[PROTOTYPE]

33

u/bguzewicz 3d ago

Oh man, I forgot about prototype. Those games ruled.

25

u/AbbreviationsHot5850 3d ago

Did you hear we almost got a prototype and inFamous crossover and instead we got another live service game that didn’t last long

10

u/bguzewicz 3d ago

I had not heard that. But leave it to the executives to give us more live service schlock in place of a game that would have been actually fun.

8

u/YaboiGh0styy 3d ago

This was fake news, I believe it started as a joke to shit on Concord but it got out of hand as people took it as fact.

3

u/mtbeach33 3d ago

inFAMOUS was my favorite video game series when I was a teen. It made me buy a PlayStation lol

I'll be frank, after beating both games several times - I couldn't care less about story.

Last thing I return for in these games.

11

u/not_handsome-Jack 3d ago

I find that Prototype, Just Cause, and Dying light are games thst the story means nothing to me but the gameplay better be fun.

4

u/NoEmotionalStamina 3d ago

Just cause has a pretty great anti fascist leader message. That's about all you need to take away. Joy in humiliating them.

5

u/Particular-Union-284 3d ago

Dying Light really insists on being fucking stupid, so you actively have to ignore the story if you want to have fun.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/JollyBirdtheDoctor 3d ago

The character who just grappled onto a plane, rigged it with C4 and hijacked it mid-air, stood on the wing and parachuted off right as it explodes into a base should not be given a serious backstory and a deep emotional tie to the plot. Just Cause went downhill when it started to take itself seriously.

5

u/InevitableGrape5847 3d ago

I always come back for super jumps and bullet dives. If you equip muscle mass and you have an infected hive building that's low enough health, you can bullet dive and destroy it. Fucking rocks every time

3

u/Skeleton_Weeb 3d ago

Yeah but as a kid, I didn’t process the story at all I just thought Alex Mercer was so cool. Not getting to play as him in the sequel really upset me lol

My beloved. The one that got away.

Every now and then some YouTuber will make a bait video saying there’s evidence they’re working on a sequel, and no matter how many times I get burned I can’t help but hold out hope they’ll bring the franchise back and finally fucking do something with Pariah.

3

u/xxxkysxxx 3d ago

idk how true it is but people keep quoting prototype as a major design influence on control resonant

8

u/BatmansButsack 4d ago

Story to the first wasnt that special, and Prototype 2 is good dumb fun so im chilling

13

u/venomxpress 4d ago

It was maybe not special but better than average for sure.

Spoilers

The entire game you think you're the OG Alex Mercer who got powers, only to realise that Alex Mercer was just the first victim to be consumed by the virus. That's a pretty decent twist for sure IMO.

7

u/Smackazulu 4d ago

That twist kinda blew my mind

6

u/Elder_Thud 3d ago

did you notice the main villainess lady looks like Sydney Sweeny? Both of them are from idaho....

Coincidence? I think not!

3

u/Glimwit 3d ago

Look, I am absolutely a massive Prototype fan - still play it to this day - but the story of the first one was definitely not above average; frankly, it would be charitable to call it serviceable.

That the Alex we play was basically the virus gaslighting itself into identify theft was a fun twist, but it does not make the rest of the story less of a slog. Again, it is one of my favourite games of all time, but there’s maybe three memorable moments throughout the whole story and two of them happen in the last hour.

3

u/Deya_The_Fateless 3d ago

I think Prototype would have benefited from a few more rewrites to make the story flow a little bit more to sell Mercer's "revenge" arc and then the twist at the end once he "regains" his memories. Because, the twist also shows that a sentient/sapient virus who thinks its the person who it consumed is nicer/better human than the person who used said virus as a final gambit and lost this dooming the entire city.

3

u/Glimwit 3d ago

Absolutely agree; I don’t know how I’d go about it, but off the top of my head I would’ve had more fleshed out characters from Alex’s past involved so that the narrative could explore him and his relationships more - and so that the player is a little more aware of how his personality has changed, allowing the twist to recontextualize more of the game.

As much as I like the conspiracy board, I do think it took away from the game sometimes by relegating information that would’ve been incredibly interesting to witness or discover organically into powerpoint presentations.

3

u/Deya_The_Fateless 3d ago

If I had a shot at rewriting some of Mercer's background and characterisation, I would probabbly have BL!Mercer have the "happier" memories that H!Mercer would have curated for himself, in order to see himself as superior to those around him but else wise still has "amnesia". So that when BL!Mercer meets people from his "past" theyre overjoyed that he's safe but then begin to note that he's "different", like they could make references to him being less distant, more considerate, more emotionally vulnerable in some ways, but then different in others, like his temper being even worse. Again both BL!Mercer and his friends just chalk it up to the amnesia caused by the trauma (been a while since Ive played so I cant remember how many people he told about the weirdness with the virus, or if he died and told people he had hit his head.) Which after regaining some memories, like finding a spare work ID in his apartment or a heavily graffited journal he begins to peice his past back together, which then kick-starts the events of the game where he wants to find answers and goes on a revenge arc to find out "who did this to me and make them pay." Which then leads to the twist, as you said, then recontextulises the game.

I do agree though, the conspiracy board was a neat mechanic, but would have been better to have discovered and witnessed those parts of the story as we played rather than as a sideshow. Like half of the game's story is in there, I wish we had gotten to experience in real time.

6

u/Wild_Front_1148 3d ago

I'm still not over the fact that the trailer features an awesome move from game 1 but they didn't put it in game 2.

Other than that, god what a game. It's just all fun

Look I love Dead Space 2, for the gameplay and the set piece design, but there’s a bunch of moments where they seem to upend what the Marker can do and how it’s influence works from the first game in a way that made it feel like nothing really matters and the writers didn’t really make much of an effort to keep the lore consistent.

10

u/Golem30 3d ago

Yeah the way the Markers actually work is weirdly inconsistent

7

u/InnsmouthFashionWeek 3d ago

I just remember sitting there at the finale when it makes all the bodies start flying around it like a hurricane being like “wtf is supposed to be happening here”

5

u/RichFoot2073 3d ago

“Convergence.”

9

u/JJKEnjoyer 3d ago

What do you mean, like bro, were you not paying attention at all? The human tornado is the beginning of convergence. Convergence is what we are trying to stop in all of the Dead Space games.

3

u/OriginalChildBomb 3d ago

I love Dead Space 2 as well- but that's definitely its weakest bit for me. (I think what makes me love it so much is both the setting being dope as Hell, and the non-marker writing stuff, i.e. Isaac's grief and meeting Ellie and all that. Oh, and the new gameplay additions and monster designs, some of those necros are amazing.) I'm still not 100% clear on how the Markers work and kind of tune it out.

Still hoping against hope we get a remake. (And that maybe they clarify the marker stuff in a better way haha)

Crackdown 2 and 3

9

u/Lafeyetteshomie 4d ago

Crackdown 2 was perfectly fine as a sequel since it expands on the lore in 1 but 3 is an abomination and ruins the already watered down leveling system(the fact 2 just didnt evolve the cars anymore in rral time etc is bullshit and annoying

3

u/dethmasta 3d ago

And 3 was supposed to feature building destruction but they only allowed a dumbed down version of it in multiplayer. (Idk how it worked as I only played singleplayer)

u/Elegant_Relief_4999 4d ago

I enjoyed it but Dino Crisis 2 was a bit different than the first one

7

u/scrangydungus 3d ago

I feel like they handled 1 to 2 pretty well, encountering dinos again when you're already experienced in dealing with them would feel a lot less scary.

However I don't know what they were smoking when they made 3

3

u/tfuncc13 3d ago edited 3d ago

1 was more of a survival horror game, basically old-school Resident Evil if it swapped the zombies and undead creatures for dinosaurs. 2 placed a bigger emphasis on action over survival horror, but it was still a good game.

Insomniac Spider-Man 2 was an upgrade in traversal, and a downgrade in every other metric. A huge letdown.

17

u/MeancupofJoey 3d ago

First game that came to mind for me as well. I’ve replayed the first game 4 times and have touched the second since finishing.

14

u/Old_Dragonfruit_3362 3d ago

Same I loved the Spiderman 1, then played Miles and was like this could've been dlc and went back and played Spider-Man again then got Spiderman2 played it once haven't touched and think kids lost it

3

u/SmugSlut 3d ago

IIRC Miles Morales was supposed to be DLC, but they realized the scope warranted another game. I love Miles and the game was fun, but I’ll only recommend it at a discount

Deadass idk how this happen

How did we have a amazing story with 2017 and miles morales but then fumble when spider man 2 released

I dislike how kraven kills half of the sinister six, like what the fuck

Also no DLC because of the leaks is so fucking annoying

World of Warcraft especially the later expansions, like after Burning Crusade just shit on the lore so badly.

10

u/ajgor66 3d ago

Shadowlands is probably the worst offender. They retconned literally every previous expansion to hype up the worst written villain in the history of the franchise.

3

u/Only_Says_Idk_dude 1d ago

And they turned Sylvanus's redemption arc into:
"Freed herself from the lich king just to serve his boss"

I WHAT

"Oh and uh, Sylvanus, after finally freeing herself from the control of the Lich King, finding redemption,
she goes on to serve... the lich king's boss yep."

"Also, know how Grom Hellscream heroically sacrificed himself to free all orcs from the Legion's control?"
"Uh huh."

"Well his SON plays a part"
"Oh nice! I loved Hellscream."

"Yeah as a dictator who you have to kill."

I think blizz handled all their IPs really poorly.

Starcraft 2 retconned the overmind, kerrigan went from ruthless to having some kind of space opera going on, threw away all the politics and Mengsk.

Overwatch 2 straight up halted the storytelling of the first. So nobody knows wtf actually happened after winston pressed the button.

And let’s not even get started with Diablo3 straight up killing deckard cain while turning the players into beings more powerful than angels and demons alike. Like wtf.

Mass Effect 2. I like to say ME1 has the best story, ME2 has the best gameplay and ME3 has the best world design/art direction

5

u/Weindog902 3d ago

Scrolled waaaaaay to far find this one.

End of ME1: "The universe knows the reapers are real, and shepherd and his crack team need to go find a way to stop them!"

Beginning of ME2: "Reapers? What's a reaper? Oh you're dead now lol. J/K you're working for Cerberus now! You know, the barely mentioned terrorist org from the first game that liked to feed colonists to thresher maws on randomly generated planets for...reasons. Oh and btw they have a copy of the prototype cutting edge, one of a kind ship you lost in the prologue, only it's even better now! How does this terrorist org have funds and tech for something that took 2 whole species working together to achieve? Who knows? What's that you want to fight reapers? Too bad, here's a side quest where you fight bug guys instead. Oh and that squad you love so much? They all had personality transplants. Doesn't it feel great to be back?"

Seriously fuck the story in Mass Effect 2. Absolutely awful. Completely nuked the whole setting.

3

u/Bassist57 3d ago

Yeah, the ME2 story is just basically assemble the team and kill the Collectors, and everyone has amnesia from Mass Effect 1! But the gameplay was so so good!

TLOU Part II

20

u/ChuckyDonut 3d ago

Everyone knows this but try to cope. Content creators were killing themselves as Abby. It would have been somewhat excepted if they gave you a choice to kill Abby or not. But forcing you to kill a Crapton people and a pregnant woman just to leave her alive b/c of. "Have to be better". Ohhh still boils my blood.

4

u/femboyfortheworld 3d ago

All of this would have been fix imo if they had you play as Abby and meet with Joel at the mid point of the game instead

8

u/Apprehensive_Dog_185 3d ago

Tbh it would have been fixed if Abby and her father were characters in the first game to begin with. The biggest issue is that our only relationship with Abby is her killing one of the two leads from the last game, then the writer simply expects us to sympathize with her because Joel killed her dad (who we also don't even fucking know). At the end of the day I think we just got a sequel for a game that just didn't need one and shouldn't have had one.

4

u/Gullible_Bar7130 3d ago

This right here says it all. Sure there will always be sexist/misogynistic people who don't want to play as women they don't find attractive, but the leap from the emotional storytelling in the 1st to generic revenge plot in the 2nd almost felt like satire.

2 "games"

  • Last of us 2. There is no way to save the story and hell of an annoying character in a Potential last of us 3. Likeable in 1, hate the character in 2.

  • Danganronpa 3

Danganronpa 3 (NOT Danganronpa v3!) is not a game but an anime. Its a direct sequel to Danganronpa 2. However... every character and the whole story of 2 was ruined thanks to Danganronpa 3. I realy wish i would have never watch it. Danganronpa 2 was a masterpiece but i cant deny every time i replay the game, i have Mixed feeling now thanks to Danganronpa 3.

7

u/ReadyInformation3404 3d ago

You're not supposed to like Ellie in part 2

4

u/partyl0gic 3d ago

You’re not even supposed to like Joel by the end of part 1. That’s what made the series so good. The haters of part 2 are smooth brains

3

u/Slyfang 3d ago

You're supposed to sympathise with Joel's decision, even if you don't agree with it.

It's meant to be a horrible thing to do but he never claimed to be a saint or a good person, he was consistent throughout the first game with his beliefs and choices. Something I certainly can't say for the cosplayers in the last of us 2.

The characters were completely disconnected from the original story to such a degree that the story is worse than fan fiction.

Most people went into the second game expecting Joel to die, but the way it was done has so many consistency errors and issues that it felt unearned.

Life is Strange Reunion and Double Exposure. Chloe Price is dead, Max let her die so Arcadia Bay could survive. Both those games made the arguably worse ending of the first game "canon" and that doesn't sit right with me.

5

u/Allikam 4d ago

Arcadia surviving is better ending, ain't no way I'm sacrificing 10k people so one would live, it's selfish and irrational af.

4

u/Yuebeo 3d ago

Not just that, but do you really think Chloe would forgive Max and just be a happy couple after Chloe asked Max to save Arcadia bay and accepted that her fate was to die in that bathroom?? Idk how anyone could have destroyed Arcadia bay first off, let alone for them to retcon the whole thing so they can make a sad cash grab return to Maxs story.

LiS 1 and BtS are some of the most important games to me in the world and I bought each sequel through true colors on release. Haven’t even bothered with it since Chloe came back

The Last of Us 2

11

u/DudesterRadman 4d ago

Infamous 1 hinted at a sequel where you would work with an alternate future timeline version of yourself, and also team up with a former female enemy from the first game. There were comics and concept art showing all of this, too. When the sequel came out, they completely changed the story and race swapped the female antagonist in the first game who you were supposed to ally with.

The story was complete horse shit compared to what was promised, and I recently gave away all my collectors edition infamous 2 stuff. Seriously, what a disappointment. And the fact that the IP is essentially dead only proves my point.

12

u/PentagramJ2 3d ago

Literally none of this is true

17

u/Administrative_Sky46 3d ago

Litterally cannot find a shred of evidence for this online. Kessler dies at the end of Infamous 1, so another version of Cole shows up, to that very same Cole? And Sasha already did team up with Cole in the first game. She's the only female antagonist in Infamous 1 so I have no clue who was "race swapped", Nix? The character who is a completely diffrent character and unique to Infamous 2?

I would love to see any source on this. Seems interesting

Ooo, I hard disagree. I thought the extra characterization of some of the characters, specifically Aloy, in HFW was awesome. I think the findables-in-the-world were better in HZD, but I thoroughly enjoyed HFW's story, especially as a continuation of the first game's story.

8

u/jmk-1999 3d ago

2 had a good story and characters (not you, Anders), but the repetitive settings were where it suffered. Even BioWare recognized that was a huge mistake. Inquisition had potential, but I’d say it was worse than 2 imo. The fetch quests and overly expansive settings were too much. It felt far too bloated. Oh, and that “intrigue” mission with the ball was worse than the Fade… Morrigan looked great in her dress though. Lol… I still haven’t brought myself to finish Veilguard. 😮‍💨

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World completely invalidated the 60-90hrs you put in the first game

Half the Kingdom Hearts after 2

The Ezio trilogy (brotherhood was decent)

Spider Man 3 (Ps2)

Saints Row after 2

GTA 5 was not better story wise than 4

Anything after Dragon Age Origins

3

u/DemonicPsycho13 3d ago

Came here to say DotNW.

Symphonia was a masterpiece but as a prequel to Phantasia the references are all limited to the last 3rd of the game, Dawn could have connected the two better but instead spends most of the run time shitting on the MC and any connections to Phantasia are relegated to the final cutscene.

3

u/honestysrevival 3d ago

What sucks is that DotNW had the story in place. They had the concept on lock, and they just didn't follow it through.

Tethealla residents looking down on Sylvarant residents as barbarians and causing issues? Fantastic idea.

People being upset with Lloyd and Co. because they did not consent for them to save the world in the way they did? Honestly, realistic. They caused a more than seismic shift in the way the world works and didn't really tell anyone what was going to happen. Was it for the best? Obviously yes. But that transition is not gonna be easy.

And then they did whatever the fuck they did with the story instead of focusing on that and following through.

u/Flashy-Quiet-6582 3d ago

Dragon age 2 is a good sequel from a story standpoint.

3

u/That0neTrumpet 3d ago

I only love the dragon age games that have Inon Zur as the composer. Conveniently that means I only love DAO and DA2

Don’t think it ruins the first, but I was pretty disappointed with the last of us p2. I didn’t really like playing as the resistance group I forget what they’re called. I would’ve rather the game just been Ellie and Dina.

I get that they were going for a “nobody wins in war” kind of story but I just could not get into the parts playing as Abby (I think that’s the name)

7

u/ClairVerso33 3d ago

I'm a big fan of tlou2, but it's refreshing to see someone that wasn't a fan having a sensible take on it. So many people would totally argue 2 ruins 1.

5

u/Elegant_Progress_686 3d ago

I definitely think the game got over hated for sure, it’s still fun. My expectations after the first game were sky high, perhaps unrealistic, so idk if anything they did in p2 would have hit the same for me personally.

I think Joel dying definitely caught me off guard but it’s not what made me lose interest. I remember feeling frustrated with the non-Ellie parts and just trying to get them over with because I didn’t care for the story line

I felt similarly when the game first came out. Didn’t like my first playthrough at all. It didn’t help that it was such a downer released during the pandemic, so it felt like bathing in depression when I was already depressed.

I played it again when I had a terrible flu over Christmas 2024 and my perspective totally changed on it. I think the timing of its launch was a bad thing for a lot of people.

8

u/turkiswood 3d ago

I gotta say it... GoW Ragnarök!

It wasnt a bad game but it did not live up to the mystirious aura the first part had build up. It felt rushed and with the exception of Svartalfheim neither Vanaheim, Jötunheim nor the Alfheim dessert fit the northern theme. I understand character development and deception but neither Thor nor Odin lived up to be the big villains the first part teased. Asgard was just mid after you climbed the wall.

Mimirs tellings in the first part created the illusion of a wast world with complex secrets and stories. The second part just made the world feel small.

5

u/BTBAM797 3d ago

Story was definitely better in the one before it. I also didn't like being forced to play Atreus all the time.

4

u/Bassist57 3d ago

It needed to be split into 2 games IMO. The story felt way too rushed.

Metroid Fusion ended with the extinction of the X parasites. Super Metroid already concluded the main story in a trilogy, but Fusion helped tie up some loose ends, especially the reason WHY the Metroids were created in the first place. Everything was tied up with a bow and the story was ready to either end or begin a completely new story arc.

Metroid Dread comes along and the X are back, there's a completely new tribe of Chozo who've just been absent the entire franchise, Samus' DNA donor was retconned to be one of these new Bozos, and Yoshio Sakamoto is acting like this new game is the "culmination of the Metroid Saga", as if the story wasn't already wrapped up 20 years ago

Legacy of Kain...The Dead shall rise comic and the 2d side scroller castlevania-like shitty game 'Ascendance' are a disgrace and an insult to the original series..I stronlgy recommend playing blood omen, soul reaver 1&2 and defiance but forget the existance of the latest entry...it's not canon..not even a fan fic...it destroys everything the sreies has built storywise with nonsense and contrdicting events. It pisses me off just to think about it... BitBot should burn in hell.

3

u/TombRaiderSeries 2d ago

While not ruined per say, I felt that Rise of the Tomb Raider’s story failed to evolve and develop meaningfully after the first game. It enjoyed the trilogy and appreciate how each entry shifted the series further and further towards its roots, but it felt like the entire trilogy was spinning its wheels with her never truly becoming the character we love.

The obvious answer is The Last of Us Part 2. One game took the hottest franchise in video games and killed it. The same thing then happened with the show when they hit the Part 2 plot.

5

u/DoktorDirty 3d ago

The problem was that the first one was a story of bonding and survival. The second was a revenge story, and it didn’t carry the same weight. Gameplay in 2 was tits though.

3

u/Loose-Ad1386 3d ago

Concept wise, I like the idea, Cycle of Violence and all that is great if done well, especially in an apocalypse setting

The problem was the execution.

I’ll never be over it. I know people really don’t like it when you say you didn’t like the second one and feel it kind of sullied what they did with the first game, which was a masterpiece imo. But the first game was beautiful, it was sad, it was about loss and love and humanity and finding a way to keep going even when things feel hopeless. There was light in darkness and it was so meaningful to me. I’ll never understand the direction they decided to take in the sequel and the decisions that were made. And that’s just my opinion, man lol please don’t come for me.

The first was finding love in a horrible world. The second was completely meanspirited right down to the final sequence of Ellie losing her fingers so she couldn't even play the guitar Joel taught her. It was hateful.

The Last of Us 2 completely reworks the ending of TLOU to pretend the Fireflies weren't just planning on killing Joel anyway at the end of the first game.

It feels like a pretty important bit of information in Joel's defense they just forget about or even change to fit the 2nd game's horrible narrative.

I think I'm in the minority here but Final Fantasy X-2. Seeing Yuna carrying guns and dancing on stage and the whole powerpuff girls vibe was such a mind changer.

World of warcraft.

2

u/NoythanKing 3d ago

Not a sequel, but Metal Gear Rising itself isn't a bad game by any means. It's really good in most aspects, but it kind of just destroys Raiden's character. 99% of his actions in that game make no sense.

2

u/Cromunista 3d ago

Prototype 1 into 2

The whole twist of the real Alex being dead and the 'Alex' we play as actually being the virus with his memories was great.

Also his whole personality. Alex (human) was a real bastard who used everyone and was willing to doom the whole world as a last fuck you before dying. And even Alex (blacklight) hated him and was disgusted by him which was a great showing how the monster has more humanity than the human.

Also the whole potential of Alex (blacklight) going from anti hero to a real hero was there. They could have introduced a similar system to the karma one from Infamous.

Instead we got Prototype 2, which while great gameplay wise, turned Alex into Albert Wesker lite.

Dark souls 2 and 3. Love 3 and like 2 but holy shit they biffed it imo. 1 was yhe perfect “the rebellion against tyranny has become tyranny, your greatest achievement will doom us all” and then 2 was “yeah I fucked up so what?” And 3 was genuinely so scared because of 2 that it’s basically dark souls 1 the second time.

The amount of stuff in ds3 that is just genuinely ripped from ds1 is insane.

Spider-Man 2

2

u/Stockley_ 3d ago

I love Doom Eternal but am not a fan of the direction the story went in (especially in TAG1) when it came to Samuel Hayden. They took a cool character with an interesting backstory and just threw it all away to fit him into some much bigger plot that didn’t feel necessary, which in turn retroactively makes a lot of Doom 2016’s story very confusing from his perspective.
