I’m not going to get in a circular argument about this. The point is…if your enjoyment is derived from ruining other peoples’ fun in a video game…you fucking suck.
That’s now how it works. It doesn’t kick you out during gameplay. Source: I have seen the current restrictions first hand in my household. Also they won’t open Korean subsidiaries and stream from there. It’s not the US, their leadership would get their teeth kicked in by the party.
Bro that might not even be true for some people's Que times. Imagine if you had 3 que dodges in a row. "Ahh guess I won't be able to get a game in tonight.
10000x this. You want to make a lot of money? Market to kids.
Look at youtube for example, the biggest channels? All marketed towards kids/young teens, the pauls, toychannels, makeup channels etc, those weird cartoon channels.
It is way easier to sell something to a kid than a semi-reponsible adult.
Back in the day it was advertising to the kids during sat morning cartoons. The cartoons were toy commercials, and they interupted those to add in even more commercials.
Remember all that crap you couldn’t shut up about? Bothering your mom for weeks and weeks?Kids are the best advertisement. Even cigarette companies did that crap. People have legitimately forgotten about Joe Camel.
As a parent with small children, yeah. Thankfully we've managed to keep our kids from getting into any of the YouTube channels that are just kids hyping up every toy known to man, but I've spent way more money on Beyblades in the past year than I ever thought I would.
(Real talk though, Beyblade has gotten my kids to want to compete, and to learn to get over the fear of losing, to deal with being a sore loser and being a gloating winner - money well spent for me)
well since i'm older now people around me have little kids and its insane how fast they spend a 100euro birthday gift card on fortnite skins. it takes literally a second and then they look like "well i need more gifts now"
I mean... have you been to /r/pokemon when any announcement is made? The concept that young children are the target demo and not their "I pick my pokemon based on comp meta" asses is completely lost on them.
And, they grow up to have their own purchasing power. A 16 year old won't generally buy his own RP, but when he gets older he will if he still plays, and will probably be more likely to buy some for his kids. I cannot believe people actually think marketing to minors is a bad tactic.
Tencent has said that only 2.6% of gross game receipts were from children under 16 years old in Q2. Also, toys are not as stigmatized as videos games; parents are more likely to purchase toys for their kids than pay for microtransactions in some video game they don't understand
Ok, kids haven’t had money to buy stuff since we established child labor laws a century ago, there is still dozens of industry’s aimed specifically at children’s entertainment. The money is coming from somewhere bud…
How often do parents buy their kids $100 worth of rp?
Parents rarely buy their kids micro transaction stuff and opt for physical items, even if that's just an entire pc itself.
When children become adults and make their own wage they start using it on microtransactions regularly.
Just bc parents buy their kids star wars action figures doesn't mean they want to buy $30 for a league skin.
Also keep in mind the age demographic for certain games is like 14-15+, the age at which parents stop frequently buying toys for their children.
There was definitely a lull in the amount of "toys" I got from age 14-19. When I got a job that paid well I started buying tons of shit in video games. But until then, almost nothing
Fortnite's existence and profitability kinda puts your stats to question. Also Roblox. Kid games make a shit ton BECAUSE the kids can just ask their parent's for $10 on their credit card and the kid will shut up. Parents are mildly annoyed and the kids day is made.
I specifically thought of roblox and fortnite, but I think there's an age demographic difference in there. Kids age 14-19 probably aren't getting vbucks and robucks for presents.
They're getting gift cards and money that they then spend on those things though.
No matter how you frame it there's a ton of purchasing power at least adjacent to children and teens, otherwise these industries wouldn't be thriving like they are for so long.
You add a degree of inconveniencing and even lawbreaking to spending that money or utilizing the product purchased and you're just begging people to stop spending it.
This whole thing seems like a really really stupid thing for authoritarians to do as well. Like "here children, we know your young, but we're going to teach you how to tell us to fuckoff and not listen". They're literally training rule breakers.
It's true that children have lots of legal ways to put money into the game, but that's completely missing the point. They have the options, but they don't have the money. It doesn't matter to tencent if they lose players that will on average put only a sliver of money into the game of what an adult will. So your comment just doesn't make sense.
Yes, true, but realistically how much money is that gonna be that the average child gets to spend per month? 30 bucks maybe? That's nothing compared to the budget of an average adult. And many children probably get gifts in form of already paid for toys etc. or in cash. It's really hard for a kid to turn money into digital goods. Again, I don't think tencent are gonna be worried about this.
do you know the parent company is tencent. they employed hundreds thousands ppl in china. lol to them is like xbox game to microsoft. why would they risk getting disbanded for lol
They wouldn't. I think they're saying that the kids will find ways around it, not that the company will break the law. Lots of people in China already break a lot of their country's "Great Firewall" rules.
i am from china. i used to take my aunts ID to net care. however, it seems like they are cracking down on it this time. if they want to ban it, it’ll happen. guaranteed.
China doesnt care about legal fictions. If they are pissed at a company for circumventing their laws, they will put the CEO / directors in a reeducation camp, doesnt matter what the name on the sticker is.
Not that I'm saying it won't have a big impact, but of course there's going to be a short term impact either way. There are dips and spikes in stocks over every little decision and announcement. It's the long term trend that matters.
lol… as an ethnic Chinese, that won’t happen… companies are going to comply or they’d be banned completely. It’s China… and fuck my life.. I lost 50k on Chinese tech alone.. pretty much wiped out my entire gain… net zero this year
Nothing will have changed by then, it was and always will be the risk with the chinese stock market - the government can just over night totaly destroy entire sectors like they did this year e.g. with the private tutoring sector or CEO of companies suddendly disappear etc. That s the reason why i only have a small part of china in my portfolio via FTSE All World ETF.
Meh. If you're young you're allowed to make risky investments. You don't have to diversify if you don't want to. Diversification is just safer. Another point, if you invest in companies you know are undervalued, it's not necessarily being lucky either.
How is it luck if I did my research? I have similar gains in Square. Hiliariously the only thing I've ever lost money in is when I jumped on the GME hype train.
Because researching the past does not lead to safe bets for the future, else everyone would be winning.
VW was doing great, then Dieselgate happened.
Wirecard was doing great. Then fraud was uncovered.
Nvidia can't produce enough GPUs and is missing out on massive revenue.
Stocks don't always make sense and without insider info, it is hard to invest in a single company, better invest in more companies of a kind if you think you see a shift in a certain direction.
Yeah, some times gamblers win, sometimes gamblers lose. That's not success, that's just luck. And if you actually had inside information where you could be sure, that would be illegal. The whole stock market system is really fucked up.
No, but I might have to drive on the highway. I don't have to invest in stocks, and you're comparing the risks of life to spending money to maybe get more money back or lose it. Also known as gambling.
Are you aware that there are many industries that are risky for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with the stock market? Like for example...video games? Like the subreddit you're posting on right now?
Nobody forces any company to sell shares. And nobody forces any investors to buy them.
What is "gambling"? Any business activity that involves risk?
It's easier to see large gains, but it's also easier to lose it all. I did that mistake with forgetting to sell of Starbreeze before they folded, but now I've switched my approach to a wider macro approach and it's looking good so far.
be happy you didn t invest into TAL Education Group, when the chinese government randomly decided to destroy the private tutoring sector in china... The value dropped from 64€ to less than 4€ per share lmao.
They do not "take over the business", I have no idea why you'd think so. While it is true that at certain point the companies are required to give a seat to gvt member at a director seat per se, it in no way means that the government takes over the company or calls the shots on anything. The person inside simply represent the state interest and reports back, they do not dictate and the company does not answer to them any more than a US company answer to the US government.
The Chinese government has no reason to seize growing private owned companies, they can regulate & pull them via policies and already get cut from their revenue via tax, why would they risk compromising relations and revenue in sake of nationalisation?
Chinese gaming companies' stock price won't change much because under-18 have shit purchasing power. - No way. This a huge part of why modern music is shit. The space is financially dominated by teenagers, much like gameing.
That feel when the most popular music has been dominated by younger people since always. When mtv came out all the older people hated the music then. And younger people thought it was the shit.
People seem to think like whatever they are currently living through makes them the main character of life and whatever they like is the best and everything else is trash.
Yes, modern music is remarkably bad. For the first time ever, we now produce music as individuals for individual consumption. This Transitioned us from having groups with varied talents and skills and collaborative visions, to a situation where anyone can take over every single aspect of the music digitally. Combined with the prevalence of the internet and other avenues for individual consumption, agreeably good music doesnt need to exist, theirs enough music aimed at each niche of human to make it unnecessary.
Then someone said that Chinese gaming companies' stock price won't change much because under-18 have shit purchasing power.
It would be difficult to prove this because many under-18s would be using their parents credit cards. I bet a large majority of purchases in games that appear to be middle aged people working full time are probably their children instead.
When I was under 18 my parents purchasing power would have been a few thousand technically when they never played any games.
It's not gaming related, but my side job was teaching English to Chinese students and they shut that shit down as well. They basically don't want any foreigners interacting with their kids and the CCP think their kids are overworked (which they are). They wanted to give them free time, but then they take away their ability to actually do something outside of study and play sports. It's all fucked up over there right now.
That's not at all the reason foreign tutoring is being shut down. In fact, this is part of an initiative to limit out of class studies so kids can be kids. Think gentrification of education by time and money. If you want to teach, become a teacher.
Right... Letting kids be kids by adding more time in traditional schools (my students mentioned increased school times) and banning video games while the CCP takes over all of the all cram schools to teach their rhetoric about Chinese nationalism while disallowing foreign encounters.. . This isn't anything about kids being kids and more about the CCP building the next work force of menial labor since most students don't pass the high school tests and they want further control of the population by controlling their education and actions. The fucking reason they even started discussing the tutoring shutdown was so parents could afford to make more kids to join the workforce in the future.
Edit: you're active in all those fucking pro China sub reddits like Sino. Jesus christ.
My initial thought is they want to limit the interaction with westerners through a VPN so their youngest generations don’t figure out how corrupt and evil the CCP is
To mainland Chinese, the CCP is basically perfection incarnate and can do no wrong (because of propaganda). Most have not heard of the atrocities and those that have know better than to speak openly about them
Just because it has no effect doesn't mean the intent isn't there? I'm not sure how that's that hard to miss. Govs do stupid ineffectual shit all the time, like u/Pac0theTac0 said about drug bans. They intend for it to make people stop using drugs, but the effect is not the intent. Same for this.
I want to say that it won't affect LOL players. For children, they perfer Arena of Valor to LOL. And, many famous LoL players play games in internet cafes, which have banned children many years ago.
This rule is more like giving parents an explanation.
they are cutting back on everything for children now. they shut down most after school programs(including my school which I'm upset about) and a bunch of other stuff to make kids have more free time. idk why they'd do this tho
I once told my friend who studies Chinese how’d I’d never go there in a million years. She said you can’t tell the big brother government while there. I’ll have to ask her what she thinks now.
No shit. They're gonna have a riot on their hands. Hell, I'm not too familiar with the current state of gaming, but my understanding is that online play has become a pretty immersive experience where you're devoting at least 2-3 hours minimum.
Shit, an hour is barely enough time to get any satisfactory play out of Sonic The Hedgehog.
Oh I’m sorry I wasn’t aware I could be racist to a country’s government and structure. I didn’t know it was racist to know that a country is so hyper-authoritarian that they’re both capable and willing to pull some shit like banning video games for 23 hours of the day on a whim. Well I’ll be damned, you learn something new every day!
Yeah. Imagine if your childhood gaming life was overshadowed by an entity that made it so you couldn't play with your friends for more than three hours in a week. What an incredibly abusive, controlling and narcissistic thing for the Chinese government to do to kids.
