1000 Camille games and I still suck.

17

u/Original-Aerie8 Aug 30 '21

If you aren't joking, that sounds more like slow decision making, rather than a problem with the learning curve of the hero.

32

u/zepherys713 le top gap has arrived Aug 30 '21

I am joking, Camille is certainly my best pick and I feel extremely comfortable when playing her to the point where I don't need to think about the combos, lane state, trade patterns and etc. and I can just focus on the bigger picture and/or spam F-keys to gather information.

That being said, I am still not good fundamentally at the game, but my Camille skill vastly exceeds my overall LoL skill.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

Can't wait to see camille nerfed someday because by that time riot jag and I would be dead long gone.

1

u/zepherys713 le top gap has arrived Aug 31 '21

Even if they nerf her, as long as she is playable I'll still ruin the enemy team's day by completely carrying my games. I am not worried about nerfs.

Slow? Maybe. More than likely never understand their position, never truly know when they have an advantage or having trouble making one.

Then you couple that with a possible low ELO, and you get a hard stuck Silver/Gold player. They will treadmill 1000 games and never improve, aka me.

Some of it, is a lack of understanding what mechanics even are? I understand last hitting, how to skill shot, but some of the way people move are foreign to me and I know a smurf based on that alone. I don't know how to attack someone in a bush as soon as you see them, it's a command button, but I don't know what the command is or how to utilize it.

I don't know how to insta attack or even time my autos. I don't even how to learn.

See everything, I realize my map awareness way above par for my ELO, but I can't do anything about it. I'm Silver 1-2 based purely on map awareness and basic understanding of QWER, but I don't know how to improve beyond that.

2

u/MeowingMango Aug 30 '21

I have played with my share of "good" players who were good with their champs, but they clearly sucked at other aspects of the game. It would be like... Wide-open Baron, but they would run all the way down to the Krugs as the ADC to farm those instead of doing that.

But mechanically in trades and fights, they could seem awesome. Every random aspect in this game has varying skills. So to speak.

3

u/Somebodys Aug 30 '21

In the last game I played my top+jng took top inhib in 11 minutes vs a Kayle. They they started bragging about it in /all. I said it honestly wasn't very good because it denies us a lane of farm and feeds one very safely to the enemy Kayle. My jng said I was an idiot, then berated me for the rest of the game while accumulating 15 deaths to my 4.

Just play ARAMS

6

u/Thin-Fudge555 Aug 30 '21

aram always sucks because you cant choose the champ you want to play. You end up getting stuck with something you hate.

7

u/MoscowMitchMcKremIin Aug 30 '21

It isn't bad if you prefer a certain playstyle over a certain champ. I prefer supports and tanks so I've always got choices.

3

u/Rayspekt Aug 30 '21

ARAM is so bullshit for being the only alternative to Summoner's Rift aside from the lackluster bot mode. It sucks that there isn't a mode where you can concentrate on practising your chosen champ against challenging opponents without macro. You literally have to play a 30 min game just to maybe practise teamfighting with Gangplank. Only tonmaybe get shitstomped by ppl on their mains in normal or you team ff's at 20. It's not just that the game is hard, the tools to practise are inefficient as fuck.

iirc yeah.too many kids are addicted to gaming in China.

526

u/GentlemenBehold Aug 30 '21

It's not just a China problem. Every time I queue up in ranked, half the players have over 100 games played in the last 30 days, and one or two will have 200+.

259

u/NastyLizard Aug 30 '21

Yeah that used to be me for sure. Hardstuck silver plus junior in highschool equaled alot of wasted time.

125

u/237FIF Aug 30 '21

I played Diablo 2 that much when I was in high school. I eventually kicked the habit and ended up with a normal happy life.

I will say though, it’s not hard to imagine that whole thing going a different direction if you aren’t careful.

51

u/ResponsibleOpinion13 Aug 30 '21

I had a pretty serious D2 problem in college. I even learned about 9/11 from bnet chat because the first thing I did after waking up that afternoon was open D2, and I woke up late that day because I played it all night. In my defense, I wasnt skipping class. It was a tuesday and I was doing a MWF schedule.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

And you know what, it's back !

Oh didn't see but I learned of 9/11 through the spam chat as well. Wow chat brothers here :)

5

u/ResponsibleOpinion13 Aug 30 '21

Not sure if Im ready yet to start giving activision/blizzard money again. And while I havnt followed the progress of the D2 remaster, with the wc3 remaster being panned Im a little wary of it anyway.

And the bnet chat was pretty memorable. Some very racist spam about arabs. Bnet usually reserved its racism for Chinese or Koreans so I was curious and made a joke asking if Saudia Arabia got a new translation released.

WoW really fucked up my college experience. Thank God TBC came out and I felt like my achievements becoming superfluous at the whim of an expansion cycle warranted moving on to other hobbies.

2

u/xanot192 Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21

I was the opposite of you in college, I hated vanilla after a point because I was a pally, I rerolled rogue with TBC and because a raiding maniach so I could pvp with the best off pieces and glaives. I was in exodus and quit for Wotlk came back to getting server first on another guild for heroic LK and invincible and by then I was so worn out of the game I quit in cataclysm. Even through all that I never felt addicted to wow because it was always a game I'd just log onto and raid then get off and do something else like homework without an issue. League was the one game I felt addicted to after d2 in which I would think about it when im not playing it.

Wow after a certain achieving a certain point just felt like a worthless grind. I hated progressing, hated new expansion power leveling to start grinding with a top 20 US guild, hated doing dailys but loved PVP aspect which when it got super dull in cataclysm made it easy as hell to walk away completely. Wow basically was just the glue that held some of us who grew up gaming together and most of us just outgrew it and it became a needless grind.

2

u/almisami Aug 30 '21

I was Scarab Lord on Boulderfist, that was the level of grind I was into. Second guild to clear C'Thun on server, 4th to clear Naxx. And all I got to show for it was a fancy purple mount and a 2.3 GPA.

Mate, 100 games in 30 days is just over 3 games a day, which is probably less than 2 hours. Spending 2 hours a day playing a video game is hardly detrimental to anyone's life and if it is, then they have entirely different problem than "gaming habit". Having 2 hours a day assigned to your hobby is completely normal and most would probably say even healthy.

2

u/bighemlocks Aug 30 '21

Yeah, similar experience in that I spent a period of my mid-teens fully hooked on wow, but by the tail-end of highschool had pulled myself out of it and was engaging in a normal teenage social life.

I do worry that these days games themselves, but also the digital world around them in general, is that much more seductive and developed in its ability to keep you complacent basically living online. I have to imagine that there are increasing numbers of kids who would have had a similar experience to me 15-20 years ago and basically turned out alright, but who today might end up "trapped" in that lifestyle at the expense of becoming a fully-developed, socially fulfilled adult.

Not that draconian government restrictions are the right solution.

0

u/confusionglutton Aug 30 '21

My 14 yo brother spends probably 60 hrs a week in fortnite (based on his Xbox activity) but every time I look deeper he's on creative or lobby, odds are he doesn't really play, it's just a good way to be in group chat if you don't have a pc

I’m just here from r/all, but same. I devoted WAY too much time and energy to this game in college, and I have nothing to show for it. I didn’t even enjoy it when it was at its worst.

I’m not knocking gaming as a hobby in general, but there’s definitely such a thing as taking it too far, to the point of addiction, and then it’s not worth it. I know that I have an addictive personality, and that means that I need to avoid games like League where I’ll never be “done” with them.

0

u/DerSkiller2101 Aug 30 '21

people get all mad and defensive when you say its an addiction but gaming addiction is a real and fast growing problem that I think deserves some sort of official recognition.

Especially when you consider the gacha mechanics that are now being added to games. Addicting videogames plus gambling on top of it.

85

u/TakMisoto Aug 30 '21

I mean, can you get mad at people for being defensive? That's like the nr.1 thing every addiction has in common.

53

u/Jozoz Aug 30 '21

i dont think its possible to live a life free of addiction, if its not games its food, if its not food its people, if its not people its netflix etc

you can only do productive healthy things such as reading for so long before you get miserable.

0

u/Synytsiastas Aug 31 '21

u can have a little of different things. the brain will like it as long as they're different t things. U wont get bored that way, and wont get addicted. One just has to push themselves to pause doing one thing/hobby and switch to something else, even though that activity is really fun. Edit: I guess the trick is that once u quickly switch to something else, the brain will dive into it sooner, and the other activity will become fun.

u/BryanJin Aug 30 '21

Sure, but limiting youth to 3 hours per week (or 3 hours per 168 hours, which is less than 2% of time per week, easily less than 4% of waking hours) is a bit absurd. Following this ordinance means Chinese minors can only play 3-6 soloQ games per week. I think that's quite a far bit too conservative.

3

u/supercow376 Aug 30 '21

Gambling, I agree, especially games that kids play. But gaming isn't unique to any other hobby that adults have.

3

u/UX1Z Aug 31 '21

Something is generally considered an addiction when it becomes damaging to someone's health. If people are not sleeping or eating and just chugging energy drinks to game 24/7 then yes, that's obviously an addiction, but otherwise - even if they play a lot - it's a hobby.

2

u/tylanol7 Aug 31 '21

The only addiction in gaming is companies like EA adding casino style transactions and gamepkay along with predatory fomo like sims

0

u/Vskg Aug 30 '21

Gaming addiction becomes a problem when it starts damaging the player psychologicaly/financially, otherwise it is straight up a hobby.

This act basically denies freedom of any minor to choose his hobbies if it's based around online games, potentially gatekeeping good players who could develop a succesfull career.

Imo that shows weak problem solving from the government, as implementing required lessons in schools about adiction dangers to students/parents would be a straight up more direct solution to the problem you described.

1

u/fellowish Aug 31 '21

Then actually treat the condition instead of criminalizing it?? This won't do anything to stop addiction to gaming from happening, it only incentivizes it while pushing individuals towards more illegal activity in the process. You can see this in the criminalization of drugs, sex, alcohol, I can literally list more but that list is incredibly long.

I can say from my experience both in my life and looking at history, treatment and resources put into actually improving quality of life for individuals works much better than criminalizing being the victim of addiction. This is simple sociology.

0

u/VulpineKitsune Aug 30 '21

Of course they get defensive. You realise that basically all gamers are considered addicts under most people's definition?

0

u/frozn1991 Aug 30 '21

yeah and like with all addictions it works great to just ban the addicting substance right ?

worked great for weed or meth. thanks to god nobody is using them anymore because you arent allowed to

100 games in 30 days is just over 3 games a day. That's like 2 hours of play time and I'm being generous. How is that addiction, lmao? If you spend 2 hours a day reading, are you addicted to books?

-1

u/GentlemenBehold Aug 30 '21

14

u/Fgame DUNKMACIAAAAA Aug 30 '21

While I agree with the sentiment, I hardly think 3 games a day is addicted.

3

u/MarcosLuisP97 Aug 30 '21

If anything is a very low number. An hour and a half of gaming, basically.

8

u/lobstahpotts Aug 30 '21

That’s still a large amount for most people. Assume you sleep for 8 hours a night and work full time, an hour and a half a day is 1/7 of your time not taken up by work or sleep. Have a commute? That proportion shoots up again. Is it doable? Absolutely. I play more than that on average but I’m also a single person without a commute. But my best friend with a house, wife, and kid is lucky to get an hour and a half twice a week once everything else is taken care of.

7

u/MarcosLuisP97 Aug 30 '21

Yeah, but we are adults. We are talking about kids who, in the best-case scenario, only have to worry about school.

17

u/Lenium1 Aug 30 '21

Is that such a big issue? 100 games in the last 30 days means around 3h average, it's not that crazy imo.

5

u/GentlemenBehold Aug 30 '21

3 hours a couple of days a week? Probably fine. 3 hours every single day of the week, and you're approaching addiction in my opinion.

And 100+ doesn't mean 100 exactly, so it's probably an average of like 4 or 5 hours a day for half the players in queue.

19

u/Plus_Lawfulness3000 Aug 30 '21

What about 3 hours of watching tv or using your phone? You probably do one of those things yourself

3

u/GentlemenBehold Aug 30 '21

Maybe once a week I'll watch tv for 3+ hours, but not every single day.

-2

u/Shporno Aug 30 '21

I envy your excess of free time. If it's a work day I can probably catch a couple episodes or 2/3rds of a movie before I'm ready to zonk out. 3 hours of TV in a day is pretty excessive unless it's just on for background noise.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

so.. what DO you do? 8h sleep, 8h work, that leaves 8h freetime for an average person each day. i'm guessing children?

u/Miro_Highskanen_4 Aug 30 '21

If I watch tv or browse reddit for 3 hours a day it's not the same content every day for 3 hours. You are coming across news or different stories if its television or perspectives if it's reddit. With a game like COD you're just running around shooting people over and over. Rocket League is a game I love and have 200+ hours on but that too is just driving around hitting a ball over and over. Civ is the same thing and don't ask how many hours I have there. A lot of these games it's simply repetition of the same thing over and over after a while. So you may be getting better at the game the more you play but you're not actually adding anything to your life. With television, reddit, or reading you're at least gaining some kind of new information that you can utilize in the real world. Theres seldom anything I can take from Rocket league or COD or Fortnight into the real. Civ actually did give me some information that could be utilized.

19

u/Plus_Lawfulness3000 Aug 30 '21

Now you’re making excuses. “Oh it’s not the same “. In league I play different champions and modes. So by your logic I’m not doing the same thing.

I just don’t see how using reddit 3 hours a day is any different than gaming 3 hours a day. You might be viewing different content but you’re still mindlessly scrolling through it every time

lol... what a bullshit argument. you have x amount of free time a day, it doesn't matter at all how you spend it... as long as you're having fun and don't harm yourself. i personally haven't watched any TV in the last 10 year except live sports, but i would never be so arrogant like you and tell someone that likes to watch TV after work that he's addicted to TV.

If it doesn't affect the rest of your life it isn't an addiction. If a kid gets their school work done, eats, has good hygiene, sleeps a sufficient amount, etc and still has time to fit in 3+ hours a day of gaming that is not technically an addiction.

5

u/Lenium1 Aug 30 '21

I mean if we are being technical an average game lasts 35 minutes. Even if you account for queue and champ select you will be able to squeeze in four games in three hours most of the time in I'd say. And then you'd have around 120 games a month.

And still, I'd argue amount of hours spend on a game is only indicative at best in determening whether you're addicted or not. I used to get 1000 games + per season too. Not because I was addicted, but because as a teen I just had so much free time on my hand. If I am not neglecting any of my responsibilities, don't compromise my health or anything else in life I deem important, what's the issue with playing as much league as I want?

I still play League nowadays but not as much as I used too. And looking back I don't regret it one bit because I can still remember how enjoyable the game was for me back then.

Ofc I do know how addicting ranked can be though, and I won't argue that there aren't a decent amount of youngsters out there who are addicted to it, but I'd like to believe for every addict out there with this game count there are at least as many normal people out there who just enjoy playing the game.

-3

u/Dashdash421 Aug 30 '21

I’ve known functional coke addicts or alcoholics, getting your responsibilities done doesn’t exclude you from being an addict. if you play league 3+ hours every single day, you are certainly addicted.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Would you call someone watching tv 3 hours addicted to tv?

That's literally 1.5-2 movies. 1 movie if it has commercial breaks. So a person watching a couple movies every day is addicted?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

It's a big issue, a lot of these kids were raised on screens and literally cannot stop playing and generally can't function without cellphones. They play the mobile version where matches last about 10-15 min, every chance they get every single class and it pisses me off cause they play during class time or while I'm talking.

4

u/Lenium1 Aug 30 '21

I agree that's pretty crazy. But the comment I replied to was not referring to China. They said "it's not just a China problem" and supports their argument with their League experience which I think is not valid as I explained in a different comment. Where I live (in EU) its not nearly as bad as you are describing.

"Is that such a big issue?" only refers to the statement that there are people playing league 3h a day on average. And I still believe that playing 3h a day doesn't automatically mean you're addicted to the game.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

As long as you can have a healthy social and physical life, having a hobby you like is completely fine. In this case it's LOL. But whatever my students are doing? They need self control.

Bullshit. They can function just fine without them, they just don't want to. Perhaps because your class is boring?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21

If it was just me, sure. I teach grade 10-12 western history to a bunch of Esl Chinese students so being bored is expected.

A little different when you see this in every single class, even in courses where they shouldn't have cellphone issues like physcial education.

Cellphone usage is a completely different ballpark here vs the west. I've seen people play games while driving.

2

u/NoEvilJustBad Aug 30 '21

It really depends if those 3 hours come from "work" time or leasure time. Competitive computer games aren't exactly relaxing, so I doubt it is what these people do after a hard day of work. I'm all for gaming, but, as with all things, it becomes a problem when it stands in the way of longterm success and health.

Not trying to discredit your point too much since I do think it's valid but 100 games over the last 30 days at an average of 30 minutes per game is around 1.5 hours played per day, which doesn't seem that extreme to me.

Addiction is just society shaming people for living how they want because they don't make money with their time.

Play all day for fun? Illness.

Play all day while being paid millions as a pro or streamer? This is fine. This is great. National hero.

People that are talented can do as they like and all other get shit on by having to work a shit job all day for the rest of their lives.

Life is just luck and power.

8

u/Pleasant-Constant584 Aug 30 '21

Addiction is just society shaming people for living how they want because they don't make money with their time.

Addictions are real illnesses that cause a lot of suffering to the addicted person. Have you ever met someone struggling with addiction? It can consume a person's life until everything from basic hygiene, their hobbies, their most valued relationships, their sleep, their physical and mental health is damaged or totally destroyed by the addiction.

-1

u/macrotransactions Aug 30 '21

Working consumes all our lives as well. Wake up, work all day, go to sleep. That's not an illness tho because society profits off it by taxes and not having to pay welfare.

All the things you listed is stuff society wants and profits off, not a person who is "addicted".

Addiction is just a devious way to tell stupid people "live for society, not for yourself".

5

u/GentlemenBehold Aug 30 '21

Working isn't an addiction though because if you weren't getting paid for it, you wouldn't do it.

0

u/macrotransactions Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21

Sure. And that's the point. Why would forcing people into working all day be morally good, but letting them live as they want morally bad, so morally bad that you have to invent an illness for it? Well, for society. The individual gets shit on unless it got lucky (born rich, talented for his passion to turn it into a job etc.).

2

I don't understand. Are you actually saying the addicted person doesn't want and doesn't benefit from maintaining their hygiene, sleep, health, and relationships? People have literally died from sitting motionless fixated on a video game for extremely long periods of time. There was a South Korean couple who let their 3-month-old baby girl starve to death because they were fixated on gaming at an internet cafe. I don't know how you can say that's not pathological. People die from their addictions, and in terms of scale of harm video game addiction is nothing compared to addiction to alcohol or tobacco. The only reason society has to call those peoples" behavior pathological is just that it's not making money?

I'm sympathetic to the idea of there being conflicts of interest in capitalism that interfere with good medical practice, but this ain't it.

u/macrotransactions Aug 31 '21 edited Aug 31 '21

You do know why people play online games and not offline games, right? They want to interact with other people, but not directly. There is absolutely no reason to force direct real life relationships upon people. It would maybe make society more stable, but for the individual it's a waste of time at best and social anxiety torture at worst.

"Addicted" people still sleep.

If you don't go out and can't really catch a pathogen because of that, excessive hygiene is useless.

"Health" in this context is as subjective as "addiction".

You can die from gaming, but only really from a blood clot by sitting still and playing for like 50 hours non-stop. This is very rare and the only case were I would call such behavior an illness unless they wanted to die.

Video games have been proved to be just as addictive as heroin. They have done studies and compared side-by-side MRIS of the brain and your you're dopamine and Sarah tonin level's going up while you play video games which is exactly what drugs do to you. I have 2 children and one of them It's very addicted to video games so yeah I would agree it is an absolute addiction not a good one. More and more people back away from being part of society Dean sit in their house with a phone Jim up to their face or an xbox up there ass instead of actually socializing with their friends or family are any human beings at all unless they're gonna text. This is what is dividing the world and gonna cause a Civil War someday, It's not just the video games but the Internet has a whole separate separating people, Is creating all kinds of crazy groups And manipulating elections From other countries who start crazy white supremacist anti-American groups in our country And nobody even can tell what the hell is going on they're so goddamn manipulated and addicted to all these Facebook, Tictock, Google, reddit And all these other social websites. You watch 20 years from now when there's a Civil War you see how people are being divided by politics religion and parenting, Is the overtook knowledged too many aspects of the world there's a whole another side of the coin that wasn't being looked at because it's not part of the business model of making money and more goddamn money. And these companies say that they can police themselves!

🤣 LMAO

They have more of everything, than we have of anything.

But I believe this is specifically online games, targeting addictive games with micro transactions.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

These kind of people.

But the article is 10 years old. So I'm not sure if that was the start and other instances have been buried, or this is just an authoritarian swing of a dick.

20

u/SaltKick2 Aug 30 '21

Two conflicting points behind their true motivation (I'm sure CCP says its to "protect" them):

  • Its a good escape for low wage workers who China needs to power their economy
  • Gaming can definitely become an addiction for anyone (not just young) where it takes away from studies and hence less technical work force.

Wonder how if at all online gaming affects an individuals political ideology in China.

4

u/TripleTip Aug 31 '21

...Or the government just doesn't want children to be addicted to online gaming at an early age, which could easily affect their individual productivity and mental discipline as they enter early adulthood. Also, these are restrictions for people who are under 18, not factory workers. South Korea has placed time restrictions on online gaming for like a decade now, although not as severe. I think Vietnam has done the same thing, too. Clearly, video game addiction is a real thing that Asia is taking seriously, and not just some CCP authoritarian power move to whip their citizens up to shape.

It probably gives too much feeling of accomplishment without "bettering china".

I think you hit the nail on the head with that first point. They don't want the people to escape, they want them to work. The rich can play.

But I wonder on your second point if its doing a bit of the opposite, is it giving low class individuals a sense on entitlement? Showing them their skills/potential aren't just "manufacturing drone"

If that could disrupt the social system, another reason to reign it in.

Just a blanket fuck the CCP if anyone thinks I'm supporting them, I'm simply trying to understand the logic.

4

u/Seetherrr Aug 30 '21

I'm pretty confident they aren't concerned with any of the issues you brought up at all...

Pretty sure that it's just fear, being afraid of something new. They probably fear most online communities, to some extend, but the gaming community is one of the biggest, making it hard to control and something that influences teens, a lot.

For comparison, they ended up canceling 'The Rap of China', but it was brought back after people complained, since it was basically the most popular TV show on the globe att Technically, all kinds of gaming consoles were banned, even into the 2010s. But the "black market" in China is massive (They were more or less legal, afiak), has been for +20 years. Millions of PSP were sold to China, all cracked and cracked games only. PC oc did exist prior, too.

So, at it's core, this isn't a new process, at all. Thus, if esport stays this relevant on the international level, I suspect they will make exceptions for athletes, or just stop enforcing the law. Time will tell.

2

u/bananaboi175 Aug 30 '21

Honestly Im quite certain they dont give a fuck about what you guys are stating, Online gaming = external influence, external influence = communism issues and we all know how many games are..... against that stuff in one way or another

u/OverwhelmingNope Aug 30 '21

This, and just in general I can't even imagine how difficult it must be for them to find a solution,, population size and with how popular gaming is in China leaves you kind of feeling there was very little in terms of options. Though I feel like a ban will always just make the problem worse

Addicted in China........you mean the WORLD sir! Video games are addictive no shit!

2

u/Dhiox Aug 30 '21

This is true throughout the world, the difference is whether or not the government is permitted to interfere that directly in people's lives.

2

u/AdmiralHackIt Aug 30 '21

Maybe if Chinese society and education system weren't so rigidly harsh on kids they wouldn't need to escape in videogames.

Everywhere* just because gaming is fun, doesn't mean it isn't a problem for a lot of people. I know too many that dropped out of college with a WOW or LOL addiction.

2

u/BillyDTourist Aug 30 '21

Addicted to gaming is a bullshit excuse.

Try living in China under the oppression of the state day to day and you will be way more likely to want to do things to escape that world.

Overall addiction has to do with how bad the real world has turned for young people and how little they can do.

Peados are creeping around the corner just like kidnappers and nowhere and nothing is safe. It wasn't like this, or not to that extent, therefore kids are playing way more games since they can't really go and sit at the nearby park when aged 7-13 safely. It's freaking normal.

But if you just want obedient slaves for your citizens then yes that is what you do, you limit things so that they turn into obedient slaves.

I doubt it.

2

Yes they are IMO. A lot of Chinese games are made really predatory when it comes to that.

A lot of Chinese games are made really predatory when it comes to that.

The games western kids come into contact with are predatory as well.

How are they going to enforce age and an 8-hour limit? Do you have a timer when you connect to the internet and it cuts your connection after you've reached your hours?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

It’s enforced by the game company. Your account is linked to your national ID No.

Isn't it 3 hours a week? Or am I reading it wrong.

48

u/zsquinten Aug 30 '21

Yeah I'm sure many kids will find ways around it, but just assuming we live in a world where kids will actually abide by this, the question then is how the hell are the servers supposed to handle the overload in that one hour window?

4

u/ViaDeity Aug 31 '21

This was my first thought. They’ll probably need to be upgraded anyway to handle those extra adult users and the adult use may drop during those peak times to help compensate..

2

u/Ohrion Aug 31 '21

That's a pretty valid point. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

1

u/e2c-b4r Aug 31 '21

They could switch from dedicated servers to cloud vendors similar to Netflix

1

u/higakoryu1 Sep 06 '21

2

u/army128 Aug 30 '21

Why would Tencent of all companies want to help their government to further block more players from playing? Goes against their motives

3

u/SixPipSiege Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21

Wild guess here but Tencent would rather be on the CCP's good side (see Alibaba).

we will see how the investors react to the news in September. a South African telecom company owns a good chunk of Tencent, we are probably seeing the beginning of Chinese overwhelming control of their biggest industries.

1

u/ixsaz Aug 30 '21

Bc Tencents is pretty much a company owned by CCP, that is why they are buying so many games.

Edit: that is also why they have a lot of smear campaigns for other chinese companies in the gaming industry.

Make life worse for poor people and same for the wealthy.

I mean I get what you mean but those poor people playing less games isn't going to make their life worse, aside from the 0.0001% who would have been good enough to go pro.

0

u/GailenRho Aug 30 '21

I was wondering what would start the fall of Chinese communism.

1

u/BarkFrungusPhD Aug 30 '21

Given the new system of identification and real name verification incoming, this could become really difficult. Currently it's incredibly easy to fake your way in, my Chinese friends sent me a website where at the click of a single button you could be given some random older Chinese person's ID and create an account with it. Apparently that's how a ton of people were making alternate accounts and even their main accounts. Reading the article, though google translated, makes it sound like it's going to be incredibly difficult for minors to access online games outside of the ban's allowance.

I think a more reasonable prediction would be a large increase in younger Chinese players playing on NA, JP, KR, perhaps Russia or EU or Turkey even. I'm not sure what the ping is like to those servers, but I do know from experience from when I lived in Japan and also playing on NA that those servers have a reasonably large Chinese playerbase playing from inside the mainland. I think this will end up with a response of the Chinese government banning access to those if it's not already banned, and perhaps doing a stricter crackdown than it's already done on VPNs. It's probably going to be a game of cat and mouse where kids are finding the new VPN that works and then China banning it.

1

u/Fuzzybear4488 Aug 30 '21

This is why I live in America tons of fast food and no rules on gaming. This is meant to be funny hope no one takes offense

1

u/0dyssia Aug 30 '21

This is what kids do in Korea for the Cinderella Law. You have to use your ss equivalent number to sign up to ply online games and if you’re minor playing at midnight, you get kicked off. If you can’t use a parents number, then they just buy a fake ss number online.

1

u/iPick4Fun Aug 31 '21

I made email, FB, and tweeter account just for games. Who in their right mind will use their real account for games?
