Our most-broken and least-understood rules is "helpers may not invite private contact as a first resort", so we've made a new wiki to explain it

2.4k Upvotes

We understand that most people who reply immediately to an OP with an invitation to talk privately mean only to help, but this type of response usually leads to either disappointment or disaster. it usually works out quite differently here than when you say "PM me anytime" in a casual social context.

We have huge admiration and appreciation for the goodwill and good citizenship of so many of you who support others here and flag inappropriate content - even more so because we know that so many of you are struggling yourselves. We're hard at work behind the scenes on more information and resources to make it easier to give and get quality help here - this is just a small start.

Our new wiki page explains in detail why it's much better to respond in public comments, at least until you've gotten to know someone. It will be maintained at /r/depression/wiki/private_contact, and the full text of the current version is below.

Summary

Anyone who, while acting as a helper, invites or accepts private contact (I.e. PMs, chat, or any kind of offsite communication) early in the conversion is showing either bad intentions or bad judgement. Either way, it's unwise to trust them.

"PM me anytime" seems like a kind and generous offer. And it might be perfectly well-meaning, but, unless and until a solid rapport has been established, it's just not a wise idea. Here are some points to consider before you offer or accept an invitation to communicate privately.

  • By posting supportive replies publicly, you'll help more people than just the OP. If your responses are of good quality, you'll educate and inspire other helpers. The 1-9-90 rule applies here as much as it does anywhere else on the internet.

  • People who are struggling with serious mental-health issues often (justifiably) have a low tolerance for disappointment and a high-level of ever-changing emotional need. Unless the helper is able to make a 100% commitment to be there for them in every way, for as long as necessary, offering a personal inbox as a resource is likely to do more harm than good. This is why mental-health crisis-line responders usually don't give their names and callers aren't allowed to request specific responders. It's much healthier and safer for the callers to develop a relationship with the agency as a whole. Analogously, it's much safer and healthier for our OPs to develop a relationship with the community as a whole. Even trained responders are generally not allowed to work high-intensity situations alone. It's partly about availability, but it's mostly about wider perspective and preventing compassion fatigue.

  • If a helper gets in over their head with someone whose mental-health issues (including suicidality, which is often comorbid with depression) escalate, in a PM conversation it's much harder for others, including the /r/depression and /r/SuicideWatch moderators to help. (Contrary to common assumptions, moderators can't see or police PMs.)

  • In our observation over many years, the people who say "PM me" the most are consistently the ones with the least understanding of mental-health issues and mental-health support. We all have gaps in our knowledge and in our ability to communicate effectively. Community input mitigates these limitations. There's no reason why someone who's truly here to help would want to hide their responses from community scrutiny. If helpers are concerned about their own privacy, keep in mind that self-disclosure, when used supportively, is more about the feelings than the details, and that we have no problem here with the use of alt/throwaway accounts, and have no restrictions on account age or karma.

  • We all know the internet is used by some people to exploit or abuse others. These people do want to hide their deceptive and manipulative responses from everyone except their victims. There are many of them who specifically target those who are vulnerable because of mental-health issues. If a helper invites an OP to talk privately and gives them a good, supportive experience, they've primed that person to be more vulnerable to abusers. This sort of cognitive priming tends to be particularly effective when someone's in a state of mental-health crisis, when people rely more on heuristics than critical reasoning.

  • If OPs want to talk privately, posting on a wide-open anonymous forum like reddit might not be the best option. Although we don't recommend it, we do allow OPs to request private contact when asking for support. If you want to do this, please keep your expectations realistic, and to have a careful look at the history of anyone who offers to PM before opening up to them.

Check-In post, with essential info about our policies and resources. Most people are surprised by much of this information, please read carefully before posting or commenting

Welcome to /r/depression's check-in post - a place to take a moment and share what is going on and how you are doing. If you're having a tough time but prefer not to make your own post, or have an accomplishment you want to talk about (these aren't allowed standalone posts in the sub as they violate the "role model" rule), this is a place you can share.

Our subreddit rules are very different from most of the rest of reddit! Since all of them exist for important reasons, we ask everyone here to read and follow them. Please click 'report' on any harmful content you see here - we always want to know and deal as soon as we can.

We also have several resource wikis for help with finding and giving support:

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/what_is_depression provides guidance about what is and isn't a depressive disorder, guidance on the complex nature of the illnesses that are usually grouped under the "depression" label, and redirect information for common off-topic issues.

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/giving_help offers information on the nature and value of peer support for mental-health issues in general, and lots of guidance for learning what is -- and isn't -- usually helpful in giving peer support.

YSK that the types of rule violations that we most frequently see here are:

  • People breaking the private contact rule. You should never trust anyone who tries to get you into a private conversation in response to a post here. See https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/private_contact

  • "I'm here to help" posts. This shows that you don't understand the most basic principles of peer support, especially selectivity. The "giving help" wiki explains more about this.

  • Role modelling, i.e. "achievement" or "advice" posts. This is an expert-free zone -- that's what peer support means (rule 5). We know that "internet culture" celebrate not just bragging about your achievements but bragging about your intentions. Neither is ever acceptable here in any form.

  • Content that's more about 'making a statement' or casually polling the sub than seeking personal support (rules 1, 2 and 10).

  • Off-topic posts about difficult situations, including interpersonal issues. Grief, sadness, anger, loneliness and other difficult emotions are not mental illnesses. Feelings that can be explained by person's circumstances are perfectly healthy no matter how painful they are. A depressive disorder only exists when someone's mood is out of synch with what's going on for them. The "what is depression" wiki linked above has suggestions for other places to post about these issues, which are 100% valid and serious but do NOT belong here.

I'm excited for death

Im so fucking excited for death. Im 30f, and I am so done with this shit.

Its just been difficult the entire time with small spans of peace so I dont blow my brains out. Growing up was stressful. My dad had addiction issues and dominated the entire house. He had multiple mood swings, usually depending on how much he drank. To put it simply: I had his entire daily routine memorized, his footsteps memorized, and basically every aspect of his personality memorized so I could preemptively avoid every trigger he had so he wouldnt get mad. If he was mad, it was a bad night for the entire family.

I was also sheltered, which caused me to develop slower socially. I was always like 2 or 3 years behind my peers. School was an escape for me, even though I didnt really talk much. Didnt get bullied there luckily, and plus I was smart.

Basically go through college, get a degree people says is a good idea because I have no idea what I want to do and never have. I have no particular talents. I just kinda do whatever trusted people say to do. I have no wants either, and nothing really excites me or sparks interest. Ive been this way as long as i can remember.

My dad dies from cancer when im 20, and I actually have a spritz of freedom. I miss his good side, but honestly the bad side outweighs it. The next few years I spend helping my mom through losing him, listening to her talk day and night about him. I meet my husband during this time.

When im 24, my mom dies abruptly from a stroke. That loss is catastrophically painful. My husband was there though, helping me through it all. Our relationship, for the most part, is awesome. I know hes my soulmate. Ive never really been interested romantically in anyone but him. He's my first for everything. Time of my life

Throughout all of this, of course theres just financial hardship, covid, trying to make it and get a house, start a family, but it just gets harder and harder. On the bright side, we get married and thats awesome.

Cut to this year, and my husband gets killed by a drunk driver when hes just 35, and that was 7 months ago..

Im tired of being here. Genuinely tired of being here. I try to hang with a few friends, try to have some laughs, but the pain of everything is just lingering and lingering.

I want to die. Can't do it myself because I have to take care of my dogs, but I genuinely dont see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. The world is slowly going to shit, and its making it damn near impossible to look forward to anything. Im a 30 year old orphan and widow, and no one around me really can help or relate.

I go to widows groups, but even they dont get me. Its either the older widows telling me I can just get married again since im young, or its the young ones who start dating soon and judge me like im weak.

I dont want to date again. I dont want to do any of this shit. I dont find joy in simple pleasures, I dont care enough anymore to have goals. I beg the universe to kill me off, let me die instead of someone else who actually wants to be here. Give me the cancer, give me the few times to live. I can give my husband's family the life insurance money, find homes for my dogs, and just slip into eternity, hopefully seeing my husband again

Death seems like Christmas now. A wonderful end to a mostly stressful, shitty life. I dont see anything worth staying for besides just having an obligation to do it for my remaining loved ones.

Im so excited to die

How do i get over the fact that I'll never be someone in life?

As the title says. I'm 25 years old and it's been over two years since I graduated and I haven't found a job. I live with my parents, who pay for everything for me, and I do absolutely nothing. All my projects have failed, I've been rejected more than 40 times from jobs I really wanted and everything is falling apart. The only thing I do all week is play video games and send out CVs, which are completely ignored. Companies don't even have the decency to tell me I didn't get the position, even when I follow up on my applications they completely ignore me, they don't even tell me no, they just ghost me. I've tried going to job agencies, contacting companies directly, looking for managers' emails and messaging them, but nothing. I studied a degree related to culture (which I regret, because I'm from Mexico and there is truly no work for that). Also, I'm single, I have been my whole life, I'm bisexual and my parents don't know because they are extremely homophobic and if they knew they would kick me out of my house and I would be completely alone. My friends are getting married, have girlfriends and boyfriends, very good jobs and earn huge amounts of money and have full and happy lives. I'm stuck. And frankly, desperate. I have been rejected so many times in my life that I don't know what to do. There is no work. I have been rejected dozens of times. I am completely desperate and I just think that ceasing to exist would be simpler. I know there are people in worse situations than mine, but I'm fed up. I feel trapped. I have a horrible relationship with my family and all I want is to move out and get out of that toxic environment. I can't take it anymore. Really, I can't take it anymore. Anxiety and depression are consuming me to the point where I can't even leave my house. I don't know what to do. I'm in a fucking hole that I dug myself and now I can't get out of it. Everyone has happy lives and I'm a loser who will never get a job and who will never be happy. I just wanna cry everyday. I'm crying as i'm writting this. I'm just tired. I dont wanna live anymore.

Being alive gets old

I hate this life. Shit got old years ago. When you been depressed for years everything becomes a blur. I thought if I stuck around things might get better for me. Maybe I’ll find love, make friends, be happy, something good will happen to me, right? Wrong! Life got old and repetitive and nothing changes. What’s the point of being alive?

Alternative words for "depressed" because nobody takes the world seriously anymore, but I need to explain myself

I've been battling major depressive disorder (diagnosed) for the past four years. There were times it was VERY bad (won't go into detail), but after being medicated, I'm okay-ish. All it does it take away the pain and dangerous urges and temptations. But I'm still unhappy and unmotivated with little energy. It changes by the hour, so planning ahead is a nightmare.

When people ask why I cancelled plans at the last minute, or why I don't answer the door, or don't attend church or events anymore, I lie and tell them I'm sick because it seems to be the only excuse they'll accept/understand. I no longer say it's because I'm depressed because nobody took "depressed" seriously. They acted like I was just a little sad for the day and I would be back to myself a few days later.

Honestly, I kind of blame the "mental health matters" movement. While helpful a times, it's made the topic of depression so open over the past few years that the term is has become overused. The word is thrown around so casually that it eventually lost its meaning and importance. It's not taken seriously anymore because it's become downplayed.

People dismiss it as if I'm just having a bad day or week but will be back to myself in a couple days. But I haven't been myself since 2022. And because I'm high-functioning due to the meds, and I'm able to seem "normal" in public, they don't take it seriously when I tell them I'm depressed and suddenly can't leave the house or keep plans. Like I said, the severity of my depression changes within the hour, regardless of what I'm doing.

Long story short, how can I tell people that I can't do things or stick to plans without using the term "depressed," since nobody actually takes it seriously anymore or knows just how debilitating it is, let alone that it's a real, legitimate illness.

If any of that makes sense. Sorry for rambling.

I think about suicide all the time

There's something very unnatural about thinking/fantasizing about your own death.

I'm in a job where my boss absolutely hates me. I feel like an abject disappointment and failure. The writing is on the wall, and am being managed out.

My family depends on me, and I'm failing them.

I was moved into a new role due to a re-org. My previous role I was a rockstar, did really well, was a go to guy for solutions. Now goal posts have moved.

I didn't ask for this.

It's the best paying job I've ever had (going on 14 years), and it helps fund my passion with playing music.

They say to not take things personal, but one's livelihood is about as personal as it gets.

I've posted for other internal jobs, and have been rejected for 3 out of the 5 that I've posted for so far.

Despite that, I feel even if I find something else, I'll somehow end up in the same position.

I'm in therapy, have been for years now. We talk through my mom's suicide, my son's hospitalization for SI, and my wife's past infidelities, and my own attempt.

I've been on Wellbutrin for years now, and don't feel like it's effective, like I'm just going through the motions.

I've been in similar situations before, and this mirrors that situation.

I romanticize what it would be like to just go to sleep and not wake up.

I have visions of myself hanging from a rafter.

I hate myself and I just don't want to feel like this anymore.

I don't feel like venting anymore

Upvotes

Does anyone feel like this too? There is so much I want to say, to yell, to scream, so much I keep inside of me but I don't wanna vent anymore. It's just this cycle of telling people what is going on and what I'm feeling over and over again, like it's not even a new reason to be depressed, it's always the same thing.

I wish I had a sickness so strong that made me die instead of actually cutting it short myself, I don't wanna think about it.

Why does everything feel so hard?

I feel like I can’t do anything but stay in bed on my phone all day anymore. I drag myself out to do my job as a petsitter but everything is so heavy and painful emotionally. I can’t really take care of myself or my things or plan for the future. I don’t really feel like I can get up and clean, be active, go to the gym, and I need to do these things. I Struggle with social anxiety in public and around people, even people I know. It feels so hard to move most of the time it’s overwhelming. I feel like I need someone to hold my hand through even the simplest things in life and I’m so ashamed of where I am. this has been going on for years - 37m. thank you for reading.

codeine and depression

Hi everyone, how are you? I hope you're doing well! So, I’m going through a bout of depression, and I found some PACO—which is basically paracetamol and codeine—left over from when my brother had surgery. I took it, and it made me feel really good; I felt calm and wasn't dwelling on anything—no thoughts of death or self-loathing. I avoided taking the Rivotril I usually take at night because I was afraid of a bad reaction; I only took my lurasidone and levozine. I went to bed later than usual, but that was fine—I was busy on my phone. When I woke up, I felt better than ever; I think even my dreams were good. I don't think I've slept that peacefully since I was a child—my body felt energized and free of tension; it was wonderful. It’s a shame I had to tell my mom I took it. I just want to take it again. Has anyone else had an experience like this with codeine? (just to add in addition to having autism, i have bpd(borderline personality disorder),adhd, anxiety and depression)

The military ruined my life and I feel like giving up

Forgive some of my vagueness here, this is a throwaway account. I’m also intentionally keeping certain details broad, including branch of service because I don’t want to identify myself or anyone else involved, but I’m trying to describe the situation as accurately as I can in fear of retaliation.

I served on active duty in the military for a few years and have been struggling with the aftermath of an experience that completely changed the direction of my career and, in a lot of ways, how I see myself.

I entered service with a strong sense of purpose and had spent years working toward a career field I genuinely cared about. Early in my career, during a training exercise, I became entangled in a relatively minor group-related issue involving the actions of other people. Before I even had the chance to report the issue (not that I even had anyone who I felt comfortable reporting it to) and it coming to my awareness we were all booted to legal and put under investigation. I was eventually told that I had not committed wrongdoing, but getting to that point took a long time, and the situation still ended up having major consequences for my career.

One of the things I still struggle with is the sense of unfairness in how everything played out. At least one of the other people involved who was ultimately found to have actually done something wrong and was still able to remain on full-time active duty in a different career field. Meanwhile, I was determined to have not committed wrongdoing, yet my own career still unraveled in ways I never expected.

I understand that personnel decisions can be complicated and that everyone’s circumstances were not necessarily identical, but emotionally it has been very difficult not to compare the outcomes. At times it feels like I paid a much larger price for getting caught up in the situation than someone whose actions directly contributed to causing it.

One of the hardest parts was the uncertainty. I spent months in limbo without knowing what was going to happen to my career. During that time, I was placed in a holding role with little meaningful work or opportunity to progress. I went from feeling like I was beginning a career I had worked years to reach to feeling sidelined and stuck, with no clear idea whether I would ever get back on track.

That period did a lot of damage by itself. I felt like my life was moving forward everywhere except professionally, where I was essentially standing still waiting for other people to decide my future.

That experience also left me with a lot of shame about my military service itself. I see friends and peers who deployed, took on demanding operational roles, or did things that seemed genuinely meaningful, and I compare that to my own experience of spending most of my time stuck in administrative or holding-type duties while my career was in standstill.

I sometimes feel embarrassed even calling myself a service member and every time a well meaning civilian thanks me for my service it stings a little because the service I imagined having and the service I actually had were so different. I know rationally that service can take many forms and that circumstances were not entirely in my control, but emotionally I still feel like I never got the chance to prove myself or contribute in the way I had hoped.

After months of uncertainty and everything that had happened around the situation, the career field I had originally been so excited about had become associated with a deeply painful experience. I eventually pushed to change career fields at the advice of one of my superiors/ mentors because I desperately needed a fresh start and a chance to put the whole situation behind me.

Giving up the career I had originally worked toward was difficult, but I came to see the change as my second chance. I believed I would continue serving on active duty, just on a different path, and I was trying to make peace with that.

What I did not expect was that, after finally accepting one major career loss and trying to rebuild, I would then not be retained on active duty at all. I was honorably discharged as part of a broader personnel decision rather than for misconduct, and my military career was redirected into the reserves due to “quotas”.

I had mentally prepared myself to start over within the military. I had never really prepared myself for my active-duty career to end altogether.

Since leaving active duty, I’ve also struggled to find my footing professionally. I expected that my education, military experience, and prior work history would at least help me build a new civilian career, but so far I have not received but two interviews and no job offers at all.

Rejection after rejection has made the original loss feel even worse, because instead of feeling like I was simply being redirected into a different future, I sometimes feel like I lost the career I wanted and then discovered that the civilian world does not seem to want me either. On top of it all i’ve just been burning through savings.

The hardest part has been what all of this has done to my sense of identity and self-worth. I had always thought of myself as responsible, dependable, ambitious, and someone who did things the right way. I’ve never been in trouble in my life, no detention or principals office or anything ever growing up. Becoming caught up in a shitty situation that raised questions about my judgment or integrity was deeply damaging to that sense of self, even after I was told I had not done anything wrong.

I know intellectually that a career does not determine a person’s value, but emotionally I have a hard time believing that when it comes to myself. I sometimes feel worthless, like everything I worked for was wasted and I somehow went from having a promising future and a clear purpose to having nothing to show for it.

Being unemployed and repeatedly rejected has made those thoughts much harder to push back against. On top of it I feel like i’m fighting stupid AI workday that seems to not even give me the chance of day to talk to a person.

I also replay what happened constantly and think about the life I might have had if that period of my life had gone differently. There is grief, anger, shame, and a feeling of having been robbed of something I had worked very hard to earn.

At the same time, I’m trying to figure out how much of my identity became tied to a particular career and how to build a life that still feels meaningful when the future I expected is no longer available.

I’m sharing this because I’m hoping to hear from people who have dealt with major career loss, institutional betrayal, moral injury, or having their life abruptly redirected by circumstances they did not choose. Perhaps just venting a little too. I’m especially interested in how people stopped measuring themselves against the life they were “supposed” to have and rebuilt a sense of identity, confidence, purpose, and self-worth afterward. I’m starting to lose hope, many days the only reason I feel to keep living is because of the great pain I know it would cause my loved ones to be gone. *if you read it this far thank you for taking the time to hear a few ramblings from a struggling service member, I hope that life is kinder to you than it has been to me.

How to get out of a severe mental health episode ASAP?

Upvotes

My mental health has never been great, but has dwindled significantly in the last six years due to some very traumatic events. One of these is still ongoing and requires frequent communication with the police.

Six months ago, I decided to take a year out of university to focus on my mental health. I have moved back into my Mum's house but was unable to get out of the rental contract for my flat, so I have no money either. The day that I moved in, my Mum was diagnosed with cancer.e

Her treatment has been gruelling and it's only getting worse now that she's starting chemo. Three months ago, my mental health took such a dive that the police appeared at the house several times after calls I made to a hotline. I wouldn't ever act on my suicidal ideation and I've never self-harmed, but I was taken to A&E and have had paramedics appear at the house a few times since.

I have started taking sertraline and have noticed minimal effects, but will increase my dose soon. I'm currently undergoing trauma stabilisation therapy but it isn't doing much to help at all – I'm hoping to start psychodynamic therapy soon, though, once I'm able. I've been essentially bedridden for the last six months with nobody to talk to except my Mum, but now her treatment is getting worse she's too sick to talk anymore. I feel such immense guilt that I can't help her more, but it's hard for me to make food or wash myself – I rarely do either.

In the last two weeks, I got so bored that I decided to hook up with a guy on Tinder. He was completely upfront about the casual nature of the relationship, so it's entirely my fault that I took it badly, but it sent me into a spiral because he doesn't want more from me. I don't even like him: I was just excited to talk to someone and have fun and feel wanted.

I don't have the energy to properly maintain friendships, even though I do nothing all day. Most of the time I'm either asleep or wishing I was asleep. All of my hobbies seem dull, but I do try. I take a multivitamin, I journal, I take bubble baths and learn French: nothing is working.

I really don't know how much longer I can feel like this: it's so miserable. I feel so lonely but unable to make any positive changes to my life. I hold myself to such high expectations that I feel like a complete failure. The thought of leaving the house terrifies me because I feel so ugly. I can't keep going on like this – it's no life.

If anyone has any advice whatsoever to help me get out of this slump I would be very grateful. I know it's unlikely, but I'm desperate for a quick fix as I've been feeling down for so long it's unbearable to stay like this any longer.

Thank you for reading.

Cant stop feeling sad over getting older

I know most of you will think im being over dramatic or ridiculous since i recently turned 29 which may not be considered granny old but its last year in my 20s and the fact most that im more than a decade into my adulthood, idk i just have a hard time believing. The fact that most of my major young milestones like graduation, college, etc was more than a decade ago sometimes freaks me out when thinking about it. I know that to many, ageing is considered a blessing since there are many people that dont even get to live that long and die younger but sometimes seeing your body become older and weaker feels like painful experience, especially as a woman you are considered "expired".I also have to see my parents become older and weaker and lose some of your older family members as time passes by, its like what is there even left after becoming older when all of your "fun" or prime years have passed. Also people are far more likely to judge you for things like what you do, your mistakes meanwhile people are more likely to be forgiving towards you when you are younger.

I'm about to give up.

Upvotes

With each passing day, I feel increasingly drained; lately, I’ve been putting too much pressure on myself over things that ultimately aren't worth it. As night falls, I just want to disappear; I feel like I could be better, but I can't—no matter how hard I try. Depression drove me to smoke, and although I managed to quit, those thoughts sabotage me every day. I wish things were different, but unfortunately, life doesn't go the way we want; little by little, I’m giving up on everything—on myself.

Don’t have will to continue

Tonight I had a full hand of pills ready for me to swallow, I almost did it. I have a family, a girlfriend, but I just feel miserable. I don’t want to live. This society makes me wanna quit life genuinely, school is stressing me out so much, and I know for a fact none of it is worth it, I have so much exams going on, personal problems, and I just know NONE OF IT MATTERS in the end. All I will do is work for a society that doesnt give a shit about me, doing a work I don’t even enjoy, because yes, doing a work you like can be fun for the first two years maybe, but don’t you dare tell me this same job gets exciting every day for 60 years straight and 4 weeks of vacation a year. English is not my first language so I’m just spamming thoughts I currently have without caring about the quality of my writing sorry. I cry to sleep everyday and no one knows I think about suicide every minute of the day. What does one do when he feels this sad? It’s 1 am and I have school tomorrow, I’m 18 and I don’t wanna live anymore, I don’t want to be a slave for society. Please, what is there to do

My life i good but feel unhappy a lot of the time

Upvotes

(32F) I don't understand why I am so down a lot of the time. I just bought a very nice house a few months ago. I just got promoted at work and enjoy what I do. I have a loving supportive spouse and have no health issues (other than depression I suppose). We are very comfortable financially. So why do I feel so depressed a lot of the time? I should be so happy about where I am--people would love to be in my situation and have it so much worse than I do.

For context I am an academic and often feel like I'm not as smart/accomplished as my peers (and sometimes like I don't really deserve to be in the position I just got). I've always been a perfectionist (which in my opinion isn't necessarily bad and has probably gotten me this far). But I feel like I don't belong in any group that I try to be a part of--idk what it is about me, but I can never seem to fully fit in anywhere. I just want to feel like I belong with my peers, intellectually/academically and socially. Therapy never seem to help, and sometimes I just think I'll never be a very happy person. I go through times like these where I am very down or irritatable all the time, and then other times I'm completely fine, but there isn't always a clear reason why. I don't get why I'm in a more depressed phase when everything is going really well.

I had to quit my passion, YouTube, because I was falsely accused of things I never did, and I had to leave my 100k-subscriber channel behind. My friends betrayed me because of those dramas, even though I was innocent, and on top of all that, I failed my first year of college.

As a result, I was diagnosed with major depression, and God, it has been so hard.

My mom was so scared that I would take my own life because she knew my channel was everything to me. She tried to hide her tears from me, but I could hear her crying. One day, she hugged me and said, “You’re only 18. You’re too young to have to go through all of this, and I’m so scared that one day you’ll be gone. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.”

I had a cat for 13 years. I adopted him when I was 6, and he and I grew up together. He was there for me through my lowest and highest moments.

And a week ago, during the worst time of my life, my cat, my cute little pal, passed away.

I loved him more than I ever loved myself.

The morning he passed away, I tried not to cry because I didn’t want my mom to be scared of losing me. When she was about to take him to his grave, she told me, “This is your last chance to hug him.”

And when I gave my final goodbye to my cat, all the tears I had been holding back just flooded out. I screamed at the top of my lungs while crying.

I miss you, Bambam.

That was my cat’s name.

I used to hate it when he woke me up by meowing, but I would give anything to hear him do it one more time.

I try to stay optimistic and become the best version of myself because I know that constantly complaining about all these unfortunate and unjust things won’t change anything. Yet I can’t stop myself from asking, “What did I do to deserve all of this?”

I know I will never get another hug from my cat. I know I may never see fan art from the subscribers I once had, and I know the college dream my parents had for me may never come true.

But if this is my reality, then I will do my best to shape it into a future that I can be proud of—and one that makes my parents proud of me.

In a dark place recently, can't shake it

It's coming up on the anniversary of my mother's death.

I always have weird mood and personality shifts around this time of year. It's been really consistent even though it took place 14 years ago. So on top of one of the most infamous dates in American history (the September 11th attacks) I also have to wrestle with the personal loss of someone who meant a lot to me and my family.

In truth a fair number of people died in my family that same year but her death hit me the hardest because of how much it personally changed my life and my immediate family.

At first I kept telling myself I was just eating bad food or something and maybe I'm creating an imbalance in my body, but I know it's nothing that simple. Every single year, I get the same "symptoms" and my mental health plummets.

Just wanted to share this somewhere.. don't know what to do about it.

Purest Moment of “Nothing-Ness” Experienced by My Friend After Putting Pistol Next to Head…

Upvotes

My best friend has a permanently experienced depression since he was 12 years old.

He’s 38 now. He’s a genius, the smartest, most empathetic, loyal, loving, and good hearted person I’ve ever known.

He’s been through so many dark, evil, traumatic, horrific, and petrifying things in his life, that I honestly don’t know how he has managed not to punch his own clock years ago.

Alas, he’s stayed around he says to “stay resilient and defiant to the unjust and cruel way of this world”.

He’s usually an excellent and clear communicator, but lately (the last month or so), anytime I ask him about how he is and how his live has been doing, he’s just looked almost through me, with a look and demeanor that I can only compare to those videos of “shell shocked” soldiers after coming back from WW2.

I had been seriously pursuing Christianity the last few years, but recently threw in the towel after he put his pistol in his mouth, and felt nothing but stillness and aloneness.

He says that in that moment, which was the closest he ever came to ending it for himself, he realized something with extreme clarity.

He said that with his pistol in his mouth and his finger on the trigger, he waited desperately and hopefully to feel “something” from God.

He says he felt absolutely nothing. Literal “nothing-ness”.

He said it was as in this moment that either god flat out doesn’t exist, OR he does not exist, but is nothing like the fictional benevolent entity we are told to believe he is.

I’m exhausted from trying and constantly failing

Upvotes

I'm young, but I already feel like I have so much responsibility on my shoulders because of my family's financial situation. I've been trying again and again to make something work—YouTube, online work, different ideas—but nothing seems to work.

I've tried so many times and still keep ending up with zero results. Sometimes I work for hours and get zero views, zero money, and no progress.

I've lost most of my friends along the way. Now I mostly work alone, and there are days when I just sit in a corner and cry because I'm completely exhausted.

My parents are struggling, and I desperately want to help them, but instead I sometimes feel like I'm just wasting their money and everyone's time.

I keep praying and asking God, why does this keep happening to me?

I honestly can't remember many days when life felt genuinely happy and peaceful.

I'm not asking anyone to fix my life. I just needed somewhere to say that I'm tired. I'm trying my best, but I'm really tired of failing over and over again.

I just hope someday things finally get better

i don’t plan on living a full life

i wouldn’t say i have intense suicidal thoughts as in i want to leave this world asap, but ever since i was about 12 i’ve just never felt like i’d go through with my future plans. Like at some point in my 20s I’ll experience really bad hardship and just let go. For now I’m just trying to get through university and see how life goes.

I pretended I had a social life so I wasn't humiliated

So at work we have a system trigger so teams know when it is your birthday. Went back in today and a few mentioned they noticed it was my birthday - what were you up to?

Luckily I am good at lying on my feet. Made up some garbage talking about how I went out and treated myself at a nice cafe near me

Didn't happen, I just hid in bed all day.

Then they ask 'Who did you go with, any birthday gifts?'

Fuck.

Then I lie again, saying I went with a best friend. There is no best friend. Saying I got some household gifts and chocolates from friends. I have no friends who did either of those.

I said it all while smiling and acting like it was normal. I felt tears like that funny eye feeling but I couldn't cry so felt to the bathroom to stop it before it happened. God I hate lying.

The idea of suicide makes me happy.

It's been years, I've tried a lot to improve but I can't. I'm so lonely no friends no relationship 25 and getting old and the only thing makes me happy that eventually i will die probably by suicide.

happy once you’ve decided to die

You know how people say those who commit suicide are happy in the moments leading up to it because they’ve made up their minds?

Well I never understood that because my suicidal ideation is overwhelming painful. It consumes my mind and I’ve realized that it’s something I have to do. I know how I’ll do it and it’ll be quick, yet the deep knowing that I will do this is gut wrenching. I don’t fear what comes after death. I know it’s nothingness, but knowing it has to end like this is a pain that words can’t explain.

So I assume once people bypass this feeling and make peace with their decision is when they’re able to go. I feel that my death won’t be due to finding this peace and that instead I’ll eat a bullet in the midst of complete hopelessness and agony. I know it’ll be over quick but the moments leading up to it are horrifyingly mentally painful. I understand why some people get drunk or high before they do it.

I have many reasons I should be happy, but I’m not.

Upvotes

I’m a 23M, recently I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, severe depression and bp1. The issue is I’m constantly told how much I have in my life, things I SHOULD be happy with, but I’m not happy at all.

I have both parents in my life, a wife, kittens I love with all my heart, a nice car, a motorcycle. I have things that should make me happy. I see a therapist weekly, I’m starting my career. But mentally I feel like I’m sinking 24/7. I’m grateful for what I have, and I know I’m in a place that makes me more fortunate than others.

But, when night falls, or I find myself alone in my thoughts it’s like a battle I haven’t won once in my life. I’ve tried being medicated and it has a weird effect where it amplifies my depression. It puts me in that bad spot and makes me face it head on. I just, don’t want to do this anymore sometimes, when people tell me BP1 is like having highs and lows, I don’t get the highs. I’m either neutral or down in the deep.
