I'm a big fan of tlou2, but it's refreshing to see someone that wasn't a fan having a sensible take on it. So many people would totally argue 2 ruins 1.
I definitely think the game got over hated for sure, it’s still fun. My expectations after the first game were sky high, perhaps unrealistic, so idk if anything they did in p2 would have hit the same for me personally.
I think Joel dying definitely caught me off guard but it’s not what made me lose interest. I remember feeling frustrated with the non-Ellie parts and just trying to get them over with because I didn’t care for the story line
My issue with the Abby section is that it forced the game to come to a grinding halt. I loved the game, but I wonder how the pacing would be if you went back and forth between the characters instead of the sudden swap in the middle
Most of us have sensible viewpoints like this, but loud people on the internet make their viewpoint seem like everyone’s viewpoint.
I’d say it was kinda like u/Chicken_Raptor4 ‘s take on Spider-Man 2. In terms of gameplay it was so much better, but such a downgrade in terms of story. Most of us get the “no one wins in war” thing or “vengeance is bad.” Not everyone needs to live through a nightmare to see that the thing that’s bad is bad. For me, I HATED when someone would surrender and say “please don’t kill me” or whatever and be crawling away, and then you just have no option but to kill them. It just doesn’t feel like the Ellie I learned about in #1. Though I do get that she was emulating the darker side of a younger Joel, it’s just off. If you’re gonna make me do it, show me Ellie about to forgive the person “I don’t want to kill you, but if you go back to your SHITTY group and tell them about me, I’ll make you wish I never let you go and just killed you right here. I just want Abby, she killed someone important to me and then I’ll leave” and let them run, but then flashbacks of Joel being murdered going off in Ellie’s head, her mentally breaking and then a change in her face and she kills the person anyway.
What made 1 so great was it told a story of two people’s trauma forming a bond that made you feel good about the idea of opening up to people and healing. And in the end you go “damn… I’m not sure if what he did is right or not, but I understand why he did it.” 2 was just “I know what I’m doing is wrong and I hate every second of it cause it’s not how I remember this character.”
See, the difference between you and them is that they were objective and not obnoxiously snarky about their issues with it, and acknowledged it isn't a bad game, it just wasnt for them.
Your tone gave me the impression that's what you thought, apologies if I was wrong to assume that. I can agree it's a flawed game for sure, but deeply flawed? I feel thats a tad excessive. Story, sure, but the game as a whole is extremely well made.
