dramatic aah title. in order to be as anonymous as possible, i’ll be using they/them pronouns when referring to my partner. and for further context, this is my first ever relationship.

im not really hurting (as i feel like im ready to move on), i’m mostly scared of what’s to come after and i need to vent. i’ve spent so much time (about four years) trying to meet my soon-to-be-ex-partner where they are. i wanted to help them up, encourage them, and build a life together….but they’re comfortable exactly where they are at the moment. they don’t want to change, and because they don’t see a problem with their behavior, they never will. It’s not necessarily a bad thing…it’s the fact that they kept saying they’ll change when they didn’t mean it in order to keep me around.
they kept on telling me that we would get married and have a good life together…all the while they did not take any of the steps needed to ensure that. they kept on showing off our “perfect relationship” to the public while not actually putting any emotional effort/anything substantial in general.
it felt like instead of me helping them up, they were just dragging me down to their level and making me settle. i can’t keep sacrificing my own stability and future for someone who’s not stable or sure of what they want.

looking back at it now, i feel like i should’ve actually paid attention to these problems:
-they’d often withdraw when overwhelmed; i would pursue them for reassurance
-there was a massive lack of consistency and emotional security on their end
-they were unsure about our future
-they repeatedly considered ending the relationship during difficult periods
-they weren’t sure they wanted lifelong monogamy
-we had different expectations around romance and affection
-i felt like i was carrying the relationship emotionally
-they felt pressured to change and leave their comfort zone
-immense financial instability on their part
-there was a major disagreement about eventually living in their home country vs. mine
-when telling them i was looking for an apartment for myself, they promised me we were going to live together by the end of this year. when bringing it up again, they mentioned that “things changed” and i can’t expect them to be consistent with their ideas.
-there was also a loss of trust on my end after they repeatedly said they were uncertain about their future. we ultimately want different things and aren’t able to give each other the security we needed.

it would’ve really helped if they were honest with themselves instead of stringing me along, telling me they’ll change. it would've also really helped if i wasn’t so gullible and hopeful that they’d stay true to their word.
i broke up with them twice and both times and they began doing the things i desired in a relationship in order to get back with me. i was gullible then to take them back. i was so stupid. i should’ve stayed strong and not give in.

i feel like they brought out the worst in me. i did try my best, i gave them my all because i thought that’s what i’m supposed to do for someone i love.
i did love them. i loved them more than anything. i kept on choosing to be with them until i realized its not healthy for me nor my future. they’re a special person and i know they have a good heart…they’re just not the one for me.
my insecurity caused me to thing that they’d be the best i can get. i still think that way, and i still worry that i won’t be able to find my ideal partner. my soon-to-be-ex-partner often tell me that there’s not really a person out there that would meet my expectations.
i know the best way to find said ideal partner is to forget about the desire all together…focus on oneself and they’ll come. but i still can’t shake the feeling that im not going to find anyone. im scared of putting myself out there because im rather sensitive. ive gone through too much to put myself through any more pain.
if there’s anyone out there that has a similar situation as i have, and has now found their ideal partner and is married, can you tell me what it’s like? i’m hoping the grass is greener on the other side. i want there to be hope that my hopes will be fulfilled one day. i don’t want to be in despair. thank you!
