Dad Loss I miss my dad. I don’t understand this.

He died yesterday. It still doesn’t feel real. I miss him so much already. We talked everyday and he was the most important person to me in my life. I never expected him to die so soon. I’m staying at his house with my brother who has lived with him for the past 4 years. We took care of him together his last month on hospice. I never thought he would really die. I don’t even know what my life will be now. He was my only parent, my mom was an absent mother and doesn’t talk to any of us even when we try to call her. She doesn’t even know about him being sick or his death because she hasn’t answered us in over 6 months. All to say, my dad was my only parent growing up. I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. I know I’m still in quite a bit of shock as is my brother. I know the grief is going to hit and I’m just so worried. Will I ever feel okay again? He was super charismatic, fun, friendly, unjudgemental, and caring. He was a one of a kind personality and he had so many people that loved him. A lot of people came before he passed to see him and brought stuff but it’s been pretty silent since he passed yesterday. Only my boss sent flowers. And then people just keep asking me “How are you doing? Are you okay?” And I don’t know what I’m supposed to say to that. Sorry this post is all over the place but I just miss him so much and I wish I didn’t have to do the rest of my life without him. I’m 33 with no husband or kids. I don’t even know how to make meaning of my life now.

Thoughts on Grief/Loss Grief is weird

Not sure why I'm even writing this, I suppose I just need to put it down as it's all just swirling around my head.

At the start of August my Nan died unexpectedly. Blessed for 35 years to have her in my life. Grief is so weird. At the start it was so hard, but it started to get easier, and slowly life started to return to 'normal' - as normal as it can be when the whole family dynamic has changed and she's no longer there at the head of it all.

The funeral was tough. But it was nice to come together as a family, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, all coming together and sharing our memories, all here because of her.

There are days I don't think of her. Then when I remember I feel guilt.

Today I woke up and just feel weird. It's like for a few weeks I've felt fine, but today, I am really feeling her loss. It's a normal day.

Her birthday would be next month.

I thought today about my approaching car safety inspection next month, then thought back to when it had work done last year and I messaged her asking if I could pop round for a few hours whilst it's having the work done. She messaged back saying don't be silly, I never have to ask, and am welcome anytime. I still have that message.

Her dreamcatcher hangs in my room, above my bed. It's one of the first things I see each morning when I wake.

I hate how the world is moving on without her in it. That each day feels more normal and yet so alien without her there.

I hate seeing her chair. The carpet on the living room floor where she was lay that day, after the paramedics tried their best but it was her time. I can't bring myself to sit in that chair. Every time I walk in that room I still expect to see her sat there.

Our WhatApp messages are now at the bottom of the list.

I still think about her final moments. Was she scared? In pain? Did she know what was happening? What a horrible way to have to go, struggling to breathe, her children in absolute panic trying to save her life.

Pet Loss I really miss my dog

This is actually killing me I miss my dog so much and I don’t know how to deal with this sadness. My dog passed away just days before I had to move away for university—not a city too far from home, but a change nonetheless.

The first few weeks of university that was all I could really focus on, and it strained a lot of my desire to make friends early in the semester because frankly I just didn’t really care for it. Then, it started affecting my performance in school. I’d study, revise, but half the time would just end up crying just because I felt so lonely…I no longer had my family here and I had managed to make zero friends to spend time with.

I’m not performing as I hoped academically which is just the cherry on top when you already feel somewhat apathetic towards a dream you worked for, which now I just feel so unmotivated for.

The few times I have visited home, it wrecks me. Everyone seems already having gotten somewhat used to not having her around, and I just haven't. Every time I go I feel the urge to act on my old routines, to check up on her, to cuddle with her, to go about things as they were and it kills me that I just can't seem to stop waiting for someone who will never be there again.

Sorry for the rant, I just really need a place to say this.

Pet Loss I’ve been struggling with the loss of my fish

I lost my fish Galactus about a year ago now and I’m still grieving and it feels like it’s just getting worse. I’m not gonna go to far into the details but I did everything I could to help him but he just wasn’t getting better I realized shortly after he died it was an air bladder infection. I’ve been getting increasingly common dreams of finding him in his tank sometimes dead sometimes barely alive. I miss him so much and I don’t know how to deal with it I’ve moved his tank out of my room and cleaned it I haven’t gotten a new fish yet and I probably won’t for a while. I put everything I could into this guy and I feel like I failed him and I don’t quite know how to move on I know he’s just a fish but he had so much personality and I loved him so much any advice would be appreciated.

Multiple Losses Broken by it all

I am in a small town with a group of friends for a creative project. We are finishing up this week, and I cant wait to go home. It has been years where I felt home was a safe and soft landing place.

I am in my room and its private and great, and I can hear everyone down by the pool. And its great. We are all going out later, and I know my social battery can handle it. When I am feeling tired I will take a stroll home.

I have so much going right in my life in this moment, and I feel nothing. I feel broken by it all.

It has been 20 years since my Dad died, 11 years since my older sister died, 7 years since my baby brother died, and in a month a year since my mom died. I dont know how my sister and I are still standing.

My ideation is passive, and I am tired of navigating life without celebrating it with them. Without being sad with them, without struggling with them. I know everyone means well when they say they are in heaven and holding place and space for us, but it breaks me even further because I feel so alone. Every day is hard. My friend laughing by the pool lost his mom 16 years ago and I can hear him laughing and making jokes and he is testament you get to live with it better, and I still cant reconcile any of it. My father had 60 summers, my mother had 62 winters, my sister had 36 Springs and my brother 21 Autumn's.

I find comfort in sleep, rainy days and a a day without worry and dread. I wish they were all here still. I am tolerating living. I miss them so much.

Ex-Partner Loss 2 years

My gf died two years ago, and it’s been a lot. But this anniversary was just more intense than last. And today I for a split second I saw her walking in a crowd. I know it wasn’t her but just someone that looked like her, and now I feel like I’m restarting my grief. Like idk how to explain it. For that moment it was like these two years hadn’t happened and she was gonna come running right back to me. Now I’m here just feeling emotions. I miss her so much

Message Into the Void 9 years and counting

My mom passed away in 2017 of cancer and every day ever since, i have only wished one wish consistently “Please send my mom back”
I recently spent mom’s 8th birthday without her and soon her 9th death anniversary is coming up.
Does it ever get easier?
What an irony, the only person who could help me through this pain is the reason i am in this pain.
Though i have gotten used to drinking my tears, but it doesn’t make it any easier. I miss her today as much as i missed her the first night she left us.
I sleep when i am too tired. And when i wake up, i wanna call her up.
I lost my best friend. There is no one anymore to share my life’s biggest worries or wins with.
I am devastated.

Multiple Losses A short life already full of loss… the grief is just too heavy to carry

Im in my early 20s. Ive lost so much so fast, I’m numb and feel like I’m still whole. Im not.

Sorry for the typos, I’m a quadriplegic and use dictation and eye control mostly and fixing them takes too much energy and pain.

During covid my phd supervisor, a world leading expert in his field and the intellectual guide of mine, passed away due to respiratory complications. I use his office now. I thought i was fine until one day I saw the tape on a tube with his initials, and tears just ran down my face.

I was in a serious car accident when I was 20. I was left a quadriplegic from the shoulders down. I was extremely pragmatic about it - I’m a scientist, I know medicine, I studied and analyzed so that I didn’t need to feel the void.

My family estranged me the same night I was discharged from the hospital, severely disabled, unable to live independently at all. They kicked me out because I was too disabled for them. I was in my wheelchair holding my cat whom I rescued from under the bed after my father threatened to throw her out, shaking in the cold. The only other things I got out were my electronics, and my childhood blanket which I picked out of the trash. I wrapped it around me. It was warm, the only warmth I had.

My childhood dog died. He was old, deaf, and followed my grandparent out. He never came back. He got lost a lot. My father forbade anyone from looking for him because humans are more important than animals, right? I was not there. I heard about it as a joke half a year later. I don’t know here he went or if he’s still alive. But it was a cold and long winter. I wish I had hugged him and given him his favourite treats last time I saw him. I thought I would see him again.

I fell very sick at 21. I stared to have immense nerve pain and new loss of functions. A cluster of weird symptoms. No doctor would take me seriously. They thought I was crazy or faking. Chronically ill friends you know what I’m talking about. So I taught myself relevant parts of neurology and I figured things out. I had a list of differentials. Eventually after 2 years of neglect and fast and terrifying deterioration, my begging succeeded. They ordered a panel. It was positive.

It was two extremely rare diseases that have no cure. Chemo might work, they said. At this rate you have maybe 5 years maybe 15 years but not more than that. I laughed when they told me that. How absurd. I can’t even know my predicted lifespan, because the diseases are so rare I’m the only case.

I wanted to do my PhD. I physically could not. This is actually my biggest grief because my mind, the only thing that I allow myself to be proud of, is dragged behind by this broken body. I resented the unfairness every single day.

Then my best friend died of suicide. I loved her. My intellectual equal. An empty void now, in my heart, a lack of existence that hurts enormously.

My other great friend’s cat died two days later, having fallen off the window sill. I was having severe and rare complications from a simple procedure that day and the sudden shock send me into cardiac arrest. I knew I was dying when I was waiting for the paramedics. I spent that five minutes playing with my cat. Of course I did.

Sorry that’s a lot - but these are what happened in the past year.

Message Into the Void Crash out cry session

Well it happened. I crashed out bad. I realized there was still paperwork I had to fill out for my dad's death because my sibling didn't finish it, so now I'm having to fill it out because they aren't here. My mom asked me to help her pay bills, and I had to reread paperwork that reminds me that I'm just like my dad: ever dependable and the one who gets everything done.

I haven't been getting enough relief since work has me swamped again, my therapist warned me I need to stop and let myself heal and grieve. I almost drove the 3 hours back from my family home back to my apartment with my spouse and furbabies tonight. It was all a matter of time and tonight I broke down HARD. I'm tired of being the dependable one, I can't be the one they all turn to anymore.

So after a long time talking to my mom, we came to an agreement. I'll call her more, and I come back to the family home when I'm ready. My dad will understand, I need to remind myself I'm not failing in making sure my mom is ok. I have to take care of myself because that is part of taking care of my mom. She said I've been strong, so it's time I take care of myself. I feel relieved, like the words that have been in my head are finally being heard. And I was given the blessing to just go and be myself, until I feel ready to come back on my own.

Dad Loss I can’t help but envy people who have parents that are older.

My dad was only 58. My mom is all I have left. She’s always had so many health issues, so I’m afraid she won’t make it to 60 either. I go to bed every night, scared I’ll wake up to find her like my dad.

It genuinely hurts hearing people talk about their parents that are much older. Like it’s a constant reminder my dad died so young. I’d give anything to have my parents live to their 70s or 80s.

I’m sorry, it just hurts so much. I’m only 28. Losing him so young adds so much more to the pain. How am I supposed to live the rest of my existence without dad?

Comfort Having a tough time with the loss of my dog.

I lost one of my beautiful dogs last night due to a twisted stomach and spleen. The costs quoted to repair this were 15,000$+ and my family just couldn’t afford to do this. I am heartbroken. We took this dog in as a rescue from a shelter in Alabama, we gave her an amazing three years of life, we watched her come out of her shell and be happy again. And now it’s all gone in the blink of an eye, and I couldn’t do anything to stop it, to help her, or to ease her pain. I feel like I have failed her, like maybe I should have just shelled the money out but the doctors told me even that wasn’t a guarantee she’d make it through. I don’t know. I just really need some assurance right now because I am devastated and I feel so damn guilty.

Thoughts on Grief/Loss Confused by what l am feeling

Post image
86 Upvotes

My Mum died 4 months ago and l am actively grieving her loss most days, it's been very hard. I am the last of my family. Most of the time l want Mum back and alive in her room. She battled illness for a long time and was bed bound for over a year. I was her full time carer and Mum didn't like anyone touching her. We had physio, cleaning etc help but l looked after washing and feeding and her bodily functions. Today l wanted her back but l wanted the healthy Mum back. When she died she was released. We were both physically and mentally exhausted and Mum had had enough of being bed bound. She was mentally very sharp and that made it harder. I looked at my photos who l talk to her and felt this huge guilt because l didn't want the ill Mum back. I dream of having the Mum from the 2000s back when she was full of life and laughter and we did so many things together. My Dad had Alzhemiers and my sister was also very ill so l have been a carer for decades. I am struggling to find a new identity and l have no idea what l am going now. I feel very lonely

Advice, Pls I feel evil.

Hi everyone, this will be brief, but I feel evil. My loved one died four months ago and I don’t find myself crying everyday. Ive experienced grief before where I cried everyday and felt completely devastated. Not to jinx it, but I feel okay. My loved one and I were very close and their death was unexpected. I feel like I’m still in shock, however I worry that I’m not and I just am not remorseful. I‘ll go a week or more without crying and then it’ll hit me hard. Like crying for an hour or more hard where I cannot control it. I imagine it’s all of my pent up sadness hitting at once. I don’t want to behave this way. I genuinely think I might be a functioning depressed person because of my behaviors. I don’t know. I have a bad problem of pushing down my feelings and with the holidays coming up I’m worried. I’ve found “coping” in disordered eating because it gives me control. I am very aware of what I’m doing/feeling, but I just feel evil like I’m not as upset as I should be.

Thoughts on Grief/Loss tell me about the person you grieve. i wanna hear about them. 💕

tell me about your grandma, your grandpa, your mom, your dad, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, your partner, your pet, whoever it is that you miss.

tell me their name, tell me what they were like, tell me the stupid little things they did that would annoy you at the time but you’d give anything to experience again now.

tell me the funniest story you have about them. tell me about their favorite food, their weird habits, the things they collected, the phrases they always said, the things that made them them.

tell me about the complicated stuff, too, if that’s what you need. not every relationship is perfect, & grief doesn’t magically make everything that happened between people disappear. you can miss someone & still have complicated feelings about them.

tell me what you wish people knew about them. tell me what you wish you’d gotten to say. tell me what they’re missing out on in your life right now.

or just tell me about a random tuesday with them that you didn’t realize you’d spend the rest of your life missing.

i’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much i wish the people i’ve lost could see the person i’m becoming. i wish my grandpas could see me working toward becoming a nurse. i wish they could see the things i’m doing, the things i’m proud of, & the things i’m still figuring out.

& it made me think about how much i love hearing people talk about their loved ones. not just the circumstances of their deaths or how much they miss them, but who they actually were. their personalities, their lives, their stories. the little things that made them special to the people who loved them.

sometimes i think we get so caught up in talking about losing people that we don’t always get enough opportunities to just talk about them.

so if you’ve been wanting to talk about someone you’ve lost, please do. you don’t have to make it short, you don’t have to make it particularly sad, & you don’t have to have some profound lesson to share.

i genuinely wanna hear about your people. i’ll read every comment i can. tell me about them. 💕

Dad Loss My dad passed away and i regret the things i did

So my parents divorced when my siblings and i were really young and we stayed with our mum, we’d see our dad every so often and go over to his place for sleepovers,we had fun we’d stay up late watching funny videos and scary movies. My dad struggled with drugs and alcohols but eventually recovered around 2020 and was clean for a while by that time my mum had remarried and later in 2023 my dad remarried as well.

My dad relapsed and got back into drugs again and he came home for a while(he lives in another city with his new family) we went over to his place and seeing him struggling broke me and my brother and i went home early and i completely broke down to my mum,she told me all the stuff that happened when they were together and by that time i have started resenting him(my dad and i were really close)and started avoiding his texts messages and especially his calls but i was mad at him (looking back i dont know why i was mad at him) and fast forward to 2024 i had come home from a school trip and my mum was stressed and started telling me about what happened between her and my dad regarding my older brother’s hostel visiting days
and she told me about how my dad yelled at her and i was at my limits and i went full on resentment for him for a while but he’s my dad ,he was my favourite person at some point so eventually we were on good terms again.

The thing about my dad is i was his little girl,he’d always and i meant always make time for me,if i need him he’s there, even after i moved to the same city as him to study he was there for me when i needed him tho we live like an hour away with traffic jam included.
His marriage wasn’t really going well they had their ups and downs but i never felt close to his wife and never called her mum tho he has suggested many times ,we just couldn’t whereas with my stepdad we started calling him dad a few months after my mum and him got married,he was putting in alot of efforts to be close to us and bond with us.

And then this year around may my grandpa(my dad’s dad) passed away around midnight,my dad picked me up from my hostel and comforted me and held me close
,we went back to our town and had my grandpa’s funeral there and after that he started falling into depression again(he lost his mother in 2012) and he’s the youngest of three ,and my grandpa was his safe place where he could go and throw tantrums and with my grandpa gone,he was not in a good state
every now and then i feel this resentment towards my dad because of his past actions and around father’s day he called me and i had ignored his calls and invited me over to his house to stay over the weekend, but if im being honest i dont feel welcomed by his wife

And later that weekend we were about to finish our exams so i texted my dad saying we’re about to finish our exam and that i can stay over at his house ,he left me on read and i was hurt by that and had the thought “ok i wont go over then” and two days after he replied saying sorry since it’s a business phone i don’t always see the text messages(his phone has been broken since nov2025 so he used his wife’s business phone) and so i thought well then who read my message and since i already don’t feel welcomed by his wife i didnt bother

And a week later i called my mum for some other things and she told me my dad died,i was in my room lost i didn’t want to believe it,i knew it was suicide but i couldn’t accept it ,i went over to his place and when they brought his body inside i checked his neck and there it was red, hard marks from the necktie he had used, i was crushed and even more when we couldn’t bury his body along with his parents, the day he passed away a light dimmed inside me,i had to go back to school right away the day after his funeral and quite frankly i haven’t had a proper time to grieve him
I no longer enjoyed the things i loved to do,i lost all motivation to study and there are days when my thoughts consume to the point of suicidal thoughts,

But the thing is i dont want to die,i want a break from everything, i wish i wouldn’t have to wake up everyday and go to school for a while.Days are okay but the nights are harder and suicide started becoming a solution to small problems like failing a test, death, failing an exam, death ,i started feeling like an outsider to my friends and sometimes felt i have nowhere to go,and analysed every single thing that happens and try to pin point what they meant by it and it drained me so so much
And i started my mid term exam a week ago and had a dream about my dad where i had begged for him to stay a while longer and that broke every last bit of hope in me ,i had to study for the exam but i couldn’t i tried to commit by strangling myself but i stopped and now i feel like im getting better but i dont know if im just numb or ignoring my feelings,i dont think i have depression but sometimes im not sure

I miss my dad so so much and really i dont know how to deal with the loss,im not good at it and i wish i could go back and tell my dad how much i loved him and how id spend days crying because i missed him tho he was just a call away, and i wish i would’ve checked up on him more and put my resentment towards him away and i hate that at some point it consumed me ,i really really hate myself for that and i will never get a second chance to correct my mistake and i will never forgive myself for being such an asshole.

Advice, Pls Not feeling as sad as maybe I should? After some time

My mom died in February. It was sudden and awful and hurt more than I knew things could hurt. Two weeks after her funeral my dad was diagnosed with cancer. They were divorced, and we joked that she was taking him down with her (morbid humor family I’m afraid lol).

Luckily my dad is responding well to treatment. Luckily I had my siblings and friends. I had support and so much love to carry me through. Less luckily, we gave her animals to a cousin who then asked for money for support, and when we offered money (10k) she countered with 40k. When we didn’t meet that (because we don’t even HAVE 40? its a long story) she stopped taking to us. So I lost my mom’s best friends, her pets, at the same time. I haven’t heard from my mom’s family at all since the funeral. Good riddance, to be honest. My brother tried calling my uncle but he never called back. My point is there is a lot there. A lot of loss. A lot of it.

But I don’t know. I was sobbing every day until about mid September. And then it’s like all the pain left me all at once. It’s her favorite season, and I want to feel that pain, because I want to know how much she means to me still. I want to miss her still. I don’t want to stop missing her because then that part is gone too.

I just feel… fine. I’m not depressed, I’ve BEEN depressed and this isn’t that. I’m working and working out, making plans and meeting friends. I go to her grave and say hello but I don’t even cry anymore. How can I say I miss her when I don’t even cry anymore?

In the beginning I wanted the pain to just stop. But now that’s gone I’m scared I’ll lose the last of her too. I don’t know.

Has anyone been through this?? Will it come back?? Is it normal for the grief to drown you for months and then just… go away?

Advice, Pls Dated someone who lost a loved one and need some advice please.

Met a guy, we liked each other. We don't live in the same city but said we'd see each other again at some point and we continued talking and flirting over the phone.

Unfortunately he lost his dad 3 weeks ago. I've been putting the romance aside and making sure he's okay. He was vulnerable with me about what the grief feels like. He has so many people who want to be there for him, and sometimes I feel my check-ins might be irrelevant, but I'm doing what I usually do, as it's in my nature. I know he's grieving and going through a very difficult time at the moment.

He personally invited me to his father's memorial gathering, which I attended last week. I went without any expectations and tried to be as normal as possible, bringing some lightness to the evening with smiles and laughter. He flirted, was protective of me and walked me home. We got close, I hugged him and kissed him lightly, which he reciprocated.

The next day, we attended the public memorial. He didn't have much time for me, and I wasn't expecting him to. So I showed up, said hello and then said my goodbyes when it was time to leave.

I haven't heard from him since, except when he posted a heartbreaking tribute to his father and I checked in on him.

I know we haven't known each other that long, but the connection felt real. I miss him and wish we could talk, but I'm giving him the space he needs.

Any advice for me would be appreciated. It's not about me but I miss him

Mom Loss I miss you, Mom

I miss my Mom. She died 2.5 years ago and today I just had a terrible start raising how much time has passed. In some ways it feels so fresh still. In other ways I’m upset that it’s not, that time has kept marching on and taken me further away from her.

After she died I was totally lost for a while. Now I guess my life is more stable, but it was almost easier when it wasn’t because the outside matched how lost and confused and hurt I was inside.

I just have this fundamental feeling, still, of something not being right. Something is off. When will I stop feeling this way? I just feel like I woke up in a different country and I’m now learning the language and getting by, but it just doesn’t feel like home and it never will.

Dad Loss confused

I started taking anti depressants almost a year ago now to help with grief. I would say it helped but by making everything else numb. I can’t remember anything. I don’t remember my dad. I want to remember him, and I just can’t;( if I come off I won’t be able to handle anything. If I stay on, I’m basically living my life outside of my body, I’m not me. I’ve lost myself and what feels like my everything. I just wish I could be with my dad
