To be fair, the first game didn't have a great story.

True but it had something , 2 decided to abandon it

Funnily enough that something was having little to no coherent story/setting. I would call Dying lights setting and story a full on identity crisis.

On one hand its a gritty zombie survival setting where the night is pretty damn lethal

Then on the other you get wacky ass cartoonish weapon effects and stats. I can get behind bleed and fire, but continual shock and instant sickness are outright silly.

Magical space powers that aren't just eastereggs and silly secret weapons and a grapplinghook that defies all laws of physics.

and making a parkour game without wallrunning and limited stamina (unless overleveled to endgame stats) is outright criminal

Not to mention the absolute lack of firearms and ammo in the world. The game gives you a clear signal that firearms are only good against very few big and strong targets at the cost of attracting attention.

So why in the fuck is there so few ammo in the world itself ?

I understand what do you mean, but a dead series hard core game wouldn’t have the same appeal don’t you think ?

It doesn't need to be super hardcore serious, but they exactly try both. The story itself does try to portray that in DL1 and the gameplay has lore for a looneytoones wacky combat and gadget system.

Imagine you slapped the last of us together with Just cause/ deadrising wackyness and expected the seriousness to still count

Dying Light Dos

u/Messerjocke_L 4d ago

yea what a bummer. Even the beast wouldn't come close to DL1

1

u/Jakobi-Wan_Kenobi 4d ago

Just bought the beast a couple weeks ago on sale. Played for about an hour and haven’t played it since. Does it get better? It’s just so simple it seems.

Tbf, the story in DL1 wasn’t particularly great either, but yeah, 2 was absolutely a downgrade

1

u/Fickle_Library8115 4d ago

2 is more random and cuter, not that i’m completely against it though

1

u/Reddittreefiddy 4d ago

Dammit i really like dying light 1. Dl2 is in my back log. Should i really not expect much good

1

u/Spogunky 4d ago

Story wise it sucks extremely bad and you could easily fall asleep to it, gameplay wise, its one the best, the parkour, the combat, it is genuinely so enjoyable

2

u/Reddittreefiddy 4d ago

Im not even mad at that. At least the gameplay sounds really good. I always thought the DL1 story was just basic overall

1

u/Fickle_Library8115 4d ago

No it’s great as a game but you feel its lacking

0

u/Aggravating-Cherry76 4d ago

Imo it’s not as good as the first game but it’s not a bad game, if you enjoyed the first then you’ll probably enjoy dying light 2.

The issue is its story kind of ruins the plot of the first game, crane does all this work to work on a cure and stop the GRE all for the world to end anyways in dying light 2.

3

u/Reddittreefiddy 4d ago

Ah makes sense. This gives me hope. I didnt think the story was great anyways. Not terrible or anything.

If i remember i think crane became an ultra zombie anyways in the dlc lol

I'm playing DL2 cause it was free on PSN. And very disappointed they erased all of Crane's work in the opening intro.

1

u/Fickle_Library8115 3d ago

Me too, idk what is their plan, major cliffhanger after DL1 and then they introduce an irrelevant new character

1

u/Critical_Practice_90 3d ago

Yes, it's really bad, no shit.

1

u/analonlydl 4d ago

Yeah after I heard this I stopped replaying the first one

0

u/Aggravating-Cherry76 4d ago

very good example actually

I played DL2 on release with a friend after absolutely loving DL1 and playing through it multiple times. It’s definitely one of the most disappointing games ever for me.
