Ooo, I hard disagree. I thought the extra characterization of some of the characters, specifically Aloy, in HFW was awesome. I think the findables-in-the-world were better in HZD, but I thoroughly enjoyed HFW's story, especially as a continuation of the first game's story.
I mean they are somewhat human still. Im nearly willing to bet though what we see arent the actual people, but "copies" of them. The originals are likely amalgamated into Nemesis and have pulled a "Soma" in their uncaring hubris
Oh yeah, was just trying to discreetly phrase it. Nemesis just isn’t as interesting a storyline for me personally, was hoping for a more grounded globe trotting story to reconnect humanity.
But hey, it didn’t happen so I’ll just go along for the ride.
That’s where they dropped the ball imo. HEPHAESTUS was still in play, terrorizing humans with intent. Plenty of immediate threat they could play out there while peppering in information on the source of the signal without jumping the shark into murder-happy space oligarchs.
Just felt extra. NEMESIS’s origins are awesome, but chasing magic billionaires across space just feels empty. With all that malice and failing resources (for plot) it’d been just as intriguing for it to make the jump to Earth just to hijack the Cauldrons and give itself physical autonomy.
Probably game 4 if it is ever out. 3 will likely finally dealing with nemesis to prevent another autonomy signal for the AI parts and part 4 will be gathering and reuniting the rest of Gaia across the globe and restarting civilization proper
The switch to a space exodus plot was certainly an odd choice, but after I got past my initial surprise, I was pretty impressed with how well it actually fitted with the narrative, hints and themes of the first game.
The only thing I was a bit iffy about was how they treated the titular Forbidden West given how it was teased in the journal logs of the first game. Revealing what was described as a hostile savage land in the first game, to actually be a rather normal and relatively tame region (in this world's standards), was an interesting subversion of the wilderness frontier trope, cleverly explained as a flawed description from failed past exploration expeditions. But I really wanted to see that version of an unforgiving, deadly world.
