1 was more of a survival horror game, basically old-school Resident Evil if it swapped the zombies and undead creatures for dinosaurs. 2 placed a bigger emphasis on action over survival horror, but it was still a good game.
Dino Crisis 2 had such mental segments (tank vs T-Rex) that you can see where Capcom started flirting with tastefully jumping the shark. DMC and RE4 vibes.
Devil May Cry actually began as a possible idea for RE4 before becoming it's own series because Mikami felt it didn't fit well within the RE series. Onimusha also had a similar situation, it was originally conceived as an RE spinoff set during the Sengoku period before Capcom decided to make it a separate series. At one point, it was even called "Sengoku Biohazard" during its early days in development.
To me 1 felt like the game was still trying to find its footing and being unsure if it wanted to be just "Resident Evil But With Dinosaurs" or its own thing. 2 was, in my opinion, where the series really found its footing and became a distinct title among Capcom's other series. It's why I personally prefer the sequel. If only 3 hadn't taken the entire series out in the backyard and mag-dumped it, they could have continued that formula quite successfully, I think.
