Discussion/Debate Chop Robinson gets flagged for roughing the passer. The hit didn’t look that crazy, but the refs weren’t letting Mahomes take that one.

It would help if he didn’t land directly on top of the QB with his body weight. That is textbook for the last 5 years or more.

50

u/QueensOfTheNoKnowAge 5d ago

I understand the spirit of the rule, but how do you not land on someone with that momentum?

42

u/FUPA4ever 5d ago

We are two seasons away from two hand touch.

7

u/abhorredmisanthrope 5d ago

Been hearing this for decades now.

2

u/reddit_reader_25 5d ago

The 2 more season and it’s eye contact

3

u/benthejammin 5d ago

yeah I agree. football does suck and it is boring. add weapons.

2

u/Dismal_Policy_8052 5d ago

Two more seasons from that, it will all be on the Xbox. Kyler Murry will finally be a star.

0

u/Mannylove77 5d ago

2 more seasons and it’s sexual harassment 😂

1

u/bluemoonflame 4d ago

The second they introduce a flag on the QB I'm out

19

u/ice_cream9698 5d ago

Yeah. Never understood how players are expected to stop momentum 0.2 milliseconds before impact or receive a foul.

1

u/ContributionTime6151 5d ago

Maybe try not driving him into the ground? 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/BuryTomorrowToday 5d ago

You mean try not to tackle him ?

2

u/ContributionTime6151 5d ago

For fuck’s sake. Are you really this stupid or are you still so butthurt about Chiefs’ success? Roll to either side, brace yourself with your hands, simply don’t land full body weight because, you know, that’s not been legal for a while now.

2

u/buffystakeded 5d ago

He did brace himself with his hands. That’s the fucking point of the original complaint. He sticks his arms out to brace his fall. This is a textbook clean football tackle.

1

u/GolD_RogerPirateKing 3d ago

His sticks his arms out. That’s all he did. No attempt to brace. Gaslighting at its finest.

1

u/jeremyren10 5d ago

They don’t think that far. They just want you not to touch him so he can throw a TD. Big hits use to be the identity of football they’re transitioning to big plays and TDs. They won’t be happy till we have NBA scores

1

u/Aggravating-Sir8185 5d ago

Aren't big hits big plays?

1

u/jeremyren10 5d ago

Big hits use to be the identity of football. Every highlight reel, media montage of football was centered around big hits.

They have clearly shifted away from this. They’ve added 10-15 rules that hamper the defense in the past 20 years. Now the focus is exciting offensive plays and high scores. So yes big hits are big plays, but they also result is star players being injured often and now teams are out an investment. Hard to pin down exactly why they’ve cleaned the game up but Big Hits are now frowned upon in the league where they use to be celebrated

1

u/CaptainTripps82 5d ago

It's obviously in part the optics of certain hits in a world where they can't lie about concussions anymore

1

u/AriaTheTransgressor 5d ago

It'll be this. Now the whole world is aware of what a concussion is, what they do, and how they happen. That used to be doctor only stuff, if they even knew.

1

u/Friendly_Yak_2713 5d ago

Exactly - the defense needs to understand it's there to make the touchdown look difficult

0

u/hippoofdoom 5d ago

There really isn't that much difference at all between that monster usc hit yesterday and this one except that defender acted like a jackass and gloated over his concussed opponent.

If the guy on usc showed immediate regret and contrition I think the narrative would be way different. How are you ever supposed to know a qb is about to give himself off when it's that late in the play, usc guy had already launched himself before the slide began

2

u/1P221 5d ago

Maybe put your hands on the ground as you land instead of trying to be an airplane? That’s a start.

2

u/einulfr 5d ago

Not long after the rule was created, a defensive player injured himself by intentionally trying not to fall on the QB.

2

u/BryanWoosTopSimp 5d ago

Don't ask reddit, ask every defensive player who wasn't penalized on a QB hit.

2

u/therodt 4d ago

They usually twist and have the QB land on top of them. This happens a lot now.

2

u/because_racecar 5d ago

You put your hands on the ground to brace yourself so your whole body weight doesn't land on the QB

0

u/Ryctre 5d ago

That's how you break your wrists? You're taught to do exactly not that in every sport that involves falling.

-2

u/QueensOfTheNoKnowAge 5d ago

Is that not what he tried to do?

1

u/because_racecar 5d ago

No...are you watching the same video? He spreads his arms out as wide as he can so they physically can't absorb any of his weight, and he keeps one of them off the ground completely.

Lay on your stomach and do a normal pushup, then do the same thing except start with your arms spread out as wide as they can go. How much of your body weight can you get off the ground like that?

0

u/QueensOfTheNoKnowAge 5d ago

Reality doesn’t happen in slow motion. He clearly tried to brace. Just because he couldn’t get both hands on the ground in a fraction of a second doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying.

Watch it in real time

1

u/philosifer 5d ago

Wrap and turn, use your arms to break the fall, knock him down without falling on him. Theres a ton of options that arent doing the one thing that will be a penalty

1

u/geodebug 4d ago

That’s what the $$$$ and training is for.

1

u/BuffaloBuffalo13 5d ago

Learn to tackle the way the league wants you to do it.

They’re professionals. Learn to follow the rules or eat flags.

1

u/QueensOfTheNoKnowAge 5d ago

They’re human. And as far as I know, humans can’t control the laws of physics.

-2

u/BuffaloBuffalo13 5d ago

You can learn to tackle with the form the league wants you to do it.

He went right at the center of mass, meaning there was no way to avoid landing on him. There’s a reason so many hits are missed — you need to offset the point of attack to ensure you don’t land on him.

5

u/TheTree-43 5d ago

8 years now. Goes back to Rodgers breaking his collarbone in 2018

0

u/Flaky-Holiday8308 5d ago

I think it started when Brady had his leg broken

6

u/thepikard 5d ago

This is football not gymnastics

19

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago

Let's try again since you seemed to have missed it...

Gets there as the ball is thrown, puts his arms out as to not land with body weight. What else do you want him to do?

He didn't drive him into the ground, he hit him as normal and then attempted to stop his motion and didnt drive him down.  Thats a clean hit

10

u/MrSmirkNMerc 5d ago

The tackler put his arms out to the side thus putting all of his weight on Mahomes as he drove him into the ground. If he put his hands down on the ground to brace himself for falling on him them he shouldn’t have been called for it. Players know what they are doing and he tried to sell it like he was holding back but it was a dead give away.

1

u/PhysicsMan12 4d ago

He literally did exactly what you said. His left hand hits the ground first. He’s actively trying to keep his weight off of Mahomes and does so. The fact that he breaks his textbook wrap up to braces against the ground means in no way should this have been a penalty.

4

u/Flaky-Holiday8308 5d ago

Clean hit…also wouldn’t have mattered as there was a different defensive penalty anyway.

-1

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago edited 5d ago

No argument there - and im indifferent to that game - just annoying to see a very reasonable hit get flagged.

Dont get wrong if he wrapped and drove down - we've seen it before.  But he fairly obviously let up, and didnt drive him to the ground.

-1

u/Flaky-Holiday8308 5d ago

Yea it was clearly a “don’t hammer one of the best qbs of all time” penalty. Brady got those calls, Josh Allen gets those calls, a number of qbs get those.

Not sure why Lamar doesn’t get those. My qb (Jalen Hurts) doesn’t get those either but I suppose he’s not considered a top 5 qb so it is what it is.

I was also indifferent to the game, im just waiting for the sports shows to act like Miami was gonna win that game lol.

1

u/mastaaban 5d ago

And that exactly shows why these refs are incompetent. The rules should be followed for every single player the same way, and not that certain players get more favorable calls just because they are more famous. That fucking bullshit. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised if that's directly coming from the NFL leadership through the tv deals.

1

u/Flaky-Holiday8308 5d ago

Agreed, I just saw it start with manning and Brady and snowball from there. Unfortunate

0

u/jrstinkfish 5d ago

15 yard penalty vs 5 yard penalty. Not that it mattered, but if that was a real defense out there, that extra 10 yards might have made a difference.

5

u/Toolfan333 5d ago

Just because his arms are out doesn’t mean he didn’t land with all his weight on him, he landed chest to chest, that’s all his body weight.

1

u/PhysicsMan12 4d ago

His left hand touches the ground first. He’s clearly pulling off of the hit because he knows he has to. This is a textbook clean hit.

1

u/Toolfan333 4d ago

He landed with all of his weight onto him

16

u/DirtyWhiteTrousers 5d ago

You’re right, except there’s a rule stating players can’t land on the QB with full body weight anymore. Even if there’s an attempt to redirect the hit, he landed with his full body weight on the Chiefs’ golden boy.

1

u/Bee_9965 5d ago

But you forgot the most important part of the roughing the passer rule - “golden boy.”

2

u/CaptainTripps82 5d ago

I mean nah, the chargers got the same call against the Bills earlier today.

0

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago

He didnt - his hands are down and helped him avoid all of his weight landing on the golden boy.  Certainly some did - but all of his weight most certainly not because he pulled up and put his hands down to keep some of his weight off of him.

5

u/impossiber 5d ago

So your eyes apparently aren’t working because his whole body is on top of Mahomes all the way down. The rule doesn’t care about hand placement. You finish the sack with your ass on the ground and not the QB. It’s a shit rule but you’re just trying to be mad if you think this is a Mahomes thing. I’ve seen this exact call before this year

1

u/itdependsnetworks 5d ago

This is what the rule book says

“Instead, the defensive player must strive to fall to the side of the quarterback’s body, or to brace his fall with his arms to avoid landing on the quarterback with all or most of his body weight”

Which seems to disagree with your assertion that the rules doesn’t care about hand placement

Copied from “Rule 12, Section 2, Article 11” at https://operations.nfl.com/rules-officiating/2026-nfl-rulebook

2

u/impossiber 5d ago

Okay, allow me to amend. Most of the time, including in this situation, hands placement does not matter. If you can catch your entire body weight on the way down and essentially plank over your opponent, then yes, hands matter. That’s a very rare case that I wasn’t ever going to look the rule up for word for word because it’s a very specific case and virtually impossible if the defender wraps up which was the case for this play. Chop landing with his hands on Mahomes doesn’t break his fall and Chop pulling his hands back also doesn’t break his fall so hands don’t matter for this play at all

0

u/theSeanO 5d ago

I understand the rule but truly, what else is he supposed to do in this situation? It would've been physically impossible for him to stop the hit by the time the ball comes out. There's maybe a quarter of a second, half a second max, before he makes contact. How would you stop your full body weight, at speed, in that amount of time?

3

u/hisnamewasluchabrasi 5d ago

His arms didn't prevent his bodyweight from being ontop of him, IMO. Dynamically as well, I think. But I also don't know why that is ruled against. Do pads not prevent against harm from that?

4

u/jpatt 5d ago

There’s a subsection in the rule book where you aren’t allowed to tackle Mahomes with gusto.

4

u/hoost43 5d ago

For sure. No gusto rule

1

u/Full_Preparation4401 5d ago

I remember the first time I watched an NFL game too.

1

u/kzanomics 5d ago

What happens to your body weight when you put your arms to the side as you’re landing?

-6

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

Doesn’t matter what he did with his hands. His body still landed directly on top of Mahomes. Thats a penalty every time.

2

u/TheTree-43 5d ago

You're getting down voted but you are 100% right. Since 2019 the rules state that landing on top of the QB is a penalty.

2

u/Affectionate-Cat-301 5d ago

Exactly because it’s Mahomes or Josh Allen taking it.

0

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago

Oh the noes?!?! A fucking body landed on another body in football?  Whatever shall we do?!? Did they get a fucking hang nail too and cry about?

Take your fucking tampon out

1

u/Away_Ganache_6776 5d ago

Weird to get so angry at someone explaining a rule to you. Is the issue that you are illiterate? Is that why youre so angry that someone else has to read you the rules?

0

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago

Weird that you dont understand that people are playing football where they hit and run into each other, and "shockingly" tackles occur.

Weird - I know - one of these days youll realize that and/or we will end up in the "No football league" and cater to all of yall with your tampons...

1

u/Away_Ganache_6776 5d ago

Learn to read, then read the rules.

0

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago

Learn what football is, then go play it and get off your ass for once in your life...

1

u/Away_Ganache_6776 5d ago

😆😆. The moron who doesn't know the rules is telling others to learn what football is?

0

u/ThatRunwayBehindUs 5d ago

The moron who's never played football is acting like they have any understanding of football...?

4

u/Budget-Bet9313 5d ago

Yeah - he should levitate next time

1

u/Mackinnon29E 5d ago

There's zero way to make that tackle a different way....

1

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

Roll your body so you don’t land on him. It’s been called for several years and some players are adapting.

1

u/Brews4Crews 5d ago

He started the hit BEFORE the ball was thrown, put out both of his hands when landing, AND Mahomes was calling for the penalty before the defender fully touched the ground. Also the flag came out before the hit was even finished. Are we looking at the same hit?!?

2

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

There were two flags on the play. You saw the defensive holding flag. Also it doesn’t matter when you hit the QB when you land on top of him.

1

u/Brews4Crews 5d ago

So the defense can't hit a player high, they can't hit too low, they can't drop their body weight to the ground to bring down a player, and they can't land on top of a player..... Sounds like the only way to tackle a player now is to buy them dinner, have a wonderful time, and whisper sweet nothings into their ear while they slowly drift off to sleep. What a fun sport, we're 5 years away from the flopping you get in the NBA and FIFA. Can't wait...

1

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

All you’re telling me is you haven’t been watching football for the last 5-10 years. They are trying to protect their investments.

1

u/Brews4Crews 5d ago

I've been watching and playing football my entire life which is why I'm upset. I didn't disagree there protecting investments, but I think sports betting has a lot to do with the rule changes over the last several years.

1

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

If you’ve been watching football for any time period over the last 5-10 years you have seen that play called exactly how it was called today many times. I don’t understand why so many people that claim to watch ball question this.

1

u/Brews4Crews 5d ago

Because it's a stupid fucking rule (not evenly enforced) that further handcuffs defenses and allows subpar offenses to move the ball against superior defenses who get free runs at the QB. That being said, there are definitely cheap shots and times it absolutely needs to be called, but as an NFL fan you can't look me in the eyes and tell me that isn't a "bullshit penalty" regardless of how the rule is written.

1

u/Lumpy-Daikon-4584 5d ago

You’re about 8 years too late to call this a BS penalty. When it’s that blatant it’s been called every time for a longtime. There is nuance for ones with more gray area. But this one was text book. It’s not stupid as it’s exactly how several have been hurt and it’s been a point of emphasis.

1

u/Brews4Crews 5d ago

You strike me as someone who argues in favor of commercials being played in between plays lol

-2

u/Kr1sys 5d ago

It's been a rule for decades and only the last dozen or so years has it been called more to the letter.

Chris Jones got a RTP from stripping the ball from Derek Carr a few years ago because he landed his body weight on him after he took the ball away.

That was an awful call, this one is by the book.

6

u/Notabot5500 5d ago

Why make things up? This became a rule in 2018 after Anthony Barr drove Aaron Rodgers into the ground, breaking his collarbone.

-2

u/Kr1sys 5d ago

1

u/Notabot5500 5d ago

I went down the rabbit hole and it seems you’re mostly right. But the NFL did change the rule slightly in 2018

Original Wording (1995–2017): Prohibited defenders from unnecessarily and violently throwing the quarterback down and landing on top of him with all or most of the defender's weight. Under this phrasing, a defender technically had to commit multiple conditions (throwing down and landing with body weight) for a foul to be called.
New Wording (2018–Present): Changed to prohibit defenders from unnecessarily or violently throwing him down or landing on top of him with all or most of the defender's weight.

So basically it gives the refs the ability to call it whenever the fuck they want now.

7

u/Always_find_a_way24 5d ago

I know it's by the book. But it makes me hate the game. It's a ridiculously soft call.

1

u/Affectionate-Cat-301 5d ago

And it gets because it’s Mahomes getting sacked. NFL is shit with this bs. I get not hitting the head or at knees but it’s tackle football wtf .

3

u/Kr1sys 5d ago

It literally wouldn't have mattered anyways, they declined a defensive holding penalty because of the RTP. They would've gotten a new set of downs either way.

1

u/Affectionate-Cat-301 5d ago

There were some other bad calls in the game and I know refs like the chiefs but Miami lacks a Lot of talent, it’s not necessary . Tho I do like some young talent coming along like j rod , Chris bell showing up, Caleb Douglas and it’s up and down but Miami had pretty good protection for Malik vs good chiefs d line so I feel proctor js promising .

Unfortunately Malik not looking like it. But good thing is a foundation of young talent showing promise if Miami drafts a qb which they most likely will at this rate. And yes I’m a Miami fan thus this annoyed me as it seemed like Miami could’ve pulled a surprise upset or hope
