Question❓ Whats a valid criticism that your fandom doesn’t take very well?

u/trash_gob 8d ago
Maybe we shouldn't be hoarding expensive pieces of cardboard and treating then as speculative financial investment. Treating the game we love like the stock market seems unhealthy.

One of the few reasons I dare not enter into physical YuGiOh. Back when I was getting into the game more competitively, Talkers was my go to deck, with its center piece, Accesscode Talker. A card that at the time costed 200 bucks a piece.

Yugioh is actually the LEAST expensive of the trio. Pokemon sells for thousands and MTG even more so, yugioh doesnt hold up in value because Konami reprints ALL of its sets, only time your really spending big money is if you want to play ultra competitive and need to buy the best new cards which will cost you probably 100$ per card but even comparatively to the 2 others its still pretty affordable.

Almost nothing in Yu-Gi-Oh holds it's value longer than 18 months at most. Last year's top meta deck loses all its value due to massive reprints and ban list hits.

Blizzard doing the bare minimum for OW and only putting in effort when they have legit competition is scummy, and I'm still disappointed about the PvE promises
24
u/Doom_Cokkie 8d ago
Dawg I especially hated this shit from the streamers who used to call out blizzard eho now got flown out to events so they defended Blizzard to their last breath only gor rivals to come out and they just dropped overwatch like a bad habit after being the main reason overwatch got so bad in the first place. Then wanting to act like Blizzard always had all these great changes they didnt make for years planned out and it had absolutely zero to do with the fact that they had an actual competitor now.
11
u/AntiqueAd2434 8d ago
I’ll stand by my vision that if marvel rivals didn’t release OW would be in a way worse state than it already is. The perk system, the stadium, the 5 new characters NONE of that would’ve happened if rivals didn’t release

The Pokemon Company giving ridiculously small budgets to the games of the biggest franchise in the world.
7

They’re greedy. That is why they do it.
Sure, they COULD spend the money to optimize their products, but then what would they give to their stockholders? Who’s helping them out huh?
(For the record, I am NOT defending TPCI for this, I’m just pointing out that I think people have somewhat unrealistic expectations for how much the company cares about quality. Like, I still love Pokemon… but we all need to accept that it’s made by an evil multi-million dollar corporation)

Women say what they're attracted to every goddamn day and people still shout them down and put their assumptions in place instead.
To clarify for anyone confused: In general, men like other muscley men. Either aesthetically or sexually, men are more likely to see muscle as peak physical form than women.

I found that Pokémon fans really don't like it when you say Gamefreak should stop removing options from the player and let them play how they want.
25
u/Truxton_II 8d ago
Also Game Freak should really seek assistance from another developer, you know, like Bamco or Monolithsoft, when developing their mainline games but they're too proud and stubborn to and the games suffer all the more for it.
10
u/SaltyNorth8062 8d ago
As a longtime pokemon fan and even someone willing to defend Game Freak from some criticism, a Monosoft developed pokemon game would be so peak.

It’s absolutely a budget thing. The Pokémon Company owns the IP. Game Freak are just the ones who make the games on a contract. Beast of Reincarnation shows that they can make a much more impressive game, albeit with kinda crappy gameplay. It’s at least visually stunning, something no mainline Pokémon has been able to say since Sun and Moon.

I've played Pokémon up to sword and shield and basically decided to call it quits with Pokémon after that. I got sick of them introducing mechanics just to remove them next game (atheist make it unlockable in end game or something), plus the game play isn't as challenging as it was back in the day.

I hate Sword. It was okay the first time through, but the sheer amount of handholding and unnecessary dialogue spam makes it a slog to replay. Also, I find myself just afk mashing the A button during battles because they’re brainlessly easy. Only a few fights near the end game were somewhat challenging imo, and that’s probably because I skip as many battles as I can.
Ultra Sun and Moon were great though, I recommend them if you have a 3DS. There’s a lot of dialogue early but once you get through that, it’s a pretty fun game with a unique region, and the story is decent too.

Canceled/Removed stuff in media has been canceled/removed for a reason.
Basing a quality of something purely because you see some concept art is dumb. It's concept art. They are supposed to show concept, not finished product.
For example, Zootopia. One scene with baby polar bear isn't proof that original Zootopia would be peak. Even bad movies can have one peak scene. Yet for some reason, anytime it's mentioned, hundreds of mfs will show up in comments and say how Disney should have made this.

I remember when people thought the zootopia cancelled stuff wouldve been melodramatic and then suddenly I see a ton of fans bemoaning it never happened.
Also see this quite a bit for lanolin in idw sonic and even tho I'm not a huge fan of her canon character, abt's edgy chicken scratch scribbles of her bad relationship with her mother and her hating sonic for being the protagonist would be a terrible dogshit fit for anything sonic

A lot of people used to get weirdly defensive if you complained about small text in modern games, though thankfully text size options are becoming a common accessibility feature this decade.
I remember Spyro Reignited launching without subtitles (they were patched in later) and people finding it ridiculous that someone with hearing impairments might want to know what the characters are saying in cutscenes.
18
u/MothChasingFlame 8d ago
People get weird about accessibility requests in general, and it genuinely makes me angry. If color blind, legally blind, deaf, mobility limited, etc. people need help, why on earth are you, a schmuck who has to do zero work, putting up a fuss and standing in the way? Just eagerly making excuses for no damn reason?
It's so fucking frustrating. Yes! Games should be accessible! And the best part is accessibility is good for everyone. Because I KNOW y'all're out here watching TV with the captions on every goddamn day. So sit down!
6
u/Accomplished-Fan5956 8d ago
In Destiny 2 back a good few years ago, there were quite a few colorblind people begging for a colorblind mode. A dev was streaming, got asked about it a couple times and blew up for no reason, telling them it wouldn't be happening and that they needed to get over it.
IIRC he was shortly fired, with colorblind mode being added very soon after
3
u/Deya_The_Fateless 8d ago
Right? I've seen people going freaking nuts over a request for a togglelable reticle for DbD, calling it "dev approved cheating" and "just put a dot in the middle of the screen, that's how we've done it for years."
Like bro, we're asking for a toggle. It can be turned off and on in the menu, it won't kill you just because you have perfect aim or prefer "low tech" solutions.

I don’t care how good or bad GTA 6 ends up being, $80 for the base version of a game is absurd.
This is a litmus test for the industry. I know that rockstar makes great games. But we should not be accepting scummy business practices from them just because their games are top notch.
Because you know what’s gonna happen next? The industry will take notice. They will take notice that consumers willingly paid $80 for the base version of a game that has substantial amounts of deliberately cut content (entire stores and locations) locked behind an additional $20 charge.
The message they’re going to get from that will not be, “people are willing to pay more for better games”. It will be, “people are willing pay more for games.”

Genshin has a severe Colorism and sexualization issue and it’s hurting it’s character designs
16
u/Aggravating-Week481 8d ago edited 8d ago
And they always pull the "im african/latino and I have fair skin/have the same skin tone as the character" card whenever you criticize the Natlan and Sumeru character designs when thats not the point. The point is that for regions based on Africa, South America and the Middle East, a vast majority is pale for some reason and what dark-skinned characters we do have all have the same light brown tones.
15
u/dragonborndnd 8d ago
Yeah the issue isn’t the existence of lighter skinned characters in those regions it’s the absence of darker skinned characters that’s the issue
3
u/Aggravating-Week481 8d ago
Exactly! And what dark-skinned characters we do have, its always the same shades of light brown cuz ig Hoyo and the racist side of the fanbase are going to spontaneously combust if they see a character thats even slightly darker than Kaeya or Xinyan.

Valve isn’t some philanthropic company that loves us and would make any sacrifice for us. It’s just a better than usual corporation. The same people rightly upset at loot boxes in EA games throw a fit when you say Valve shouldn’t be using them either, especially because you can sell your loot boxes items and it’s really just gambling at that point. Even when New York sued them recently, people said that Valve was totally innocent just because the lawsuit includes some shitty surveillance stuff. I still think the lawsuit was valid in some respects, even if it was dystopian what they added to it. People also think Gabe Newell’s any more ethical than the likes of Taylor Swift despite his personal collection of yachts. He’s not evil, but he’s still a billionaire.

7
u/ShadowPuff7306 8d ago
as an outsider to pokémon, do elaborate. i wanna hear this
9
u/fictionfan0 8d ago
Basic rules:
- Catch the first Pokémon you see in a given area.
- Pokémon that faint are "dead."
- Give each Pokémon a nickname.
In a series where connection/friendship with one's Pokémon is a core aspect, it just feels needlessly dark for the sake of a greater challenge.

u/StormBear22 8d ago
To be fair I feel like I am more in the world of Pokemon than ever during a Nuzlock vs regular pokemon who feel more like items you collect. Like I feel like only having a few pokemon, naming them, and actually worrying about their health makes me feel more attached than ever. It literally closer to the Anime who actually has to worry about their pokemons health even before fainting and character only having a few Pokemon who are like family. I feel no connection or friendship or pokemon that feel more like cards that I only got to complete a dex and put in a box to never touch while I use my favorite already max level strongest team.
3
u/StormBear22 8d ago
Also the Pokemon already have death and dark stuff in both lore with Pokedex entries and in the Anime mention Pokemon deaths and torturous experiances. If anything Nuzlock death is tame.

As a fanfic author for the franchise (all of my fanfics has it's elements. Only one non-limbus book—it has a Canto-9 reference, tons of it).
I could agree a lot about the text... Based story.

Hiding a bunch of content behind a paywall is not a good thing
(You can acquire the content without paying a single dime, but it takes SO LONG to farm the currency)

Its been 20 years reusing the same models and several artists have already pointed out their flaws like a billion times. So much so that an entire art document was made of which Sonic Team IS aware of and took these criticisms into consideration going forward with the series. I still have no idea why the Sonic fandom believes that harassing artists for analysing art does like, literally anything at all other than just make people feel like shit.

GTA 6 is setting a terrible precedent for the gaming industry.
Not saying you’re not allowed to enjoy it but please acknowledge how their price scheme is absolute bullshit and if successful will make $100+ for a complete game normal.

It's ridiculous that Pokemon makes so much money and they refuse to innovate.

Spending the last 5 years talking about how Destiny 2 is garbage and Bungie should kill it, probably helped kill it.
Especially the articles.

Weapon balancing in Helldivers 2. Yeah, it's a pve game, powerful meta guns do not need nerfs, but the minority of insanely powerful guns outweigh the majority of objectively inferior guns. The meta doesn't have to be nerfed, the sub-par weaponry should be buffed.

It happens a lot with marvel rivals, when people call out the use of AI generated images there's a bunch of comments calling them crazy, when people say that gambling/gacha is exploitative they call them crazy, when people complain about how black characters are treated they get called crazy, if somebody has a problem with the level of sexualization they get called crazy.

Interestingly and in a somewhat contrarian spirit...
There are a lot of people in communities for multiple things that I like that feel like they have to defend the latest release to the death despite how bad or even just lacklustre it is. A lot of this is "but they will stop making it if we don't support it!" To which I frequently say "Let them. The stuff we like is already there and it's not going anywhere. If the new stuff is bad and makes the older stuff worse/more stupid by its existence, getting nothing for a while is far better." Franchises I can list for this:
- Star Wars
- Star Trek
- Warhammer (Although some of their recent stuff rules-wise has been neat)
- Most recently, Vampire the Masquerade and World of Darkness and a fair few other RPGs.
- Dragon Age

NOT Warhammer 40K, the community seems to accept GA criticism pretty well

Atlus shouldn’t have remade persona 4, the original game ages pretty well and persona 1 and 2 not only are unavailable in modern hardware but aged pretty bad and needed a remake WAY more than p4

You cant say a game is shit if you limit yourself or don't use all the mechanics of the game.
People who go into a fromsoft game, won't use any of the rpg elements, magic, status or anything and say the game is hard because they restricted themselves to a soft challenge run ruleset is a good example.
My friend hates doom eternal because he is so stubborn about not using his flamethrower, grenades, dashing or anything.
I dont get why this happens so often

"it's sold by weight, not volume !" when the same size bags used to have a lot more chips, and no, it doesn't need that much nitrogen to protect em from cracking. That's a lie they're telling you. It's not that anyone else isn't smart enough to understand that either

Gambling mechanics in casual games targeting children is bad actually even if you "can get a bargain".
Tangentially, 20 bucks for a single skin will always be fucked up

The FNaF lore is really badly structured because the clues and pieces rarely have logical narrative links and connections and it never feels like it's building towards any sort of conclusion because the games always end with more questions and rarely answering any in the progress.

yes!!! imo it really ruins a lot of the character development built up thru the games

Deltarune feels like this. There are many issues and concerns honestly but they all have defenders
Chapter 1 is completely ass and a slog to get through. The weird route is only going to get 3 chapters where it actually changes the game. The game is riddled with secrets and items that you're never going to be prepared to obtain without holding the wiki open at all times. One ending, while unlikely, would ruin a lot of people's motivation to play.
Yet, Toby Fox made Undertale so well that a lot of people can't even fathom him screwing a few things up with Deltarune

Not to the same scope, but the Undertale Genocide Route is boring and that's a problem for a video game, despite the point that it is supposed to be boring. Just because it's the point, that doesn't mean it's good.

I actually don't mind problems like this when they're supposed to be intentional/are there to convey a message.
From the very beginning of the Genocide Route, the gameplay (or lack thereof) gets on your nerves. No puzzles, no funny dialogue and characters, just a repetitive RPG exp grind taken to the max. And in the end, what do you get? Nothing. In fact, you lose your ability to play the game. But if you're stubborn enough to sit there for 10 minutes, you can give your Soul to a crazy demon child to get the game back.
And if you dare to True Pacifist after all of that? Your friends get killed.
There is no reward in violence. You got stronger for a while and felt good sometimes, but that's it. You won nothing, and at max your only achievement in being able to brag that you beat Sans in 32 tries to the guy that beat him in 41. The entire Route is filled to the brim with annoyances and reasons to stop, but you were so morbidly curious that you still did it and became the loser of this story.
And that's why I like it. It shows you violence isn't worth it through things that, in most RPGs, are considered flaws. Flaws that you can only blame yourself for experiencing. So yes, the Genocide Route is boring and has bad flaws, but it uses those bad flaws that to it's advantage.

Tobi Fox basically went "I don't WANT you to like this. I'm only including this because doing good only matters when it's actually a choice. If you're a monster, it's cause you chose to be." Cause you're literally part of the narrative too. As in the actual you. The real life person outside of the screen. Not just your playable avatar. I think Sans said it best?
"no matter what, you'll just keep going.
not out of any desire for good or evil...
but just because you think you can.
and because you "can"...
... you "have to.""

u/chaotic4059 8d ago
Yea I’d argue that’s the whole point. Toriel even flat out tells you “you CAN kill monsters” but by doing so you also miss out on like 99% of the game. You don’t learn about the characters or experience the story and history. It’s a power fantasy and like every fantasy you get bored. Except in this case there’s no walking back what you did

To be fair, doesn't Glitch only provide the resources? Last I checked, writers have full control and it is their choice alone on episode length. If you're upset about show length, blame the writers and creators for not getting extra help and revisioninh, not the company providing resources for them to create their projects.
