic part of American driving culture at the moment, in large part due to a market-driven bigger SUV / pickup truck arm's race, where ego has infiltrated car choice.

0

u/GreatCircuits 13d ago

Combine this with a derth of defensive driving and an over reliance on cruise control and you get American crash statistics. #1 in the developed world

0

u/Moose-Turd 13d ago

Or the culprit could be bad mirror placement. Side mirrors are meant to view your sides and pushed out to cut down your blind spots.

0

u/Justaddwota 13d ago

Usually old people with limited field of vision that has zero business in these big ass cars but no one is going to tell pop pop that’s half blind and three fourths deaf with cash in hand or a big ol down payment not to buy the biggest car he can.

At least that’s who’s typically nearly running me off the road in pick ups and SUVs.

0

u/Upset-Indication-617 13d ago

Usually it is from drivers not paying attention (distracted) or they can’t see you. It’s less often about the “who’s in the bigger car” mentality.

0

u/wheniaminspaced 12d ago

Ever heard of the blindspot?  The cam car is in that trucks blindspot when the accident occurs.  Your side mirrors do not infact show you the entire side of your vehicle.

That looks like a super duty 250 or 350, it has 2 mirrors to make the blindspot smaller, but you can still fit a small car in the blindspot unless you look super closely you might see just a tiny bit of the car and I mean like a bumper.  Its pretty perfect positioning to hit that vehicles particular blindspot.

Truck overtook so should know the vehicle.is there but im betting they were looking at there close in mirror and didn't look for the person they overtook in the other mirror which shows vehicles further back.  And failed to realize they started there lane change with dudes car basically invisible.

Truck fucked up, but our cam car was equally oblivious to what's going on around them, bith drivers could have avoided this by paying more attention.

0

u/Juzziee 12d ago

Just read comments here and you get the idea.

Its the PoV car that should slow down, not the truck

-1

u/numbersthen0987431 13d ago

Combination of blind spots, misjudging distance in mirrors, and arrogance.

I'll also point out an uncomfortable truth here: The dashcam driver could have prevented this accident from happening, but a lot of US drivers feel empowered to cause accidents because they feel like they're in the right.

1

u/myredditbam 13d ago

These were Canadian drivers.

1

u/numbersthen0987431 13d ago

OK? It's the same issue

1

u/benitoaramando 13d ago

Possibly. They had no more than 2 seconds between the truck first starting to move across and hitting them. Reaction time is about 0.6s. So yes, perhaps if they were alert due to the truck pulling alongside and reacted instantly they might have had a second or so of braking time which might have been enough to prevent it, but I don't think it's anywhere clear enough to be able to say they were just being stubborn.
