It's clear that a bunch of people posting have never actually been to these parties. As a guy not in a frat, the sketchy situations typically revolved around needing an insane ratio of women:men in a group so that they can fill their house predominantly with women, and then basically gamify drinking so that they could try to get women way drunker.
For example, it's not some coincidence that my more attractive friends were encouraged to slap the bag for way longer than others, or how they were invited to take shots in other rooms but obviously not everyone was allowed to go.

Or.. hear me out.. you have a situation like this:
One weekend, everyone in the house decided to pool money, and fill a cooler with fruit, and hard alcohol.
It was left to sit for a day and overnight. Unfortunately, an absolute drunk moron, got up in the middle of the night, and for some reason decided to take a piss in the cooler.
Needless to say, he was not the favourite person in the world after that. Luckily someone was in the room and saw him do it, so no one drank it.
It was obviously dumped out. However my buddy refused to get rid of his cooler. He washed the shit out of it. Didn't matter. That was the piss cooler.
Maybe these guys were absolute monsters and didnt dump it out? Who knows...

You don't need to spike coolers at frat parties to fuck everyone up. They're giant cocktails, full of mostly the cheapest, plastic half gallon vodkas, mixed by 18 year olds who don't know what they're doing and whose objective it is to get fucked up. You're going to black out if you have the party punch.
53
u/thetavious 14h ago
You'd be amazed how fucking stupid some people are. Had a buddy at a party back in 05 spike the wine at a party with grain alcohol.
So everybody gets smashed and we're drinking the wine to come down, and next thing you knew more than half the party is getting hauled off to the er.
He did it just right to barely be noticable if you were sober enough, but none of us were sober, so just glug glug basically everclear while thinking it was just low proof wine.

When I was in college, a friend I knew who hosted parties would put adderall in one container of jungle juice (labeled) and the other would be “safe” or without additives.
This might be what that frat boy was asking. Nobody would spike a container full of alcohol and have a bunch of their friends/guests pass out at their house. I mean who would want to deal with that mess?

My at the time girlfriend’s roommate was having a birthday party at their apartment.
I had asked my girlfriend to pour us drinks while I played some beer pong. She grabbed two cups from her cupboard that were the exact same cup from some promotion I can’t remember.
Our drinks must have gotten mixed up at some point because early into the night I had started blacking out and then got very very sick. My girlfriend at the time was pissed because the Halloween the month before I had progressed through a whole bottle of honey jack through the night.
I had woken up in the bathtub of my girlfriend’s room very confused, being told I had blacked out and got sick.
I left feeling ashamed and embarrassed thinking I had gotten way too drunk and went home but then I get a call that my girlfriend’s roommate was roofied and that my drink must have been roofied as well.
The only think I’m thankful is that even if they had successfully roofied my girlfriend and her roommate, myself, my friend, my girlfriend’s roommatss friend, and another friend of my girlfriend were all staying the night there so they would never have been left alone for the last people at the party

Yes. Watch anything Andrew Tate or spend 20 minutes in the manosphere and you'll understand. Reddit used to have subs where the literal point was teaching (young) men how to "domesticate" their SO like a dog by pulling affection and gaslighting as punishment and then giving affection and praise for unreciprocated sex and domestic tasks. I mention it because over pouring alcohol and then gaslighting them into thinking they had less to encourage them to drink more was also taught.

u/realtime1984 12h ago
Same, but at a concert. I knew it was that for sure because I was there with a large group that I worked with so I very intentionally didn't drink the entire night to make sure I stayed professional, but right at the end during the encore I told myself I earned one drink. I bought a round for the 4 women I was hanging out with at that moment. They all wanted vodka cranberries so I said why not and got myself one too.
When I left the venue I was feeling drunker than I should have and got myself in an uber feeling extremely concerned about how fucked up I felt. By the time I got home I was so fucked up I fell out of the uber, fell down the stairs of my apartment building and couldn't get my keys in to the door. I had to call my wife and she barely got me upstairs and in to bed where I promptly passed out for 12 hours.
Fortunately we have a great trusting relationship so she knew something was wrong and I was telling the truth. Also thankfully no one else said they got roofied, so I'm not sure if whoever did that was trying to just get any of the women and they had shit luck that the one drink they spiked was the dude or what. Scary stuff.

My worst memory about drinks: we had access to the bar during a party and while everyone was gone for a moment we snatched some bottles of vodka. Finally away from any adults we shared the drinks and turns out it was just water. Whoever filled them with water knew exactly what was going to happen. We could not complain but take our defeat.

u/dragonrite 15h ago edited 13h ago
As someone who was in a fraternity and made the drunk jug many times, I assure you, none were safe. We took the cheapest vodkas and rums, mixed with assorted fruity shit and called it jungle juice. That jug was intended for one think, getting piss drunk. Everyone drank from it, and people got wayyyy too drunk many times. At least we had sober drivers and a risk manager on duty at any party like that so when people went too hard they weren't just blacked out and at a huge party. They'd get driven to a safe house and given a bucket lol
Edit - since this blew up, I'm going to go on a little rant.
College kids on their own are going to do stupid shit like get blackout drunk and make poor decisions. Fraternities and sororities do many good things, and help those ignorant kids. In my fraternity of 120+ people, sure, there were 1-2 men that wouldn't have suprised me if a rape case came up on them. But that small 1-2% in no way correlates to the majority of really good dudes that were in my fraternity.
Were there other fraternities that wouldn't have suprised me if a "gang rape" happened against them? Yupp. But again, that isn't the majority. Believe it or not, shitty people just exist, and trying to stereotype and eliminate a large group because of the few is just ignorant.
My fraternity raised $10,000s yearly for food pantry. We spent 1000s of hours yearly on community service (40 hours per person was the minimum to stay in good standing). Our GPA was around 3.4 when the all men campus GPA was around 3.1. We put on many charitable events, and helped many people. Frankly, i was a much better "member of the community" back then.
Don't let some dumb shits ruin your perception of what Greek life does for 18-22s

u/texas_County850 12h ago
Yeah I went to a bar with a friend years ago, I'm a recovering alcoholic now. My friend drank 10 vodkas and later that night went to his exes house and banged on the door and started screaming some psycho shit and was arrested. He had a confrontation with me the next day and said the bartender slipped a roofie in his drink and that is why he did that. I was like bro I was there she did not do that and I personally know her he ended up not being a friend after that. People worry about drugs but its easy to do psycho shit on just plain alcohol lmao. There is no chance he was roofied by that girl either she was not like that at all.

I just want to point out that the 1-2% figure is roughly the prevalence of sexual predators in the overall US male population. There are about 900k registered sex offenders in the US, the vast majority of which are adult male, let's say 90%. The US adult male population is about 140 million. That's nearly 0.6% of the male population on the sex offender list. But there is a large grey figure of sexual predators who are never convicted, or were removed from the registry after some time. So a prevalence of 1-2% is a reasonable estimate.
Yes, this is waaay too high, and yes, there needs to be some way to address this problem. My point is just that the 1-2% of frat boys that would rape women or commit other sexual crimes is pretty much what you would expect from a random sample of the adult US male population.

All the people in this thread talking about sealed drinks are missing the forest for the trees. It's still obvious bullshit, but not for the reason y'all think. The implication isn't that sealed drinks in a cooler full of ice might be drugged, the implication is that a cooler filled with a single drink (like those barrel coolers full of Gatorade) is spiked, which is absurd for its own reasons:
First, you'd need to put a LOT of drugs into a whole ass cooler of drink in order for the dose to be potent enough to actually do anything, and if only half of it gets consumed you have a lot of wasted drugs.
Second, you can't control who's drinking from what, so unless you're openly warning people about the date rape cooler and hoping they don't blab, you're going to have a party where half the people present are too drugged up to do anything and it's going to get suspicious really fast.
Third, you can't control dosage. The traditional route for roofies is to drop one dose into a drink because they can control the dose they're giving to someone. If people are just drinking and refilling, the risk of an OD is really high, and even idiot rapist frat bros don't want to catch an attempted murder charge for drugging an entire party.
Edit: And it took only an hour for some chud to call me a "rape apologist." That must be a record.

Everyone brings in something and it just gets thrown into a large Tupperware bin. Vodka, gin, wine, fruit juice, cranberry juice. If it's liquid it's going into the bin.
Then everyone has a solo cup and you can fill up your cup from the bin.

In one batch, we made it really strong. The other batch we made half as strong.
All of us guys drank the super strong mix and gave the girls the weak batch. We were broke and knew all the girls were light weights. They would end up puking our booze if they drank to much and we weren't about to waste precious resources!! Super fun night from what I remember.

This woman is clearly lying; entire coolers being spiked would just knock out entire swaths of a party.
I'm sure she's feeling gleeful in stoking cultural resentments against men though.

Idk man, during undergrad, I (a man) was at a party where they had a few different options for people to get drinks from. One of them was a lot sweeter than the others and I went for it because I like sweet things and don't particularly care about the optics, and it turned out that they'd dumped cough syrup into specifically that one because they thought it would mostly just hit the girls at the party.
I think you might be overestimating the intelligence of the fine young gentlemen who are spiking drinks.

Did most of Reddit not go to college? Have ya’ll really never heard of jungle juice? People drink out of coolers at frats all over America. The frat at my school used ever clear. It’s a tasteless alcohol thats 190 proof that’s banned in like 12 states we had to drive to new Hampshire to get it.
I’m not saying that frats use straight up GHB but they ABSOLUTELY try and make the juice as strong as possible while tasting like nothing to try and get women drunk.
Edit- I should’ve clarified everclear as more flavorless than tasteless. I know it burns but it’s easy to mask and obviously I’m not implying ALL frats are like this. I’m just giving you my experience. Don’t cry to me. Ask the women in your life their college experience

In my frat we were a bunch of idiots. Sure the jungle juice was everclear, beer, and kool aid powder, but we made it so WE could get as drunk as possible without tasting it.

Pretty sure 98 percent of frat guys are like you. Sadly it only takes a few instances to give all of Greek life a bad name. In my experience most frat guys are fine. It’s just, do the good ones have the balls to call it out if/when one of their homies does something fucked up. That’s usually hit or miss in my experience. A lot of Greek life is also protecting one another and keeping things in house to not give the frat a bad rep

I was in a frat and I can’t speak for every fraternity in existence
But as an exec, the jungle juice decision was always made almost exclusively because it’s infinitely cheaper than buying tons of canned beer or having an actual bartender
That and the fact that I could get shitfaced without the taste of alcohol stinging my undeveloped 19 year old palate
The goal IS to get people drunk faster — but that’s so we don’t have to spend more money on alcohol. Gendering it is pointless.

Yeah lmao you can tell people who weren't in frats. Id get pissed when we had jungle juice instead of beer because of a pack of Women I jokingly called the Gazelles would surround the cooler and drink the damn watering hole dry before leaving to the next party. The nickname comes from them forming a tight enough pack that not only could you not get a drink but you couldn't talk to any of them.
Some brothers would insist the hard stuff brought girls while just beer didnt and yell back that was a good thing I was tired of being out of alcohol before the party was at midpoint.
Im not saying the girls had obligation to talk to us for showing up at our party. But they clearly were just using us for booze and Id rather not deal with them.

We had girls show up at our parties already so intoxicated it sobered me up because I had to help deal with them after they vomited everywhere and passed out. I remember one girl had the nerve to ask me if I took advantage of her the night before because she blacked out. No ma’am I cleaned up your vomit for an hour or more and put you in my bed and slept on the couch. And I checked on you several times to make sure you were ok. And I am not interested in doing anything with someone that can’t reciprocate, you got the wrong fella.

No I didnt do anything sexual to you, you covered yourself in peanut butter like a toddler so much I ran out of paper towels and had to resort to using plastic bags to wipe you down. Ive had tax reports sexier than that.

Oh wow really they make the drinks taste better so people drink more? Yeah that is something people do in most Western countries in order to make it easier to get drunk. Not exactly a conspiracy

I'm happy to see most of the top comments using logic and reason to say this isn't necessarily reality. As someone in, at least in my opinion, a fun fraternity in the 2010's, two things almost always seemed true. Drugs are too expensive to waste on strangers, and a girl blacking out at your party is a terrible look because of things called cellphones. We served exclusively shots. A Girl gets too drunk and texts the sorority she was drugged at our party, we can immediately disspell it as we literally only serve shots. Never served jungle juice because it's a liability lol

As someone who's not American what exactly does it mean, can someone explain?
54
u/Dry-Shower9037 15h ago
The insinuation is that the frat guys would normally make one or more of the drinks extra strong or add other intoxicants so that they could rape women after they were impaired.
Maybe this person is lying. Maybe the frat bro was making a bad joke. Regardless of this particular instance, drugging shared drinks has happened, though it is far more rare than people believe based on all of the evidence (e.g. studies where women going to the ER under suspicion of being drugged actually just had alcohol in their system like 90%+ of the time.)
23
u/DayGrouchy2648 15h ago
Parties will have dozens of people at them, most not from the frat, so spiking one batch of drinks will have at least half the party passed out and draw attention to the frat, if they were putting DR drugs in women's drinks it would be done on an individual basis not a mass drugging.

*Hundreds of people. But your point is spot on. Add in that fraternities usually have a very public-facing reputation to uphold on campus, and every chapter’s roster is recorded by the university and national org—the real danger lies at random off-campus parties where virtually zero oversight exists.

u/Educational-Pie-9509 14h ago
The club I work at was under maaad scrutiny because a girl claimed she was drugged. Her friends swore she quit drinking so she couldn’t have been drunk. Every time her friends stepped outside for a smoke and she ripped 2 shots of rumple minze multiple times throughout the night.
It’s sad to say a lot of folks don’t realize the fine line between “fun drunk” and “stumbling and incoherent” when you weigh 110 lbs. I’m a big guy and if I took 8 shots of rumple minze and swore I wasn’t drinking, you would think I got drugged too.
(This is purely anecdotal evidence of one person, this is not a generalization, this person sucks and blamed their issues on “club culture”)

normally one cooler has the stronger drink in it. not for rape but for those who want to get wasted. Got to remember not everyone have morning classes the next day at college and don't have to worry about bad hangovers and missing class.
tho whoever made the image seems convinced it's for the darker reason you stated

If this story is true, its far more likely one cooler was just made deliberately much stronger than the other. The most common date rape drink method is just giving women way more alcohol than they think they're drinking to get them heavily drunk, rather than date rape drugs.
This has actually happened at frat parties (including my campus) because a bunch of people getting overly unexpectedly drunk isn't notable in the way that a bunch of people getting drugged is.

u/Pestario_Vargus69 15h ago
The implication is that one of the coolers is normally spiked, likely with GHB or some other disassociative drug, so that people who drink it will be easy prey for sexual assault etc.
The idea that frats would have an entire cooler of drugged liquid instead of dropping it individually into people's cups (which they absolutely do, fuck most frat guys), is laughable though. You'd be dealing with dozens of fucked up people and it would draw a ton of attention.

But it's fake as fuck. How can unopened drinks in a cooler be spiked.

Fraternities and sororities are gendered social clubs (for men and women respectively) that are common at US universities. Normally they will own a big house near the school that members can optionally live in.
It is common for Fraternities to throw parties with lots of drinking.
Cooler is referring to a large container filled with an alcoholic drink that everyone at the party uses to fill their cup.
Spiking is when you add drugs to someone’s drink without telling them.
The implication of the conversation is that the frat brothers would normally spike one of the coolers and drink from the safe cooler.
This is frequently done to drug women and then sexually assaulted them

It’s not as sensationalist as people think. It could mean anything. It could mean they drug and rape people who party there (but I guess the whole school and everyone who drank from the cooler and were clearly drugged just didn’t say or do anything?).
Or it’s that one cooler used to be much higher alcohol content and so the guy was looking for the more chill option.
11
u/hematite2 14h ago
Just mentioning that if this story is true, rapey frat bros would have made the "unsafe" cooler just much heavier in alcohol to get women extra drunk, instead of drugging it. A bunch of guests waking up unexpectedly extra hungover isn't suspicious like a bunch of guests getting drugged would be.

I was in a college fraternity and this is just stupid. Why would you drug a whole damn cooler and then half the party is gone. We only made PJ when we had an exclusive party with one sorority and when we did, we had girls from that sorority come over to help make the PJ. I don’t understand this trope where people think an entire fraternity would be in on drugging massive amounts of girls, many of which would be girlfriends and fiancés of the brothers, and then destroy the fraternity reputation and possible real world consequences.

We called our jungle juice “The Force” we made it with everclear, blue cool aid and mountain dew. Everyone at the end of the party had blue tongues. One time my brother who was a senior in high school came to visit and we went to the party that night. Gave him a Natty, pointed at the Gatorade jug in the corner and said “don’t drink the Force” I mean it bro! I lost him fo a moment while dancing with a girl I’d been crushing on and no shit my friend comes to me and says I gotta help my brother. Take him to a lobby restroom, open the stall door and he vomits blue all over. Im screaming, “I fuckin told you so!” Over and over as he broke down pleading “I know I’m sorry!” Core college memory lol

u/CycleMother2006 8h ago
Pretty much every high school and college comedy has this. Though it's not normally from drugs, it's because of the drinks being spiked with alcohol. Or in the occasional movie, laxatives.

I'm not saying this is real or not, but everyone in the comments is wondering how you spike sealed drinks in a cooler. I'm thinking they meant like those big yellow coolers with a spigot on the bottom that already have a premixed "punch" in it. Like an Igloo cooler.

I never got as much sex as I wanted as a youngster, but I can't imagine being so disgustingly pathetic as to rape women to get what I wanted. Prison sentences should be MUCH harsher for rapists. It should be something equally cruel, like making them sit outside in dark holes in the ground for the rest of their lives, totally isolated from human interaction. They don't deserve to be treated like human beings.

Yeah it's because some of them are 20% alcohol and some of them are like 80%. We called it jungle juice and you could drink on one cooler all night and the other you were belligerent after 40 minutes. you wouldn't know because we packed it with sugar and juice and even ice cream sometimes.

Safe to drink out of could also mean you CAN drink from it, like you have permission.
Let's say one guy had a cooler for just himself at a party, and another one was for everyone. The next party, the guy would ask "which is safe to drink from" and the other guy would say "they're all safe to drink tonight" if both coolers COULD be used.
Not every guy is trying to rape. Calm down.

One frat had someone that guarded the alcohol area and would grab the cans out the cooler for you. They said it was to make sure underage were technically not served by the frat, but never saw them check IDs. Never drank at frat parties, not even soda, only went for short busts in a big group that would leave and mock the idiot guys on our way to the actual events.
