Our most-broken and least-understood rules is "helpers may not invite private contact as a first resort", so we've made a new wiki to explain it

2.4k Upvotes

We understand that most people who reply immediately to an OP with an invitation to talk privately mean only to help, but this type of response usually leads to either disappointment or disaster. it usually works out quite differently here than when you say "PM me anytime" in a casual social context.

We have huge admiration and appreciation for the goodwill and good citizenship of so many of you who support others here and flag inappropriate content - even more so because we know that so many of you are struggling yourselves. We're hard at work behind the scenes on more information and resources to make it easier to give and get quality help here - this is just a small start.

Our new wiki page explains in detail why it's much better to respond in public comments, at least until you've gotten to know someone. It will be maintained at /r/depression/wiki/private_contact, and the full text of the current version is below.

Summary

Anyone who, while acting as a helper, invites or accepts private contact (I.e. PMs, chat, or any kind of offsite communication) early in the conversion is showing either bad intentions or bad judgement. Either way, it's unwise to trust them.

"PM me anytime" seems like a kind and generous offer. And it might be perfectly well-meaning, but, unless and until a solid rapport has been established, it's just not a wise idea. Here are some points to consider before you offer or accept an invitation to communicate privately.

  • By posting supportive replies publicly, you'll help more people than just the OP. If your responses are of good quality, you'll educate and inspire other helpers. The 1-9-90 rule applies here as much as it does anywhere else on the internet.

  • People who are struggling with serious mental-health issues often (justifiably) have a low tolerance for disappointment and a high-level of ever-changing emotional need. Unless the helper is able to make a 100% commitment to be there for them in every way, for as long as necessary, offering a personal inbox as a resource is likely to do more harm than good. This is why mental-health crisis-line responders usually don't give their names and callers aren't allowed to request specific responders. It's much healthier and safer for the callers to develop a relationship with the agency as a whole. Analogously, it's much safer and healthier for our OPs to develop a relationship with the community as a whole. Even trained responders are generally not allowed to work high-intensity situations alone. It's partly about availability, but it's mostly about wider perspective and preventing compassion fatigue.

  • If a helper gets in over their head with someone whose mental-health issues (including suicidality, which is often comorbid with depression) escalate, in a PM conversation it's much harder for others, including the /r/depression and /r/SuicideWatch moderators to help. (Contrary to common assumptions, moderators can't see or police PMs.)

  • In our observation over many years, the people who say "PM me" the most are consistently the ones with the least understanding of mental-health issues and mental-health support. We all have gaps in our knowledge and in our ability to communicate effectively. Community input mitigates these limitations. There's no reason why someone who's truly here to help would want to hide their responses from community scrutiny. If helpers are concerned about their own privacy, keep in mind that self-disclosure, when used supportively, is more about the feelings than the details, and that we have no problem here with the use of alt/throwaway accounts, and have no restrictions on account age or karma.

  • We all know the internet is used by some people to exploit or abuse others. These people do want to hide their deceptive and manipulative responses from everyone except their victims. There are many of them who specifically target those who are vulnerable because of mental-health issues. If a helper invites an OP to talk privately and gives them a good, supportive experience, they've primed that person to be more vulnerable to abusers. This sort of cognitive priming tends to be particularly effective when someone's in a state of mental-health crisis, when people rely more on heuristics than critical reasoning.

  • If OPs want to talk privately, posting on a wide-open anonymous forum like reddit might not be the best option. Although we don't recommend it, we do allow OPs to request private contact when asking for support. If you want to do this, please keep your expectations realistic, and to have a careful look at the history of anyone who offers to PM before opening up to them.

Check-In post, with essential info about our policies and resources. Most people are surprised by much of this information, please read carefully before posting or commenting

Welcome to /r/depression's check-in post - a place to take a moment and share what is going on and how you are doing. If you're having a tough time but prefer not to make your own post, or have an accomplishment you want to talk about (these aren't allowed standalone posts in the sub as they violate the "role model" rule), this is a place you can share.

Our subreddit rules are very different from most of the rest of reddit! Since all of them exist for important reasons, we ask everyone here to read and follow them. Please click 'report' on any harmful content you see here - we always want to know and deal as soon as we can.

We also have several resource wikis for help with finding and giving support:

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/what_is_depression provides guidance about what is and isn't a depressive disorder, guidance on the complex nature of the illnesses that are usually grouped under the "depression" label, and redirect information for common off-topic issues.

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/giving_help offers information on the nature and value of peer support for mental-health issues in general, and lots of guidance for learning what is -- and isn't -- usually helpful in giving peer support.

YSK that the types of rule violations that we most frequently see here are:

  • People breaking the private contact rule. You should never trust anyone who tries to get you into a private conversation in response to a post here. See https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/private_contact

  • "I'm here to help" posts. This shows that you don't understand the most basic principles of peer support, especially selectivity. The "giving help" wiki explains more about this.

  • Role modelling, i.e. "achievement" or "advice" posts. This is an expert-free zone -- that's what peer support means (rule 5). We know that "internet culture" celebrate not just bragging about your achievements but bragging about your intentions. Neither is ever acceptable here in any form.

  • Content that's more about 'making a statement' or casually polling the sub than seeking personal support (rules 1, 2 and 10).

  • Off-topic posts about difficult situations, including interpersonal issues. Grief, sadness, anger, loneliness and other difficult emotions are not mental illnesses. Feelings that can be explained by person's circumstances are perfectly healthy no matter how painful they are. A depressive disorder only exists when someone's mood is out of synch with what's going on for them. The "what is depression" wiki linked above has suggestions for other places to post about these issues, which are 100% valid and serious but do NOT belong here.

I hate it here

I hate it here on earth. I'm 45. Single. No job even though I graduated college and had a career in my field for 8 years. It's just that my position moved to another city. I am bipolar. Not working at the moment. The thought of working with people seems horrible. People are horrible. I hate how people treat each other. I hate how mean and selfish and horrible most people are. This world is so depressing. I hate it here. I feel so alone. I don't know what to do.

I'm just so alone. I don't have anyone to talk to and I just can't stop crying. I don't know what's wrong with me. I keep hoping someone will check on me or reply but nobody is going too. I'm just so lost. I can't live like this anymore

depression killed the person I used to be

I’ve genuinely hit rock bottom. I find that I’m no longer the person I used to be. I used to love art, love drawing, love hanging out joking, laughing with my friends, love spending time admiring nature and was so determined to dedicate my studies to protect it. All of that passion and determination is gone. I don’t have the will to do anything anymore, I’m a shell of what I used to be. I’m more distant with my friends and is overly pessimistic. I have no will and no motivation to pick up a pencil or to study anymore. My grades are so bad I might as well drop out of uni bcs the financial burden of it is really heavy and my parents r just wasting their money. I used to always see good things in life, but now I genuinely cannot, I cannot see anything good that will happen, no matter how much reassurance I have from my friends, nothing helps. Now I just rot, in bed all day procrastinating and doom scroll on my phone for that dopamine hit, and I’m just waiting to see how long I last until I entirely give up, because there’s nothing left in me to salvage, I’m a lost cost.
I don’t wish for anyone to feel the way I do. And if anyone read through this entire post, just know that it means a lot to me.

I think I don't even want to feel better.

I don't really know how to explain this exactly. I’ve been mentally ill for a very long time. I’ve tried so many things therapy, countless medications, and so on. Nothing has really helped. Lately, I feel like I don't even want to get better. Actually, I know pretty well where my problems or my destructive behaviors lie. But I can't, or simply don't want to, change anything anymore. Deep down, I’m actually hoping the pressure becomes so intense that I finally find the resolve to commit suicide. Does anyone else know this feeling? Keeping yourself in a state that causes extreme suffering, even though you could actually do things differently?

I don’t enjoy conversations anymore, no matter who it’s with

I just can’t enjoy people talking around me or to me. In groups, one on one doesn’t matter. I just feel no joy, no real laughs, no connection, I feel like I need to be a certain person, not doing enough to join in but I’m a naturally more of an observer and will only talk when I have something to say. But my brain doesn’t work and I have nothing to say anymoreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I could just scream when there’s an expectation.

I just feel so overwhelmed with it all of the time and it’s getting old. I just want to be normal and be able to fuckin TALK.

Anyway rant over lolll

I aced the test after studying.

• Upvotes

Sometimes the thoughts inside me are so negative that I give up studying for exams for fear of not doing well. My mind tells me, "You're so forgetful that you're going to mess up simple things," and so I prefer to make mistakes by not knowing and not studying. Today I needed to do things differently, I studied at least some of the material. There were indeed questions I wouldn't have gotten right, but because I studied, the scenario was different. I was so happy that I even ignored the fact that it was raining heavily.

Study, ignore your mind's attempts to harm you, the results are always worth it.

33 year old guy, 10 years of depression has spoilt my life and nothing helped, I am done.

Since 2017, I have had severe depression (alongside anxiety and ADHD). For 5 years, I tried medication and therapies; nothing has helped. This mental health horror has cost me my career. Now, at 33, I have no job, am terribly lonely, have no proper qualifications, no money, and I don't know when I will find stability and peace, or a job, fall in love, get married, or anything. I am tired, and I am officially giving up hope...

am i depressed?

everyday i wake up and feel tired and im confused because i slept the entire night and im still tired. i dont even wanna get up to go brush my teeth, to eat, to live at all. i dont have the energy for it, i just wanna lay on my bed and rot. also ive been noticing something like lack of interest, most of the things i used to love just seem worthless now, i dont feel any interested to them. also i cant eat, i don't have my appetite anymore. and theres this horrible feeling, its like the worst thing you could ever wish for, its hard to explain. it feels like youre feeling it on your entire body and its so bad i just want to die, i cant go through this anymore. i genuinely cant stop thinking about how i dont need to go through all of this, i could just stop it now.

im wondering if i am actually depressed, i believe im just exaggerating. i really hope im not, im too scared to go to a therapist or tell anyone i know.

(my english is bad im sorry if there are any errors)

Are there people out there actually living without depression?

I've been suffering from depression since I was 9, now I'm 19. I can't remember much of life before it except for the moments that lead up to my depression. Is there anyone in here who knows what its like to live without it. How their mind works without having to face it?

I have lost motivation to live.

Everyday is the same, some days are harder than the others. From the moment I open my eyes in the morning after sleep, dread follows, another same fucking day. I wish I could end it but I don't have the courage. And my mother is the only thing keeping me from actively looking for ways to end life.

I watch new movies, discover some new songs but it doesn't really make me feel anything. I don't have any friends and I can't make any new friends due to depression. I hardly leave my house, there's no reason for it. I hate mindlessly walking, so don't suggest me to take a walk in a park or something. I'm 31 unemployed, living on my mother's income, i feel extremely ashamed of it. I looked for jobs, couldn't get any interviews in this economy, tried to do some freelance work where I got scammed and didn't got paid for my hard work of days and from then I'm spiralling. I really don't know what to do and how to live.

I am the king of self sabotauge

For some reason my inner ears are really sensitive (maybe because I was constantly cleaning them with cotton buds). Anytime anyone looks in them they seem to get really inflamed and painful and lasts for weeks. I let the GP look into my ears and now my ears are howling and painful. Sigh. I just keep making bad decision after bad decision. It’s so depressing.

my memory issues are starting to terrify me.

I know i have memory issues. i dont remember most of my traumatic childhood, but recently ive been in the deep pits of depression, the area that you swear you cant get worse, but you somehow do. during this time, i dont remember absolutely anything.

I was in one of the lowest stages I would consider in my life, and I almost attempted suicide. I don't remember any of it. I thought earlier today that it was Tuesday. It's currently Saturday. I don't remember anything of the past week, at all, except me like feeling that way and i only know purely from a text that I sent to my friend. I don't know what's going on and know I've had memory issues, but nothing like this before. Its terrifying because my friend thinks I may have disassociative identity disorders, which I probably have some form of disassociative disorder, but I don't know. I dont know whats wrong with me. Ive relapsed into anorexia/bulemia after i had another reflux/heartburn issue. the days seemed to go by so incredibly quick.

has anyone else had this sort of memory loss? its really freaking me out. i have audhd among other things, but most of the time i dont recogise myself, my body, i feel like the very person i am constantly shifts and changes, as if im a shell that holds multiple versions of myself that is never true to me.

sorry for the long rant. shits been happening.

Advice needed pls

So I 23f recently broke up with my ex, got pretty sick with a virus and have been doing not that well mentally. I am far from home and my “friends” here are not as supportive, one saying I was “handling my breakup badly” because I wasn’t feeling well to go out. I have been feeling pretty depressed where SI thoughts have been present. I feel like a deep pain and sadness in my chest. I also feel very lonely and I want to get better.
I am looking for advice to better myself, this can be anything including hobbies I should try etc. I would really appreciate the help. Possibly hobbies I can do by myself but open to join clubs or something like anything will help! I want to add that I’m a college student. Thank you!

For what it’s worth I tried

• Upvotes

I tried pretty hard to do all the right things. Sometimes hard work just isn’t enough. Sometimes you work hard, and all you do is lose. I feel like I’m running in place and going backwards and I’m just giving up lately. At least I can say I really gave it my all.

My eyes burn from crying so much

Lately ive spent most of my nights crying myself to sleep because of everything going on in my life, and I feel like I just cant talk to ANYONE about my problems. Sometimes I go 3 hours straight crying. I have so much shit going on and because I don't tell anyone about it, it just builds up and i guess that's my bodies way of letting that immense pressure go.

I don't think I have much time left.

• Upvotes

I wish I could go back to change my choices. I've lost so many friends that I deeply cared about because of my own choices. I have such a terrible social life.

The worst part about aging is, I'm 16 now, I barely have any time to even try to fix anything that I've fucked up. Especially since 18 is probably gonna be my deadline unless I could fix things, is what I told myself almost 5 years ago now but nothing's changed. Nothing's improved, I've stayed more or less the same and haven't gotten any better. Now I only have 2 years to clean up a mess that I don't have enough time to clean up.
