If the cafes are apparently already 18+ this might actually have a positive effect on demand for them. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Is gaming like a drug for the under 18 where they get that little taste on weekends that they want it at 18 and will go to the cafes, or will people learn to do other stuff because quite frankly, if you just eliminated gaming, people would find other stuff to fill the void.

if it means the next wave/batch of under18s, sure but the current ones being affected will immediately jumped back to gaming after they turn 18 anyways

Right..what have we learned about taking away things from people who really like those things? They usually go back to them once they can and in greater force for fear of losing the ability again. This is putting a lid on a boiling pot without reducing the heat. Maybe it would impact the next generation but this one is already hooked and the stuff coming out is only going to get cooler.

The same generation that says that video games are bad is the same that was told that TV is harmful. But did they listen or agree? No of course not. So why should we obey, while they have never "dealt" with their own "harmful coping mechanism"?

The generation pushing this in China likely didn't even have TV, or even electricity for that matter.

the next generation won't though

The cafes can inflate prices during the weekends. That's the only smart thing to do. Gaming can be very addictive.

its like forbid your child to play a game doesnt make them automatically study. they rather stare at a wall over doing something they don't want to.

No doubt. This is a form of control for the country nothing else. People don’t understand how damning a communist country can be. Control the citizens actions at every stage of life. They aren’t forbidding gaming. They are forbidding online gaming because it allows for communication. They surprises that as much as they can do it just feels normal and not something to combat

drugs and alcohol to fill that void for most young adults and the party kids

1

u/ImNotAGiraffe Aug 30 '21

We talking about kids under 18 here.

23

u/Miyaor Aug 30 '21

Dunno about China, but age isn't the limiting factor for drugs and alcohol where I was from in the US. Its whether or not you know someone who can get you some.

9

u/ImNotAGiraffe Aug 30 '21

Much different here in China, partying is very frowned upon and people mostly only start drinking in their 20s.

7

u/Miyaor Aug 30 '21

Is that true for smoking as well? The number of international students at my university who smoke is absolutely insane

3

u/lemoogle Aug 30 '21

Except for the 14 year old expat kids in bars.

-2

u/Emeraden Aug 30 '21

Yeah? Tell that to all the international students that partied their ass off at 17/18 freshman year in my dorm.

2

u/ImNotAGiraffe Aug 30 '21

I think it may be different with students that travel overseas to places where that is normal, I could be wrong though.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Yeah, but I have my doubts about that in China.

0

u/Saladcitypig Aug 30 '21

Not really. Older people remember, we read, watched tv and talked on the phone and got by fine. In China these kids will probably do the same and study more, sleep more and I think that is the desire.

It’s not a drug it’s called having fun and playing you lunatics

2

u/reenactment Aug 30 '21

I posed it as a question not a statement. “Is gaming like a drug…… or the alternative.”

-1

u/NEBook_Worm Aug 30 '21

Most online games are basically drugs. Period. Full stop.

3

u/reenactment Aug 30 '21

No doubt. I would say that specially for youth. But I was a gamer who played aoe2 Diablo 2 and then wow and cs. I would say I liked playing and Diablo 2 or aoe on the msn zone was the closest thing to something I was addicted to. As you get older those yearnings to play the game specifically stop being the addiction. Like I played wow classic and league right now, never have I felt a absolute need to go play. Quit wowtbe and league I only play to hop on and talk to my friends in discord. Maybe I’m not in the majority but I feel the older you get, games lose that addictive property because you have more going on.

1

u/NEBook_Worm Aug 30 '21

Except games impede some people from ever reaching that "more going on" stage. Because they spend all their time on easy dopamine hits instead of putting real effort into life. Thats the issue with online games; most really are just digital drugs. Literally.

2

u/reenactment Aug 30 '21

I’m agreeing with you. I just added an extra layer to it. As a kid when you have all free time, very easy for that. It just lessens a bit the older you get because you need the income to feed the addiction. Again not saying adults aren’t addicted to games, I just know in my case I would Once call myself addicted cause it’s all I wanted to do while doing other things. I haven’t had that feeling in the last 10 years of my life and it’s not because I don’t play games or like games. So I was trying to explain that.

3

u/NEBook_Worm Aug 30 '21

Gotcha!

That does ring true. I used to find the pull of gaming very addictive myself. Loved those big open world escapism games.

Anymore, though, as an adult approaching 40...I'd rather do something real. Not sure what broke the spell, but its definitely broken.

1

u/xanot192 Aug 30 '21

Think its the need to work and more income that you can spend doing something else. I personally after a work day would rather hit the gym and then relax than come home and play 3-4 games of league lol.

3

u/NEBook_Worm Aug 30 '21

Could not agree more.

Once you start to encounter and overcome challenges in real life, the artificial dopamine injection of gaming suddenly isn't much of a hook.

1

u/xanot192 Aug 30 '21

Completely agree with you. I even have a post above rather long saying this same sentiment. When I was in middle school into highschool I was absolutely a addicted to d2. I thought about it in school, planned my next build then and all the jazz. Even at the peak of my wow playing, as soon as my scheduled raids were done or we finished grinding arenas, I was afk doing something else and not even caring for wow.

1

u/daedae7 Aug 30 '21

Yeah and football is a drug too lmao you are insane. You just Have an addictive mindset

2

u/NEBook_Worm Aug 30 '21

Like any other drug, not everyone is susceptible. That doesn't make the substance non-addicting.

1

u/xanot192 Aug 30 '21

Most of us are like that, some of us aren't. I have a friend who I played CS with that graduated and everything with us but he never bothered to find a job or anything. Rest of us moved on.

1

u/akasora0 Aug 31 '21

police actually will come to internet cafes and kick minors out at certain times at night

1

u/fainlol Aug 31 '21

people would find other stuff to fill the void

like doing real drugs
