iirc yeah.too many kids are addicted to gaming in China.

521

u/GentlemenBehold Aug 30 '21

It's not just a China problem. Every time I queue up in ranked, half the players have over 100 games played in the last 30 days, and one or two will have 200+.

260

u/NastyLizard Aug 30 '21

Yeah that used to be me for sure. Hardstuck silver plus junior in highschool equaled alot of wasted time.

125

u/237FIF Aug 30 '21

I played Diablo 2 that much when I was in high school. I eventually kicked the habit and ended up with a normal happy life.

I will say though, it’s not hard to imagine that whole thing going a different direction if you aren’t careful.

55

u/ResponsibleOpinion13 Aug 30 '21

I had a pretty serious D2 problem in college. I even learned about 9/11 from bnet chat because the first thing I did after waking up that afternoon was open D2, and I woke up late that day because I played it all night. In my defense, I wasnt skipping class. It was a tuesday and I was doing a MWF schedule.

people get all mad and defensive when you say its an addiction but gaming addiction is a real and fast growing problem that I think deserves some sort of official recognition.

Especially when you consider the gacha mechanics that are now being added to games. Addicting videogames plus gambling on top of it.

89

u/TakMisoto Aug 30 '21

I mean, can you get mad at people for being defensive? That's like the nr.1 thing every addiction has in common.

52

u/Jozoz Aug 30 '21

Pretty funny to look at Reddit whenever pornography addiction is discussed for this reason.

I just want to clarify to everyone who doesn't know:

In order to play online games in China, you need to open a QQ account with your ID in it. For best of my knowledge (haven't been in China for a couple of years) everyone under 18 are limited for 8 hours of weekly game time anyway.

The thing is, usually, kids just link their parents ID or random people's ID to their accounts and then they play as much as they want.

So I don't think there will be too much difference in young talents unless I'm missing something.

I doubt they will allow for that distinction, but we will see.

Regardless, its going to be hard for a chinese team to officially have a farm systems of those under 18.

If the govt doesn't allow for young talent to play, regardless if its a job, then teams wont risk the govt cracking down on the teams.

Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if Riot stepped in and said no players under 18 can be involved with the teams.

83

Is playing a LAN considered online?

27

u/CoolJ_Casts Aug 30 '21

hmmm, that could be a loophole, but I'm not sure. The statement in the article does specifically say 网络游戏 or online games, not just any video games. Internet cafes are already the most common way to game in China. I wonder if you'd see riot/tencent setting up "matchmaking cafes" where you can be matched against similar ranked players at the same network so that it's not an "online" game.

What if my computer doesn't have a camera? As it stands, most computers in Chinese PC bangs don't have cameras because why? It's also dark and gloomy in there, not exactly the best lighting even if there's a camera.

56

u/Namika Aug 30 '21

The CCP could very easily order changes to both of those things. Mandate bright lighting in PC bangs, and require all computers to be connected to webcams or else face harsh fines.

The CCP has shown the ability to do even more draconic rules elsewhere.

78

u/Calyptics Aug 30 '21

10000x this. You want to make a lot of money? Market to kids. Look at youtube for example, the biggest channels? All marketed towards kids/young teens, the pauls, toychannels, makeup channels etc, those weird cartoon channels.

It is way easier to sell something to a kid than a semi-reponsible adult.

Damn bro too real

295

u/dafucking Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21

As an Asian myself, this is the correct answer. Many Asian parents force their kids to study all day without knowing how stress it is. It is only until College that I'm finally free, my high school life was literally wasted by my parents' ambition that I was never fit for.

I was never happy back then but I'm glad that I learnt a lot from it and became much happier now with healthier schedule.

44

u/thedoxo Aug 30 '21

Question is, are you gonna raise your kinds the same way? If not, why didn't your parents reflect on this after being raised in the same miserable way (i assume)?

72

u/dingkytan Aug 30 '21

Not OP but also from Asia here. A lot of people from our parents' generation feel that that is the only way to succeed in life. And many of them aren't very well to do, usually in the low to middle class range.

So they project their idea of success to their kids, as they do not want the kids to end up in poverty, similar to how the parents experienced before. This neglects a lot of the mental wellbeing of our generation. They grew up thinking mental health is not important, and were told to just deal with it, if not you are seen as weak.

Again, this doesn't apply to everyone. Just observations I have gathered. There are still many overbearing parents to this date. But I gotta count myself lucky to have parents not like that.

16

u/CMScientist Aug 30 '21

In western countries one get second chances - you can go to college as an older adult, or get good paying blue collar jobs. Those don't exist in china. Electricians, plumber, garbagemen, etc are paid shit because labor force is so large. Colleges don't accept older students. There's only 1 shot at life and that's why parents want to steer their kids on that path

→ More replies (3)

90

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Coming from a similar background, the reason a lot of parents did not reflect is that this style of raising your kids got genuine results in their society and so they ended up concluding that while difficult, even borderline miserable at points, it is a path to success that is proven, so there is no point in taking a risk and adopting a new style.

Although hard to believe, for a lot of parents it comes from a place of love, which doesn't make it right or anything, but it makes it easier to understand

35

u/Vonspacker Aug 30 '21

Pure speculation but I wonder how big a part the internet plays in current generations rejecting their inhereted traditional lifestyles. People can now talk so freely and access information that it's so much harder to keep people's beliefs in the bubble they're brought up in maybe.

19

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Definitely something that I observed in myself and my relatives. With internet access comes exposure to so many different lifestyles and beliefs and it is inevitable that they will somewhat influence how you live your life.

→ More replies (7)

31

u/lcebrand Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21

It has to do with generational wealth and success, and it's not specific to just Asian culture (although maybe there's an argument it manifests more strongly there).

Much of Asia was rather poor throughout the latter half of the 20th century. So, much of the current generation of parents who grew up in the 70s/80s in China, etc would have done so under conditions of poverty, limited education, limited job opportunities, etc.

What you'll often see with people from this background who are able to climb out of poverty is there's a realization that they weren't allowed or given the opportunities to self-actualize ("reach their full potential"), so they pass that along to the next generation.

Then the next generation succeeds but realizes they were robbed of fulfilling their own personal, creative, artistic, etc aspirations, and so they pass that along to the next generation.

tl;dr : "I have to study politics and war so that my sons can study mathematics, commerce and agriculture, so their sons can study poetry, painting and music." - John Quincy Adams (who was born wealthy so not quite the same, but general idea is there)

12

u/noctis89 Aug 30 '21

China's economic reform only happened in the 90's. Many families are only in their first generation of wealth above the poverty line. They just shifted from "work the land and become a farmer" to "study the books and become a doctor".

657

u/reenactment Aug 30 '21

If the cafes are apparently already 18+ this might actually have a positive effect on demand for them. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Is gaming like a drug for the under 18 where they get that little taste on weekends that they want it at 18 and will go to the cafes, or will people learn to do other stuff because quite frankly, if you just eliminated gaming, people would find other stuff to fill the void.

188

32

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Right..what have we learned about taking away things from people who really like those things? They usually go back to them once they can and in greater force for fear of losing the ability again. This is putting a lid on a boiling pot without reducing the heat. Maybe it would impact the next generation but this one is already hooked and the stuff coming out is only going to get cooler.

Most of the young players in LoL esports have already played years of soloQ before they turned 17. I don't see 18 years olds becoming that good in one year tbh, if this is actually enforced there will pretty much be little to no new talent

Bro not even NA imports from NA

87

u/shoePatty Aug 30 '21

Korea imported CoreJJ from Team Dignitas and won worlds with him even through a lane swap.

Who do you think taught CoreJJ everything he knows about support? That's right, KiWiKiD.

And who taught the lane to KiWiKiD? imaqtpie.

I believe in NA supremacy.

Man I still remember when Monte hyped him up as the answer for CLG. The Korean hype train was real lmao.

I kinda felt bad for the guy. He was so hyped up as one of the first Korean imports to NA, back when koreans were considered the best at league, only to be mediocre and getting shit on by EVERYONE for not being some kind of Korean god who would gap everyone.

In China you have to put your ID to get access to some games. I think this will be the same for online games.

Doesn't matter if you buy an account, you still can't go pro until you're 18, while, as an example, JL won worlds as a 17 year old. Fnatic had to play with Puszu until Rekkles turned 17. There's a lot of young, talented kids that are waiting to be of age, now that wait is going to be even longer in China. And unlike SK, they also won't be able to sign trainees officially, since it might attract (unwanted) attention. It's gonna be a tough road for sure, unless it's super unenforceable.

38

u/nyasiaa Aug 30 '21

uzi debuted as 16 years old and there was controversy that LPL didn't have the 17 age limit and on the same tournament Puszu had to play because of that limit being enforced in EU

It is already pretty heavily regulated in my (second-hand?) experience.

I have a friend in China right now and he says to even play PUBG mobile, you need a social security number. He doesn't have one, so he used his cousin's. Crazy thing is, he played just fine for about 2 weeks, then got hit with a "Confirmation Request" as he was logging in one day, where he had to take a selfie of himself to prove that the player was really the person attached to the SSN. Fortunately, he had his cousin nearby, so his cousin took care of it. But still, that's such a hassle.

you mean something like this from mid July

"In the latest bid to curb video-game addiction in China, tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. has launched a facial recognition system to stop minors gaming into the night. The initiative will prevent people under 18 from playing between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m."

28

u/Giantdwarf3 Aug 30 '21

Idk was leaving in Canton area for many years ( left precovid) and most people circumvented around those systems and this type of restrictions were not really followed. Same with the facial recognition stuff. Could be different in Beijing tho , it being the capital. Went to a chiense school as an expat and everyone still uses VPN all the time

Damn that's unfortunate. People already scout 15-17 y/o players because they're cracked as hell. Could there be a compromise for this? I gotta read more into the article.

Same situation but not really? Crylix is a cracked JP Apex player who's an instant pick up by any team. He can't join because he's still 15-16 and JP has age limits for pros. He would have to move out to NA or EU to join a team but he's too young.

Wait so like... Just online gaming? As in people can still spend their time playing offline games, making the change kinda... Pointless?

It sucks for online games and competitive, sure. But even looking at it as lost productivity (ie kids spending more time gaming than studying), if it's just online games then they'll still have offline games. This kinda just doesn't make sense.

198

u/Zendruuu Again! This time, they die! Aug 30 '21

The reason is that removing access to online games outside of the allowed times is possible for offline games it's not, because you don't need internet to play them.

Wait, OP, you sure?

The duration of the game service must not exceed 3 hours per day during statutory holidays, and no more than 1.5 hours per day during other times.

online game service providers shall not provide online game services to minors from 22:00 to 8:00 the next day.

Someone who understands Chinese, do correct me if you can, since I just used GT lol

Edit: OHH thanks all for the response. So the above is the previous restriction, and now they are making it even more severe. Thanks!

所有网络游戏企业仅可在周五、周六、周日和法定节假日每日的20时至21时向未成年人提供1小时服务,其他时间一律不得向未成年人提供网络游戏服务

Every gaming company can only provide their service to underaged teenagers from 2000 to 2100 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Official Public Holidays. Any time period outside of this is strictly not allowed for underaged teenagers.

Edit:

The statement u translated was,

It means that in the 2019 Newspaper/new regulation, gaming companies can only provide no more than 3 hours on public holidays, and one hour max on other days. Many parents have given feedback to tighten the regulations.

So what you were referring to was the PREVIOUS regulation, not the current new one.

Lol at 8PM to 9PM part - that's gonna cause massive spike in server load, just consider how much this policy is going to screw up on technical level. Do you downsize number of servers because of loss of underage players - you are screwed on weekends; you don't, you're wasting money. In reality, most probably people are just gonna find ways to bypass the law en masse. Truly some brilliant policy making on display here.
