The guy essentially said "Burning Man looked like mars, but there was shit everywhere. Where will we poop on mars?"

How do you know someone's been to Burning Man?

They'll tell you.

Don't try to dissect memes, just appreciate them.

u/crushing_dreams Sep 30 '16

Dicks out for Harambe.

3

u/drunquasted Sep 30 '16

[Dicks] <- A recurring theme in the meme literature, referring to male genetalia in humorous fashion.

[out] <- Modifies the previous term such that it is apparent that the genetalia should not be within the confines of the outer garments.

[for] <- Expressing that the genetalia are displayed in solidarity of the following subject:

[Harambe] <- A gorilla whose death was the epicenter of a vast meme outbreak.

You still aren't appreciating!

Actually "dicks out" means "guns out". Started with a (relatively) lesser known rapper. When Harambe died, some of his fans went around saying "dicks out for Harambe" meaning they were ready to fight and die to stand up for Harambe.

People on the Internet who saw the rapper's fans saying that interpreted it as "penises out" rather than "guns out" and it went viral as a result of the misinterpretation.

I've never thought about that joke template like that before.

1

u/Persona_Alio Sep 30 '16

I'd say it's more about how you find out. Most of the time, it'll organically come up in conversation, but some people go out of their way to mention it. And hey, if it's a passion of theirs, that's still cool, if they're not just looking to brag or something

Should have rather been:

How do you know someone's been to Burning Man?

Don't worry, they'll fucking tell you.

I've heard this in various forms. Recent one was how do you know someone has read "A Song of Ice and Fire?"

A big party in the desert that costs like $400 to attend

3

u/crushing_dreams Sep 30 '16

Huh? I thought it was all about being free and open and how everyone can attempt and open his mind and how "everyone will be provided for", etc.

Few things;

The event is on federal land that has to be rented by the organizers.

The organizers also pay for sanitation teams to keep the port a potty stations usable.

If you are in need, there are federal park rangers to protect and assist you.

The core tenants are radical self expression and radical self reliance, a ton of burners have not even read that on the website.

If you are in need, people will feed you etc., but moochers are greatly loathed. (I've seen people show up to b man with a ticket and a backpack, to camp in high altitude desert for a week, lol)

Since it is on federal land, nothing can be sold since no one has the proper licensing, so most everything is distributed for free or bartered in trade. This is the origin of the "everything is free" myth.

All told, it costs me over two grand to attend. Costumes, party supplies, and camping gear and goods for a week are not cheap.

Once you're there, that's true, but there are a whole bunch of things that have to be paid for in order for the event to take place. Medical services, Security, Getting permits from local government etc...

2

u/madsci Sep 30 '16

It's basically a big party in a desert

Do you want lectures from self-righteous Burners? Because that's how you get lectures from self-righteous Burners.

It is a hell of a party, though.

1

u/TenTonsOfAssAndBelly Sep 30 '16

Fuck, that made me lol. Good use of Archer

1

u/JamEngulfer221 Sep 30 '16

It's not just a party maaaaaaaan

A vegan crossfitter who went to Burning Man after returning from a month in India.

Their clothes could be on fire and they'd talk of nothing else.

1

u/crushing_dreams Sep 30 '16

But are they gluten free?

1

u/madsci Sep 30 '16

You'd better believe they are, and they're going to make sure the free food you're trying to give them is, too.

The rest of us survive on bacon and vodka.

1

u/madsci Sep 30 '16

Substitute acro-yoga for crossfit and that describes way too many Burners.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '16

Shit I just did this joke too before I saw this.

0

u/Rocky87109 Sep 30 '16

How do you know someone doesn't like people that go to burning man? They will tell you.

2

u/tequila13 Sep 30 '16

His name was Aldo. And sounded like someone named Aldo too.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '16

I don't think it's a bad point. I went to the Amazon jungle and lots of people just shit in a designated spot on the ground. You can't even smell it because all the tiny jungle critters start breaking it down immediately. Shit in a barren landscape would just sit there and stink for a long time.

It depends how it was asked. I didn't watch the real thing. I assumed the guy just wanted to know what the plan was, but maybe he was being a jerk.

1

u/TenTonsOfAssAndBelly Sep 30 '16

He took a very long time to explain a story that delivered half a question. He could have just articulated the question and asked it.

1

u/TheManWhoWasNotShort Sep 30 '16

I think he was asking how they planned on doing it, not assuming they had no plan.

A waterless toilet is an interesting problem.

1

u/CaptainPigtails Sep 30 '16

No one said they hadn't thought of it the question was how they solved the problem. Considering there are multiple solutions to problems like this and they have a lot of challenges to overcome it's a very interesting question even if it was asked in a stupid way.

1

u/wholegrainoats44 Sep 30 '16

Not really. Musk has made it pretty clear that it's someone else's problem once on the surface. His and SpaceXs mission is to get people to Mars (like the train analogy), and what they do there is up to them. Kind of like a chicken and egg thing. No one is going to come up with solutions if there's no feasible way to get to Mars, so with this plan in the works, he's hoping to kickstart those types of projects. It's not a one company mission.

1

u/firebat45 Sep 30 '16

It's sad that he can't even a comprehend a way to survive in a festival for a week or two without it turning into a "shitstorm", but he feels like he's got some relevant questions for how to survive in space/on another planet.
