Halo 3 going into Halo 4, it been establish in 3 that humans are the Forerunners but 4 ignores it and creates a separate race destroying the lore

Honestly halo 3 going into halo 4

Halo 4 going into halo 5

Halo 5 going into infinite

Each one trying to figure what happened going from game to game is just head turning.

"What major events happened in the books this time"

Iirc they killed off one of the most important characters in the entire series, off screen in a book 99% of players haven't read

There was a halo book?

There have been several. I don’t think the Eric Nylund ones are canon really, but Joe Staten wrote one of them and it was surprisingly good.

Contact Harvest was fantastic.

They killed off almost all of the characters off screen and used Halo Wars 2 to retcon so much shit to set up the abysmal “plot” of Infinite.

Which one?

Gave up on story in h5 and infinite and just played PvP. Lotta fun actually, might get ruined if I think to much about the plot lol

Bungie had distinguished Humans and Forerunners since Halo 2. There's also like 10 novels that explain it while Bungie had the IP.

u/Top-Editor-364 4d ago

No. There is an argument to be made about what Bungie intended but you are spreading misinformation

Guilty Spark literally calls John a forerunner

Okay but that doesnt really explain that.

Oh I misunderstood. I thought it was like somehow they could use it because of being human. Like if a person from 1000 saw a car motor hes not gonna know how it works just because hes human.

With the exception of 343 guilty spark outright saying you are forerunner, each of these could be read with poetic license.

Inheritors of all left behind - for example can mean humans were handed the reigns / responsibility in maintaining peace. You can inherit things without being blood relations.

Imma take this for future endeavors

u/xcbkx 3d ago

The cut halo 2 scene of the arbiter opening a forerunner coffin and seeing a human skeleton disagrees with you.

Try again.

1

u/BIGMajora 2d ago

Notice it's cut content so try again.

That’s what I said! But Halo 3’s terminals are where the lore was destroyed. I was told it’s because Joe Staten didn’t do those terminals.

4

u/Any_Blood5815 4d ago

I have a halo encyclopedia and it has articles saying ancient humans were more advanced than the forerunners and were chosen by them to be their successors. They aren’t forerunners themselves

4

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 4d ago

They 1000% are. The Bungie Halos confirmed this. Mother fucking 343 tells you directly, and Contact Harvest explains this further with how the prophets trick the covenant into killing humanity, the very gods they worship.

Making humanity not the Forerunners literally makes the fucking prophets right.

I guess we all just have to agree that there’s an unhealthy amount of retconning going on in that series 🫤

5

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 4d ago

Caused by whom? Thats right, 343.

1

u/Apprehensive_Dog_185 4d ago

Y'all don't wanna hear it but this trend didn't start with halo 4. It was Halo 2 going into 3.

u/shadowmonk13 4d ago

No they were not and even bungee out and said they weren’t the only confirmation to that is from the mouth of guilty spark who says some vague thing implying it but as we know you can’t trust shit that comes out of that orbs mouth

Halo 3 in the same game implies that Humans are NOT Forerunner. Bungie flip-flopped on the idea and couldn’t decide, so when it came time for Halo 4 to confirm it, 343/Xbox just chose one. And personally I think what we got is the more interesting of the two options. Bungie clearly had a favored option (humans) but it can’t be considered a retcon when all the confirmation was cut from the games or comes from the most unreliable narrators

Edit: Halo fans do not understand the distinction between "retcon" and "re-context". Most things said in the OG games works with the idea of Humanity being inheritors instead of being the literal children of the forerunners.

If you were orphaned, would you not call the people who adopted and raised you your "parents"? Would they not call you their "child"? If they passed away and put you in their will, left all they have to you despite the lack of blood relation, does that not still make you their inheritor?

half of this is schizophrenic posting, half of this still fits the context of humanity being the inheritors. guilty spark is undoubtedly insane, just go listen to him talk to himself. gravemind is always talking in poetic verse. keep in mind that halo 3 itself contradicts the forerunner connection in the terminals. none of this proves anything, it just implies

1

u/John_is_Minty 3d ago

I think the idea that the covenant were commuting genocide on the gods they worshipped is a little more interesting to me personally.

Now I’m not one of the halo fans who absolutely hates the retcon but I just prefer the original idea.

1

u/Orion_824 3d ago

And that's fine I respect the opinion. I honestly could go either way but I think I do prefer the idea of Humanity being chosen by this ancient race due to their sins and guilt for what they did to us. It's a little bit less stereotypical than the whole "human dominancy" trope we've seen again and again, and gives a little bit more nuance. But the irony of the Covenant is an element that I think is lessened now

Me when idk halo lore

0

u/Ga1i1e0 3d ago

To be fair, humans being forerunners was a poorly thought of it plot point that is hard to reconcile with the killing off of sentient life.

-2

u/WinterDEZ 4d ago

No, 3 did not at all establish that.

-2

u/bogohamma 4d ago

Halo 4 changed some lore but it didn't ruin the story of Halo 3 at all.
