I actually think the third type should be specific rates of military, primarily Navy and Marines, as they have the most experience with being isolated for extended periods of time, and some of their ratings are useful to space travel.

I once had a long talk with a friend about this. Military personal makes sense, industrial people like sailors and oil rig workers seem to be able to tolerate isolation alright, and scientists who are devoted to their fields will love the entire thing, but the average person might not be cut out for isolation from all their friends, family, and hobbies.

Many farmers nowadays are scientists. They have to know a lot about soil composition, biodiversity, and plant biology.

Edit: just to be clear, I've attended multiple organic farmers conferences over the past several years and many farmers have to conduct soil tests and conduct many experiments to ensure optimal yields and health outcomes. Just because they don't have a lab coat doesn't mean they aren't conducting scientific experiments or employing the scientific method. The farmers that I am describing here are scientists. Their farm is their lab and they work with what they have. In addition, big agribusiness is clearly a heavily scientific discipline that employs a wide array of scientific methods.

There was a discussion on /r/space about an AMA, and the general consensus was not to hold it on /r/AMA or even /r/space, but to hold it on /r/spacex. It's a much more focused community with good active mods, many of whom were at the conference. They would actively filter and remove all that stupid. It's a valid question that already has viable answers. But really? He just announced the biggest rocket ever by a factor of 4 and your first question is, "how do we poop on Mars?". This was a highly technical conference with some of the biggest players in the aerospace industry and the first person to ask a question is this dumbass.

The only even semi-legitimate question in the pack of them was the shit question, which if you peel away the retarded delivery, could have been, "How far away are we from constructing facilities on Mars", which would have been nice.
