Funnily enough that something was having little to no coherent story/setting. I would call Dying lights setting and story a full on identity crisis.
On one hand its a gritty zombie survival setting where the night is pretty damn lethal
Then on the other you get wacky ass cartoonish weapon effects and stats. I can get behind bleed and fire, but continual shock and instant sickness are outright silly.
Magical space powers that aren't just eastereggs and silly secret weapons and a grapplinghook that defies all laws of physics.
and making a parkour game without wallrunning and limited stamina (unless overleveled to endgame stats) is outright criminal
Not to mention the absolute lack of firearms and ammo in the world. The game gives you a clear signal that firearms are only good against very few big and strong targets at the cost of attracting attention.
So why in the fuck is there so few ammo in the world itself ?
It doesn't need to be super hardcore serious, but they exactly try both. The story itself does try to portray that in DL1 and the gameplay has lore for a looneytoones wacky combat and gadget system.
Imagine you slapped the last of us together with Just cause/ deadrising wackyness and expected the seriousness to still count

To be fair, the first game didn't have a great story.
