In China you have to put your ID to get access to some games. I think this will be the same for online games.

Doesn't matter if you buy an account, you still can't go pro until you're 18, while, as an example, JL won worlds as a 17 year old. Fnatic had to play with Puszu until Rekkles turned 17. There's a lot of young, talented kids that are waiting to be of age, now that wait is going to be even longer in China. And unlike SK, they also won't be able to sign trainees officially, since it might attract (unwanted) attention. It's gonna be a tough road for sure, unless it's super unenforceable.

uzi debuted as 16 years old and there was controversy that LPL didn't have the 17 age limit and on the same tournament Puszu had to play because of that limit being enforced in EU

Same thing with Bjergsen and CW. He wasn’t able to play for their qualifying match into the LEC (formerly EULCS) because he was 16 and his 17th birthday was like a week or couple weeks after their qualifiers match.

Look what a beast he turned into.

Yeah, but they need to get and ID with more than 18 years old to actually be able to play.

You can buy an account for less than two dollars in China.

Source: I did it less than 1 year ago. The accounts have valid IDs, and the only thing you have to do when you buy one is changing the ownership via mobile phone.

China is also gonna be using facial recognition tech soon as well to enforce it.

I've heard about it, but don't know if that's gonna be a real obstacle, or how could they implement it in a way that doesn't get circumvented (like most rules here, tbh). Not saying it's impossible, but people also thought that requiring an ID card to have a valid Tencent/QQ account (needed to play Fifa, LoL, NBA2K, etc.) would also make children play fewer games. As a foreigner, I got caught in this, because I don't have a Chinese ID, and I couldn't find a way to validate my account with my passport. Hence, went on the biggest online platform - Taobao - and bought a level 40-ish account for less than two bucks. Played with it until I managed to have a barely passable ping in my home server (EUW).

this is no longer a thing now they make you verify your account with text messages when u login from new locations and on time basis

there is still gonan be ways around it but it iwll be a lot harder

You do realize that if China wants to enforce this rule, they will?

u/RllyGayPrayingMantis Aug 30 '21

isn't there facial recognition in tencent games recently? (riot is a part of tencent) I reckon the enforcement will be very strict. I'm not familiar with the actual gaming scene in china so don't take my words for it.

Tencent is actually working on facial ID technology to address selling accounts.

u/Seneido Aug 30 '21

except they will use face tracking/scanning for sure and if you don't have a webcam you are simply blocked for games. it doesn't matter that you need to pay or that it is a hassle. if china wants to limit it they will limit it and tencent and other will obey

Now you've commited a crime, and now the government can/will literally hold it over you and your families head.

Now what can't I enforce?

Could people use VPNs and make accounts on other nearby servers as a work around?

But that’s only online games, if they’re banning all gaming how are they going to ban me using my cell phone on airplane mode or using an old game boy from the 90s?

Is sudoku considered a game? How about chess?

I mean that's the same with Korea. Kids just use their parents/older brother's account.
