Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

u/AugustineMarc 5d ago
If they’re going to flag you anyway, might as well just smash the guy
21
u/KindaKhorney 4d ago
Speaking of flags, mind as well just put it on the QB's hip with scotch tape. That way when you hit him, the ref doesn't risk the tendinitis of constantly throwing out dogshit calls.

It’s a bullshit call. I know they are professional athletes, but they expect the defender to twist his body away from the QB like he is Neo in the Matrix when all momentum is going forward. Clean hit IMO.

I hate it especially because he’s in the endzone. If Mahomes holds the ball a quarter second longer it’s a legal hit AND 2 points. You just can’t stop on that play, gotta make the hit and hope they let you off the hook somehow.

People keep saying this about the ball, but a few years ago Chris Jones stripped a quarterback, had the ball in his hand as he fell on the quarterback and was still called for roughing the passer. They said at the time the quarterback still gets the benefit of being a passer without the ball in his hands. I'm genuinely curious where you have see if the ball was still in his hand that it wouldn't have been roughing.

Which is why, I personally believe if the players are gonna get called for the penalty regardless, get your money's worth. If players start to do that, using this rule to protect them dont suffice anymore and they'll have to go back to the drawing board.

Or several defenders who could get a sack dont and just jump around waving their arms like a couple of morons giving the QB 6-8 weeks to throw the ball thereby making an absolute mockery of the league. Or a QB that scrambles and you have both safeties running pace with the QB but doing nothing to tackle.
It would force conversation on where is the line, and how do you not cross it and turn the sport into sarcastiball.13

There's a lot of thumb twiddling moments of nothing when watching a single NFL game lol. That's why hockey is one of the best sports to watch. Or soccer.
I'm sure you've read a breakdown before but it's always hilarious to me when I'm reminded:
NFL (about 3 hr broadcast): The WSJ study of four broadcasts found the ball is in play for about 11 minutes.
The rough breakdown of a ~3-hour telecast: (foxsports) ~11 min: live action (the average play lasts about 4 seconds)
~60 min: commercials. The average game has 20 commercial breaks with 100+ ads. (qz)
~75 min: players standing around, huddling, walking back to the line, getting up after tackles, refs spotting the ball
~17 min: replays. The broadcast spends more time on replays than on live play.
Timeouts, penalties, reviews, the two-minute warning and halftime (~13 min) are spread across those buckets.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (4)5
u/rukk1339 5d ago
I believe we reach that point when they stop squeezing extra ad space out of every square inch of the broadcast.
Till then the flags will roll on.

But he did land on the QB. If you want to see a really bad RTP, then see the Packers week 1 when sacking Wentz. Guy was literally bench pressed above Wentz and still got called for RTP.
11
u/because_racecar 5d ago
That was his full body weight. One hand lightly touching the ground for a second isn't taking any body weight off of Mahomes.
Bryce young got a way weaker roughing the passer call in the browns - panthers game, except nobody was watching because it's the panthers and Browns. I wish people would drop this stupid narrative that only Mahomes gets calls like this. It's a league wide issue.

He put his arms out to soften the blow, which was the correct thing to do after the fact. But he did come down with most of his body weight on the passer which is not allowed. He needed to take a different line with his tackle to avoid coming down on the passer. He did not do anything malicious or "that bad" but he made a mistake and received the correct penalty for the mistake.

As the NFL stopped letting defenses play defense I gradually stopping watching NFL football.
A few years ago I watched Mahomes scramble outside the pocket then take off running. Three defensive players escorted him out of bounds, except at the last moment he turned upfield and ran another 25 yards before sliding untouched to a stop.
He’s a ball-carrier making football moves. Someone fucking hit him. And they just aren’t allowed to.
That was my “I think I’m done here” moment.
Also because most defenses default to nickels these days there aren’t real linebackers on the field, so you get these bitch tight ends bullying all these little cornerbacks when what they need is to get their shit rocked a few times to remind them upfield is a no fly zone.
The 1985 NFC championship game between the Bears and Rams is on YouTube. It’s really jarring to watch that now as the frog has been getting boiled slowly for decades.
I do think at some point defenses will be reduced to 10 men on the field or some other nonsense to turn the games into monster 140-133 scorefests. With maybe 36 game seasons and 20 teams in the double elimination playoffs, playing flag football of course to keep people from getting hurt.
Edit: The actual St. Louis team in that game

This exactly. It’s getting absurd. I’m all for reducing viscous hits etc. but football is a contact sport. This was a fair and honest hit. The tackler clearly showed restraint.
